So what, you say. Here’s what. Thanks to PMA Tool, my enthusiasm is renewed. They have done such an outstanding job of designing, and redesigning, an impressive array of loading and cleaning related products.
PMA’s Micro Adjuster by Boyd Allen
Prologue: Back in the day, when I first went to a benchrest match, besides being totally impressed with the accuracy, I was equally taken by all of the finely wrought bits and pieces, Hart rests, fancy powder measures, wind flags, rifles built specifically for benchrest competition, and the sight of virtually every competitor loading right there at the range, between matches. It was truly sensory overload, especially for someone who had only recently graduated from a Lee Loader, powered by a plastic mallet. Sometime after that I saw my first issue of Precision Shooting Magazine, and a Sinclair catalog, both of which had a seemingly unlimited supply of really neat gadgets listed within their covers, lots of things to want, none of which I had. Jump forward a little over three decades, and I now have most of those benchrest toys that I drooled over back in the day; this after having spent some time writing product related articles for Shooters News, a couple for Precision Shooting, and more lately some for what has become accurateshooter.com. My point is that it takes more than run of the mill stuff to get my attention these days. I already have umpteen different powder measures, a similar number of neck turners, two high quality portable reloading presses (and one that is semi-portable)…. and so on, and so on….lots of the bits and pieces that we use to assemble high quality ammunition and shoot it.
The Meat: First, let’s take a look at something that is unique to PMA; their Micro Die Adjuster. Installed on one’s sizing die like a lock ring, it allows the user to easily and conveniently make rapid, precise, repeatable adjustments of his sizing die to a half thousandth of an inch, and even though I am only moderately coordinated, it takes me no more than six or seven seconds to make an adjustment. My days of overshooting the mark on an initial die adjustment are gone forever. All I have to do is unscrew the Micro Adjuster and die assembly about a quarter turn in the press’ threads, loosen the thumbscrew, hold the arm/lower part of the adjuster in place while rotating the die and top half the number of divisions (or fraction thereof) required to achieve the desired change in shoulder bump, retighten the thumbscrew, and retighten the assembly (die and Micro Adjuster) in the press. Gone are the days of guessing how much die rotation is needed to make a .001 change with a 14 pitch thread, or taking the die in and out of the press multiple times as you try different shim pack combinations to work up to the combination that puts you
at your desired initial adjustment, when setting up for a different rifle or barrel. With the Micro Adjuster, you can make series of exact adjustments that will take you to the die setting that produces the shoulder bump that you are looking for, with no risk of accidentally going too far. When you adjust for .001, you get .001. So how does it work? The adjuster is like a lock ring that has two halves, upper and lower, that are connected with a 36 pitch threaded joint. When you unlock the thumb screw, hold the arm that is attached to the lower part, and turn the upper part, you are changing the thickness of the lock ring, moving the bottom of the assembly higher or lower in relation to the die, to which the upper part is connected with a set screw. The reason that you start the adjustment by unscrewing the assembled adjuster and die in the press (about a quarter turn) is to produce some temporary clearance that may be needed to make the adjustment (depending on which way you are going), and of course after the adjustment is made, the assembly needs to be retightened in the press. The other feature that sets this product apart from another that is used in a similar way is that it can be set up on just about any reloading press. It is portable. I can set it up for my Rock-chucker, or either one of my Harrell’s presses (turret or combo). So there you have it. A finely made, affordable ($60) product, that does

exactly what it claims to do. As per the web site, with the thumbscrew upgrade they cost $5 more, $64.95. With an Allen head set screw the cost is $59.95. Now you have a new toy for your toy chest. Afterthought: On the same day that I am writing this, I am working on learning how to do some video and video editing of a piece about this product for accu-
rateshooter.com. After I had taken the time to set up a die and adjuster on my Harrell’s Combo press, it occurred to me that I needed to do some video shots with the adjuster off of the die, and then with the adjuster disassembled. Not wanting to go through the whole die setup again, and despite my inner voice having told me that I shouldn’t, I had already sized all of my fired brass, leaving me nothing to use to set up with, even if I had wanted to, which I didn’t, so I quickly devised a scheme to be able to reproduce the setup, after taking the adjuster off of

the die, a way to get back to where I wanted to be, or at least very close. I noted the number that the adjuster was set to (4 ½), measured the thickness of the adjuster (.487”) to make sure that I would be on the correct rotation, and measured from the bottom of the die to the bottom of the top piece of the adjuster (1.180”). Then I did my disassembly, shot the video, and put it all back together, adjusting it for .003 less bump, to allow for assembly error. Walking it down it down that much a thousandth at a time would be quick, no problem at all. So there you have it. I can do one setup per press/die combination, and reproduce them at will, as long as I don’t lose my notes. (Like that has never happened.)

Short Stories about Benchrest Shooters by Bill Griffith
In the March issue of this magazine the editor invited us to submit “an article of interest.” I thought a series of articles consisting of compilations of short, human-interest stories written by different people about folks they’ve met at matches would be interesting reading, and by keeping the stories short people might be willing to submit stories of their own. I volunteered to get the ball going in that direction--so here goes. As a prelude, I want to give some background. I’ve read many times that benchrest shooters are a great and friendly bunch of people. For the most part, I would agree--if you know them. However, when you’re new to the scene and not likely to be a top-of-the-list shooter it’s easy for the regulars to give you no more than a brief nod of the head or a quick “Hi” as they go about their business. (I guess that’s typical in all group settings.)It’s easy for an outsider to feel like an outsider – and it’s nice when the regulars take time to make a newcomer feel welcome.
Last year, my son attended a registered match (his first); I was excited about him having the opportunity of meeting some of the “names” in the game. He did meet some of them; however, I think he had some of the same feelings described above. The point being, again, it’s nice when the regulars take time to make a newcomer feel welcome. Now, without further ado, I want to share some stories about a few of the folks I’ve met at various benchrest matches. The stories are in somewhat chronological order of when I met the people; there are others that would be included if space permitted. ROGER AVERY Roger is the first shooter I met who is listed on the NBRSA, Hall Of Famepoints list. I met him at Elberton, GA in 2009 when I started shooting benchrest matches. I remember that he won frequently. I started shooting club matches at River Bend (which is about two hours from Elberton) in 2010 and saw some of the Elberton crowd

there, including Roger. I referred to them as the “circuit riders.” In addition to being a good shooter, Roger is quiet. I remember shooting a two-relay club match at Elberton and I was having trouble closing the bolt on my rifle; Roger was standing behind me watching--not saying anything. One of the other shooters told me later that Roger just walked away shaking his head. He may have thought I was beyond help. At the first match my wife attended, Roger was one of the shooters who I sought out for her to meet. Speaking of wives, he is one of those lucky guys whose wife travels with him to some of the matches and she’s also been known to fix some great food for all the shooters. Sometime along the way I learned that Roger made his own bullets. He was probably the first guy I met who did that. He told me that he used to make bullets to sell to other folks, but now he just makes ‘em for himself. In addition to being a bullet maker, he’s done his own stock work and gunsmith work. He’s amazing! Although Roger seems quiet and reserved, at some point he seemed to warm-up. I remember him congratulating me and seeming happy over a good group I had just shot. I remember him seeming happy to see me and engaging in pleasant conversation at the first Super Shoot I attended. I remember him, later, asking what happened since he had not seen me the last two days of the match. Yes, I could feel the warmth. Roger strikes me as someone who can answer most questions a wannabee shooter like me can ask and I’ve gotten comfortable asking him. In fact, I’ve got some questions for him the next time I see him. Roger lives in Elberton and, in a “prior life,” worked at the Richard B. Russell Dam on the Savannah River.

JIM ANDRESS & BILL & SCOTT DITTMAN I met Jim, Bill and Scott at the River Bend monthly club shoots in 2010 and have shot with them numerous times since. Not only are they good shooters, they’re nice guys and good for the game. Let me share some of the things that impress me about them. First, each of them gives generously of their time to run matches every month. Second, each of them is quick to lend a helping hand (and accessory or tool if necessary) to solve someone’s problem. Examples follow: 1. At the first out-of-town match my wife and I attended, I failed to bring her earmuffs. I asked Scott if he had an extra set, and sure enough he did and was more than happy to let her use it; 2. When powder spilled into the action of my rifle, Scott was there before I had time to turn around, with a can of compressed air; 3. When my shooting glasses foggedup while the clock was running dur-
ing a match Scott was quick to offer something he had that might solve the problem; 4. On more than one occasion I’ve gotten a bullet stuck in my rifle barrel and Jim and Bill were quick to fetch a brass rod to drop down the barrel to dislodge the bullet; and 5. When a trigger malfunctions at one of the monthly club matches Jim usually gets right in and fixes the problem. In essence, these guys are quick to help and they have the skill, tools and willingness to help. Yes, they are good for the game. One thing that’s particularly noteworthy about Jim Andress is he did not shoot in the first Super Shoot I attended; however, he was there. Why? He came to help his friend Brady Knight negotiate the rough terrain in a wheelchair, and to show support for his friend Bart Sauter at Bart’s HOF induction ceremony. One thing I admire most about the Dittmans; they have a father-son relationship that is very admirable.

I’ve told Bill several times that I hope he realizes how lucky he is. I think he does. Also, and very important, each of them encourages my son as he “samples” benchrest shooting. Jim is a gunsmith and has his shop at the River Bend Gun Club (where he is also on the staff); in a “prior life” he was a corporate pilot. Bill is like many folks from the North; he came South for college and stayed because of the weather. He is the club manager at River Bend and makes many of the wind flag poles you see at matches. Scott owns a plastic molding and tooling company in the Atlanta area and has a daughter who shot with us at one of the monthly club matches. CONCLUSION In coming months, I hope enough of you will submit stories of your own about some of the folks you’ve met in your benchrest journey so that such stories will become a regular feature of the magazine. I’d enjoy reading each of them.

Arizona Benchrest’s Southwest Regional Championship
The Arizona Benchrest Shooters held the Sporter - Unlimited 5 Shot Southwest Regional Championship on January 3rd and 4th, 2015. This Championship included a Sporter Grand Agg and an Unlimited 5 Shot Grand Agg. These will be combined with the February 7th and 8th, 2015 Light Varmint and Heavy Varmint Southwest Regional Championship results to create a Combined 3 Gun Agg and 4 Gun Agg. Thursday and Friday saw temperatures below 40° F. Wind picked up with 18 mph gusts that ripped apart target frames during Friday’s practice. Luckily, by Saturday the wind had calmed down and we had some great shooting conditions. We had a total of 23 competitors for this match, with several newer shooters. This was Chris Baitx third benchrest match ever, and he shot a
very impressive 0.089” group with a bag gun! Lou Murdica shot some great groups on Saturday, one of which measured at 0.039” and has been submitted as a possible Unlimited 100 yard record. He used the same impressive rail gun that his granddaughter had used during the December match, and this earned him the top place for the 100 yard Unlimited Agg. The Agg measured at 0.1262”, which was small enough to be submitted to the NBRSA for a possible record. Walt Berger shot some impressive Sporter groups, landing him in first place in the 100 yard Sporter Agg. The 200 yard matches on Sunday also had great conditions. The cold finally began to let up, and the temperature raised about 10 degrees to a high of 62° F for the day. Lester Bruno took

the 200 yard Unlimited Agg and Lou Murdica took the 200 yard Sporter Agg. In the end, Lou ended up taking the Unlimited Grand Agg and Sporter Grand Agg with a very impressive lead over the competition in both. Buddy Ross won the small group of the morning with a .070 in the second match and long-time shooter, Johnnie Webb just missed winning small group with his .074 also in the second match. River Bend member Don Greene, shooting in only his second registered match, shot his first official screamer with a .087 in the fifth match. Billy Stevens won the HV100 on Saturday afternoon, but once again, going

Scotty Grimes (.212), Terry Leonard (.235), Keith Hansley (.226) and Jeff Graves (.238). All of these screamers were shot in the first match. Roger Avery shot a .204 in the second match for small group of the event and the aforementioned .228 by Billy Stevens. Bart Sauter won the LV200 on Sunday afternoon and this time, contrary to the previous events, the winner was not in second place going into the fifth match—he was in third place. Billy Stevens was ahead after four matches with a .2502, Tim Singleton (shooting in only his second registered match) was in second with a .2095, and Bart was a “distant” third place with a .2186. Bart’s .268 in the fifth match was enough for him to win the event when Billy and Tim “stumbled” with a .572 and .790 respectively. Tim won small group of the event with a .234 “screamer” in the fourth match; Randy Mitchell’s .244 in the third match was the only screamer shot in that afternoon. As for the Two Gun, you can see the results of the top finishers; however, it’s noteworthy that the above men-

Although some of the regular attendees were absent, we enjoyed seeing Scott Mims back after a long absence and we enjoyed having River Bend member Bryan Griffith, a first time registered match shooter who shot a factory gun. The River Bend Gun Club and Jim Andress were excellent hosts. Thanks to them for making this match available. Thanks also to River Bend members Bill Dittman (range officer) and Jim Andress (scorer and target crew chief) for giving their weekend to helping make the match run smoothly. Special thanks to Bill Griffith for his invaluable assistance with targets and scoring. Very special thanks go to Greg Ellis (chef extraordinaire, who cooked an etouffee with chicken and rice. Charlie and Cheryl Hood (excellent BBQ), Roger and Phyllis Avery (pastries) and River Bend member Bobby Reiber (banana pudding) for providing dinner Saturday evening. River Bend will be hosting another registered match the second weekend of April and we hope you plan to attend. The weather and fellowship will be awesome! McMillan’s EDGE Stock for Benchrest Shooters Form follows function to produce the shape of success
Benchrest competition has long been the laboratory for firearms innovation. Desirable engineering qualities in a benchrest stock include stiffness, low torque, strength, superior handling, and shot-to-shot repeatability -- all within a weight limitation imposed by rules. The McMillan EDGEŽ benchrest stock exemplifies the concept of form following function to produce an innovation that makes a true contribution to the sport. At first glance, the McMillan EDGE looks very different than traditional rifle stocks. The EDGE’s radical forend is engineered like a structural beam for extra stiffness in the vertical axis. Vertical side walls reduce flex 30% in the vertical axis compared to traditional wedge-shaped forends on benchrest stocks. Since a percentage of the weight of the firearm is resting on the front bag via the forearm, reducing flex in this area can lessen the bag bounce that all firearms experience during a shot. The McMillan EDGE stock is designed with an ultra-low center of gravity, placing the bore axis as low as possible to the front bag. This not only helps to minimize vertical elevation forces, but it also reduces side torque forces during a shot. By placing the bore 10% lower than traditional benchrest designs, the EDGE geometry seeks to better align recoil forces directly to the rear, which improves stability and handling. To increase stiffness of the forend,

the barrel channel is molded into the stock. This is an important point. Fiberglass stocks derive most of their structural strength from an outer shell of fiberglass cloth. The fill material within the outer shell contributes to strength, but it is the outer shell that provides a majority of the structural integrity. On most stocks, including traditional benchrest stocks, this outer shell wraps around three sides of the forend, leaving the top open for inletting the barrel channel into the fill material. On the EDGE, the outside structural shell wraps completely around the
stock because the barrel channel is molded into the structural shell. The result is a much stiffer stock that is also lighter than traditional designs. The EDGE barrel channel will accommodate the largest barrel contour that benchrest rules allow. The outer shell on the EDGE LV is 100% graphite. Compared to fiberglass cloth, graphite is stronger, stiffer and lighter. At 22-26 oz., the McMillan Ultralight Benchrest EDGE LV is 1/3 lighter and much stiffer than a traditional benchrest stock. its shell is made from fiberglass cloth and has a minimum weight of about 2.5 lbs. As for the fill material inside the structural shell, the EDGE utilizes a proprietary composition that is lighter, yet stronger than most other stocks. Again, the goal is increased strength with reduced weight. A fill of different formulation is used in the action area where recoil forces impose harsh conditions for strength and rigidity. There is a 1/2″ flat on the buttstock, which is tapered to meet the minimum angle required by both the NBRSA and the IBS. Competitors report that the 1/2" flat improves handling and reduces torque compared to the minimal tracking surface offered by traditional wedge-shaped buttstocks. The buttstock end is finished and does not require a buttplate, saving precious ounces. The EDGE LV and EDGE HV feature an adjustable weight system molded inside the buttstock. The optional adjustable weight system comes with five weights totaling seven ounces. This lets you fine tune weight and balance, but it is not designed for converting from light varmint to heavy varmint. The molded-in buttcap containing the weight tube eliminates the need for a recoil pad. The length of pull is 13 inches. The pistol grip is streamlined based on input from competitive shooters. The goal is to facilitate proper hand positioning while keeping the knuckles clear of the trigger guard during recoil, especially for bag squeezers. This not only improves shooter comfort, but also improves shot-to-shot repeatability. Several versions of McMillan EDGE benchrest stocks are available. The EDGE LV utilizes a graphite shell and the EDGE HV utilizes fiberglass. The EDGE HBR is similar to the EDGE LV but with the forend

narrowed to 2.25" by removing the lower rail from the EDGE stock, leaving a solid platform with 1/2" tall sidewalls. The EDGE HBR .22 Sporter has a 2.25" wide forearm and is designed primarily for Anschutz速 54, 64 and 1700 series rifles. The forearm and bottom of the buttstock have the required slight convex curve underneath per rimfire benchrest rules. Since the EDGE was introduced, it has become one of the most popu-
lar styles on the competitive benchrest circuit and routinely shows up in the winners' equipment list at major national matches. In a sport where the competitors are not only extremely competent marksmen, but also extremely vocal about their likes and dislikes, the EDGE's success is a sign of a product design that has met widespread acceptance in a demanding field.

We had a good turn out with 14 shooters; 12 of those competing in the NBRSA match. As close to perfect weather that can be expected in February, in the northern hemisphere, in the early twenty first century. Temps in the 60's at the 8:00 AM starting time, and warming to 78 degrees by noon, when we were done and putting everything away. Conditions were reasonably mild, light winds and clear skies. Mirage did not really show up to create problems like in the last match. Just enough to reliably show the wind direction. Out of twelve shooters in Light Gun, the top six (on that day) all had subMOA aggregates. Consistent winner Steve Everson had two six inch groups for a 7.94'' aggregate, and he still came in third in group. Bill Warner shot a 3.87'' group and a 7.69'' aggregate. Very nice, but along came Ross Herrick with his Lazzaroni 7.82 (.30 cal) Patriot, and shot a 3.50'' and a 3.43'' group, then a 6.81'', to end up with a 4.58'' aggregate, winning the Light Gun group. (Not to mention Ross shot the highest single target score of 49x and his 3.43'' group was the smallest in Light class and of the match. Ross’ performance reminds me of a quote Ronald Reagan said while debating Jimmy Carter, “There you go again!”
In Light Gun score, Jeff Billotte prevailed with a 138, Steve Everson was second with a 137, and Jeff's brother Mike was right behind with a 136. Close competition! That is part of what makes it fun down here. The other part, of course, is the characters that are doing the shooting, and of course, the character that runs the match every month, making this all possible. That would be Match Director extraodinaire, Karl Hunstiger. Heavy Gun had the top two shooters, out of ten, putting in sub MOA agg's. Pat Billotte, again, one of Jeff's brothers, (I'm not sure how many more brothers Jeff has stashed away that he is going to bring out to beat the rest of us), put in a sub MOA aggregate of 9.17''. But as usual, it was not enough to beat Ross Herrick's 6.73'' agg. (How does he keep doing that?) Ross also had smallest group with a 5.37''. By the way, in case you don't know, in Heavy Gun, that is 30 shots for score. Three targets of ten shots each. Ross shoots one gun, period. His Lazzaroni 7.82 Patriot is light enough to make the 17 pound weight to compete in Light Gun, and he shoots the same gun in Heavy. That's 45 shots for score in each match, not including sighters. Barrel wear builds up quick under those conditions. I suspect he is getting subsidized on his barrels by DARPA, the secret agency of the federal government. But, that is just a rumor you understand...
Either way, you've heard the saying, ''Beware of the man with one rifle, he probably knows how to use it''. If you look that saying up in a dictionary, you will see Ross's picture. In score, Bill Warner, shooting his 6.5284, in the more difficult conditions of relay four, turned in an excellent 2805X to win for Heavy Gun score. Bill also won high score of 96-3X. Steve Everson's 6.5x47 was second with a 272 and Ross was third with a 266-4X. By noon or so, we had everything at the range put away and were on our way to Cindy Lou's for burgers, gyro's and...uh...whatever, where we picked up the usual interrogation of each other, to find out what the winners are doing to clobber the rest of us. Benchrest Funnies: Krupa Asks A Question What is the coldest temperature in which anyone can remember shooting a benchrest match? I saw that there was a benchrest score match at WWCCA last weekend. It was unregistered (and not sure if two guys shooting constitutes a "match"), but supposedly it was -16F at the start. This morning it was -14F when I drove into work. Saw it was -24F at Cadillac, Michigan (actual temperature, not windchill).
Once I shot a score match at WWCCA when it was near zero. I remember getting in my truck and it showed -2. On the way to the range, it went to zero and I remember saying to myself "great, it's starting to warm up". Anyway, what is coldest anyone can remember trying to shoot a match in? At WWCCA, we stand inside the clubhouse and when the Match Director says "commence fire", we run out and shoot five or so shots and run back inside (at least that's what I do). Some guys even load at the range when we hold these Winter matches! I pre-load and hope the tune is somewhere close. Also, I shoot exclusively 133 in these moronic cold shoots, and find that I don't even need to clean the gun between targets. Fifty shots and when I get home and clean the gun there is virtually no fouling. I've shot at St. Louis when the heat index was 105F in the loading barn and shot at WWCCA when it was zero. That's 105 degrees of "separation". Anyway, what is the record anyone can remember?
John from Grand Rapids, MI responds... “Joe, for me it was WWCCA also, but it was not as cold as last weekend. I was shaking so bad I had no idea how much powder was in the case by the time i got the bullet seated. I had to stop checking to see if there was any powder in it because my nose was dripping so bad I would get my powder wet. It would have been a great day to have come preloaded as it definitely would have improved my score.” Glenn Chism from Duncanville, Texas writes that he remembers attending a match at New Braunfels,TX; the Dietz Range, several years ago... “It was during the month of April or May. Everybody and I mean everybody showed up Friday before the match, wearing short sleeve shirts. It was typical Central Texas weather in AprilMay; mid 70’s. Real pleasant. Some of you may remember. We woke up Saturday morning to a surprise cold front. Temperatures had dropped into the mid 30’s. Nobody brought jackets. We shivered through the day on Saturday. Runny noses, numb fingers,watery eyes. Accidently breathe on the ocular lens of your scope and you’d spend most of a seven minute match trying to clear off the condensation. At the end of the day, on Saturday, everybody skipped supper and stampeded to the nearest sporting goods store to find some heavy jackets. The weather forecast predicted the same for the next day (Sunday). To everybody’s dismay, the Sporting goods stores in the area had put away all the winter clothes,in anticipation for warm spring weather. So we were just SOL. Some of the local shooters heard about this misfortune and gathered up all the jackets they could find at home and brought them to the range on Sunday for the Out-Of-Towners. Size didn’t matter. Bill Dorsey is a pretty big guy. I can see Bill now walking around wearing some kids jacket with sleeves extending half way down his fore arm. On Sunday,it never got above 40. Coldest match I’ve ever attended. I keep a jacket behind the seat in my truck just in case.

Benchrest Bio: Gary Ocock Enjoys the Journey by Audrey Brown
Gary Ocock turned down an opportunity to be on WBC-13’s Team USA. He qualified with sufficient points to be one of the top twelve but opted not to attend the St Louis event. He’s a great shooter. He has been for many years. The following is a mini-biography from Gary on his start in benchrest. I hope you like it... How did you become interested in shooting benchrest matches? In 1971, I was stopped at a traffic light on my way to work. On the corner there was a magazine and newspaper stand and the owner had some of the magazines in a movable rack on the sidewalk. While waiting for the light to change green, I looked over and saw a magazine in the rack called Precision Shooting. I turned the corner parked the car and bought the magazine. In it I read about the split of the Eastern shooters from the NBRSA; they were forming a new organization called IBS and if you joined now you would be a charter member; so I joined. It was the end of the shooting season. I read about group shooting did some research, called up Hart Rifle Barrels; spoke with Clyde Hart and ordered a HV .222 rifle. It was a rem 700 with a 12 inch round sleeve in a 3 piece wood walnut stock. I received the rifle in 1972 near the end of the shooting season. There was one more match left at Council Cup run by Clyde's brother Bob Hart so I decide to shoot the match. I preloaded and shot just the HV and
finished 18th. When I got the shoot report I studied the results for hours. I've always been a numbers guy and so I looked at where the top shooters were compared to where I was and day dreamed what I would have had to do to beat them. Well I saw that even at 18th I still beat guys that won at other ranges at other times. I was hooked. That winter I ordered a sporter from Clyde in 6x47 so I could shoot both SP and LV. I got lucky as my sporter shot really well, at that time the 6x47 could be a tricky cartridge to tune. That same winter I ordered a set of bullet making dies from Clarence Detsch. He made them in Boat Tail and from that day on I shot my own bullets in the 6mm in
a BT configuration. Since I didn't like the cold and I was living in Penna. I would make 6mm bullets during the winter for not only myself but I would sell some to other shooters. Doing this allowed me to not only shoot good bullets, but I made some money off the sale of the bullets and this allowed me to buy new benchrest equipment and travel to benchrest matches without taking money out of the family coffers. Since I participated in sports in jr and sr high school as well as a couple of years in college, I had my share of a competitive attitude at the time. I had hunted some as a teenager and when I was in the Marines I helped train 2nd Lt's on the rifle range at Quantico, VA. So by the time I got started in benchrest I had fired thousands of rounds. While at Quantico I was able to discover what made me a better shooter. I discovered that I was recoil sensitive and so I worked at trying to manage this. A consistent hold, good aim and

follow through did it; however it was always a work in progress. Taking up benchrest, I started out shooting the same way; in so doing I learned to shoot benchrest by holding on. I've tried free recoil, but when I make a mistake it's always a doozy. Where do you usually shoot and in what regions? Living in Arizona for the last 27 years, it's mostly at Ben Avery Shooting Facility. We had a range locally that was a very good range to test and fine tune equipment, but it was shut down about 10 years ago so all my practice is at Ben Avery. The BA range has changed over the years as more and higher berms were put in for safety. I've shot all over the US, as for a while when I was working in sales I would schedule sales meetings to coincide with
matches at ranges where I wanted to shoot. It worked out well for 7-8 years as back then it wasn't a pain to travel with guns and shooting equipment. What are your favorite ranges to shoot at and why? I favor lollypop ranges; ranges where if you make a mistake it won't kill the aggregate. Visalia, CA is one of those ranges. Most recently I've gone to Tacoma, WA for their 4th of July Unlimited match. This is another range that doesn't hammer you for a mistake. What equipment do you use, rifles, rests, sandbags, etc? My equipment is basic stuff. I started 40+ years ago and I'm still using much of what I started with. My front rest is a Wichita with no adjustments. My rear bag is a softer heavy sand filled bag
that looks 40+ years old but it's not. Jack Snyder (Edgewood Bags) makes new ones for me as every once in a while I seem to be hard on my bags. I wear them out prematurely. I've changed rifles often. I started building my own 30 years ago; so it easier to switch to the latest and sometimes the greatest. What do you contribute to your longevity in shooting benchrest? First I like to shoot and I like to shoot accurately. Early on I was very competitive and that coupled with the fact I liked shooting was made for competition. I enjoy the aspect of try-

I also enjoy doing things a bit differently than most and benchrest allows me explore this. You never beat the conditions or shoot the perfect group so I always had something to work for. What advice would you give to a new shooter? Practice, Practice, Practice. Learn what your good at; learn what your not. Be honest with yourself and work on your weakness'. You don't have to do it the way Joe Blow does, but if Joe wins a lot, look at what he's doing and adapt to your style. Also it helps
to have a chip on your shoulder. When Joe says he's gonna kick your butt, bear down and use that as motivation to get better. What do you attribute to your success in benchrest shooting? Joe told me he was gonna kick my butt. He did the first year but I got him some time later. Seriously, it's the joy of me beating me and the fact I enjoy the competition and shooting. If you don't have the competitive attitude benchrest will eat you up. There is an awful lot of opportunity for failure in benchrest shooting and little oppor-
tunity for success; unless you put it (benchrest shooting) in its proper perspective. Set realistic goals and have some fun in the process. Two days after the match is over almost no one cares what you did or how you did it, so it's all for you. New 600-Yard World Record
Attention Long Range Shooters. It’s happened again. Bill Bonser has bested the 600-yard world record in Light Gun with a 1.8030” 3-target group aggregate. This agg was set at Ojai Valley Gun Club on January 18, 2015 and supersedes that set by Dick Colyar on April 16, 2012 which was 1.8404”. Congratulations Bill on some fine shooting!
Howard Dietz
Howard Dietz from New Braunfels, Texas passed away in early February. Mr Dietz is a Life member of NBRSA . He and wife, Sammye had run the Dietz Gun Shop & Shooting Range for many years. Our condolences to Sammye and the Dietz family on their loss.
Roger Rose
Roger Rose from Oshkosh, Wisconsin passed away about six months ago according to his wife. Mrs Rose notified the NBRSA office in February of Roger’s passing and said he was a long-time benchrest enthusiast and life member of NBRSA. We extend our condolences to his wife and surviving family on their loss. He will be missed.
Bill Zeik
Life member William D Zeik passed away on February 19, 2014 at the age of 79. Bill was a benchrest shooter from the Eastern region. He and his wife lived in Cheswick, Pennsylvania. Our condolences to Mrs Zeik and the family on their loss.
Clay Martin
With great sadness we learned that Clay Martin passed away at his Waterloo residence on February 16, 2015 at the age of 89 years. Clayton Martin was the loving husband of the late Eleonore Helga Martin (1985). Clayton was an active outdoors man from youth and spent considerable time with his father, brothers and friends; fishing, hunting and camping, especially in the far
north. He shared this love with his own family and they spent much time together in the woods or on a lake. Later in life he pursued his interest in marksmanship as a competitive benchrest shooter and gunsmith. He competed internationally and throughout Ontario and the northeastern US until his 89th year and was still winning. As much as he enjoyed the competition, it was the friendship of his many competitors that he truly appreciated. We offer our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

Wenatchee Benchrest Moves to North Cascades Sportsman’s Club
A great big thank you goes out to NBRSA members Dale Dillingham and Frank Hasecuster for their kind assistance in providing a copy of every issue of the various magazines in which NBRSA matches have been printed. Thanks to their kindness and dedication to benchrest, the NBRSA office now has a full and complete periodical library with matches in print since our organization’s inception. Frank had kept the magazines safe all these years and was in the process of downsizing. This was no easy task as it involved several large boxes full of magazines that needed to be transported from Michigan to Wyoming. Since many issues are very old, it would not have been prudent to mail these, not to mention the expense involved in doing so. Dale contacted the business office and delivered them to the manager during the 2014 Holton Group Nationals. Together, these gentlemen kept the magazines in good condition and ensured their safe passage to their “happy benchrest stomping grounds” here in Sheridan, Wyoming. Thank you Dale & Frank for your kindness and dedication to NBRSA and benchrest.
