New Mexico State Championship

June 20-21, 2015 Halfway through the season here in Raton, as shooters get ready for the Nationals, competitors are making adjustments to have everything in alignment for the big shoot. Adjustments are made and recorded. What worked at one range may not work at the next. “Anyone can shoot one little group.” We’ve all heard this time and time again. But the fact of the matter is anyone CAN shoot one little group. How many of us can do it consistently? The first half of the New Mexico State Championship was held over Father’s Day weekend at the NRA Whittington Center in Raton, New Mexico. Shooters vied for the first two guns of Unlimited and Sporter to be eligible for the Four Gun Championship in August. For the competitors who didn’t shoot Unlimited, the New Mexico Rio Grande Bench Rest club holds a separate Heavy Varmint match. Fourteen competitors shot the Unlimited class, while nine shot the Heavy Varmint. Larry White, out of Cedaredge, Colorado set the bar with a 10 shot .119 during the first match. No one came close and White took home the trophy for small group. White continued his hot hand with

a .204 in the second match, followed closely by Ed Adams of Albuquerque, and William ‘Doc’ Marsh out of Cave Creek, Arizona. Adams took the lead after the third with a .205 to White’s .262, and he would not relinquish that lead. Adams finished with a .214 and .197 in the last two matches to finish with a .1956 aggregate. White took second with a .2216, and Todd Tyler out of Rio Rancho, NM finished third with a .2458. Meanwhile, in the Heavy Varmint, it was a race for second place as The Man from Rifle, Colorado, Roy Damron dominated the HV100. All five of Damron’s groups were also the match small group: .219, .142, .191, .189, and .314 gave Damron a .2110 agg and first place trophy. RB ‘Doc’ Carl from Edmond, Oklahoma finished second with a .2978 and new shooter Gary Murray may have caught the bench rest bug with his third place trophy and .3084 agg. Damron, 79, and Carl, 85, are showing us how generational this sport truly is. Instead of lugging a rail gun around for two days, unlimited is shot all on Saturday while sporter is shot all on Sunday. So after the target frames were moved back to 200 yards, the shooters picked up where they left off. Tyler (.661), Adams (.665) and Larry Baggett from Amarillo, TX (.670) were within nine one-thousands of each other after the first

match. Winds began to pick up a little and after the second match, Rodney Brown, from Sheridan WY leapfrogged to the top of the leaderboard with White in second and Baggett in third. Brown and White remained in first and second after the third match, with Ed Maxwell out of Phoenix, AZ moving into third place. In the fourth, White took the lead, while Adams’ two sub four groups in the third and fourth match (.392, .389) moved him back into second place. Tyler moved into third. In the fifth and final match of the day, Dan Sutton, out of Glendale, AZ took the small group trophy home with a .374. That moved him to fourth place overall for the 200 yard match with a .4143.Tyler’s .3884 was edged out by Maxwell’s .3883 for second, with White taking the first place trophy with a .3638. In the Unlimited Grand aggregate, White edges out Adams .2927 to .3052. Tyler finished third with a .3171. In the HV200, Damron wasn’t quite so dominant, as he only lead for the last four matches. He was second in the first match with a .526 as Murray’s .473 bested him. And to put an exclamation point on his day, Damron finished the HV200 with a small group of .394 taking home another trophy for small group of the match. Obviously with two first place wins,

September, 2015 Precision Rifleman

Damron took first in the Heavy Varmint Grand with a .2607 aggregate. Murray finished second with a .3308, and ‘Doc’ Carl came in third with a .3667. On Sunday, ideal conditions opened the morning Sporter 200 with minimal wind and all 22 competitors ready to go. Walt Berger, from Phoenix, Arizona showed the young guys the way with a match small group of .334. Randy Pumphrey, out of Lubbock, Texas was second, and Rodney Brown was third. After the second match, Larry Baggett took over the lead, followed by Todd Tyler and Dan Sutton. Greg Smith, out of Albuquerque had small group at .264. Baggett and Tyler flipped spots after the third match, with Ed Adams in third. Smith had his second small group in a row at .279. Baggett and Tyler traded first place again, as Baggett’s .287 moved him into the lead when Tyler shot a .395. Dan Sutton moved to third place and won a small group trophy with a small .238. Some switchy winds kicked up in the final match of the morning, and with his .507, Tyler wrestled first place from Baggett with a .2135 to .2273 aggregate. Adams’ .2604 edged out Sutton’s .2613 for third place. Sutton finished fourth and Rodney Brown fifth. While the shooters took an early lunch, Whittington crews moved the target frames back to 100 yards for the final shoot of the weekend: the Sporter 100. John Grantham, out of Ulysses, Kansas started things off with a bang with a first match small group of .145. Ed Adams (.168), Todd Tyler (.172), Jim Hemmert (.181), and Greg Smith (.198), all had sub .200 scores on their first target. Adams followed up with a .245 to take first place after the second match. Adams put some distance between him and the pack after the third match with a small group trophy winning .117. Tyler was in second and Gerald Adams, out of Fort Worth, Texas was in third. After the fourth match, it was clearly a race for second, as Ed Adams shot a .183, which was just a touch larger

than Larry Baggett’s small group of .181. Tyler held onto second, as Roy Damron moved to third. When the range was called cold, Ed Adams finished with a .1800 aggregate for first place. Roy Damron’s .2232 gave him a second place finish, and Greg Smith took home the third place trophy with .2496. Larry Baggett fourth, and Jim Hemmert fifth. For the Sporter Grand Aggregate, Ed Adams took first with a .2202. Larry Baggett edged out Todd Tyler for second with a .2420 to Tyler’s .2447. Jim Hemmert came in fourth and Larry White fifth. In the end, the New Mexico State Champion for the Sporter/Unlimited Two Gun, was Ed Adams with a .2627 aggregate. Todd Tyler .2809, Larry White .2875, Dan Sutton .3437 and Larry Baggett .3439 rounded out the top five. The Rattlesnake will be the second half of the New Mexico State Championship. --Mark Motsko In the photo from left: Gary Murray, Greg Smith, Ed Adams, Larry Baggett, Larry White (kneeling), Roy Damron, Jim Hemmert, RB Carl and Penny. Tri Cities Benchrest Hunter Match May 30, 2015 Only five shooters came out for our May hunter class match. The temperature was in the mid 90’s, a gentle breeze of 10-20 mph switching from the northwest to the southwest and of course, the mirage that the desert in Southwest Washington likes to generate kept us on our toes. Shooting hunter class in the Northwest just isn’t easy. We’ve also included the VFS results from our April 25 match. --Rick DeGroat

Larry Boers Wins Manley Oakley Trophy The 2015 Manley Oakley Memorial 2-Gun was held on May 2nd and 3rd at the Tacoma Rifle & Revolver Club in Tacoma, WA. Morning temperatures were around 45 degrees, warming to the upper 60’s in the afternoon. Skies were partly cloudy and the winds were gusty and switching, with occasional lulls. Though the wind speeds were not excessively high, course conditions were tough. Mirage also played a part during the afternoon matches. Many of the 16 shooters reported having a rough go of it. In fact, on Saturday afternoon there were 14 groups, shot at 200 yards, which exceeded 1”. We started on Saturday morning with the Sporter 100. A number of shooters began well but Allen Condiff shot best in match 1. Jim Lynn (formerly Jim Silverton) demonstrated his skill by taking the lead in match 2 and holding it through match 3. Then in match 4 your humble writer (Dan Kjelland) found

himself at the top of the pole and, having the good fortune to not hurt himself in the 5th match, won with a .2378 agg. Eric Stanton (.2542) came in second and Larry Boers (.2724) took third. The small group of .138” was performed by Jeff Lewis. In the afternoon’s Sporter 200, as conditions worsened, it was Eric Stanton who stood out in match 1. Match 2 resulted in a tie between Jeff Lewis and Steve Kostanich. Steve broke that tie in the third match and kept his lead through the fifth to win with a .2787 agg. Jeff Lewis (.2988) held onto second and Larry Boers (.3243) finished third. Larry also claimed the small group of .394”. After a day of difficulties the Sporter Grand Agg was totaled up and Steve Kostanich took the honors, winning with a .2776. Jeff Lewis (.2968) earned second and Larry Boers (.2983) came in third. On Sunday the number of shooters dropped to 13. Mike Zdilar started the HV 200 off with a fine group in the first match. Mark Walker was best af-

ter match 2, but then Larry Boers took over in the third and never looked back, winning with a fine .2189 agg. Mustafa Bilal (.2992) was good for second and Dan Kjelland (.3071) picked up third. The owner of the small group was John Parrish at .287”. After lunch, in the HV 100, it was Mike Zdilar again shooting small in the first match. Larry Boers unseated him in the second, but Mustafa Bilal took over in the third and kept the pressure on to win with a solid .1896 agg. Larry Boers (.2476) settled for second and George MacDonald (.2580) rounded out the top three. The .138” small group also ended up in Mustafa‘s possession. With the day’s matches completed, Larry Boers emerged as the winner of the HV Grand Agg with a .2332. Mustafa Bilal (.2444) captured second and George MacDonald (.3013) shot his way to third. When the weekend’s shooting was over, and all the smoke had cleared, it was no surprise to see Larry Boers winning the 2015 Manley Oakley 2-Gun

September, 2015 Precision Rifleman Trophy, with his .2658 agg. Mustafa Bilal (.2902) received second place and Larry Muller (.3134) achieved third. This is Larry’s Boers second win in as many months, making him the one to watch as the season progresses. Thanks to all who made it to this month’s event and entered their names on the clubhouse wall. No matter where you place, you will always enjoy a weekend of shooting with these sportsmen. Thanks to Karen Silverton, who has taken over as Range Officer this year, Zach Silverton on Target Detail, and Statistician and Official Scorer Craig Kensler. Without your efforts there is no competition. --Dan Kjelland Sporter 100-yards Dan Kjelland....................0.2378 Eric Stanton...................... 0.2542 Larry Boers....................... 0.2724 Mark Walker...................... 0.2744 Steve Kostanich................. 0.2766 Larry Muller...................... 0.2820 Mustafa Bilal..................... 0.2940 Jeff Lewis........................ 0.2948 Allen Condiff..................... 0.3122 Jim Lynn.......................... 0.3224 Mike Zdilar....................... 0.3436 Paul Steinman................... 0.3700 George MacDonald.............. 0.3700 Matt Spradlin.................... 0.3716 Bob Boldman..................... 0.3794 John Parrish...................... 0.4402 Small Group Jeff Lewis......................... 0.124 Sporter 200-Yards Steve Kostanich................0.2787 Jeff Lewis........................ 0.2988 Larry Boers....................... 0.3243 George MacDonald.............. 0.3443 Mike Zdilar....................... 0.3444 Larry Muller...................... 0.3501 Eric Stanton...................... 0.3642 Mustafa Bilal..................... 0.3780 Mark Walker...................... 0.4004 Allen Condiff..................... 0.4415 John Parrish...................... 0.4425 Daniel Kjelland.................. 0.4546 Jim Lynn.......................... 0.4674 Matt Spradlin.................... 0.5157 Paul Steinman................... 0.5588 Bob Boldman..................... 0.5822 Small Group Larry Boers........................ 0.394 Sporter Grand Steve Kostanich................0.2776 Jeff Lewis........................ 0.2968

Bukys Wins the Super Shoot Warm Up: Chippewa Rifle Club May 16-17, 2015

Well folks, he did it again. The guy from Texas, Gene Bukys, won it again. You can’t say “he’s got the place figured out” because he’s shot bigger and he’s shot smaller, and the shooting conditions have run the gamut of hot, cold, windy, and fairly calm, to rainy and windy. An informal bounty was issued for Gene on the Benchrest Central Forum. If anyone could beat Bukys at Chippewa they would shoot for free. Just by the fact that Bukys won, he got his entry fee back. Being that he is such a gentleman, he donated it back to the club with half of it going to the target crew. Congratulations Gene. Conditions on Saturday were sunny and warm with a little rain in the afternoon. Sunday was just a warm and sunny Ohio spring day. This year it was definitely a warm up for the Super Shoot. That’s not to say everyone else rolled over and died as can be seen in the results. Saturday ended With Gene taking a quick lead in the LV100 with 0.2044 and John Petteruti taking first in the HV100. Sunday dawned and nice conditions were waiting for everyone. Pat Metcalf announced “Commence Fire” and the shoot was on. Ted Heindselman shot a beautiful 0.1629 for

the HV200 win and Mark Engle shot a nice 0.1844 for the LV200 lead. Ted Heindselman ended up winning the HV Grand with a tidy 0.1939 and there again was Mr Bukys with the LV Grand win of 0.2135. And of course, this brings us to the Two Gun results with Gene Bukys’ winning score of 0.2171. Funny, all of the above shooters have been in these positions at Chippewa in the past. This year there were 29 shooters turn out both days for the match with many different countries represented: South Africa, Canada, Australia, Austria and USA. I would like to thank all of the shooters and the volunteers that put on the match. I hope everyone enjoyed themselves. We also thank all the shooters for supporting our match and we enjoyed having you compete at our range. We cordially invite you all back next year. See you then. --Bob Denk, Chippewa Rifle Club

Shelby County Deer Hunters Assn June 27 – 28,2015 Shelby County Deer Hunters again sponsored the Briar Hail Memorial

Shoot. Twenty-four shooters reported in and the competition was on... As is usual, the weather did not cooperate much. Friday night rain gave the range over 2” to deal with. Saturday was pretty much a constant rain. Weather forecasts predicted wind in excess of 20 mph with gusts to as much as 40 mph. Thankfully, the shooters did not face anything like that until late afternoon. It was just a wet day with constantly changing winds around 10–12 mph. Although a lot of weather comments were made, the shooters bore down and competition was tough. Saturday morning LV100 was won by Jerry Jarrett shooting a .2256. Paul Whitt came in second at .2338. The third place honors went to Tim Humphreys at .2470. Small group was a .088 shot by John Petteruti. After a lunch break, the HV100 ended with Tim Humphreys winning with a .2406 . Second was DeWayne Wood with a .2482 and coming in third with a .2578 was Dominic Grunas. Small group honors was taken by Tim Humphreys with a .121. Sunday broke bright and sunny. Everyone was glad to see the sun out

for a change. Winds were running from 15–20 mph in all sorts of directions, but mostly from the northeast. The HV200 was won by Ted Heinselman who shot a .2597 followed by Tim Humphreys with a .3011. Third place was captured by Jack Neary firing a .3113. Small Group went to Bob Snyder with a .259. The LV200 began as a horse race between several shooters for the winning honor. In the end, however, Ted Heinselman took first place firing a .2557. Placing second was Steve Theye shooting a .2559. Carl Thompson rounded out the field with a third place finish at .2854. Small group honors went to John Petteruti with a .250. When all was tallied, the results were as listed below. It seemed that a good time was had by all. We at Shelby County are looking forward to seeing these and others come for the Eastern Region Fall Finale which will be held on October 17th and 18th. Until then shoot them small. Mike Bigelow Wins Boone Valley Ikes Score Match May 16-17, 2015

Nine hunter shooters came to compete on Saturday and conditions were tough at 100 yards. Mike Bigelow eked out a first place win with Richard Hunnewell in second and Wade Hunnewell holding third. As we moved out to the 200 yard line, things didn’t get any

better, but Wade Hunnewell hung in there for the win with second going to Randy Robinett and James Lederer in third. With the numbers tallied, Wade Hunnewell won the Hunter Grand with Mike Bigelow second and James Lederer in third. In VFS we had five shooters competing on Saturday with Terry Meyer winning and Paul Whitmore in second with Russ Stiner in third. At 200 yards, Russ Stiner won the yardage with Terry Meyer in second and Paul Whitmore in third. Going for the VFS Grand was Russ Stiner for the win with Terry Meyer holding second and Paul Whitmore in third place. Sunday we started the second half of the Two Gun with the VFS100 yard competition and Mike Bigelow took first place honors with Dean Walther in second and Russ Stiner holding third. At 200 Russ Stiner jumped to first with Craig Nagel in second and Dean Walther in third. VFS Grand for day 2 was in the same order; Russ, Craig and Dean. Mike Bigelow won first in the Two Gun with Craig Nagel in second and James

Lederer in third. All the results are published below. Take a look and find you favorite score shooter. A BIG Thanks to all who came to support our match. 2015 Alpen Cup Results Dobbiaco, Italy June 4-7, 2015

Dobbiaco in the Dolomiti region of Italy, close by the Austrian border, can lay claim to be the most picturesque of European ranges. We shoot at 1250 meters (4100ft) against a majestic panorama of mountains (see http://www.eurobenchrestnews.com) in a pristine environment of meadows and forests. The range is undergoing major work to be eligible for holding world class matches: the benches have Name Light Varmint: Andreas Miterer Michael Hucke Philippe Octo Dario Dell'Aglio Ernst Joelli Luciano Bonacina Andy Atzl De Villa Jean Claude Eymieu Gianmarco Farinone Heavy Varmint: Martinelli Alessandro Lenzi Alberto Artaud Louis Martini Roberta Quaglino Gianantonio Da Pian Giorgio De Villa Davide Camilli Edoardo Atzl Andy Gerstenberger Regina

been raised by 3m (almost 10ft) and now number 25. The 100m is now mildly uphill but the 200m line is so far up that it takes a bit of fiddling with the front rest and rear bag position to be on target. There is still some landscaping to be done but it is heartening to see so much effort, both in terms of financing and actual work, put into our discipline. Sixty shooters from 9 countries gathered for a 4 day event with 4 ladies among them. We were blessed with sunshine and very high temperatures during the day, an occa-

sional downpour late afternoon as is to be expected in mountains. Reloading is scattered among a tent, several wooden huts and a concrete building. Catering is provided by a local hotel. Our UK competitor, Tom Morris, is to be commended: it takes him 4 days to come all the way from northern Scotland and 4 days to travel back! But this is an occasion to mix with friends as this is the most attended match in Europe and just being there, breathing clean air, enjoying a beer by the lake, makes it worthwhile. The match was created by Toni Negri who had been the range president for 30 years until he passed away in 2012. The 1999 World BR Championship was held there. His son took up the challenge and with the help of a few dedicated young Italian shooters, chosen by Toni, perpetuates the tradition with energy and dedication. He stands on the far left of the 2 Gun winners picture.

The match is run very professionally and so smoothly that by midafternoon, every day, with 4 relays, we are free to relax. This is also an opportunity to check each other’s equipment, trade information and enjoy the Wailing Wall comments: “Look at that one! If the bxxxxy 4th (or 5th) one hadn’t pulled away, it would surely count as the small group!” Ring a bell? Or: “I saw the wind picking up, I aimed off, and it printed right where I had held it!” We’re all looking forward to the 2016 match. --Philippe Octo

We had a very small crowd for this match but very competitive shooters. The winnings were spread around pretty well. Every yardage had a different winner. Mike Bigelow was the only multi-winner. Don Hanson won his first VFS Grand. The new format of shooting both classes at 100 yards on Saturday and both 200 yardages on Sunday worked out well. --Ron Shultz Hunter 100-Yards Mike Bigelow................... 250-14X Mike McFarland.................. 250-5X Jason Stanley................... 249-12X Mike Toby........................ 246-10X Tim Henderson................. 245-11X Ron Shultz....................... 243-10X Terry Nunnemaker.............. 242-6X Ronnie Berg...................... 240-3X Hunter 200-Yards Ron Shultz.......................248-1X

Joe Hynes is Michigan State Champion

by Nancy Scarbrough had not changed much. The sun was June 6-7, 2015

This was our last match of the season and what a great Saturday morning we had. Thirty-eight shooters came to vie for the Michigan state Championship. Temperatures were in the 70’s, sunny with winds at 10-15 mph, couldn't ask for a better weekend. Starting us out in the LV100 was Greg Reed with an outstanding agg of .1842. Bob Balowski took second and John Petteruti came in third. Small group went to Ted Heindselman with a .108. In the afternoon we held the HV100 and winner Kevin Hovis shot a nice teen agg of .1990. Peter Smith placed second and Joe Hynes was third. Small group honors went to Kevin Hovis with a tiny .092. Moving on to Sunday the conditions

still shinning and the wind was still making the tails move on the flags. HV200 was the first yardage of the morning and Bob Scarbrough, Jr took the win with an agg of .1861. Second place was Joe Hynes and Peter Smith held third. Joe also shot the small group of .293. In the afternoon the winds picked up slightly making it more difficult for the contenders to shoot small groups, but that didn't stop Joe Hynes. In the LV200 Joe Hynes stole the win with a .3566 agg. Dale Dillingham came in second and Pat Canning placed third in this yardage. Lowell Hottenstein shot the small group of .513. The Light Varmint Grand winners were Joe Hynes, followed by Bob

Balowski taking second and Pat Canning in third. In the Heavy Varmint Grand, once again Joe Hynes took the lead with a .2259 agg, followed by Peter Smith in second and Bob Scarbrough Jr taking third. When the final tally was made, it was no surprise that Joe Hynes walked away with the Two-Gun with a .2754 agg followed by Bob Scarbrough Jr in second and Peter Smith placing third. That was some GREAT consistent shooting guys! On behalf of the Holton Gun Club, range master, scoring officials and target crew, we would like to thank you for coming and supporting our club and we hope you enjoyed the matches. See you again next year. Light Varmint 100-Yards Greg Reed.......................0.1842

NTSA’s Gulf Coast Regional Leg 1

There were only six brave shooters who took on this Denton match on May 30-31, 2015. Other ranges in this area of Texas have been flooded and this most likely impacted attendance. Nearby range, Grand Prairie Pistol and Rifle Ranges are closed; both totally under water. Here is that range’s Official Statement: "With the additional rain, the rifle and pistol ranges are now fully under water. The river level is currently at 28 feet and must drop to 12-15 feet before the ranges will start to drain. This is not forecast to happen for at least a week. It will then be a while until the ranges drain enough to open. Our apologies for the inconvenience but there is not anything that could be done to prevent this." The Grand Prairie Range is 60 miles South of Denton. All this rain is very unusual for this part of Texas. It hasn't rained like this since the 1920"s. With that said, Gary Bristow led off the LV100 and also shot the small group. Scott Hunter took his turn at both in LV200. Gary ended up with the LV Grand win with a 0.2452.

Along came Tommy Long and won the Sporter 100 and Ron Sewell shot the small group. Then it was Dickie Pustejovsky’s turn to win the Sporter 200 and Gary Bristow came in with the small group. Gary ended up claiming the win in Sporter Grand and also the Two Gun, making him the GCR Champion for this first leg. The second and final leg of the Gulf Coast Regionals is held July 11-12 at Seymour Stool Shooters, where the Unlimited and Heavy Varmint classes will be contested. Hopefully there will be no more flooding. Stay tuned! --Glenn Chism

help. From helping me get it out to cleaning it and then offering their backup rifle or spare trigger-all while they needed to be loading and cleaning for the next relay. They even came back over later to check in to make sure things were still working. You guys are something else. Thanks to the crew for another well run match and congratulations to Wayne, the Tennessee State Champion.

Desert Sportsman’s Silver State Shootout

June 6, 2015 Sunny skies and lower 90's temps was the norm for the Silver State Shootout VFS match in Las Vegas. Shooters at 100 yards were so close in scores that four of them had to depend on Creedmoor rules to determine their final position. This is what we call "stiff competition" which really adds another layer to the excitement. After lunch we moved out to 200 yards where the shooting and the wind got quite interesting. We had so many wind flag reversals during each match that a few shooters became quite humbled compared to their 100 yard performance. I want to thank Bob Rousseau and Tony Debacco for a superlative job changing targets. And also to all the shooters who showed up to compete and support VFS benchrest here in Las Vegas. Congratulations to Howard Bloom for his 100 yard win and Sheldon Turf for winning both the 200 yard

match and the 100-200 Grand Aggregate. Good Shooting! June 14, 2015 What a great day for shooting. No wind and no mirage to start with; but now that I think of it, any day is a great for shooting. With the second yardage the wind kicked up as well as the mirage, so we had to fight the elements. Sheldon was the man to beat, but nobody came close. Congratulations to Ron Orton for being the Las Vegas state cowboy champion, which has nothing to do with Hunter but nice to be recognized. Nice shooting everyone. Thank you to the helpful guys for changing targets. by Howard Bloom Hunter 100-Yards Sheldon Turf .................. 249-10X Howard Bloom.................. 245-11X Ron Orton....................... 243-10X Pete Savage...................... 240-4X Hunter 200-Yards Sheldon Turf....................246-5X Ron Orton........................ 238-1X Pete Savage...................... 237-3X Howard Bloom................... 235-2X Hunter Grand Sheldo Turf..................... 495-15X Ron Orton....................... 481-11X Howard Bloom.................. 480-15X Pete Savage...................... 477-7X
