...And It Worked! Background: A little over a year ago, I told a relatively new friend that there was a benchrest match at the Visalia range the following weekend. He and I stopped by, and I introduced him around. A few months after that, he took the plunge, buying a very nice, slightly used two gun complete setup, rifles, reloading equipment, scopes, and components, worked up loads, and entered his first match. Having spent a good deal of time building very well done super modified engines, the same attention to detail, and intuitive mechanical problem solving abilities that had produced the extra horsepower in his engines, was focused on the new problem. To no one’s surprise, he made a very good start, right up to the match where conditions were such that finding a condition became almost impossible and his progress seemed to take a pause. I’m familiar with his shooting style and I could see that in a fast and inconsistent switch, that his staying behind the scope at all times was resulting in some disadvantage in getting the best possible read on the flags, and selecting the best time to shoot; so I suggested that he try practicing shooting with his head up. This was not entirely an off the wall suggestion
since he had already chosen to shoot free recoil and was getting some very good groups that way. His rifle and rest setup seemed to favor it, so simply raising his head after aiming and pulling the trigger without looking back through the scope seemed to be a minor change, but as it turned out, some adjustment was required. The next match was shaping up to be another windy one, so among other things that he checked out during the Friday practice day was shooting head up. The groups were significantly larger than with his usual procedure. They were horizontal and significantly wider; not of competitive size. The first thought was that his Farley rest might not have been set with enough preload to be reliable with his hand off of the joystick. For the moment, head up was abandoned but that changed. The match was heavy varmint and unlimited. Since he did not have a rail gun and did not want to put the extra rounds on what had proven in practice to be a very good barrel, he had initially decided to only shoot HV. The schedule was to shoot 100 on Saturday, and 200 on Sunday. After he finished on Saturday morning and done all of his preparation for the next day’s shooting (when HV 200 would be in the
by Boyd Allen afternoon), he spent the remainder of the afternoon watching one of the better shooters. He noted the condition he chose to shoot in, what the flags were doing and the results on target. I would guess that it was afterwards that his desire to do another experiment got the better of him, so he shot the next morning against the rail guns. Figured out what the problem with his setup was that had caused the problem shooting head up, made the adjustment and proceeded to shoot a screamer. A 0.170 at 200 with his HV rifle. Hint: The problem wasn’t the rest. I really should leave you wondering what he changed, but that would make a poor ending to the story, so I will tell you (after checking with him before giving it away). He moved his rear bag (a gator) forward just enough so that his chest no longer touched it. It seems that when he raised his head that his body shifted in a way that it did not with his usual position, nudging his rifle off from where he had aimed it. So there you have it. Don Forbes, a new shooter from Selma, CA shot his first screamer while trying something different, instead of just trying harder. Way to go Don.
26th Annual Hog Roast Results by Bill Reahard & Jerry Van Sickle
May 3-4 were the dates of the 26th Annual Hog Roast and ninety-seven shooters showed up to test their skills. It was a great match with the exception of one itty-bitty computer glitch which sent one shooter off the results list. This was significant since the Hog Roast is a WBC-13 qualifier. The issue was corrected and following are the results. These may be a bit later then hoped, but they are correct. Thank you everyone for attending. We hope you had a great time.

September, 2014 Precision Rifleman switching winds from the left, right and rear, which were enough to cause everyone problems except for the two men named Chuck. In the VFS class at 100 yards, the winner was Chuck Miller with a 250-12X, second was Ron Hoehn with 249-19X and third was Jeff Conover with 24918X. At 200 yards Chuck again took the lead with Ron a close second and Dennis Boyet taking third with a 2425X. The Grand was a repeat of the 200-yard top three performers. Chuck Miller was clearly the winner with 49914X, second was Ron Hoehn with 49225X and third was Dennis Boyet with 491-17X. This Hunter match was a memorial honoring a hunter competitor of the past...Bill Waldrop. Bill was a great friend to us all and a really dedicated hunter class shooter. At 100 yards the winner was Chuck Hearn with 25014X, Second was Wayne Corley with 249-10X and third was Joe Hemkens with 248-15X. At 200 yards the winner was Wayne Corley with 241-1X, with Chuck Hearn placing second with 240-2X and Paul Hon in third with 2376X. The grand repeated the 200 yard stage with Chuck Hearn in first with 490-16X, Wayne Corley placed second with 490-11X and third was Paul Hon with 485-19X. Thanks to all for coming out. Oak Hill: Swimming Upstream by Cecil Peterson We have all known people and even ourselves who just seem to do things the hard way. They may finish or end up a winner but was theirs an easier way? Is there an easier and more predictable path to success or the winner’s circle? These people right or wrong, seem to be labeled as, “swimming upstream”. At Oak Hill Gun Club, both the April and May match Grand Agg winners did not win a yardage. This certainly does not indicate luck was on their side, but rather they had to shoot both yardages well. The HV100 was controlled by Kenneth Stone followed by Keith Christianson, Larry Caston, Jim Carstensen and Larry Rickertson. Keith Christianson had the small group with a 0.129. The 200 yard event was contested with challenging winds, switches, lulls and quick reversals. These conditions did not bother Jim Carstensen, who bettered Dean Ekstrom, Bob Cotton, Cecil Peterson and Larry Caston. Small group was claimed by Cecil Peterson with a 0.370. The Grand Agg winner for Oak Hill May 25, 2014 Heavy Varmint contest was won by 0.0131 but the winner did not win a yardage. As you can see, this occasionally happens if you are a Hard, Persistent, Never-Give-Up Attitude, but it’s like, “swimming upstream”. Keith Christianson was crowned the winner, (best swimmer), followed by Jim Carstensen, Larry Caston, Dean Ekstrom and Kenneth Stone. Please review the following results. Name Keith Christianson Jim Carstensen Larry Caston Dean Ekstrom Kenneth Stone Jerry King Jerry Wick Bob Cotton Louis Kerhlikar Larry Rickertson Jim Schmidt Wes Johnson Cecil Peterson

May 25, 2014 600-Yard Competition
The day way like any other except the wind was calm throughout the day. This made the 600 yard match much more rewarding. Everyone had a good time. Some of the regulars placed in the top and some new front runners are coming up to bat. It’s nice to mix them up from time to time. No world records broken this time but we’re always watching. I would like to give a special thanks to Gary Childs for helping out with the target measuring and to Mike Mounov for score keeping. Our scoring program isn’t quite refined yet but it’s getting there. After every event, we always enjoy a nice BBQ to finish off the day. Thanks to all the participants who helped out. Land’s End Benchrest Group Competition by Truman Wilson
May 16-17, 2014 HV Leg of 4-Gun Challenge With the temperature in the low 40’s under a bright blue sky, twenty eight competitors along with crew and guests gathered for a short dedication ceremony of bench 7 that Bobby Prather used in his last “home range” competition. Bobby enjoyed shooting his UNL and took great delight in winning a yardage and placing second in the Grand from that bench in July of 2013. Bobby knew how to have fun and it seemed that fun followed and even sought him out when things got dull. In the future we will all remember the harmless pranks and hardy laughs that followed Bobby whenever we see his brass plaque on his last bench. In a gentle switching breeze, Dennis Prendergast shot a .175 for the first small group of the day in the LV100. Visitor and Dasher-Dan Dowling relative, Daryl Dudley claimed the second small group with a .174. In the third match Tom Stiner pulled out all the stops and shot a .108 which was also the yardage small group. Lowell Frei was steadily gaining ground and took a big step forward on the fourth target with a .112 small group. As lunch time neared, the temperature was warming up and so was the competition as Larry White shot a .164 for the small group. Larry’s effort was too little too late, He finished second to Lowell Frei in the aggregate. Target frames were moved to 200 and a tasty lunch under our belts, we started the LV200 with temperatures in the mid 50’s and slightly more vig-
orous breezes. Dave Tunbridge took the first match with a .517 and also took the third match with a .310. First time shooter Kelly Ellis shot a .560 on the second target in thickening mirage. Jumping to the fourth match, Cliff McNairy who has attended every competition ever held at Lands End, shot a .384 for small group. On the last target Mike Beard got the small group with a .598. Cliff McNairy, with only one target over an inch, took the aggregate. Sunday morning was bright and clear with temperatures in the high 40’s. By noon it warmed to the low 60’s with switching, brisk breezes and a good bit of mirage. The HV200 started at 8AM with Mike Beard leading the parade with a .452 small group for the first match. Second match went to Truman Wilson with a .495. The third match went to steady shooting Dave Gibson with a .311. On the fourth target Lowell Frei got his foot in the door with a .532 small group. The fifth small group went to nice guy Jack Duncan from the eastern slope with a .320. Three titans battled it out, with Gibson finishing in first, Beard in second, and Frei in third for the agg. Sunday after a catered BBQ lunch and target frames moved to 100yds, we started the HV100. Lowell Frei took the first match with a .220 small group. Larry White (from the neighborhood) took the second match with a .242. Tom Stiner took the third match with a .182 and thought he was going to get the Small Group Lizard, but he didn’t. On the fourth target Lowell Frei displayed his skill
by taking Stiner’s Lizard from him with a .179 small group. The fifth match was won by Wyoming citizen Dennis Prendergast with a .241 and steady-shooting Larry White took the aggregate. The results follow. Thanks to the new competitors and old friends for shooting with us. We appreciate your efforts and patronage and look forward to seeing all those determined faces in the future. Tyler is Best In The West
By Mark Motsko, Whittington Center Benchrest Match Director Raton opens with a bang, as WBC12 members Tyler & Adams vie for the Alvin Davidson Memorial Trophy at the Best in the West... An unusually wet and cool Memorial Day weekend greeted 39 shooters for the 2014 Best in the West shoot at the picturesque Whittington Center in New Mexico. Temperatures were in the low 70’s with bright sun, winds switched by the hour and even some afternoon thunderstorms on Saturday brought a little hail. Shooters experienced every kind of weather in a few short hours. Saturday morning started off calm, as was indicated by the numerous small groups in the first two LV100 matches. Raton newbie (as this reporter has been covering the shoots for four years now and can’t remember meeting him) George Lozano out of California started hot with a .129 in the first match followed closely by Ed Maxwell with a .144. Charles Huckeba shot a .184 while Albuquerque’s Amanda Lax, who only three short years ago was running targets for this shoot, rounded out the top five with a .194. In the second match, Dr. Bart Carl’s .158 put him in the lead, while Dean Thomas moved to second. Lozano held third. Larry White’s .115 in the second match moved him to fourth place while Ray Barnes moved into 5th. White’s small group held up in the third match, but a .315 dropped him to 8th place. Lozano regained the lead after the third match with a .172, while Ed Adams’ .185 moved him into second place. Chuck Miller, Bob Brackney and Jim Hemmert all shot sub .200’s to take spots three through five. Brackney’s hot hand continued in the fourth match, as a .113 won him the trophy for small group and a nice little cash prize. Additionally he leapfrogged the field to the top spot, bumping Lozano to 2nd, Adams to 3rd, Miller to 4th and Hemmert to 5th. Brackney shot a .240 in the final match of the morning, but it couldn’t keep him from holding off Ed Adams for the win, whose .149 was small group for the fifth and final match with an agg of .1904. Adams was
looking to make it four in a row for the Alvin Davidson trophy, as he won the Best in the West in 2011, 2012, and 2013. Brackney finished second with a .2000 agg, while Todd ‘Catfish’ Tyler took home the third place trophy with a .2206. George Lozano finished fourth with a .2236 and Butch Fjoser rounded out the top five with a .2256. After lunch the winds picked up a little bit, but that didn’t keep Adams from continuing his hot streak as he shot out of the gate with a .166 for the first match of the HV100. Dennis Wagner was on his heels with a .175 while Todd Tyler’s .198 was good for third place. Lowell Frei’s .213 and Richard Brensing’s (great to see you back in Raton, Richard) .239 rounded out the top five. Adams’ bested his first match score with a .161 in the second, while Wagner remained in second with a .219. Bud Mundy’s .181 pushed Tyler into fourth place while Bob Brackney’s .205 moved him to fifth. Adams opened the door for the field as a .458 in the third match dropped him to fifth place. Dennis Wagner seized the opportunity with a .243 to take the top spot, with Mundy in second, Tom Libby III’s .161 vaulted him into third place one spot ahead of Tyler. Dewayne Stafford sat in the middle of the pack, but his .157 in the third match won him the small group trophy and a cash prize. After the fourth match Wagner continued to lead with a .194, but Adams’s .245 got him back into the thick of things in second place as his competitors didn’t fair as well. Mundy held onto the third spot with a .216 while Tyler remained in fourth with a .281. Durward Wofford’s .196 jumped him into fifth. A few years ago, the then head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs famously responded to a reporter’s questions with the answer “You play to win the game!” As we all know, in benchrest where anything and everything could happen, the standings after four matches are not indicative of anything. Todd ‘Catfish’ Tyler plays to win the game. His .219 in the final match of the day gave him a winning agg of

.2556. But Ed Adams has also been known to play to win. Today however, his final match score of .249 was only good enough for second, with an achingly close agg of .2558! Dennis Wagner won the third place trophy with a .2570, while Mundy’s .2620 and Brackney’s .2724 placed them in fourth and fifth, respectively. After the targets were moved to 200 yards, the shooters practiced for a couple of hours before the aforementioned thunderstorm with hail ended most competitors practice time. Sunday morning, calm winds allowed Todd Tyler to stay hot with a .146 in the first match of the HV200. Tyler walked off with a small group trophy and cash prize for his efforts. The question then on everyone’s mind was would he be able to fend off the rest of the field for the next four matches. Tyler was still in first after the second match, with a .541. Lowell Frei’s .394 moved him into second, while Larry Leser’s .482 put him in third. Ed Adams and Tyler Adams rounded out the top five. After three, Tyler maintained his lead, while Leser and Frei leap-frogged each other for second and third place. Tyler Adams moved into fourth while Dave Gibson’s .511 raised him to the fifth spot. Todd Tyler widened his lead after the fourth match, while Keith Cottrell, who we hadn’t seen in New Mexico since 2012, moved into second place, jumping over Frei, Leser and Gibson. Could Tyler run wire to wire in the HV200? The answer was a resounding ‘yes’. Tyler’s .417 in the fifth match sealed the deal for the Rio Ranchoan with a .2095 agg, while Gibson’s .386, the small group of the fifth match won him the trophy for second place with a .2456 agg. Keith Cottrell won a trophy (but just missed the cash prize) for third place with a .2471. Frei’s .2482 was small enough for fourth place, while Larry White’s .2886 gave him fifth. In the HV Grand Agg, Tyler took first with a .2325 with Ed Adams coming in second with a .2824. Keith Cottrell didn’t seem to lose any accuracy with his year long absence finishing third at .2964 while George Lozano and Charles Huckeba rounded out the top five shooting .2966 and .2989 respectively. Trying to keep the most ideal conditions, the LV200 began immediately
following the Heavy Varmint. Keith Cottrell continued his hot hand with a .347 out of the gate followed by Ed Maxwell’s .366, Dean Thomas’ .417, Charles Huckeba’s .421 and Bud Mundy’s .481. Cottrell maintained his lead after the second match with a .585, while Michael Beard’s .477 moved him into second. Mundy, George Lozano, and Lowell Frei rounded out the top five. Ed Adams’ .335 won him the small group for the shoot, and a nice little cash prize. After an early lunch, Lozano bumped Cottrell for the top spot after the third match with a .459. Adams moved into third, followed by Mundy and Frei. After four, Adams moved into the top spot with a match small group of .350. Cottrell and Lozano switched second and third place. Mundy remained in fourth, and Bob Brackney took fifth. Once the dust settled after the final match of the weekend, Todd Tyler’s late surge couldn’t quite over take Adams for the top spot of the LV200. Adams’ agg of .2822 bested Tyler’s .3112, Brackney’s .3118, Lozano’s .3131 and Mundy’s .3465. But would it be enough to maintain possession of the traveling Davidson trophy? In the Light Grand Agg, Adam’s walked away with the first place trophy with a .2383. Bob Brackney finished second at .2559, Todd Tyler third with .2659, George Lozano’s .2684 won him the fourth place trophy and Charles Huckeba rounded out the top five with a .2932. Finally, when the computer calculated all the numbers, the winner of the 2014 Best of the West shoot was Todd Tyler! Tyler breaks Adams three year win streak and regains the title he won in 2010 by a score of .2492 to .2594. George Lozano’s .2825 placed him in third, followed by Bob Brackney’s .2888 and Charles Huckeba’s .2961. Oak Hill Gun Club’s The Whipping Post June 15, 2014 The whipping post is a place where public humiliation/pain taken place. This has been so in the past and remains so today. We witnessed such a whipping of gentlemen benchrest shooters at Oak Hill on this day. An “out-of-towner” showed up wanting to know where the shoot was. Well, he was bigger than most of us, so we let him stick around and tried not to make him mad. He put his stuff on bench 3 and said, “let’s get this shoot going before I have to go home and crush some rock.” (We all thought at this time that he must have been a prison escapee...don’t want to make this one mad.) Well, the weather was beautiful, skies clear and wind from everywhere at all speeds, so we began. This “outof towner” also had the weatherman buffaloed in that conditions for bench 3 were calm all day, while the rest of us had to put up with winds from the local hurricane. It must have been this way because I can find no other explanation how he could beat us experienced gentlemen at our own game. The “Rock Crusher” had a score at the 100 yard whipping post of 0.1950 with his closest competition of 0.2910. We knew at this point the whipping was starting and we had better get serious or he was going to take all our wood home with him. Our best shooters, Jim Carstensen, Dean Ekstrom, Jerry King and Mike Bigelow fought courageously and even Jerry King beat everyone with one group...except the “Rock Crusher”. We tried the same game at the 200 yard whipping post but the “Rock Crusher” had a score of 0.2497 and our local boys best score was 0.3013. We were asking for “Mercy” at this point and requesting the shoot to stop.

Yellowstone Rifle Club by Ryan Lienemann, Match Director
Spring Hunter & VFS Match Tim Naugle Wins Hunter & Russell Cree Takes VFS The benchrest shooters who attended the May 24-25 HBR/VFS match at the Yellowstone Rifle Club in Billings Montana took advantage of the favorable shooting conditions to start off the season with some great scores. Temperatures were in the 60s all weekend with mild winds & partly cloudy skies. Things got underway on Saturday morning with the 100-yard HBR match. The first few record targets saw a dropped point for most of the shooters, but soon the boys had their rifles all warmed up and their game faces on. Durwood Hansen took first place with a 250-19X. Second was Ryan Lienemann with a 250-9X followed by Jack Foster in third with a 249-17X. After lunch we rotated five benches and moved on to the 200-yard HBR match. The wind picked up a bit in the afternoon, with some surprise attacks that caused a few more dropped points along with some corresponding remarks of discontent from the firing line. First place went to Tim Naugle with a 248-12X, Ryan Lienemann posted a 247-7X that took second place and Russell Cree was not far behind with a 247-4X for third. The 200-yard scores drove the HBR grand aggregates with repeat wins by Tim Naugle in first place with a 49725X. Ryan Lienemann took home the second place trophy with a 497-16X and Russell Cree held on for third with a 496-19X. Durwood Hansen got the prize for the most X’s with 26. We returned to the range on Sunday morning to commence with the 200yard VFS match and were greeted by nearly dead calm conditions that lasted throughout the rest of the day. This led to an amazing number of perfectscore targets with high X counts. Several of the first place scores were near world records. The veteran shooters in attendance could not remember when so many 250’s had been shot on this range during a single match. At
200-yards Dave Hellekson came out on top and took first place with a 250-12X that was just a couple of X’s less than the current world record. Durwood Hansen was next in line with his 25011X for second, and third place went to Tim Naugle with a 250-10X. A total of six shooters posted 250 scores at 200 yards! Everyone refueled with another tasty lunch and then we rotated another five benches and started up the 100-yard VFS match to round out the weekend. The calm conditions continued and six more 250 scores were put on the board. Russell Cree got first place and nearly achieved perfection with a 250-23X that was also just a couple of X’s less than the current world record. Bob Lunder posted a fine 250-21X that took second place and Durwood Hansen won the tie for third with a score of 250-20X. In the VFS grand aggregate, perfect
scores of 500 ran all the way through fifth place! Russell Cree got the first place trophy with a 500-32X that was again approaching the existing world record. Durwood Hansen came in second with a 500-31X and Dave Hellekson won the tie for third with a 50029X. Russell Cree put up the most X’s in VFS with a count of 32. I want to congratulate the winners and give a big thanks to my wife Ginger Lienemann for putting on the lunches and also running the target crew along with Hailey Anderson and my two sons Kyle and Tyler Lienemann. Thanks also to everyone who attended the match and supported the Yellowstone Club. St Louis’ East-West Show-Me Shootout Billy Stevens ALMOST Stopped the Unstoppable Tony Boyer by Nancy Scarbrough The 11th Annual East-West Show-Me Shootout had 112 shooters who came to St Louis to scratch and claw their way to obtain WBC points. Stormy weather was in the forecast but it held off until late afternoon and into the night, making Saturday & Sunday HOT-HUMID with CALM Conditions. To start us out, Tony Alexander was on fire and won the LV100 with a .1536 agg. He also shot the small group with a .087. Switching to HV100 in the afternoon Mike Bryant won with a .1744 agg and Bob Scarbrough Jr. took the small group with a .084. Sunday morning we started out with HV200. Conditions were very calm which allowed for a lot of small groups. Billy Stevens shot a .1741 agg. in the HV200 and Tony Boyer snagged the small group shooting a .184. Finishing off the match in the afternoon, Tony Boyer won the LV200 with a .2003 agg and small group was shot by Greg King with a .201. When it was all said and done, Tony Boyer won the LV Grand shooting a .1935 and Billy Stevens emerged master of the HV Grand with his .1849 agg. With the calculations for the Two-Gun completed, it was hats off to the unstoppable Tony Boyer with a .1956. The BRRC would like to thank all the shooters who came out and participated. A special thank you to the target crew who worked tirelessly running targets in such undesirable weather and to the people behind the scene who made it possible; Scorer, Statistician, Range Master and Scott Piper. Without them this match would not be possible. September, 2014 Precision Rifleman
It takes a lot of time. I spend a lot of time in my dedicated loading room testing loads and barrels to find the best ones for club shoots, squirrels and of course use the best barrels for big matches. My daughter, Canada began shooting with me about 4 years ago in the squirrel fields with my .223 coyote gun. It didn’t take but a day before she was consistently hitting the little buggers at 300yds plus. Next day she was shooting a 6BR and stretching out to 400 plus. The next thing was club matches 5 times a month at 600 yards where she was right on my tail in both group and score and consistently beat the other guys. Since she was doing so good at the local matches I knew she had the potential to do good at the bigger ones. So I hatched a plan. I was going to build another 6 Dasher anyway, so I told her mom that the new dasher was for Canada so she would be competitive at the 1000 yard matches. It worked. Canada was happy. Momma was happy and “Betty Boop,” now Canada’s gun was built. Teaching Canada to shoot was easy. First, she is competitive by nature and most important she was willing to
listen and follow instructions. She practices her technique throughout the year when not at a match. (We’ll keep our/her practice techniques secret.) I truly believe there is no reason that women cannot be competitive in bench rest shooting. For new shooters it would be good to find a fellow shooter that would act as a coach; someone with knowledge of the long range game that they could learn from. The next thing, and very important is attention to detail in every aspect of bench technique, load and load development. Using a component gunsmith for chambering and action bedding is important because without this, you can be the best shooter in the world and if you don’t have a good rifle, you’ll not finish high up in the standings.

Boone Valley Ikes Score Shoot by Ronnie Berg, Match Director
We had a great turn out for our first NBRSA score match. Eighteen shooters shot on Saturday in Hunter & VFS. Winds were blowing making for tough conditions at 100 yards. Mike Bigelow’s 250-13X took first place in Hunter with Craig Nagel in second with 249-10X and in third place was Bruce Hansen with 249-10X. In VFS (Saturday) 100 yards, Brett Stiner took the win with a tidy 250-14X, with Mike Shapoval in second scoring 250-11X. Bob Pool placed third with 250-10X, then broke for lunch and moved targets out to the 200 yard line. It was still tricky wind conditions but Mike Bigelow held onto the hunter lead with a 248-6X followed by Craig Nagel in second with 245-4X and Randy Robinett shooting 244-5X to round out the top three. In VFS 200 yards. Tom Gollob shot first place with his 246-6X and Paul Whitmore took second with 243-1X. Third place was Bevan Everett with 241-5X. Moving on to the Hunter Grand, it was clear to see Mike Bigelow was in first place with 498-19X. Craig Nagel landed second with 494-14x and Randy Robinett took third with 491-17X. (As
a little side note: Randy was shooting his 25 cal. Hunter gun.)VFS Grand first place was Tom Gollob shooting a 49518X, with second to Paul Whitmore and his 493-14X. Mike Shapoval placed third with 491-13X. Sunday’s VFS had seventeen shooters. The 100 yard stage was not too bad but if you blinked your eyes at the wrong time your shot made you sad. In first place was Jeff Shultz 250-18X, followed by Dean Walther 250-18X and in third place Ronnie Berg 250-15X. After a nice lunch break we set up for 200 yards. This was when the fun started; out of 90 targets only ten 50’s were shot! Whatever caused this no one figured out. In first place was Dean Walther 245-1X, second was Dave Brooks 244-5X and third place went to Craig Nagel 243-2X. VFS Grand Aggregate top honors went to Dean Walther 49519X, with second place to Craig Nagel shooting a 492-14X and in third was Dan Williams 491-18X. The Two Gun (Saturdays Hunter Score/ Sundays VFS) eight shooters were eligible and first place went to Mike Bigelow 986-36X, Second went to Craig Nagel 986-28X and in third place was

Everet Smith is Nevada State Champion by Mark Ronchetti
The first two benchrest matches held this season at the Washoe County Regional Shooting Facility north of Reno were just two weeks apart with the LV/ HV leg contested on May 24-25th and the Sporter/Unlimited 5-Shot on June 7-8th. We had a small group of shooters as many of our “regulars” from California were competing in Sacramento both of those weekends; however, Chris Baitx from Crowley Lake, CA made the 5 hour trek both weekends to shoot his first benchrest matches with equipment borrowed from his cousin, Pete Savage. We started the 24th with typical Nevada windy conditions at LV200 with Everet Smith winning with a .4816 agg followed by Mark Ronchetti’s .4860 and Lonnie Gordon was third with a .5025. Don Archibald earned small group with a .505” group in the last match in tough conditions. We switched to HV200 after a lunch break and Don Archibald picked up
where he left off in his LV small group and won with a .4703 agg followed by his grandson, Travis Archibald in second with a .4824 and third place went to Everet Smith with a .5408. Small group went to Steve Archibald, a .502”. After rotating benches on Sunday and setting up our wind flags for 100 yards, we started HV with more manageable wind conditions. Mark Ronchetti took the agg shooting a .2534. Everet Smith was second with a .2910 and Jan Sarras took third with a .3170. Small group was .139” by Mark Ronchetti. The wind picked up throughout the morning and after a short break we went to the line to compete for LV100. The top three standings remained the same as in HV earlier with Mark Ronchetti completing the agg with a .2688, followed by Everet Smith with a .3240 and Jan Sarras with a .3700. On a side note, Chris Baitx was competing with a gun that was several ounces overweight for LV, but would have edged out Jan Sarras for third had the gun been legal. Great shooting by Chris on his first weekend of benchrest! Moving to the Grand Aggregate re-
sults, Everet Smith of Mount Shasta, CA won the HV with a .4159 followed by Arizona’s Pete Savage and his cousin Chris in third. Mark Ronchetti won the LV Grand with a .3774, Everet Smith finished second and Sarah Archibald was third. By shooting consistently, Everet Smith was our 2-Gun Nevada State Champion with a Grand Agg of .4094. Mark Ronchetti and Steve Archibald rounded out the top three in the 2-Gun.
Nevada State Championship Fast forward two weeks to complete the NV State Shoot with the Sporter and Unlimited classes. Saturday June 7th brought tough wind conditions again as we set up for Sporter 200. After a few glitches and having to call a cease fire on our first match and put up fresh targets, we were off and running. Everet Smith showed us he was all business about our state championship by winning the agg with a .3963 and shooting small group, a .358”. Jan Sarras finished second with a .4042 and Mark
L-R: Travis (Bat Man) Archibald, Jan Sarras, Steve Archibald, Lonnie Gordon Mark Ronchetti, Pete Savage and Champion, Everet Smith
September, 2014 Precision Rifleman Ronchetti was third with a .4188. After some of the competitors lugged their rail guns onto their benches and got them dialed in, we were ready for Unlimited 200. Travis Archibald shot very well out of the gate with two of five match winners, one of which was small group, a .306”. Travis wrapped up the day with an agg win of .3830, followed by Lonnie Gordon with a .4073 and Steve Archibald in third with a .4342. All three were shooting rail guns. We rotated benches on Sunday morning and continued with Unlimited 100. (Yes, it was windy). Competing with his HV bag gun, Everet Smith showed us how it’s done, shooting two of five match winners and winning the agg handsomely with a .2522. Mark Ronchetti finished second with a .3030 and third went to Jan Sarras who shot a nice .156” small group and .3070 agg. We ended the day and last agg of the championship with Sporter 100. Pete Savage came alive and found a condition he could shoot in, posting three match winners, small group of .198” and agg win of .3248. Lonnie Gordon took second with a .3656 and Mark Ronchetti was third with a .3786. On to the Grand winners. For the Unlimited, Everet Smith, shooting his bag gun, won first place with a .3586 while Lonnie Gordon finished second and Travis Archibald third place. Mark Ronchetti won the Sporter Grand with a .3987 followed by Jan Sarras in second and Everet Smith in third. Finishing second and third respectively in both the Three and Four Guns were Mark Ronchetti and Jan Sarras. But it was Everet Smith who took home the top awards in both the Three and Four Gun adding to his Two Gun win to become Nevada’s State Champion for 2014. Congratulations to Everet and thanks to all shooters who competed. Thanks to our Range Master, Bob Hoppe for running the firing line. A big thank you to our sister team target and scoring crew Kelly Marsh and Kerry Sarras for battling the wind to keep our targets and backers from blowing away… even with Kerry on crutches after foot surgery! We couldn’t hold our matches without them. Please note we are hosting the 2014 Longe Range Varmint Nationals on September 6th & 7th with sight in and set up on Friday the 5th. Hope you come.

Winds of Change Blowing In New Mexico? Mark Motsko, Whittington Center Benchrest Match Director
The purpose of most sporting events is to prove ones mettle against someone else: Are you stronger, faster or do you have a better team than your opponent? Can you make more baskets, score more touchdowns or out box the man in front of you? Granted, while the scores on the ‘wailing wall’ indicate who is in first place, shooting benchrest is a sport where it is just competitor and rifle with a piece of paper either 300 or 600 feet away from them. The shooters decisions-and only their decisions, determine what happens by the time the clock runs out on each match. While some are content with shooting only in idea conditions, twenty-two men who chose to challenge themselves against the greatest opponent in our sport, Mother Nature, came to Raton, New Mexico to shoot the first half of the New Mexico Four Gun State Championship in June. On Saturday two shoots occur simultaneously, the State 10-shot Unlimited and a Heavy Varmint. Thirteen shooters are vying for the New Mexico Four Gun Championship to be decided during the points shoot at the Rattlesnake. Nine others decided to throw their hat in the ring for the 3-gun trophies. Morning conditions were less than ideal with swirling winds, but Arizona’s Bob Brackney set the bar for the 100 yard 10 shot unlimited with a small group of .171. Roger Tillery was close behind with a .187 and Albuquerque’s Ed Adams was in third shooting a .265. In the 100 yard heavy varmint match, Kansas’ Jim Hemmert started strong with a .183 followed closely by Durward Wofford out of Melrose, NM who shot a .194. James Williams was third with a .237. In the second unlimited match, Brackney kept the pressure on with a .188, while Todd Tyler bumped Tillery out of second with a .238. Tillery moved to third with a .367. In the heavy, Wofford and Hemmert flipflopped first and second when Wofford shot a .151 to Hemmert’s .288. R.B. Carl moved into third with a
.232. Brackney maintained the lead by shooting his third sub-two in a row with a .197, but things were about to change. Ed Adams bounced back into second with a .274, while Larry Leser moved into third with a .268. In the heavy, Tonkawa Oklahoma’s own Mike Cordes’ small group of .294 couldn’t help him gain on Durward Wofford. Wofford’s .318 was good enough to keep him in the lead, followed by Hemmert’s .482, and Greg Smith’s .526. By now, the winds were starting to pick up. In the fourth unlimited match, Brackney lost the first place spot to Adams, after shooting a .672. Adams shot a .254. Larry White, from Cedar Edge, Colorado moved into third place with a .269. In the heavy, the top three remained the same, with Wofford shooting a .256, Hemmert a .290, and Smith a .374. Winding up the morning shoots, Ed Adams challenged Brackney’s small group, but just missed with a .184 to win with a .2598 aggregate. Larry White’s .268 edged out Brackney for second place with a .3022 aggregate. Brackney bounced back with a .388 in the fifth match to take home the third place trophy with a .3232 aggregate. Roger Tillery and Bud Mundy rounded out the top five. In the final 100 yard heavy match, Durward Wofford slammed the door shut on the other competitors by shooting a small group trophy winning .129 and finishing the morning with a .2096 aggregate. Jim Hemmert remained in second place with a .393 and a .3272 aggregate, and Greg Smith’s .383 and .3692 aggregate won him the third place trophy. R.B. Carl and Roy Damron rounded out the top five. By the time the Whittington Center moved the target frames back to 200 yards, the winds had picked up to a sustained 15 miles per hour with gusts estimated at 35. Scores in the afternoon would reflect the challenges the shooters faced, as well as those who were able to over come those challenges and find it within themselves to excel. Todd Tyler started the 10 shot
200 yard unlimited shoot off with a .785, followed by Roger Tillery with a .904 and Larry White’s .994. Those were the only groups under an inch. In the heavy varmint shoot, Roy Damron, from Rifle, Colorado, started with a .687. Cliff Lewis of Amarillo, Texas followed him with a .985 as Tonkawa’s own Mike Cordes found himself in third place with a 1.181. In the second unlimited match, Larry White leap frogged Todd Tyler and Roger Tillery with a .727. Tyler shot a 1.198 and Tillery a 1.720. In the heavy, Roy Damron’s .862 kept him in the lead with Lewis’ .716 right behind him in second. Gerald Adams of Fort Worth, Texas moved into third with a 1.046. In the third unlimited match, White held on to first place shooting a 1.279, while Tillery’s .648, while small group for the match, couldn’t move him to the top spot. Tyler remained in third place with a .2.046. In the heavy, Damron continued to lead the pack. His 1.235 group was the smallest out of the nine shooters. Durward Wofford’s 1.351 jumped him into second place, while Cordes remained in third with a 2.035. The winds finally calmed a little in the fourth match giving the shooters some better conditions to shoot in. In the unlimited, Bob Brackney took home the small group trophy with a .536, but it couldn’t move him into top three. Roger Tillery’s .609 moved him to the head of the pack while Larry White’s 1.051 kept him firmly in place of the second spot. Todd Tyler’s .631 kept him in third place and in position to take the shoot with a solid final match. In the heavy, Durward Wofford’s .569 won him a small group trophy to take home to Melrose, but it couldn’t knock Roy Damron out of the top spot. Damron shot a .682, while Cordes was holding off a late charge from Albuquerque’s Greg Smith for the final spot for a trophy. Cordes shot a .706, while Smith put five within .814 of an inch. When the dust settled (although with the wind, it didn’t really settle) after the fifth and final unlimit-

ed match of the day, ‘Catfish’ Todd Tyler lived up to his nickname, claiming the top spot with a match small group of .689 and an aggregate of .5349. Larry White maintained his second place and took home a trophy with a 1.413 and an aggregate of .5464. Roger Tillery came in third with a 1.739 in the final match, and an aggregate of .5620. Bob Brackney and Ed Adams rounded out the top five. So the 2014 New Mexico State Champion Unlimited shooter is Larry White with a Grand Aggregate of .4243. Roger Tillery took home second place with a .4562, and Bob Brackney came in third with a .4654, Todd Tyler and Ed Adams rounded out the top five. In the heavy, Roy Damron runs wire to wire edging out Wofford with a aggregate of .4530 to .5111. Damron shot a 1.064 to Wofford’s second match small group in a row of .774. Mike Cordes’ .846 bested Smith’s 1.214 for the third place trophy with a aggregate of .6022. In the Heavy Varmint grand aggregate, Wofford takes home the first place trophy with a .3604 to Damron’s .4246. Cordes’ .5183 was good enough for third place. Greg Smith and Jim Hemmert rounded out the top five. Sunday morning was chillier than expected, and when the 200 yard Sporter shoot got underway, the winds were calm. That was clearly evident as Roy Damron, shooting from the furthest west bench, started the morning with an untouchable .142 to take home the small group trophy. Greg Smith continued his hot hand from Saturday. His .428 place him in second with ‘Catfish’ Todd Tyler lurking in third with a .439. Damron wasn’t able to parlay his hot hand, but Smith was. His second match small group of .421 gave him the lead over Keith Cottrell and Michael Strange, who shot .613 and .620 respectively. In the third match Smith continued to lead the pack shooting his second match small group in a row, a .342. Cottrell, who drove from Filmore, California, remained in second place with a .488. Ed Adams moved into third, shooting a .598. After the fourth match, it looked like Cottrell was going to be taking home the trophy for first place, as Smith hiccupped with a 1.169 on his fourth target. Cottrell’s .528 put him in the lead, but ‘Catfish’ was looking more like a bar-
racuda ready to strike. Tyler’s match small group of .424 had him in third place circling for the top spot. “It was my third shot. It just flew out. The wind didn’t change, so it wasn’t a condition, I guess it was something I did.” That was Cottrell explaining the 1.973 inch group on his fifth target, opening the door for Smith, or Tyler, or even Ed Adams to claim the win. In the end, Cottrell dropped to sixth place, while Smith’s .972 couldn’t top the ‘Catfish’. Tyler shot a .669 to snatch the victory away from the group with a .3101 aggregate. Smith brought home the second place trophy with a .3332 aggregate, while Adams’ .3472 gave him the third place trophy. After an early lunch the Whittington Center moved the targets back to 100 yards, some mule deer and a very curious antelope decided they wanted to see what all the commotion was about during the first two matches. Needless to say, they didn’t stay behind the firing line, so the target crew of Aaron Snyder and John Harms had to chase them off a few times. So after the first match of 100 yard sporter was restarted and completed, Roger Tillery took the lead with a .197. Mike Cordes kept his hot hand with a .222, and Bud Mundy was in third place with a .236. The winds picked up again during the second match, but Tillery was able to hold on to the top spot with a .247. Mundy moved up to second with a .212, and Ed Adams’ .173 move him into third place and pushed Cordes into fourth. Keith Cottrell took home the small group trophy with a .131. With the wind now sustained around 15 miles per hour, Adams shot another sub two group with a match small .145 to stay in first place. Mundy remained in second with a .329 and Tillery in third with a .353. The top three positions remained the same after the fourth match as well, with Adams shooting a .279, Mundy a .362, and Tillery a .415. ‘Catfish’ Tyler shot the small group of the fourth match with a .265. Finally, when caller Tony Gallegos called the range closed for the annual Father’s Day shoot, Ed Adams put an exclamation point on the afternoon, shooting a fifth match small group of .199 and a grand aggregate of .2202. Bud Mundy took home second place with a .373 group and
.3024 aggregate, while Keith Cottrell moved into third with a .238 group and a .3124 aggregate. Roger Tillery took fourth and ‘Catfish’ Todd Tyler took fifth. In the Two Gun, Adams took first place with a .3852 grand aggregate, Todd Tyler was right behind Adams with a .4018, and Bob Brackney took home the third place trophy with a .4216. Roger Tillery and Bud Mundy round out the top five. August’s match will include the light and heavy varmint for the Four Gun Championship. 2014 Alpen Cup: Tony Negri Memorial in Dobbiaco, Italy by Americo Angaran
Four sunny days in an unexpected hot June helped to make this shoot very fun and relaxing. There were sixty-six shooters attending, 1,584 targets measured and no claims. The target crew and measurement crew were great! The 2014 Alpen Cup is also the Tony Negri Memorial held in honor of longtime benchrest enthusiast, Tony Negri. Congratulations to the Alpen Cup winners and to newly-elected NBRSA European Regional Director, Jean Marie Deletang, a very nice man, experienced shooter and friend of all of us. The results shown are for NBRSA shooters with their placement in parenthesis and their MOA displayed. This year’s Alpen Cup winner was Alberto Lenzi from Italy with an overall MOA of 0.2604. Sahuaro 1000-yard Benchrest by Karl Hustiger & Dale Arenson The July match had very good conditions. Very light breezes with temperatures only in the 100’s by the end of the match. The Range Master said he would order the same for next month! This was a far better weather match than what we encountered in June (Flag Day), when wind gusts exceeding 30mph were reported. At those wind speeds, shots off paper can occur even in this great crowd. We had a good group again with a new shooter from San Diego. Top honors go to Ross Herrick, (middle photo) who was really on it today, shooting his 30Patriot to win each yardage. Pictured at right is Steve Everson. The next couple of months are guaranteed to be warm and that’s okay with us. Since summer is a time for vacations, we are all hoping that the wind will go on vacation for a while as well. Joe Krupa Wins the Wolverine Challenge by Bill Gammon
WWCCA, Plymouth MI June 7-8, 2014
The weather started off hot on Saturday and an early morning rain on Sunday. Eventually it got nice but the order for the weekend was bug spray. Just to give you a little idea of what Michigan is like, I left the range at 6:30pm and it was 75 degrees. An hour or so later traveling northwest, it dropped to 56. OH WELL! There were 24 brave souls and 10 gallons of bug spray that ventured out that weekend. The highlight was the steak supper put on by WWCCA. The steaks were great and you got to cook your own, plus all the trimmings. Well the Wolverine Challenge started off as a Joey, Jack and Don race as to who was going to be first. Don Rosette started off with 3 small groups in the LV100 with Joey Krupa taking the last group with a beauty .109. Joe won the LV100 stage with Don right there and

Jack Neary in fourth. The HV100 stage was won by Jack Neary, Joe second and Don fifth. Into Sunday the HV200 stage was won by Don Rosette with Jack Neary second & Joe Krupa third. The HV Grand was won by Jack Neary, Joe Krupa second and Don Rosette third. The LV200 stage was won by Lee Hachigian, second was Jack Neary and third was out of retirement, Jim Hutchison. The LV Grand was won by Joe Krupa, with Jim Hutchison second and Jack Neary third. The Two Gun was Joe Krupa, Jack Neary and Don Rosette pictured above. Page 35 has Jim Hutchison and Lee Hachigian too. We hope to see you at the Fall Classic, to be held here on Oct 11-12 and the steak supper will be a highlight again.
