Concentricity Gauge This type of indicator was designed specifically for checking rotating diameters and in fact is exactly the type of gauge used in the machining industry for decades to measure run out; the very thing that we as hand loaders are striving to minimize or eliminate. At 21 Century Shooting it is our goal to modernize an industry that has seen little change over the years. Our concentricity gauge is a perfect example. st

If You Can’t Beat ‘Em, Join ‘Em by James Mock

There are many great barrel makers in the USA, but the demand seems to keep all of them with a wait time of several weeks to several months. Therefore, it is my pleasure to introduce you to a new maker of premium barrels. Hawk Hill Custom, 506 Laurel Hill Road, Veronia, Virginia has now thrown its hat into the mix. When I heard about a new maker of cut-rifled barrels, I contacted them about writing a review of their barrels. I received a prompt reply from Shawn Burkholder that he would gladly furnish a barrel. He asked what caliber, twist and contour would I like. I decided to get one to which I could dedicate to score shooting...thus the title of this article. About seven years ago, the late Shelley Davidson showed up at a group benchrest match (100/200yd) with a funny looking rifle dubbed the “Tinker Toy”, which was chambered in .30 BR. My astute observation was that caliber would never work for benchrest shooting. Like those who shot benchrest in the pre-PPC era and stated that the “deuce” was king, I told Shelley that the 6mm PPC was king. Since that time, a new kingdom has arisen. That kingdom is score shooting and the monarch is the .30 BR. There are other .30 caliber entrants such as the .30 Grendal/.30 PPC, but the .30 BR rules over most 100/200 yard score matches. Shelley did not “invent” this cartridge, but he was one of the first to shoot it in our neck of the woods. Ronnie Long, Randy Robinette, Al Nyhus and others were pioneers in the use of this amazing cartridge. I wish Shelley were here to see what has happened with his “new” chambering. Not only have the .30’s dominated score shooting, but they are making inroads into the world of group shooting. Mac McMillan’s 0.009” 100 yard record group shot with a .222 was recently broken by Mike Stinnett with a .30 PPC. WOW! After trying my hand at shooting for score last year with a 6PPC, I decided

to try a .30 BR. My problem is that I have none of the needed .30 caliber stuff. I ordered a .30 caliber/18 twist/HV contour and told Shawn that I planned to cut it to 24”. Col. Billy Stevens will chamber it with a “Robinette” reamer that is so popular today. This reamer features a .330” neck and zero freebore. My old BAT has a .308 boltface, so I will have the barrel put on it. Now that I have the barrel ordered, I will have to get some dies, bullets, turning mandrills, etc. Even if one has a barrel given to him, it is quite expensive to start with a new chambering. For the FL sizing die, I gave John Whidden a call and got one of his superb dies on the way. I already had a competition seating die from RCBS. It is for the 6mm BR, so all that was necessary was to call RCBS and get a bullet “sleeve” for .30 caliber. A call to K&M got an expander and pilot for turning the necks of the brass. (Since then I have added a Wilson seating die since I prefer those to one that is screwed into the press.) Now I am all set to load for the .30 BR. Wait! I have no .30 caliber bullets and obtaining them can be a problem. My friend, Joe Krupa, recommended 10X Bullets made by Dick Baier and Chad Schmidt of Wisconsin. I called Dick and found that he was behind with his bullet orders. He said that he could get some to me by the end of February. That was okay since I won’t have the barrel until then. With the 18 twist barrel, I followed Dick’s advice and ordered 115 gr. bullets made on 0.925 jackets from J-4. Well, the time has come and the wait is finally over! After a quick inventory of suitable powders on hand, I have H4198 Extreme, H4198, N130, IMR 4198, AA 2015 (older lot), and LT-32. Today is March 10 and I have received both the barrel and the bullets. Initially, I turned 49 cases and loaded them with 33.0 grains of H4198 Extreme, H4198 (pre-extreme), IMR 4198, AA 2015 and N130. I wanted to see how

each performed and what they chronographed. This was the first firing of the brass and I loaded these with mild loads. Although I didn’t expect match accuracy from these fire-forming loads, maybe I could use this session to decide which powder to use. I had about 60 Berger 125 grain bullets and decided to use these for this first test. These bullets measured about 1.040 inches long an I believe that the 18 twist barrel will handle them okay. We will see. How fast are they going? To get an idea of which powder I want to use, I loaded the 125 Bergers with 33.0 grains of four different powders. The average velocities of these loads are as follows: H4198 Extreme- 2863 fps; H4198- 2874 fps N130- 2787 fps IMR 4198- 2953 fps 2015-2723 fps LT32-2718 fps All of these were the average for three shots taken with an Oehler 35 at 15 feet. From these results, I plan to use more H4198 Extreme and N130. The older H4198 and the IMR 4198 require a compressed load when one loads in the upper windows. Range session #1: Since I am new to using this cartridge, I will tested it in a manner similar to what I do for the 6PPC. I loaded the 115gr. 10X bullets from Dick Baier at jam, .005 off jam, and .010” off jam. For each depth, I loaded 33.5, 34.0 and 34.5 grains. If the rifle doesn’t perform as expected, I will repeat the test with H 4198 Extreme. For this session, I drove about six miles to my friend Kent Bennett’s range. I have a 100 yard range at my house, but I am more comfortable shooting at Kent’s. I have burned a lot of powder at that range. (See Photo #1 next page). After a round or two, I realized that shooting the .30 BR is different from shooting a 6mm PPC. After shooting free recoil with a 6mm PPC since 1997, I realized that changes should be made to shoot this animal. After

August, 2014 Precision Rifleman

a couple rounds to determine a zero, I began shooting 3-shot groups with 33.5, 34.0 gr and 34.5 grains of N130. I shot each charge at jam, .005” off jam and .010 off jam. Although it was a little uncomfortable, I shot with the rifle pinned to the stop. This method may have hurt my accuracy a little but I believe that one must find a method to better handle the recoil. (Photo #2 below shows the results of today’s shooting.)

Photo #3 (top right) records the results of this session. There is a tendency to look at a target like the one above and reach erroneous conclusions. This session was used to determine the best load for competition. Although I am in Louisiana and shot this target the morning after St. Patrick’s Day (March 18th), it was very cold and windy. I was not shooting it like I would during a match, in that I did not hold to keep a group together, but shot when the flags were similar to the time of the first shot. Also, this was the second firing of the brass and the high shot on the .376 target may have been caused by an extremely tight fit when chambering that round.

Session #2 with H4198 Extreme: After the initial session with N130, I tried the most widely used powder in the .30 BR...Hodgdon’s H4198 Extreme. Since I only have Dick Baier’s fine 115 grain 10X bullets, I will again be using those. I loaded 34.0, and 34.5 grains with three seating depths; (Hard Jam, and .005 off). I also loaded nine rounds with 34.5 of N130 with three seating depths; Jam, .005 off, and .008 off.

Overall, I was pleased with the consistency of the accuracy. The .076 group shot with 34.0 grains of H4198 Extreme and the .187 group with 34.5 grains of N130 deserve further testing. I am getting a little more comfortable holding onto the rifle. My impression with this Hawk Hill barrel is very favorable. It cleans very easily and does not copper foul. Before I pass judgment on a target barrel, I would love to shoot it in a match. Since there are

5

no score matches nearby, I will shoot a practice target under simulated match conditions. (Photo #4 below). For this test target I used the two loads that were more consistent in previous sessions; the 34.0 grains of H4198 with the 115 grains 10X bullet seated at .005” off jam and 34.5 grains of N130 with the same bullet seated at .010 off jam. I was very pleased with the results of this session. I shot two different loads that exhibited almost the exact same point of impact and I shot very few sighters. I did not clean the rifle during this test. Although this is not an official score target, it features the same size bullseye and “X”. I shot approximately 15 X’s out of 18 shots for record. For this test I used a BAT model B with a 36X Valdada benchrest scope. The stock is a Terry Leonard model and the rest is an older Sinclair. For measuring velocities, a Oehler Model 35 was used. If you are in need of a premium grade barrel and want it with a short wait time, contact Shawn Burkholder at Hawk Hill Custom, www.hawkhillcustom.com.

Mike Conry Wins CTBRSA’s 2014 Bluebonnet by Wayne Young

MAY 3-4, 2014

Dietz Range, New Braunfels, Texas The 21st annual Central Texas Bench Rest Association Bluebonnet Sporter and Light Varmint matches were held in gusty, switchy winds of up to 20 MPH for the entire two days of the match. This proved challenging for some shooters and seemingly routine for others. Other than the wind, weather conditions were excellent. The match ran smoothly and all 39 shooters seemed to have an enjoyable time, possibly with the exception of master trigger builder Arnold Jewell who, when moving from bench 5 to bench 12 between the 100 and 200 yard LV match made a slight mistake - actually two mistakes. Having raised his sights to the 200 yard setting before moving, he raised them again after moving. Then, when the commence fire command was given for the first 200 yard match, he began firing on target 5 (his former position) from bench 12. The good news is that due to his raising his sight twice he missed the target completely thereby not dirtying it up for the shooter on bench 5. The bad news is that he had to take the penalty! Jacob Gottfredson distinguished

himself by winning the LV100 yard match with a very respectable .2296 and ended up 4th in the LV Grand with a .3539. In the windy conditions, Mike Conry produced a .111 small group in the LV100 and a .272 in the Sporter 200. Other small groups were shot by Charles Huckeba in the Sporter 100, a .236 and Darryl Whitman shot a .366 in LV200. It was a constant tight battle between the duo Mike Conry and Charles Huckeba from Midland/Odessa, on the west side of Texas and Gene Bukys from Houston, on the east side of the state. Final results showed Mike first, Charles second and Gene fifth in the Sporter Grand. Mike first, Gene second and Charles third in the LV Grand, and Mike first, Charles second and Gene third in the Two Gun. Gary Grove, a CTBRSA club member, placed third in the Sporter Grand. Other CTBRSA club members showing respectable scores were: BG Lott, fourth in the Two Gun Grand with .3729 and fourth in Sporter Grand with .3714. Tommy Long, fourth in LV200 with .3895 and fifth in LV Grand with .3541. Gary Bristow, third in Sporter 200 with an .3876 agg.

Manfred Freytag, second in Sporter 100 with .2540. Kris Whitman, fourth in Sporter 100 with .2680 and Arnold Jewell, sixth in Sporter 100 with a .2850. The Boy Scout troop from New Braunfels, TX did an outstanding job as the target crew and provided a quality BBQ lunch which the shooters all enjoyed both Saturday and Sunday. A big THANK YOU to them! Bill Pond Wins Two-Gun at Prairie Dog by Mel Klasi May 31-June 1, 2014 Northwest Regional UNL & SP

We had a cool weekend for our first match of the year. Temperatures were in the 60s and 70s. On Saturday we shot 10 shot unlimited, the first leg of the 4 gun. Bill Pond won the 100 yard agg shooting his Hall B bag gun and Bud Schalles was second shooting his newly made Woody rail gun. At 200 yards Bud Schalles was the winner with Rodney Brown second. The grand agg winner in the 10 shot Unlimited was Bill Pond whose 0.3048 edged out Bud Schalles’ 0.3066. Small groups were a 0.161 by Bill Pond at 100 yards and a 0.301 at 200 yards by Rodney Brown. On Sunday we started the Sporter match at 200 yards in the 2nd leg of the 4 gun. Fog rolled in for target 4 making things more than interesting. Tom Evans won the 200 yard Sporter by a big margin with Tom Stiner second. At 100 yards Terry Hettich was the winner with Tom Stiner second. The grand agg winner in the Sporter was Tom Stiner at 0.2882 with Tom Evans second at 0.2966. Small groups were a 0.101 at 100 yards by Terry Hettich and a 0.365 at 200 yards by Bud Schalles. The two-gun winner for the weekend was Bill Pond whose 0.3342 edged out Bud Schalles’ 0.3347. Tim Stamm did the scoring and Dave Tunbridge ran the computer. Next report will show the results of the LV/HV 100-200-300 yard match, which is the 3rd leg of the 4 gun. Kentucky Colonels Rule at River Bend By Jim Andress, River Bend Match Director

April 12-13, 2014 Twenty-nine shooters shot Saturday’s portion of River Bend’s second annual Gene Mowell Memorial Tournament and twenty-six shot Sunday’s portion. The weather was perfect; mild temperatures, sunny and not too much wind. Lots of blooming azaleas, dogwoods and wisteria were beautiful--it was a joy to be outdoors. As was the case at this event last year, this was the Bart and Billy show (see the results following for more detail); however, they did tease the rest of us--letting some think they had a chance. Buddy Ross won the LV100 on Saturday morning; however, going into the fifth match of the event the top three shooters were separated by a mere .0023, with Bill Greene leading with a .1875, Buddy with a .1893 and Terry Leonard with

a .1898. Buddy’s .151 in the fifth match put him on top. Although Billy won the HV100 on Saturday afternoon, again the top three shooters were close going into the fifth match of the event, with a mere .004 separating the top three shooters. At that time, Joe Bougard was at .2100, Billy at .2108 and Bart at .2140. Billy’s .173 in the fifth match put him on top. The HV200 and the HV Grand were als close going into the fifth match of the HV 200 event on Sunday morning, with Bart leading Billy by .2174 to .2231 in the HV 200, and Billy leading Bart by .2132 to .2189 in the HV Grand; however, Billy’s .688 on the fifth target opened the door for Bart to win both of those events. In the LV200 and the LV Grand, when the shooters were called

to the line for the fifth match of the LV200 on Sunday afternoon there was a bit more “space” between the top two shooters (Bart & Billy, of course). At that time, Bart was at .2270 and Billy was at .2347 in the LV200 and Bart was at .2128 and Billy was at .2301 in the LV Grand. Not even the wellknown gunsmith who was shooting new jackets could catch the wellknown bullet maker who was also shooting new jackets. Although the “top guns” shot well, the performances of some of the “newbies” are noteworthy also. Second-year shooter, Bill Greene finished in third place in the LV100 with a .2096 agg (and three groups in the ones); Bill Griffith, shooting a “real” gun in a match for only the second time, shot small group in LV100 with a screamer of .095. Tim Singleton, shooting in his

first registered match, shot small group in HV100 with a screamer .098, Dickie Land, shooting his second registered match, barely missed shooting small group in HV200 with a screamer of .222 (Glen Nelson’s .209 took that honor). Hal Barnes, in only his third day of registered match competition, finished in seventh place in HV100 with a .2746 agg. Steve Sanford, shooting his third registered match, shot a .191 on one target in HV100. Don Greene, shooting in his first registered match, finished in the top 10 in LV200 and Bruce Schwartz, shooting his first ever benchrest match (and with a factory rifle), shot a very respectful .7106 agg in HV100. Although Brady Knight is not a newbie, it was good to see him shooting again--his .219 on one target in HV100 is a reminder that his world record-holder skills are still alive and well. The River Bend Club and all the people there were excellent hosts. Thanks to them for making this match available. Thanks to River Bend members Bill Dittman (Range Officer), Scott Dittman (Scorer) and the target crew as well as outof-towner Randy Sanderson (target crew) for giving their weekend to helping make the match run smoothly. Special thanks to Charlie and Cheryl Hood for providing an excellent barbeque lunch on Saturday and to River Bend Gun Club for the spaghetti dinner Saturday evening. River Bend will be hosting another registered match the second weekend in October; you should plan to attend--the weather and the fellowship will be awesome! The weather report was calling for 10 to 15 mph winds in the morning and 15 to 20 mile winds in the afternoon so we tried shooting 200 yards first but found out it didn’t make much difference. Most of us still fell apart at one time or another. The weather was warm, the cookies were good, the donuts were fresh but the scores were less than everyone had hoped for. Good ole Paul gave us a lesson in figuring out the conditions (or he was just plain lucky) dropping only 1 point at 100 and 7 points at 200 to take the win. Good job Paul.

a 249-14x for first place. Tom Halecki dropped 2 for a 248-14x and thanks to everyone that didn’t show up I snuck in 3rd with a 243-3x. Frank Taggart was having case problems to start with and by the time he got it corrected it was too late and ended up with 231-3x. The 200 yard contention was ugly. Glenn Sampson worked his butt off to come up with a 239-1x for first, Tom Halecki worked just as hard but didn’t fair as well with a 228-1x and then along came me with a 227-3x. It looked like Frank was going to give Glenn a run for his money and had Tom and I whooped until something went wrong with the ole shooter and he didn’t get a shot at the last 4 bull’s. The aggregate ended up with Glenn Sampson at 1st with a 488-15x, Tom Halecki with 476-15x and I ended up with 3rd with 470-6x.

Participation was low for our May shoot with only 4 shooters showing up for hunter class. Even though high winds were in the forecast, we had a good turnout for the 100/200 Nevada State Championship at Desert Sportsman’s. You will notice a very interesting equipment list for the winners at 200 Yards. These local guys are trying to outsmart the high winds we see this time of the year and today it worked in their favor. We had a celebrity from Arizona shooting with us and I even got his autograph! Despite all the hoopla he remained a good sport and did not let stardom and autographs inflate his ego. Now lets get to the match results. 100 YARDS Ron Carter...................... 249-16X Tom Debacco................... 249-12X Keith Myers..................... 248-12X Pete Savage...................... 248-9X David Smith...................... 248-8X Sheldon Turf.................... 247-10X John Crissman.................. 246-10X Howard Bloom.................. 242-15X Tony Debacco.................... 242-6X Randy Burgess................... 241-8X Bob Brud.......................... 235-3X 200 Yards David Smith.....................238-1X Tom Debacco.................... 235-3X Ron Carter........................ 235-0X

Chippewa’s Super-Shoot Warm-Up By Bob Denk, Chippewa Rifle Club Match Director

May 17-18, 2014

Conditions for the weekend were mixed. The club itself almost cancelled the whole match due to the large amount of rain. If any of you has ever been to Chippewa, you realize the club’s back boundary is Chippewa Creek. On Thursday before the match was scheduled, it almost topped its banks which means that the water was up over eight feet above its normal course. Friday was warm and sunny and the match went on as planned. Saturday brought a typical Ohio spring day. On and off rain with cold temperatures. Staying warm was as important as good groups. As always a few found a way to perform. Sunday brought severe switchy winds which brought everyone some problems. I would like to thank all the shooters and the volunteers that put on the match. I hope everyone enjoyed themselves. This year it was definitely a warm-up for the Super Shoot. That’s not to say everyone else rolled over and died, as can be seen in the results. Saturday ended with George Carter in top place in the LV100 and Dominic Grunas in first in the HV100. Sunday dawned and nice conditions were waiting for everyone until Pat Metcalf announced, “commence fire” and the wind started to play games with the competitors. Sunday’s HV200 went to Walt Berger andJan Hammes to the LV200. When all was summed up, George Carter won the LV Grand with a .2496 and Dominic Grunas took first in the HV Grand with a .2661. Small groups were Gene Bukys, LV100 with .119, Wade Hull, HV100 with .090, Dave Holmes, LV200 with .237 and Joe Krupa, HV200 with .306. Ald of course, this brings us to the Two Gun results with Gene Bukys claiming the win with .2742 and Walt Berger closing in for second with .2804. Dominic Grunas won third, Dave Holmes fourth and rounding out the top five was George Carter. Funny, all of the above shooters have been in these positions at Chippewa in the past. This year we had 32 shoot-

ers turn out both days for the match. We had many different countries represented by shooters form South Africa, Canada, Australia, Austria and the USA. No rain fell during the match, which was strange. We at the Chippewa Rifle Club thank all the shooters for supporting our match and enjoyed having you all competing at our range. We cordially invite you all back next year. Hope to see you then. Mark Walker Wins Manley Oakley Trophy by Dan Kjelland

May 3-4, 2014

Congratulations go out to Mark Walker, winner of the 2014 Manley Oakley Trophy. The two gun in Sporter and Heavy Varmint class was held at the Tacoma Rifle & Revolver Club. Mark captured the title this year with a .2664 aggregate, while second place went to Larry Boers (.2700) and third to Steve Kostanich (.2810). Conditions were tricky on both days; wind gusts toppled more than one shooters’ flags during match. Wind conditions were always changing quickly, never holding steady for more than a few seconds. The sky was overcast with occasional rain and temperatures were in the low 50’s. Shooters who spent Saturday night on site in their RVs were treated to several downpours which, even by Pacific Northwest standards were spectacular. On Saturday morning Mark Walker stepped up to claim the Sporter 100 with a .2282 agg. By afternoon Rick Graham had secured the Sporter 200 yard with a .2268 agg. But it was Mark Walker who held on to take the Sporter Grand with a .2390. Small groups were shot by Denny Andrews in the 100 yard (.177) and Jeff Lewis in the 200 yard (.264). On Sunday, Denny Andrews demonstrated his skill by taking the HV200 with an impressive .2053 agg, however, it was Mark Walker again who led the way by taking the HV100 with a stunning teen agg of .1852. The HV Grand finished with Larry Boers at the top of the list with a .2339 agg. Small groups were shot by Mark Walker in the 100 yard (.150) and Dan Kjelland in the 200 yard (.299). Finally, a moment of silence was observed for Chris Ross, who passed away on Friday, May 2. He had been active in the bench rest community for years and was a friend to everyone he met. Thanks to our great crew for their weekend contributions: Jon Wyant, Target Crew, Ken Crouse, Statistician, Jim Silverton, Range Officer and Craig Kensler, Official Measurer. Next match we’ll be breaking out the rail guns for

Bob Scarbrough, Jr Wins Holton President’s Cup by Lee Hachigian

April 26-27, 2014

Bob Scarbrough Jr used his home field advantage to win the 2-Gun in cold windy conditions. How bad was it? Eight shooters didn’t finish. (They may have been wiser than the rest of us). Rumor has it that they got knocked down by the 30mph gust and after they stopped rolling they couldn’t find their way back! A total of 35 shooters came to southwest Michigan hoping for warm spring weather to begin

their shooting season. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had a different idea in this crazy weather year. We started on the 26th with the HV100. The morning weather was cold and the winds were starting to move quickly from east to west (unusual for Holton, where the winds are typically from the west). There were no screamer groups fired this morning. When the smoke cleared there were no teen aggs. Hanging on to win the LV100 was Vic Halverson with a wellearned .2210 agg. Bob Scarbrough Jr. finished second with a .2286 and Larry Feusse finished third with a .2468. Holding the Small Group honors was Vic Halverson with a fine .130. As we started the afternoon HV100, conditions became even more difficult with winds gusting to 20 mph; however this time Bill Mitchell took charge and fired a winning agg of .2126. Only a few thousands behind was Dewayne Wood who shot a fine .2258 agg. In third place was Joe Hynes with a .2380. The small group was shot by Larry Feusse with a very nice .099. On Sunday the HV200 would deter-

mine the agg winners as the textbooks say it usually does. Again the weather gods were flexing their muscles on us with those hard cold winds out of the east. The HV200 was a challenge. The always-present Bob Scarbrough Jr finished third with a .2965 just slightly behind Joe Hynes in second with a .2921 agg. The winner shot well posting a fine .2856 next to the name of Ted Heindselman. Joe Hynes had small group of .334. After the challenging morning match, eight shooters called it quits. In the afternoon LV200 conditions proved to be even more challenging. In third was Larry Feusse at .3695 with Rob MacClennan sneaking ahead of him for the second place finish at .3685. Winning the range agg once again with his superior wind reading ability was Bob Scarbrough Jr with a .2600. Exceptional also was the small screamer group turned in by Larry Feusse of .225. When it was time for the Grand and Two Gun awards, we were pleased to see that many competitors remained to cheer for the winners and warm up

Above L-R: Larry Feusse, Ted Heindselman, Bob Scarbrough Jr & Joe Hynes Below L-R:Larry Feusse, Vic Bob Scarbrough Jr, Vic Halverson & Rob MacLennan in Holton’s fine club house. The winner of the Heavy Varmint Grand was Joe Hynes with a fine .2650. Light Varmint Grand was taken by Bob Scarbrough Jr with a .2443 agg. When it came to hand out President’s Cup 2-Gun winner, stepping up to accept the honors was none other than Bob Scarbrough Jr. His 2-Gun agg of .2695 was well deserved with the conditions being so tough. Finishing behind Bob was Larry Feusse with a .3119 agg. Finishing in the third position was Joe Hynes with a .3291. Certainly we extend congratulations to the winners and those that placed high. Battle of the Big Guns at Seymour, Texas by Glenn Chism

The Texas State UNL10 & HV A big gun is a rail gun. Somewhere in Texas may be the birthplace of the rail gun. I say that because Seymour, a tiny spot on the Texas map, was bustling with activities. The nearest Wal-mart and big chain motels are 50 miles away and the only recommended privately run lodging facilities parking lot was jam packed with vehicles. The motel owner and staff were politely welcoming this bunch of strangers. “What are you in town for” was the question and answers were both conflicting and fabricated. Rooms are booked six months before the scheduled match. Everybody in town knows why we were there. There were sneaky smiles on the faces of the competitors when it was announced that Mike Conry, the winner of this match for the last four years, would not be attending due to prior commitments. Friday evening we all accepted an invitation by match co-hosts, Trae and Kammi Reed to dine at Blessings Restaurant. A classy downtown Seymour restaurant that serves up some delectable Latin-American cuisine. We all felt “blessed” when we left

this place. A great dining idea on the day before the big shooting match. It was a little chilly Saturday morning at the start of the UL100 10-shot Texas state match. Wind was light and consistent. As the day progressed, so did the West Texas wind. By midday, things got a little interesting. There were gusts and quick directional changes, sometimes referred to as “switches.” The wind conditions brought on foul language from some “gentlemen of the sport” that you would never expect to hear. By afternoon during the UNL-200 phase, there were grown men staring at their targets at the wailing wall, trying to explain to anybody that would listen how they managed to shoot some of the biggest groups of their career. At the end of the day Charles “Huck” Huckeba had navigated his way through some tough conditions to win the Unlimited Grand. John Horn was second, Dickie Pustejovsky third, Scott Hunter fourth and Larry Baggett fifth. Saturday night we all went to the Ranger Creek Hunting Lodge. The Atmosphere is “Old West Texas” and we all greased our palettes with steaks made to order with all the trimmings.

Damaged egos are quickly fixed at this establishment, with the great Texas hospitality and laid-back atmosphere. Some competitors attend this match just to dine at this restaurant. We got more cool weather and wind Sunday morning for the HV100. Huck did it again with a fine .2022 agg. Trae Reed was second, Dickie Pustejovsky third, Kelly Morman fourth, Larry Baggett fifth. Ten mph wind with gusts to 20 made for an interesting HV200 match. Most competitors got bit by unseen wind switches. Dickie Pustejovsky posted a .2682 in some tough conditions. Huck was second followed by Larry Baggett, Gary Bristow and John Horn. The HV Grand was won by Dickie Pustejovsky with Charles Huckeba in second. Larry Baggett placed third followed by Gary Bristow and John Horn. Thanks and appreciation goes to match organizers John Horn and Scott Hunter and to Trae and Kammi Reed for helping keep a benchrest shooting tradition alive. A big welcome to first time shooter, Eric Latham. Eric has previously served as match director at this shoot. He will be a repeat attendee at this match. I can see it in his eyes. Big Mike Cordes drove down from North Oklahoma and Mike brought Hayden Miller with him. This was Hayden’s first trip to Seymour. Bringing friends to matches is one way to introduce new people to our great sport. We all had a wonderful time and look forward to the next match. Don’t forget to make your motel reservations early! Gulf Coast Regional Leg #2 Seymour, TX UNL10 & HV June 14-15, 2014 HUCKEBA WINS 2- GUN GARY WALTERS WINS 3 & 4-GUN

This shoot is without a doubt, one of the most popular registered competitions in the Gulf Coast Region. We came back to Charles Huckeba Seymour to test our skills against some persistently challenging conditions. Many of us were still licking our wounds from the previous match held in May. As expected, not much had changed. This is west Texas. A grim reminder of what to expect is evident while driving to Seymour. There are large wind farms with huge wind turbines used to generate electricity. These turbines are strategically located on thousands of acres of West Texas flatland. If you are a Benchrest shooter, your attention is drawn to these turbines with three 40ft blades. You distinctly notice the their constant rotation. Perhaps you ask yourself sometimes, “why am I doing this?” We were greeted with gusting winds that didn’t let up all weekend. Our match director was Dr Tim Oltersdorf. Dr Tim has been on loan from the Out-

GCR Champion, Gary Walters

August, 2014 Precision Rifleman patient Dept at Old Parkland Hospital for the last two Gulf Coast Region matches. In recognition for sustained superior performance, The Good Doctor received a surprise award of “Match Director of the Year”, presented by Regional Director Scott Hunter. A special thanks to match hosts John Horn and Scott Hunter for making this possible. The energy and effort that goes into organizing these matches does not and should not go unnoticed. Your continued support is appreciated. Charles “Huck” Huckeba won the Two Gun. A hard-earned victory to say the least. When combined with NTSA’s LV & Sporter results, the 2014 Gulf Coast Region Three-Gun & Four-Gun winner is Gary Walters. Congratulations to Charles & Gary on a fight well fought. Thomas & Schalles Score Big At NorCO By LuAnn Dill

Welcome everyone to another great year of benchrest shooting with Northern Colorado Benchrest Shooters and yours truly, Wile E Coyote reporting. We were close to a full house with 15 shooters in attendance. Some came for the thrill of Hunter class and others for Varmint for Score. With a few campers around the loading barn it’s an awesome site. The smell of gun cleaner was in the air. The equipment was all checked and ready to go. The tall tales of past shooting events could be heard as the countdown to 9:00am began. The weather was gorgeous, but typical Colorado. Some cool, some hot, a bit of rain to mix it up and of course the twitchy winds playing games with the contestants. The first match started off with, my personal favorite, 100 yards. Two Hunter shooters sat amidst the Varmint shooters and proved they could handle the kick of the bigger caliber rifle. I just love running both classes together, it’s a guaranteed great time. Our faithful Hunter shooters, Dean Thomas and Loren Lieder battled neck-n-neck for the throne of 1st place through all five targets. Dean Thomas made a great finish with a final score of 247-10X. Loren wasn’t far behind. His second place finish of 246-12X proved how close they were battling. Great job, Hunter Shooters! The attending Varmint for Score shooters were out for blood on this first match. When the smoke cleared and the bolts were all tucked away the final results showed 7 shooters closed out with a 250! Our top dog for 100 yards was Leonard Hensley with a slamming score of 250-22X. Hot on his heels, his wife Muriel Hensley sporting a 250-16Z. Watch out fellas, the ladies are in it to win it. High x-count for Hunter class was awarded to Loren Lieder 12X and Varmint For Score high x-count went to the 1st place winner, Leonard Hensley 22X. What a way to leave the gates for the opening race of the year Coyotes! I can never brag enough about the shooters I am honored to shoot with.

Like normal, a short lunch break was called to allow everyone to refuel and move the target frames to my personal nemesis, 200 yards. Our 2 Hunter shooters were feeding off each other I think. I’m pretty sure they weren’t intending it to happen this way but they almost shot identical targets with a few differences here and there. In the end, Loren took the 200 yard crown with a great score of 243-5X and the high x-count. Dean wasn’t far behind with a score of 241-3X. Watch out Hunter shooters, these two guys will make you work for your score. Shooters to the line! On the heels of the Hunter final scores Leonard wasn’t to be outdone. His final score of 25010X proved he was top dog of the day. But one little slip and the young Brandon McNairy would have scooped up Leonard’s 1st place with his 2nd place score of 250-9X. Unlike the previous yardage, these two gentlemen were the only holders of the coveted 250 score. High x-count was also awarded to Leonard. Top notch shooting guys! I was making sure to hold down 7th and 8th place all day. For the Grand Agg winners of Hunter class for the first two matches of our year, Loren took the crown and high x-count with his Agg of 489-17X. Not to be forgotten our Varmint for Score Grand Agg winner and x-count was Leonard with a whopping 500-32X! Take a bow Leonard not only did you earn that 1st place Grand Agg but you were the only shooter with a 500 for the day! This is what I mean when I say I shoot with the best… I’m still trying to figure out how to make 6th place a trophy holding spot. Sunday morning everyone gathered again at 200 yards. It seemed our Hunter shooters were doing a repeat of Saturday. Dean took 1st place with his outstanding score and high x-count of 249-9X. Excellent shooting Dean! Loren was right behind him with a 2nd place score of 244-2X. Awesome work guys! Varmint for Score shooters did a 180 flip. After spending the previous day

floating between 7th and 10th place, Jason Dill came out of nowhere with his 1st place win and score of 250-9X. However, I was right on his tail in 2nd place with my shocking score of 2508X. Must have been the coffee we had on the way out or something, this was 200 yards after all…my nemesis. Much to our surprise, we were the only holders of a 250 score in this match. However, Bud Schalles wasn’t to be out done by a couple of whippersnappers. His x-count of 10X won him bragging rights too! Great job shooters, great job. Our final battle ended on the 100 yard line. Hunters Loren and Dean were once again battling for the coveted 1st place. Loren came out on top with his smoking score of 249-9X, which he also claimed the high x-count. Dean wasn’t about to be left behind, he held 2nd place up high with his score of 249-5X. Way to go Hunter Shooters!

August, 2014 Precision Rifleman Varmint for Score shooters were once again trying to see how many folks could come up with a 250 and when it was said and done four shooters pulled it off. Our 1st place trophy was awarded to our awesome match director, Bud Schalles with a winning score and x-count of 250-17X. Our 2nd place trophy, now hold onto your seats, was awarded to me with my score of 25012X. It had to be the coffee or maybe the licorice Tina keeps in the stat house. Way to go Bud! While shooters began cleaning up and starting the tough task of loading everything back into their trucks, Tina was working away in the stat house to provide accurate final score tallies and get trophies into order for Bud to hand out. As usual she was done way before anyone else. We just can’t say enough about our score keeper and her speed. Grand Agg winner for Sunday for our duo of Hunter shooters went to Dean. He also took home the high x-count for the day. Awesome shooting Dean, 49814X! Not to be forgotten our 2nd place Hunter Agg winner Loren Lieder with a 493 11x. Can I get a round of applause for our Hunter shooters! Grand Agg winner in the Varmint for Score class for Sunday went to, and I nearly fell over, myself with a final score of 500-20X. High x-count was awarded to Bud Schalles for an amazing 27X. Woot woot to our winners! Dean Thomas take a bow for your Grand Agg weekend winning place with your smoking score of 986-27X in Hunter Class! Bud Schalles please take a bow for your Grand Agg weekend winning place with your sizzling score of 996-45X in Varmint for Score! And to all our shooters, great shooting! None of this could happen without the shooters who come to play and the top notch staff, match director and target crew. 2014 Agenda Items for Board Review

EASTERN REGION: 1) Legalize the Carlos Gonzales speed loader if it is appropriate to use the device at this time. If it is legal then some mention to the members should be made. (M.Newransky) 2) Extend the time between relays from 30 to 40 minutes. I think this can be a good procedure for new membership. (M.Newransky) 3) Enforce the present 30 minutes with a digital clock on site so it can be visually seen by everyone. (M.Newransky) 4) Establish a time countdown procedure for the time between relays by having the range master state relay x 6 minutes to shoot, relay x 4 minutes to shoot and relay x 2 minutes to shoot. Some range masters state this while others do not and some cut the time limit between relays. Therefore, the time between relays is shortened and is not the same for every shoot. This is important to new members as they will require more time to reload. Establish a procedure for the range master to survey the benches prior to starting a match. Some range masters do and some do not. (M.Newransky) 5) Establish a procedure that would require NBRSA members to purchase equipment from a registered FFL license holder. This may prevent any premature equipment failures or personnel injuries. (M.Newransky) 6) Establish a procedure for the Region Directors and others to visit and conduct a clinic at gun clubs in their area. This would promote interest in the NBRSA and perhaps increase membership. (M.Newransky) 7) Establish a class for teaching bench rest reloading and shooting for all

personnel. Jack does a fine job at the matches for rifle tuning etc. I took a class at Kelby”s taught by Greg Walley in 2008 that was very good. It was a two day class that he conducted for reloading, tuning, wind flags and shooting. I think it is very important to teach the fundamentals to all personnel. This may lead to a membership increase. Kelby’s charged $250 for the class and you did not have to bring anything. This class could be conducted at a modest cost or for free to personnel. (M.Newransky) The following items were submitted by B.Sauter: 9. No late fee or smoking. 10.Targets hung before next group. 11. Range officer weigh rifles. 12. Referee required for DQ. 13. Yardage wins hand out after the match or the start of the next day. There are more people there than at the award ceremony. Announced and handed out. 14. Bolo ties after each group. NORTHWEST REGION: 1. Discuss options when Shooter or Match rules are not followed at National events. (D.Zacanti) 2. Make Hunter/VFS a permanent Two Gun National.(D.Zacanti) 3. Make the NBRSA Trophy fee equal for all that give out (bowls, bolos, patch’s so on for multiple guns). (D.Zacanti) 4. Add the long range rules to the NBRSA Rules & By-Laws in its own section. That way all rules and shooting disciplines are in one binder. (D.Zacanti) NORTH CENTRAL: 1. Review trophy/national fee structure to ensure break-even status. (T.Meyer)

29

2. Review recognition structure for all National events and determine which placements should receive recognition and what that recognition should be. (ie: silver bowls, bolo ties or some other award.) (T.Meyer) 3. I am from Manitoba. Unfortunately, I do not get a membership every year. I buy it the years I plan on travelling to the US to compete. The distance that I need to travel to attend matches in the US really does not warrant buying one yearly other than to support the NBRSA. As you are aware, finances can be tight at times. So with finances and distance I have limited myself to travelling every other year. I propose that membership fees be lowered for Canadian and International shooters in this manner. Fees go up because of increases in printing costs and postage. Why not have an option to NOT have the magazine mailed to one if they request so? The magazine is available On-Line. I would be okay with that. It saves me a few dollars and is better for the environment. (C. Yanchycki) 4. Propose to e-mail out membership cards where the member can print it out themselves. This saves postage, printing of cards and sends a good message about being environmentally conscious. A lot of us have I-Phones or Androids where we can also carry an electronic copy of our Membership. (C.Yanchycki) 5. Discuss By-Law Rule changes and housekeeping. (T.Meyer) MISSISSIPPI VALLEY REGION: Change the format for the Group Nationals to the original format for 2015. (Bud Mundy) GC, SW, SE & MC Regions: No items.

Larry White Wins Two-Gun at Central Utah by Jim Erickson

May 3-4, 2014

We were treated to another great weather weekend…if you do not consider the wind. High’s in the 70’s and lows in the 50’s and partly cloudy all weekend. The looming weather front brought moderate wind Saturday and strong winds most of Sunday; but no rain! Mirage was generally light and the pesky bugs hadn’t come out of hibernation. All-inall, it was a great weekend to be out shooting and we had contestants from six western states here to shake off their winter blues and start another benchrest season started. You gotta love spring and the verdant Hobble Creek Canyon where we hold our tournaments…Relay one to the line! And so it began with Gary Vanlier shooting the small group of match one with a nice .106 group that was also small group for the yardage. Larry White had the small group for both match two, a .152 and match 4, a .206. Joe Olas shot the smallest group for match three with a .194 and Lowell Frei shot the small group in match five with a .183. Larry White won the Sporter 100 with a .2386 agg distancing himself from Dave Gibson’s second place agg of .2662 and Joe Olas’s .2960 third place finish. The Unlimited 100 started after a very filling pizza lunch break, and the lunch really agreed with Dave Gibson as he shot the small groups for the first three matches! Dave, shooting Butch Kimmel’s under slung rail, shot a .311, .260 and a .298 distancing himself from the rest of the pack. Tom Guisewhite won match four with a .234 and Dave Woodward

won match five with an identical .234 group, both of which were small group for the yardage. No surprise here, Dave Gibson win’s the Unlimited 100 with a .3324 agg. Travis Olsen, a new first time bench rest shooter, comes in second with a .3730 agg. Larry White, always hanging around, comes in third with a .3740 agg. Sunday dawns a beautiful wind free morning, but not for long as by nine am the wind is gusting and wrecking groups. Dave Gibson managed to shoot both the small group for match one and the Unlimited 200 yardage, a nice .438. Joe Olas’s .655 takes match two and Dave Woodard’s .710 wins match three. Tom Guisewhite wins match four with a .799 and Larry White closes out the yardage with an .836 small group. Tom Guisewhite wins the yardage with a .3962 agg followed by Dave Woodward in second place and Joe Olas is third. Tom Guisewhite wins the Unlimited Grand with a .4009 agg followed by Dave Gibson in second and Larry White in third place. After lunch, the Sporter 200 begins with Lowell Frei wining match one with a .385 small group. New shooter Travis Olsen wins match two with a .616. Dean Parker shoots the small groups in both match three and four with a .529 and .608 and Dave Woodward wins match five with a .681 small group. Lowell Frei wins the Sporter 200 with a .3871 agg. Scott Smith takes second place and Jim Bawden comes in third place. Larry White wins the Sporter Grand with Jim Bawden taking second place and Lowell Frei comes in third. Shooting steady

all weekend, Larry White wins the Sporter/Unlimited Two Gun Championship. Dave Gibson comes in second and Tom Guisewhite takes third in the first leg of the Utah State Four Gun Championship. Thanks to Dave Tunbridge, Joe Olas and Jim Erickson for all their work and efforts in putting on our tournaments. A big thanks to Shane, Marsha, Misty and Justin our range and match crew. And a sincere thanks to all who came and participated. We appreciate your continuing support and look forward to seeing you in August. Until then, safe travels and small groups. Special Announcement

I am very excited to announce that starting in October, Berger Bullets returns to running benchrest matches at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility in Phoenix, Arizona. In 1982, Walt Berger started running these matches. In roughly

2000, after Berger was sold and the move to California was announced, we knew we would not be in a position to continue running matches. This was a very difficult time for Berger and I can’t describe how gratifying it is to put this situation back to what it was before. As far as I am concerned, Berger Bullets is finally whole again. Even though this move essentially puts things back as they were before Berger was sold, we are also fortunate that many things have changed. Berger has been blessed with growth that has brought us to the point where we are able to bring more resources to the benchrest matches than we ever could before. I won’t go into the details of our plan but I can relay that we will be focusing our energy on two important areas: 1. Providing competitors with a fair and smoothly operating match based entirely on the requirements provided in the rule book. 2. Providing competitors with as many shooter comforts as possible in a deliberate effort to enhance the shooting experience. I want to thank Art Clegg and Ed Maxwell for their hard work running these matches and for allowing us to take over again. I know from experience

that this is a thankless job done entirely for the love of the sport. It is clear from the quality of the frames they’ve built to the hard work they’ve put into making sure that the match can run smoothly that Art and Ed have poured their hearts into these matches. We will honor their efforts by taking what they’ve done and expanding upon it in as many ways as we can to further enhance the benchrest competition shooting experience in Phoenix. In a time when talk of benchrest dying off is more common than I recall in past years, I am very excited to be able to do what we can to preserve a sport that is at Berger Bullets’ very core. Precision rifle shooting is the ultimate activity for the the discerning rifle shooter and short range benchrest group shooting is the most challenging precision rifle competition in the world. Some have asked me why I believed we are compelled to get this deeply involved in benchrest competition. The answer is simple. I’ve got nothing better (or more important) to do today.

LT32 POWDER INFO WANTED!

If you use LT32 in your shooting, we want to hear from you! Please call or email Rob Behr at Western Powders at 406 234-0422 or rob@ramshot.com.

Patience Is a Virtue

I know some of you have been patiently waiting to see your match results in the magazine. Thank you for this. To those not so gifted in this virtue, please remember it’s a one person show here and the busy season is upon us. Stay focused on shooting those small groups and X’s and I’ll keep working as hard as I can to get your results published as quick as possible. Also, Match Directors, please pay close attention to the Registered Match Calendar. I try my best to get things correct the first time, but if it isn’t, I rely on you (and the members) to let me know so I can fix it quickly. Thank you for all your cards and calls supporting benchrest and the magazine. I am very grateful for your continued support and wish you all the very best. --Audrey Brown
