It’s Two & Three Guns for Gary & the Four Gun for Larry! Southwest Regional Leg 2: February 7th and 8th, 2015 Phoenix, Arizona Thirty-seven competitors from 6 states (AZ, CA, CO, OR, UT, NV) made it out to the second half of the Southwest Regional at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility in Phoenix, Arizona. Those who attended the 1st half of the Southwest Regional experienced highs in the mid 40s to low 50s with high winds making for an uncomfortable shooter at best. Those who came out for Thursday’s practice for the 2nd half of the Southwest Regional found temperatures in the low 80s with winds calm and steady. Gratefully, it was quite the contrast from the January match. The highs held in the low 80s through the weekend. Winds were present but were typically lower velocity. This is one of the reasons why shooting winter BR in Phoenix is such a pleasure. Saturday, February 7th started with the Light Varmint 100 yard. Teen aggs took the top three places with Gary Ocock leading the way with a .1484 yardage agg. It was great to see Russ Hardy back shooting BR in Phoenix. He was right on Gary’s heals with a .1560. The Heavy Varmints were pulled out for the afternoon shooting. To no one’s surprise there were more teen aggs shot with the HV with the top 8 shooters posting .18 aggs or smaller. This match was particularly interest-

ing due to a photo finish race between the top two shooters. Roy Damron and Gary Ocock went into match 5 with .15 aggs. Gary was slightly ahead of Roy but only slightly. Both shooters had stacked up 4 consecutive .1 groups however, also interesting is the fact that neither shooter posted the small group for any of these matches in spite of all the .1 size groups they were shooting. “Commence fire” was called for match 5. Both shooters showed patience putting their groups together deliberately. Each shooter would post their first .2 group for the day but it was too close to call looking through the spotting scope. In the end Gary shot the bigger group at .221 but Roy’s smaller group at .220 wasn’t enough to pull ahead. In the end Gary took the yardage agg with a .1676. It was a great race to the finish; Roy was right on his heals with a .1696. What an impressive display of shooting by both. On Sunday, February 8th we stayed with the Heavy Varmint for the 200 yard. George Lozano who had finished 3rd in the Heavy Varmint 100 yard came out of the gate with back to back small groups for the match with a .231 and .145 respectively. His third group at .240 was .001 larger than the smallest group in match 3. He finished strong with 2 more ¼ MOA groups finishing with a .1768 yardage agg. It was the only teen agg with second place a distant .2311 away.

Great shooting George! George’s back to back .17 aggs secured his 1st place finish in the Heavy Varmint Grand with a .1775. The Light Varmint guns were pulled out to end the day. Bud Mundy who placed 5th in the Heavy Varmint was the top shooter in the Light Varmint with .2260 yardage agg. In the end, Gary Ocock’s strong 100 yard teen aggs (.1484 and .1676) along with steady 200 yard aggs earned him the title of Southwest Regional 2 Gun Champion. Excellent shooting Gary! This being the 2nd half of the Southwest Regional, these results also allowed us to determine a 3 Gun and 4 Gun Southwest Regional Champions. Given the much colder temperatures of the January it would be interesting to see who could hold out for the top honors. Gary Ocock’s .26 Sporter Grand agg earned him the distinction of being the Southwest Regional 3 Gun Champion. Typically a consistent top finisher, Gary’s dominance would not hold over the entire match. With a .17 Unlimited Grand agg, Larry White took the honor of becoming the Southwest Regional 4 Gun Champion. Congratulations to the winners and to everyone who left the range happy that they were able to enjoy winter BR shooting in Phoenix, AZ. Next up is the Cactus Classic in March. Larry Kuse Memorial Match at St Louis We had some interesting weather for the Larry Kuse Memorial Match held February 28-31, 2015. Twentytwo brave shooters made the trek to St Louis despite a terrible forecast, and we really appreciate their effort. We ended up with about 5" of snow on Saturday, but by Sunday morning the roads were better and Scott did a great job clearing all of the roads back into the club. We had much better weather Sunday with warmer temperatures and light winds. The results follow. Thanks again to everyone that came out to shoot. I know that the weather will be better for our April match. --Joe Fesi Light Varmint 100-Yards Tom Rippee......................0.2506 Wayne Corley.................... 0.2696 Jim Hart.......................... 0.2864 Mark Harpenau.................. 0.2934 Dustin Martin.................... 0.3030 Joe Fesi........................... 0.3040 Dean Ekstrom.................... 0.3076 Lee Gardner..................... 0.3158 Lou Kerhlikar.................... 0.3486 James Carstensen............... 0.3620 Jerry Kloeppel................... 0.3626 Brett Stroud...................... 0.3670 Steve Turner..................... 0.3740 Brad Hawkey..................... 0.3770 Ron Hoehn........................ 0.3856 Scott Pieper...................... 0.3900 Cecil Peterson................... 0.3908 Dennis Boyet..................... 0.3950 Greg King......................... 0.4180 Jerry King, Jr.................... 0.4364 John Magoulias.................. 0.4818 Dean Stroud...................... 0.4960 Light Varmint 200-Yards Cecil Peterson..................0.2823 Joe Fesi........................... 0.2947 Dean Ekstrom.................... 0.3095 Ron Hoehn........................ 0.3189 Dustin Martin.................... 0.3250 Jim Hart.......................... 0.3344 Greg King......................... 0.3450 Steve Turner..................... 0.3618 Jerry King, Jr.................... 0.3649 Mark Harpenau.................. 0.3787 Tom Rippee...................... 0.3788 Lou Kerhlikar.................... 0.4236 James Carstensen............... 0.4327

2015 Cactus Classic at Ben Avery Range This was an especially exciting match for the new crew of Arizona Bench Rest Shooters as they held a range dedication ceremony for Berger Bullets founder, Walt Berger, to celebrate his years of hard word and effort in furthering bench rest shooting. This dedication was complete with a color guard, the national anthem played by Dr Jesse McGuire, fireworks and a four plane fly-over. Practice started off well during the beginning of the week. The weather and winds were kind and the mood was calm and happy. Thursday and Friday brought some harsh bursts of wind, ripping apart practice targets and blowing over wind flags. Luckily, by the first day of the match the wind had calmed back down to typical Ben Avery conditions. Friday night shooters enjoyed a free banquet dinner complete with a prize table with some very generous gifts donated by our sponsors. In total, we had over $20,000 in donations thanks to their support! There were 111 competitors from 16 states and Canada for this match. During the HV100, Jim Folwell shot an impressive .046 small group. There were some great groups throughout the match, however, Gary Ocock shot

steady all weekend to bring home the title of Cactus Classic Two-Gun Champion with a Grand Aggregate of 0.2382. Shooters and staff all worked together to create a match with a fun and inviting atmosphere. It was great to hear that Floyd Joss was able to mark shooting the Cactus Classic off his bucket list this year. It is always a pleasure to welcome new shooters as well as reunite with old friends and enjoy a fun weekend of shooting. Pictures and videos of the match and dedication ceremony will be posted soon on the Berger Bullets Youtube and Flickr pages. All shooters that attended can expect to receive a dvd containing pictures and videos as well as the results, equipment list and a sponsor list. AZBR will also send out checks and bullet certificates to match winners. Thank you to everyone who came this year. The AZBR team was thrilled to have everyone attend and cannot wait until they get to see you again at the 2016 Cactus Classic. *Pictured above are the Two-Gun Top 10 with Gary Ocock center. Precision Rifleman

Mini Biography: Walt Berger Just as was published last month in April’s issue of Precision Rifleman, the same questions Gary Ocock addressed were asked of Walt Berger. He was kind enough to answer back last year and this appears to be the perfect time to publish Walt’s biography, given the recent Cactus Classic and dedication. How did you become interested in shooting benchrest matches?

My brother and two cousins had built a small range to tune our varmint/hunting rifles and this was in the late 1940’s. Not long after we built it the range, someone mentioned there was a bench rest club at Minerva which was only about 50 or 60 miles from us and there was a match the following week end, so myself and a class mate by the name of Don Snyder decide we would drive down and see what was going on. One of the first things we noticed is that this is an OLD MAN’S sport as most of the competitors were much older than we were. They were a friendly bunch and showed us their rifles and by today’s standards they were little more than a HV rifle that weighed more as the stock was wider and the barrels were 1.250 OD. The interesting thing was the premier rifle was a Taylor and Robbins rifle and the barrel was bedded. We told them we had a little range and they said if you make a moving backer some of them would come and shoot with us. We had no cover over the benches or electricity. My brother devised a moving backer consisting of a wire above and below the recorded target holding a strip of paper pulled by a battery operated rotisserie motor. This was a very efficient system as it not only traveled horizontally it would bounce up and down. This range is now the Chippewa Rifle Club and

this is how I became interested in bench rest and I have not regretted a moment of it. Where do you usually shoot and in what regions?

I started shooting matches in the early fifties and my shooting was confined to Minerva and Chippewa the first few years. I currently shoot from the Southwest to the Eastern region and the clubs are Visalia, Phoenix, Raton, St Louis, Chippewa, Kelby’s and wherever the group national match is held. What is your favorite range to shoot and why?

I do not have a favorite range. Since I live in Phoenix most of my shooting is done in what I call desert locations. I do enjoy going to ranges that hasve grass. One of the things that makes a favorite range are the people I meet and the manner in which the match is conducted. What equipment do you use, rifles,

rests, sandbags, etc? Who builds your rifles?

Back through the years I guess I have used about all of the popular barrels, rests, sand bags, and other accessory’s that has been available. I am currently shooting Marsh actions, Krieger barrels, Bruno/McMillan stock, Nightforce scopes, gunsmithed by Gary Ocock and some chambered by myself. What do you contribute to your longevity in shooting benchrest?

It is not about winning, as I shot very poorly the first ten plus years. If winning was the motivating factor I would have quit during this time period. I think some of it is the individuals that participate in benchrest. Where else can you go and leave thousands of dollars worth of equipment lying around and not worry about someone picking it up or have your equipment malfunction and have five competitors wanting to loan you their equipment so you can beat them? This says a lot to me and I enjoy

being around these type of individuals. What advice would you give a new shooter?

This is very hard to answer as it is likely everyone is doing it for a different reason. If you enjoy competing against a bunch of very competitive individuals of high integrity, hang around as you have found them. We do not make it easy for a new competitor to win. What do you attribute to your success?

Not being smart enough to know when to quit. --Walt Berger Pictured above is Rick Duncan, 2014 Long Range Benchrest Grand Champion with his trophy. Rick also won HG Score & TwoGun Score Championhips. The Long Range Nationals are scheduled in June at Colorado. Who will win this trophy next?

Keeping it in the Family at RVSSA March 22, 2015 Rogue Valley Shooting Sports Assn White City, Oregon Twelve contestants readied themselves for the second match of the season at RVSSA and as the results show, it turned out to be a family event with Canada Cummins trading off wins in Light Gun with her father, Bill Johnston at the Heavy Gun. When the smoke cleared and the Two Guns were tabulated, it was dad who came in first. Congratulations to this dynamic duo on a job well done! March Madness Score Match at St Louis Bill Haynes wins VFS & Clark Greene Wins Hunter by Wayne Corley

March 15, 2015 We had a nice day for a match; especially after the snow we had two weeks prior. The wind started in the morning from the left and was moderate and readable but as the day progressed so did the wind. At 200 yards most competitors said they were holding just outside of the outer red ring at 200 yards. We had 16 competitors and several traveled a long distance to attend and we truly do appreciate it. In the VFS class at 100 yards the winner was Ron Hoehn, Galen DeRouse Bill Haynes in first through third respectively. At 200 yards Bill Haynes was the winner, Jeff Conover took second and Ron Hoehn in third. In the Grand Agg the winner was Bill Haynes with Ron Hoehn second and Tom Rippee third. In the Hunter class the 100 yard winner was Clark Greene with Paul

Hon in second and Joe Hemkens in third place. At 200 yards the winner was Clark Greene with Joe Hemkens again in second and Matthew Hon in third. The Grand Agg winner was Clark Greene with Joe Hemkens next and Matthew Hon in third. Results are below. Sloughhouse March Group Match Results

Sloughhouse Benchrest Shooters Sacramento Valley Shooting Facility March 7-8, 2015 This was our first match of the year and the weather was very nice; cold in the morning around 50F with a high of 70F. Wind and mirage were huge factors in the afternoon shooting sessions. There were sixteen shooters competing and we had two visiting shooters on the way to the cactus from Washington state: Mark Walker & Douglas Schwind. We also had a first-time shooter Carson Dugal. We shot all 200 yards on Saturday and all 100 yards on Sunday. It turned out to be a weekend of close finishes with the top three in the Two Gun 68-thousandths apart and all yardages were won and lost on the last group; either by small group to move up or a large group by the leader after four matches. Everyone had a great weekend. Visalia Sportsman’s Cactus Warm Up February 21-22, 2015 Visalia, California Dale Wimp Range For the first match of the 2015 benchrest season there were 28 shooters attending. Temperatures were at a high of 55F both days and Sunday had rain with a low of 47F. Thank you to our Tacoma Washington visitors who dropped by to visit and shoot our match as they were making their way to Phoenix Arizona to compete at the Cactus Classic. We appreciate your visiting our range. This match turned out to be a Ocock steamroller from the LV 100 all the way through to the Two Gun. The only two shooters who distinguished themselves by winning a yardage during this match were Dennis Thornbury, who won the LV 200 with a .1935 and Lou Murdica who won the HV 200 with a .2072. Small Groups winning was shared by a different shooter each yardage, with Gary Ocock taking the LV 100 with a .126 followed by John Verhagen in the LV 200 with a .182. In the HV 100 it was Mel Iwatsubo’s turn with a .120 and along with the HV200 yardage, Lou Murdica added the small group win with a .289. Congratulations to Gary on his Cactus Warm-Up win. It looks like he’s been practicing quite a lot! Thank you to everyone who helped make this a great match and a special thank you to President Dennis Thornbury (pictured) for keeping the range alive and well with benchrest for over 40 years. He and the crew run things so smoothly you never have to worry about a thing... except “the steamroller” that is. --Dan Lutke & Bill Mellor Light Varmint 100-Yards Gary Ocock......................0.1914 Tom Libby........................ 0.2164 Walt Berger...................... 0.2246 Lou Murdica...................... 0.2316 Dennis Thornbury............... 0.2436 Larry White...................... 0.2488 John Verhagen................... 0.2592 Gabe Ledesma................... 0.2618 Bill Mellor........................ 0.2620 Mel Iwatsubo..................... 0.2694 Don Forbes....................... 0.2698 Duke Rovarino................... 0.2838

February 22, 2015

The first match of the new year brought out 16 competitors. SWLA lucked out with the weather--the match was held between two fronts. We had 5 to 10 mph crosswinds but no rain. New shooter was Larry Deese from Huntsville, Texas. He came out 5th in the Grand and will be a tough competitor. 100-Yards Larry Tilley..................... 250-22X Kenny Kuperman............... 250-20X Bobby Ayo....................... 250-20X Larry Deese..................... 250-18X Dale Metzger.................... 250-18X 200-Yards Gardner Rose...................249-9X Dale Metzger..................... 249-7X Clayton Gray..................... 249-7X Ray Perry......................... 249-4X Kenny Kuperman............... 248-11X Grand Aggregate Dale Metzger................... 499-23X Kenny Kuperman............... 498-31X Gardner Rose .................. 498-24X Michael Louwein............... 498-23X Larry Deese..................... 498-22X

Tri-Cities MSA Hunter Match by Rick DeGroat

March 28, 2015 Only six shooters were brave enough to show up for our first Hunter class match of the season. The weather showed up with GUSTO with 20-30 mph winds and gusts of blowing dirt that were much higher than that and if that wasn’t bad enough I made it out to the range with no cookies to go with our coffee that we couldn’t make because the tarp that we used for a wind break blew down and we couldn’t keep the propane burner going to make the coffee. The cookies probably would have blown away anyway. There always has to be one of those guys show up that figures the conditions out and makes everyone else

look bad and today that guy was Glenn Sampson shooting a fantastic 100 yard score of 250-16X when the rest of us worked hard for much worse scores. Triggers were filling up with blowing dust and targets were left bare while others’ guns broke down altogether. Despite all the chaos the wind brought our way, Paul Gylling managed to eek out a win at 200 yards, which cleared the way for him to win the grand aggregate with a 481-7X. Congratulations to Paul on winning this match and we’re hoping next month’s VFS will have more shooters and less wind!

Ambushed by the Billotte Gang! Sahuaro 1000-Yard Benchrest Competition

March 14, 2015 Three Points Range Tucson, Arizona They are a rough looking bunch, even without their horses, Stetsons and spurs. They weren’t even wearing side arms, but they ambushed us anyway. I’m talking about the Billotte Gang. The three brothers who might remind you of the Youngers, or the James Gang, only these guys can probably shoot better. I knew it was going to be a rough day when I was setting my equipment on the bench for relay one and the wind kept blowing things off onto the ground. Not important stuff like the rifle or rests, but smaller, lighter things like ammo boxes or cleaning supplies. For the first sighter period, I made a guess at the wind and dialed in six

minutes of right wind. My first shot proved that was not enough and I had to crank in two more to get on target. The Weather Channel app on my phone said the wind was expected to be 15 to 20, but we were all convinced it was from 50 to 100, because of the way the shooting line in Tucson is perched up on a hilltop. There is nothing to slow down the wind sweeping in from across the desert. I was squatted with the Billotte Gang for relays one and two so of course, I had to keep a wary eye on those Hombres at all times. Eventually the gun smoke cleared and all of the yelling (and complaining) quieted down and Match Director Karl Hunstiger had the stat’s ready for us. Surprisingly in spite of the wind, in light gun, five shooters out of nine turned in sub MOA aggregates.

by Dale Arenson

Some nice small groups were shot by Lon Persun with a 7.68, Ross Herrick, a 6.93, Jeff Billotte, (the Gang’s shifty eyed leader) shot a 7.75” and a 6.0”. Pat Billotte had a 5.5”, Dale Arenson a 5.0”. But the Gang’s head gunslinger on this day was Mike Billotte who shot all sub MOA groups and had the smallest group of 4.68’’ to win light gun aggregate with a 7.22’’. In light gun score, Mike only dropped 7 points to win with a 143-2x, and, he shot the highest single target score of 49x. I think he must have been waiting for the wind to stop before he shot each target. In heavy gun, again the Gang came riding in, with Pat Billotte taking the aggregate with a 10.02’’. Yes, the winds continued to get worse as the gun battle, er, uh, I mean the match went on. Pat also had smallest group in heavy, a 9.56’’. Normally not that great, but no small feat in that wind. In heavy score Dale Arenson won with a 272-5x. I guess it paid off to keep an eye on those Outlaws. Much to everyone’s surprise, when the wind was at its worst, Ross Herrick came galloping in to shoot the highest single target in heavy gun, a 95x. Proving that even a bad wind can’t keep a good man down. I have to mention the excellent shooting by Kim Krueger, (since I was pulling his target and got to witness it). Kim was shooting a 6mm Creedmoor, and

while the groups were not stellar, he managed to keep his groups centered, shooting the highest score of the late relay four, in the worst winds. Proving that even a little bullet will do the job in the wind, IF you know how to use it. Before we left, Jim Schmidt of Arizona Ammunition stopped by, as he usually does. He brought his lovely wife Nancy, who was showing off a new product of theirs, jewelled ear protectors. Even though I am familiar with Jewell triggers, I had no experience with jewelled ear protectors. It was only after modeling them for the ‘’Winners Photo’’ that she informed me that they are for the ladies. NOW SHE TELLS ME! Damn! Anyway, we are all looking forward to next month. As for me, I am off to the Post Office to see if there are any wanted posters on the Billotte Gang. There may be a reward...
