Tim Naugle Makes Top Gun Look So Easy! 2015 Short-Range Score Nationals Webster City, Iowa

2015 Short-Range Score Nationals August 4-7, 2015 Boone Valley Ikes Range Under nearly perfect conditions, Boone Valley hosted the 2015 NBRSA Short Range Score Nationals; both Hunter and VFS were contested and the second Two Gun Score Champion was anointed. Despite recent heavy precipitation, the grounds were in excellent condition (thanks to our hard working club members and Board, Head honcho, Mike Bigelow conspired with the weather bureau and ordered a full week of exceptionally pleasant weather featuring only night showers and zephyrs. Some shooters were able to capitalize while others wondered, what happened. The “Ikes gremlins” are ever present. At the BVI range, perfect scores are a rare com-

modity; especially for 200 yard and Grand Agg scores. More on that later. Competitors began arriving and the grounds were buzzing, as people form all across the USA shared the last years experiences. Only two years removed from a near all-time low, it was pleasing to see a strong recovery in Hunter participation: the 55 competitors represented about a 61% gain over the 2013 NBRSA Hunter Nationals attendance. Just as rewarding, was the notable increase in VFS with 62 individuals (a 12% increase over last year). These shooters brawled for the VFS Championship, while all but three Hunter shooters stayed for the VFS competition, making 46 individuals eligible for the coveted Two Gun. The format was a revisitation of the traditional NBRSA Hunter Nationals: one gun, one yardage per day. On Day

one, we contested the Hunter 100. Day two Hunter 200 and at the conclusion we had the door-prize drawing and Awards ceremony. On day three we contested the VFS100, followed by the VFS200 and then awarded the VFS and Two Gun trophies, along with patches, medallions, etc. We were very grateful for the generosity of our sponsors who made the prize drawing a BIG success! Most notably, NightForce Optics donated a 1555x56 Competition Scope garnered by Jason Dill. Defiance Machine, the action of choice (Paul Whitmore), BAT Machine provided $800 toward an action (Weldon Yoder) and a Custom Damascus blade knife, donated by Red Rock Tool. A complete list of sponsors is included on page 11. The Hunter 100 was a full-blown brawl. Going into match 5, at least 5 individuals remained in contention for the crown. Following a respectable 250-16X, Jack Foster rode up to the hitchin’ post, dismounted, and sauntered into the saloon to celebrate his hard earned status: Hunter 100-yard National Champion! Following on Jack’s heels was Bill Small, while Joe Hemkens and Jason Stanley tied over third. Tim Naugle, Dean Thomas, and TK Nollan debated the merits of 13xes and Craig Nagel avoided being the lowest 250, by garnering 12x, to Marty Steffan’s 11! That was it: 9 250-?X 100 yard scores set the stage for Wednesdays 200. Promptly at 9AM, the competitors were ready for the Hunter 200. It promised to be yet another light, but vexing Iowa day. The warm-up match appeared easy. The BVI grem-

other National Championship victory for Mr. Naugle. It’s shaping up to be a very good year for Mr.Tim! Soon it was 9AM Friday and time for the VFS 200. The BVI gremlins sallied about the range, wafting great shooting conditions in all directions. This was going to be a trigger-pull! After 15 seasons at BVI, 250 scores at 200-yards can be counted using both hands...and now, two toes! Leading the pack was local, new kid on the block, National Champion, Russ Stiner, who builds his own rifles. Russ’ 250-7X bested Mike Bigelow’s ditto (7X), Mr. Stiner posted 3x during match one (tiebreaker), while Mike drilled a single dot. And that was it for 250, 200 yard scoring! Jason Stanley (249-9X) had a firm grip on third place, while Wade Hunnewell, Randy Perkowski,Terry Meyer, and Steve Rosendale, all posting 249-8X, sorted out the placements from 4th through 7th. Bill Small took a more civilized approach, and claimed 8th, via the sole 249-7X. Then, arguing over the color of beer, or something close to it, Gary Evans, Greg Swezey, and Chad Schmidt, all scored 248-6X and settled into their respective slots: 9th; 10th; 11th. VFS 200-Yd National Champion, Russ Stiner, take a bow! Adhering to the, “unwritten rule”, via his 200-yd victory, Russ Stiner, 500-24X, laid claim to the title of VfS National Champion! Congratulations, Mr. Stiner! Only a pair of Xes behind, with an exceptional 500-22X tally, Mike Bigelow placed second and Randy Perkowski, 499-27X, was third. High X-

lins had a different perspective. After three matches, only Chad Schmidt remained, “clean”. Chad managed to drop only one point during match four and another in match five. His 2483x provided a 1 point margin of victory and the Hunter 200-Yard National Championship! Hot on Mr. Schmidt’s trail, Tim Naugle posted a 247-7X for second place, while Jack Foster, Dean Thomas, and James Lederer, respectively, 7, 5,& 3X sorted out the top five. Once tallied, the point total proved the value of points vs. Xes: Tim Naugle, via 497-20X, earned yet another Hunter Grand Aggregate National Championship! The Bob Pease Trophy was awarded to the top five-man team, at 100 Yards: This was claimed by, “The Wyoming, Montana & Washington Misfits”, comprised of Jack Foster, Tim Naugle, Greg Swezey, Bill and Sam Small with a combined score of 1244-64X. The Family Feud Trophy: best two person (family) team Grand Aggregate was gleaned by the father and son duo, Bill and Sam Small with 984-33X. And thus, concluded the 2015 NBRSA Hunter Championships. The competitors didn’t waste any opportunity to score at the VFS 100. Note that the top ten placements were represented by all four relays, and all sections of the range. Tim Naugle, via the best match one score, wrested the 100 Yard Championship from Sam Langhofer. They each tallied 250-21X. Of the 62 competitors, 37 (59%) posted 250 scores. Amid that, it was an-

count. Places 4th through tenth were filled via more 499 totals: Wade Hunnewell, 25X; Terry Meyer, 23X; Steve Rosendale, 23X; Jason Stanley, 22X; Chad Schmidt, 22X; Bill Small, 21X; Ron Powell, 18X. Two Gun National Champion, Chad Schmidt, posted a convincing two point win. His 996-33X paved the way for a satisfying victory. Congratulations, Chad! And so the 2015 Short Range Score Nationals concluded on a successful note. Behind the scenes, the work was conducted by a crew who kept the pace steady. A single bobble (a 100 Yd target hung during the 200 Yards) made life exciting for Jason Dill, but was nicely handled by Chad Schmidt’s excellent refereeing team! Mary Berg scored while husband Ronnie was range officer for the Hunter event. Ron Shultz performed RO duties for the VFS. Larry Caston served as statistician, while Rhonda Schmidt mobilized the target detail; comprised of Dee K, Holden Hammen, and Tom Wardell. We especially thank David Halblom, for acquiring and engraving the crystal club trophies. Very nice trophies indeed! Finally, our thanks to all who attended. Your patronage and sportsmanship were appreciated! Keep em on the X! --Randy Robinett Photo credit to Jim Dowling, David Halblom and Jason Stanley. Thank you. Bud Mundy Wins LV, Richard Brensing HV & James Carstensen UNL

July 11-12, 2015 We had three classes over the weekend; Light Varmint, Unlimited 5-Shot or Heavy Varmint. There were 22 shooters contending at this match. The weather was good with fair skies and southwest wind at 10-12 mph. Temps were in the mid-nineties.

Bud Mundy won the LV100 with the only teen aggregate for the weekend; a .1942. Jon Leu, Eddy Collins, Bob Hammack and Don Creach were the top five placements. The small group was shot by Richard Brensing with .156. Richard Brensing won the HV100 with .2138. Tony Levenson, Jon Leu, Ron Miller and Merlin Hubbard were the top five finishers. Tony Levenson won the small group with a .116. Jim Carstensen won the UNL100 with

a .2002 aggregate with Don Creach, Greg King, Keith Christensen and Eddie Collins placing second through fifth respectively. Keith Christensen had the small group with a .144. Keith went on to win the UNL200 with a .2426 and shot the small group of .236. Jim Carstensen, Greg King, Eddie Collins and Bud Mundy rounded out the top five. Precision Rifleman

The Vineyard Oak Hill Gun Club July 19, 2015

Raisins and grapes never had it so bad. Raisins were shot at 100 yards and grapes were shot at 200 yards. One successful shot would entitle you to a $1.00 prize and bragging rights. Those that did not get shot (the extras) were divided between the riflemen for personal consumption. If wine really relaxes one, then the pre-fermented products took the edge off the shooters and great re-competition relaxation. It was a diversion that kept us from getting uptight before shooting our matches of Heavy Varmint and Unlimited during this July 19 match. It was an unusual, but fun match. Following the raisin contest, we began with a hot, humid, sultry day. This did not bother sharpshooters Jerry Wick, Brian Volkers, Dean Ekstrom, Larry Rickertson or Jerry King. Small Group of 0.084 was evidence the competition level was increasing. Two hundred hard competition followed the grape shoot. Masters of this venue were Dean Ekstrom, Frank Taucher, Larry Richertson, Joe Morgan and Jerry Wick. Small group of 0.263 just missed creamer criteria. The weather had changed with a wind picking up and swirling challenging the shooters. Heavy Varmint grand aggregate winners were Dean Ekstrom, Jer-

ry Wick, Larry Rickertson, Frank Taucher and Brian Volkers. The statistics follow for your review. Concurrently we were shooting Unlimited class. The ranking after 100 yards was Jim Carstensen, Harry Rowold, Cecil Peterson, Keith Christianson and Ethan Carstensen. Two hundred yard placements were Jim Carstensen, Keith Christianson, Cecil Peterson, Harry Rowold and Ethan Carstensen. Unlimited Grand ranking was Jim Carstensen, Cecil Peterson, Keith Christianson, Harry Rowold and Ethan Carstensen. The results are here for your review. Many thanks to the target crew, statistician, Jim and Jerry for their range officer duties and general help. --Cecil Peterson Heavy Varmint 100-Yards Jerry Wick.......................0.2050 Brian Volkers..................... 0.2110 Dean Ekstrom.................... 0.2150 Larry Rickertson................. 0.2578 Jerry King........................ 0.2618 Jim Schmidt...................... 0.2718 Joe Morgan....................... 0.2738 Carl Dillon........................ 0.2922 Frank Taucher................... 0.3044 Robert Jacobs................... 0.3272 Bob Cotton....................... 0.3564 Wes Johnson..................... 0.3692 Jim Franzen...................... 0.4528 Small Group Dean Ekstrom..................... 0.084

Larry White Wins Northern Colorado

Sporter/Heavy Two Gun

June 13-14, 2015 Howdy all! Wile E Coyote reporting from Northern Colorado Benchrest Shooters. Our second match of the year was held June 13-14 with 19 shooters contending. We also welcomed Tim Hu at his first benchrest match. Tim is a long-time friend of Rod Brown’s and we were glad to have him share in the fun. Although I am reporting, I was unable to attend this match due to a serious case of fever, cold, and sickness. So this will be a bare bones report. This little coyote hid at home in bed while all the others went out to have fun shooting the Sporter leg of the 4-Gun. Our top winners are as follows: Sporter 100 was won by John Reiss with a score of 0.2334; Small group was 0.0900 by Tom Evans. Sporter 200 winner was John Reiss again, with a score of 0.2633; Small group was 0.2820 by Phillip Sheldon. Heavy Varmint 100 was won by Larry White with an aggregate of 0.1768; Small group was 0.1170 by Larry White as well. Heavy Varmint 200 was won by Larry White again with an agg of 0.2186; Small group was 0.1920

by (you guessed it) Larry White. The Sporter Grand first place was claimed by John Reiss with a score of 0.2484. The Heavy Varmint Grand Agg winner was Larry White with a score of 0.1977. For the combined 2-day Agg win, Larry White cleaned house with a score of 0.2455. Great shooting Larry! As always, none of this could happen without the shooters who come to play and the top notch staff, match director and target crew. We hope you come to join us at any of our matches. --LuAnn Dill Sporter 100-Yards John Reiss.......................0.2334 Roger Tillery..................... 0.2364 Larry White...................... 0.2368 Irv Sheldon....................... 0.2522 Rodney Brown................... 0.2622 Jack Duncan..................... 0.2668 Bob Martinez..................... 0.2722 Tom Evans........................ 0.2742 Michael Beard................... 0.2752 Al Johnson....................... 0.2870 Justin Young..................... 0.2882 Phillip Sheldon................... 0.2886 Cliff McNairy..................... 0.2912 Bud Schalles..................... 0.2940 Dean Thomas .................... 0.3016 Dennis Prendergast............. 0.3240 Tim Hu............................ 0.3618 Barry Benson..................... 0.4176

Larry White Wins Again at No Colorado’s Unlimited Match

Howdy all! Wile E Coyote reporting from Northern Colorado Benchrest Shooters. Our third match of the year was held July 11-12. Gorgeous weather for shooting graced 17 shooters who came out for Unlimited 10 and 5 Shot matches. This match is the Unlimited leg of the Northern Colorado Four Gun. Varmint shooters lined up at the benches, rifles and rail guns at the ready. Everyone was eager to get started on the 100 yard Unlimited 10-Shot target. Larry White was repeating his last performance and scored an Agg of 0.1912. He also took the Small Group with a beautiful group of 0.1490. Great shooting Larry! After target frames were moved to 200 yards and everyone loaded another mass of shells we headed to the benches again. Larry White once again took the first place position with a score of 0.2178 and the Small Group, which was our only Screamer for this 200yards,

of 0.2330. What a group Larry-and with 10 shots, this little coyote is in awe! The 100/200 Grand Agg for the day went to Larry too with his awesome score of 0.2045. This is one good shooter folks! Sunday’s 200 yards Unlimited 5-Shot match was again dominated by Larry who shot a beautiful score of 0.1536. Larry was smoking hot and impossible to touch this weekend. He claimed a Screamer and Small Group for the match of 0.1360. Cliff McNairy was getting serious with a small Screamer Group of 0.2320 as well as Dave Gibson (aka Super Dave) with his Screamer Group of 0.1900. Wow guys! After a quick lunch break to move the targets and settle down from the excitement of the morning and tiny groups flying left and right, we went to the line. Irv Sheldon took the lead in this 100 yard match with his tiny agg of 0.2022 and Dave Tunbridge claimed the Small Group (which was a Screamer too) with a 0.0950. Really smart shooting guys! The 100/200 yard win for the

day went to Irv Sheldon with his combined Agg of 0.2006. Beautiful shooting Irv! As always none of this could happen without the shooters who come to play and the top notch staff, match director and target crew. We hope you come to join us at any of our matches and don’t forget about our Annual Firewalker! --LuAnn Dill

Good Bullets, Good Barrel Oak Hill Gun Club August 16, 2015

Is that all there is to winning at benchrest matches? Is it that simple to be a repeat winner? Is there something secret that we aren’t privy to? Is there not some practice involved? Some planning? Is there some lucky charms in his packets, ie: rabbit foot or an acorn? Is that

all there is to this game? Well at Oak Hill Gun Club on August 16, we had a shooter earn the top prize for the third time this year. Everyone wanted to know his secret to success. His answer must be good bullets and a good barrel. Some of us are getting suspicious that those good bullets and barrel also have a very good driver. The 100 yard competition re-

vealed the top five were Jerry Wick, Dean Ekstrom, Jerry King, Paul Whitmore and Carl Dillon. Small group honors went to Dean Ekstrom with 0.142. The 200 yard venue honors went to Jerry Wick, Frank Taucher, Carl Dillon, Jim Carstensen, Cecil Peterson and Jim Schmidt. Small group honors went to Jerry Wick with 0.287.

The Light Varmint Grand standings at the end of the day were Jerry Wick, Frank Taucher, Carl Dillon, Dean Ekstrom, Jerry King and Jim Schmidt. Congratulations are in order for a good driver; Jerry Wick! We welcomed two new shooters at our range. A junior shooter, Dustin Godman who shot a true 6PPC benchrest gun and finished great for his first match. Brian Whitmore traveled more than 3 hours to shoot with us and shot a factory savage for his first match. We hope both continue shooting with us. It was great having both gentlemen at our match. Both were blessed to have their fathers also in attendance and shooting alongside them. Thank you to Marvin for handling the targets and backers and David for scoring. Also Jim and Jerry for running the match and their help organizing the shoot. --Cecil Peterson Light Varmint 100-Yards Jerry Wick.......................0.2426 Dean Ekstrom.................... 0.2564 Jerry King........................ 0.2568 Paul Whitmore................... 0.2602 Carl Dillon........................ 0.2672 Frank Taucher................... 0.2712 Joe Morgan....................... 0.2846 Jim Schmidt...................... 0.2926 JJ Coe............................. 0.3104 Robert Jacobs................... 0.3174 Cecil Peterson................... 0.3336 Dustin Godman.................. 0.3414 Larry Caston..................... 0.3426 Jim Carstensen.................. 0.3454 Louis Kerhlikar................... 0.4244 Keith Christianson.............. 0.4250 Bob Cotton....................... 0.4578 Wes Johnson..................... 0.5854 Brian Whitmore................. 0.6442 Mike Godman.................... 0.6724 Small Group Dean Ekstrom..................... 0.142 Light Varmint 200-Yards Jerry Wick.......................0.2691 Frank Taucher................... 0.2858 Carl Dillon........................ 0.2988 Jim Carstensen.................. 0.3070 Cecil Peterson................... 0.3112 Jim Schmidt...................... 0.3294

Sahuaro Long Range Benchrest Thunder Under Clear Skies by Dale Arenson

After gently inserting the big .50 BMG cartridge into the open breach, I slowly closed the bolt, feeling that satisfying slight pressure of the perfectly sized case seating firmly into the chamber. Making one last adjustment to the rear rest for windage, I centered the 1/4 MOA dot into the middle of the X-Ring of the target 1,000 yards away, I reached into the trigger guard, careful to keep my thumb down, away from the back of the action and away from the bolt handle, I touched the trigger, which is adjusted to about a 6 ounce pull. The thirty two and a half pound gun slammed back against my shoulder, causing me to temporarily lose my sight picture as my body was driven back about a foot. Sliding the gun back forward in the rests against the stop, I quickly opened the bolt, withdrew the empty case (this action has no ejectors) and inserted another round into the chamber. Repeating this whole process, I put five rounds down range as quickly as possible, I was so focused, it was only after my last shot

did I realize that the blast from the muzzle brake had cleared off everything on my bench, including my chilled vodka martini and my plate of melba toast and caviar. We are not entirely without class down here in the southern desert you know! Okay, I was just kidding about the Martini, we certainly would not be drinking while shooting. And caviar doesn't exactly go with soda pop. But yes, I was shooting a .50 BMG at the NBRSA match in Tucson, not for competition of course, since as most readers will know, NBRSA limits calibers to .40. However, Match Director Karl Hunstiger, being a long time .50 shooter himself, will allow the big guns at the match so that we can practice, or work on load development at long range. It is the only place in Arizona where we can shoot at 1,000 yards and have someone pull your target. The group that I shot, by the way, measured 4 5/8''. But now down to the brass tacks of this article, we are here of course to shoot an NBRSA match with the regular crowd of intrepid, eagle eyed,

long range shooters. I also shot Light and Heavy Gun that day and, as usual, was trounced by Ross Herrick and the Billotte Gang. Not that it was all bad, I managed to shoot the smallest group and the highest light gun score of the match. A 3.87'' group that was also a 50 score, But my 6.54'' aggregate was not enough to beat Jeff Billotte, who snuck up on me with a 6.40'' agg, (he was very consistent with 5, 6 and 7 inch groups), and his 141 score flattened my 138. The top four shooters in light gun all had sub-MOA agg's. After drawing the bad wind card, Ross still shot a 4.0'' group, with a 6.71'' aggregate, while Steve Everson Had a 7.06''. Conditions were about average for the Tucson Three Points Range, clear skies with temps in the 80's to begin with, they rose to about 102 by the time we were done shooting. Winds were not terrible and not great, although they predictably picked up toward the end of the match. Heavy gun had Pat Billotte taking aggregate group with a 10.13'', also shooting smallest group in heavy with a 6.12''. But it was Ross Herrick

with his Lazzaroni 7.82 (.30 cal) Patriot, who beat the afternoon winds to win for heavy gun score with a 271-4X, also posting the highest single target score of 94-3X. With eight shooters and 13 guns, it was a typically small match with plenty of room for more shooters to show up and join in the fun. You can bring whatever you have, 6BR's are not uncommon and they can do surprisingly well at the longer ranges. Occasionally, in spite of the clear skies, there will be nearby thunder if someone brings a .50 BMG. Mark your calendar, the second Saturday of every month. Even if someone brings caviar, dress is still casual, but a smile is required. In the photo from Left: Pat Billotte, Dale Arenson, Jeff Billotte and Ross Herrick. Plaques are for first place. Shooting in the Twilight Zone by Dale Arenson

August 8, 2015 You could feel the humidity pressing in on you with the 100 plus degree temperatures. It seemed more like I was on a safari in the Ituri rain forest at the base of Mt. Mbiya in the Congo, rather than in the Arizona desert. The only thing missing were crocodiles lurking in the river. But then, there was no river here, just the 1,000 yard rifle range of the Three Points Shooting Range of Tucson, Arizona. The moisture from the yearly monsoon season was really making its presence known. The night before, in the city of Tucson, the skies were lighting up and booming as if we were in Baghdad on the night of the beginning of Desert Storm when the Iraqi military was welcoming the U.S. Air Force with an unforgettable light show. No... I wasn't there. At least I don't think I was. But today we had fairly good conditions, to start with anyway. We considered ourselves lucky to not have the pounding thunder storms

while we were shooting the match. The targets tend to get very soggy when that happens. It was an average sized match with nine shooters and sixteen guns. Plenty of room for more if you think you're up to it…or, as Rod Sterling would say, ''If you care to venture into the unknown". As we have seen all too often, the conditions deteriorated as the day went on. It doesn't always work out that way though; you just never know. Today, the lucky shooters who drew the early relays did okay, except of course for Ross Herrick who was his usual stellar self. We started out with fairly mild winds and the usual mirage was not too bad, just enough to verify what the wind flags were telling you. But on relay one, light gun, during the second string we all got hit with a gust of wind that none of us noticed (or maybe it was a gamma ray burst), and strangely four out of five of us all had 10'' groups, the other one was a 14''. Otherwise, all five shooters in

relay one had sub-MOA groups in their first and third strings. Ross shot a 3.75'' group right off the bat. (We hate it when he does that). Lon Persun shot a nice 7.5'' and a 6.18''. Wayne McDonald had a 7.0'' and a 6.5'', Dale Arenson's first and third groups were 8.5'' and 8.6'', while perennial top shooter Steve Everson put in a 9.12” and a 9.5''. Maybe if we could only do the best two out of three... Ross prevailed in group with a 6.9'' aggregate and Dale Arenson took top score with a 138. High single target score went to Wayne McDonald with a 48-1x and Ross's 3.75'' group was the smallest group in light gun. Even with the gamma ray burst, I mean the sudden wind for the second string, the top five shooters in light gun all had subMOA aggregates. Conditions started to go south during the second relay when the morning guys were doing heavy gun. Even so, Ross scored a respectable 10.9'' aggregate to win (again) for heavy group, although Dale Arenson was able to sneak up on him to get the small group trophy with a 6.9''. Along with of Ross's 7.7'' group, those were the only sub-MOA groups in heavy gun all day. Ross turned in a respectable 277-4x score to win that category. He was way ahead of everyone else. Way to go Ross. Even though Rod Serling was nowhere to be seen, it started getting weird during the third relay. The humidity had arrived big time and the wind kept coming and going, blowing hard, then nothing. Okay, I admit it, in the win-

22

Precision Rifleman

ter time we like to brag about the nice weather here in Arizona, but August is definitely not the time for that. Normally a long range shooter does not want to see a lot of wind, but Jeff Billotte, shooting relays three and four, said it was so hot and clammy that he liked it when the wind would come up, anything to cool off! The strange thing was, with the prevailing seven o'clock wind, when it would start blowing, the flags on the left side of the range would be standing out straight, while the flags on the right side of the range would be hanging limp. Where the heck was that wind going? Nobody could tell, so you just had to make your best guess. To make matters worse, the slow mirage was bending the light, seeming to move the targets around, so that no matter where you thought you were when you sighted in, the target would not be in the same place when you started your record string. Jeff's first two light gun targets were 8.2'' and 8.5'', then on his third target, he could tell that the target had ''floated'' left. He tried to chase it, but to no avail, he still ended up with all five shots off target. Everyone in the third and fourth relays had shots off target, and it was not the fault of the shooters or the guns. At first the Twi-

light Zone winds and mirage took a break, and everybody in relay three started out well, Jerry Riesdorff shot a nice light gun group of 5.9'', Then Rod Serling stepped in and things started getting goofy. One nice feature was that we had a bunch of targets with no holes in them that we could use again. When looking at the conditions, the most common comment during the afternoon relays were, ''What am I supposed to do with this?'' The abusive conditions eased up just a little during relay four, but that didn't help Jerry Riesdorff who, after the second sighter period realized his scope base was loose. (Been there; done that.) And while he got it tightened back up for the record string, he now had no idea where he was and ended up with 9 shots off of his second target. Somehow Pat Billotte, of the infamous Billotte Gang, in relay four, managed to keep all of his shots on target, taking third in heavy group with a very good (in those conditions) 12.8'' aggregate. Yes, we get to do this kind of fun every month, always on the second Saturday, so put it on your calendar, bring your rifle and...a little imagination doesn't hurt. Even though long range shooters are always going to have to put up with wind and sometimes bad mirage, dealing with it is a large part of the game. Fortunately

these kinds of conditions don't show up very often. We stopped by the range office on our way out and put in a request...if Rod Serling shows up again...Don't let him in!!! Photo from Left: Wayne McDonald, Dale Arenson, Ross Herrick.

Arkansas State Razorback Turkey Shoot by Ray Porter

On August 1-2, 2015 Ouachita Sportsman’s Club held the Arkansas State Razorback Turkey Shoot with 15 shooters contending for this match. My traveling buddy, Joe McNeill won a turkey Saturday morning in the LV100 and then that afternoon he won another for the HV100. Sunday morning the HV200 was contested and Joe Hargadine received his turkey. Finally, Eddie Harris claimed his turkey in the afternoon’s LV200. Joe Hargadine is a repeat winner of the Arkansas State match.

He was the only one to really figure out the conditions. We all had a good time and temperatures were not as hot as it could have been; as the high was only 91F. The benchrest weather man promised us gentle 3 mph winds all week end and he delivered! We got 3 mph on the first half of the range out of the east and 3 mph out the west on the other half of the range. In the picture from left standing are: Joe McNeill, Gary Cox, Matt Owens, Dusty Stevens, Jason Porter, Eddie Harris, Ray Porter & Jimmy Stevens. Kneeling are Joe Hargadine & Eddie’s niece.

Desert Sportsman’s Hunter Match August 9, 2015

We had a pretty good turn out today. The weather started out nice with little wind and no mirage, but when we got to the 200 yard line, everything changed. The wind and mirage came and most of the shooters had 7 or 8 rounds in the last relay. Thank you to the guys who helped change the targets and to Ron C.for help with the scoring. Ron didn’t shoot; he just came out to help. Tacoma’s Sam Wilson Memorial Sniper King & Agg King by Dan Kjelland

Over The 4th of July weekend rail guns from 7 states congregated at the Tacoma Rifle & Revolver Club for 3 days of Unlimited Class competition. For the fourth consecutive year Gary Ocock took the Sam Wilson Memorial Two Gun. Lou Murdica won the 72nd Sniper King, the oldest trophy in benchrest, and Steve Kostanich won the second annual Agg King trophy. Over 24 competitors from WA, OR, ID, WY, CA, CO, and AZ were in attendance under sunny skies, with temps in the mid 80’s to low 90’s. Many folks camped on site, using the club’s RV facilities. On Friday evening, Teresa and Larry Boers’ put on another amazing BBQ, which featured her famous smoked brisket and pulled pork. It was a great way to enjoy the holiday weekend, here in the Pacific Northwest!

Raton’s Muchas Gracias: Baggett Bests the Field by Mark Motsko

Twenty-five competitors showed up for the July “Muchas Gracias” shoot in Raton, NM. On Saturday, “Catfish” Todd Tyler, out of Rio Rancho, New Mexico set the bar with a .119 in the LV100. Two other shooters were in the ‘ones’, with Mike Bryant from Wheeler Texas shooting a .139 and Greg Smith out of Albuquerque, NM with a .153. Tyler’s .202 in the second kept him atop the leader board, while “The Man from Rifle, Colorado” Roy Damron moved into second with a .194. Durward Wofford jumped to third with a .209. A name we haven’t seen in a long time here in Raton, Tom Guisewhite, from Las Vegas, Nevada had the small group at .119. We hope to see Tom a lot more in the future. Greg Smith took the lead in the third match, with a small group .153. Damron and Wofford remained in second and third shooting a .204, and .199 respectively. Damron’s .147 in the fourth match was the small group, and moved him into first, bumping Smith in to second, with ‘Uncle’ Larry Baggett, out of Lubbock moving ahead of Wofford into third place. The phrase, “I thought it was smaller” has to have been uttered by shooters around the world thousands of times. This time, however, it was said by one of the most influential shooters in the United States, Walt Berger. Berger’s .105 (while using a borrowed light varmint rifle from Mike Bryant) catapulted him into second place with a trophy for small match group. But when he was told of his near zero score, Berger said, “I thought it was a .075!” Berger, out of Glendale, Arizona, continues to show all shooters that age doesn’t matter in this sport. Berger’s aggregate of .2342 was good enough for second, but another ageless wonder, Damron’s .1998 earned him another

first place trophy. Damron has been on fire in Raton being near, or at the top of the winners list all year. Baggett’s .2354 was good enough for third place, bumping Smith into fourth with a .2380. Wofford’s .2558 put him in fifth place. Lighter than usual conditions greeted the shooters after lunch for the HV100 and “The Man from Rifle” picked up right where he left off in the Light Varmint. Damron’s .208 had him in the lead over Tyler and Baggett who shot .222, and .238 respectively. Damron held onto the lead, shooting a .206 in the second match. Baggett had the small group with a .196. Ed Adams, out of Albuquerque moved into third with a .235. An unusual slip by Damron, however, shooting a .335 pushed him into fifth place and opened the door for Adams who took full advantage with a .196 to move into first. He was followed by Baggett (.286) and Aaron French (.228), also out of Lubbock, Texas. Steve Murphy, also from Lubbock, had the small group with a .158. Adams continued to keep the lead with a small group .196 in the fourth match and he was followed by Baggett and Tyler. And that’s how they would finish after the fifth match was complete and the targets were hung on the wailing wall. Adams (.2360 Agg), Baggett (.2426) and Tyler (.2652) took home trophies. Smith (.2762) just edged out Damron (.2768) for fourth place. Jim Hemmert took home small group trophy with a .131. While there were showers in the forecast earlier in the week, Sunday turned out to be a sunny warm day, with nary a hint of rain. The shooters wished there was nary a hint of switching winds, but in Raton, that’s not likely. In the HV200 Sunday morning, Kelly Ellis, out of Dolores, Colorado started in first place with a .378. He was followed by Walt Berger (.413), and Mike Bryant (.414). “The Man from Rifle” didn’t let a .502 in the first match stop him, as his second match

small group .338 moved him to the top spot. Bryant stayed in second place with a .427 and Tonkawa, Oklahoma’s own Mike Cordes moved to third with a .372. Mid-Continent Director Butch Fjoser, out of Woodward, Oklahoma was in fourth. Fjoser moved up to third after the third match with a .466, and Mike Bryant took over the top spot and bumped Damron to second with a third match small group of .316. But Damron roared back with a fourth match small group .303 in the fourth to retake the top spot, as Bryant fell to second. Fjoser held on to third. In the fifth and final match, Dan Sutton, out of Glendale, Arizona took home the small group trophy with a .230. Damron held onto first place with a .1905 aggregate followed by Bryant with a .2284. Aaron French moved to third with a .2561 followed by Walt Berger’s .2631 and ‘Uncle’ Larry Baggett’s .2658. Roy Damron won the first place trophy for the Heavy Varmint Grand with a .2336, followed by ‘Uncle’ Larry Baggett’s .2542, and French’s .2700. Greg Smith came in fourth followed by Tom Guisewhite. In the LV200, Todd Tyler started with a .323, followed by Baggett’s .335. New shooter Gary Murray, out of Albuquerque was in third with a .351, followed by Cordes and French. Baggett and Tyler switched first and second place with a .333 and .592 respectively. Ed Adams’ .548 bumped Murray into fourth. Dr. Barton Carl, out of Edmond, Oklahoma won the small group trophy with a .317. After the third match, Baggett held off Tyler .376 to .464 to remain in first place. French moved to third with a .432 and Jim Hemmert moved to fourth. Jack Snyder, proprietor of the famous Edgewood Bags, shot the third match small group with a .354. Winds started switching during the fourth match, and the slide of the measuring tool got longer and longer. Baggett remained in first with a .528, Tyler second with a .625 and French third with a .589. Mike

Bryant shot the fourth match small group with a .426. It’s not often when the first place shooter shoots an inch group in the final match of the weekend and not only remains in first place, but wins the Two Gun Grand Aggregate. But that’s exactly what Larry Baggett did in Raton. His .985 gave him a .2559 aggregate and the victory. French topped Tyler for second with a .529 and .2604 aggregate. Tyler’s .627 and .2631 was good enough for third place. Steve Murphy finished fourth and Mike Bryant fifth. Baggett also won the Light Varmint Grand with a .2456, followed by French’s .2679, Bryant’s .2860. Todd Tyler came in fourth and Ed Adams finished fifth. For the Two Gun, Baggett’s .2499 topped all shooters. He was followed by French’s .2689, and Damron’s .2767. Tyler finished fourth overall and Bryant fifth. As usual, the Target Crew of John and Cole did an outstanding job. New match caller Aaron Snyder is quickly learning the intricacies of running matches, and the Whittington Center was a beautiful oasis in the New Mexico high country. We hope to see more shooters next year. Prairie Dog Target Club North Central Regional On Saturday July 4th nineteen shooters were present for the Prairie Dog 100-200-300 North Central Region Heavy Varmint and Prairie Dog Shoot at the Prairie Dog Target Club in South Dakota. The weather was sunny and warm. The whole countryside was still a beautiful green from the June rains. Both weekend days started in the low 70s and increased to the mid-80s by mid-afternoon. Saturday the winds were southerly at our backs all day. Keith Hakeman took command of the HV100 by shooting the small group, a 0.135, on the first target and went on to win easily with an 18 aggregate. Dave Gibson was second and Terry Hettich third. At 200 yards the old geezer Darrel Phillips shot the small group in two of the five matches to win with a nice 24 agg. Terry Hettich was second and Bill Pond third. Darrel took small group honors with a 0.271. In the HV300 we had minimal mirage and it was no problem seeing bullet holes. Bill Pond won the 300 yard aggregate convincingly with a 24 agg. Dave Tunbridge was second and Terry Hettich third. Small group was a 0.414 shot by Bill Pond. At the fifth target Don Deckert hung an animal target next to each 300 yard target. We could put one and only one shot on the animal target. The prize for hitting closest to a bullseye on the animal was a 5 dollar gold piece which was won by Dave Gibson. The 100-200300 aggregate winner and winner of the Prairie Dog Trophy for 2015 was Terry Hettich with a 0.2825 aggregate which edged out Darrel Phillips’ 0.2826 aggregate and Bill Pond finished in third. On Sunday morning we started the North Central Region Light Varmint and third leg of the 4 gun. We began the day at 200 yards. The

old geezer Darrel Phillips was the 200 yard winner followed by Terry Hettich and Mel Klasi. Small group was a 0.244 shot by Bill Pond. As we changed flags for the 100 yard stage the winds switched from north to south and the humidity dropped. After the first target the winds came around to the east giving us a strong right to left push for the remainder of the match. Rod Brown won the LV100 with Mel Klasi second and Darrel Phillips third. Small group was a 0.142 shot by Cliff McNairy. Darrel Phillips put his third and first place finishes together to win the LV 100-200 aggregate. Rod Brown was second and Mel Klasi third. The 2 gun consisting of the 100200-300 yard HV and the 100-200 yard LV was won by Darrel Phillips with a 0.2748 aggregate followed by Bill Pond in second and Terry Hettich third. We had a great 4th of July weekend of shooting. Thanks to Don Deckert for scoring, Dave Tunbridge for stats, Bud Schalles for match directing and Kristen Pippert and Vereen Forster for running targets. --Mel Klasi In the Porcupine photo are back row from left: Keith Hakeman, Bill Pond, Rod Brown, Mike Beard, Dave Gibson, Dave Tunbridge. Wisconsin State Hunter Championship Holmen Rod & Gun Club July 11-12, 2015

Our state championship began with breakfast in the clubhouse at 7am and 36 competitors were called to the line at 8:45 for announcements and group pictures. Weather conditions on Saturday were mostly cloudy. The temperature hovered about 80F and winds from the south at 5-15mph. The forecast called for possible severe thunderstorms later in the afternoon but that didn’t happen. Eight people kept it together and shot 250’s. Katherine Perkowski’s first visit here and the only lady gave us a lesson and put a hurting on some pretty tough old dogs to finish on top with 17 X’s to take home the 100 yard trophy. Pork tenderloin lunch was served and a drawing was held for numerous prizes donated. Bench rotation and flags were set for Sunday’s 200 yard event. In the morning, breakfast was again available at 6:30am and shooters were called to the line at 8AM. Weather forecast was much like Saturday with the temperature hitting 90F. The threat of rain kept the three relays moving. That threat faded and soon the sun was breaking through to boost mirage that was doing the flip flop

and making for some grumbling comments. TK Nollan, however, held an excellent performance and shot one of the very few 250’s at 200 yards to take home the trophy with a 250-6X. TK’s 500-21X also won him the Grand Aggregate. Everyone very quickly packed up for the trip home but most stopped by the clubhouse to (you guessed it) eat again. Trophies were awarded and the 2015 WI State was finished at 1pm, which is another record for us. I would like to thank all the individuals and the companies who donated prizes for our drawing. We appreciate it very much! Thank you to all the competitors. Your attendance and gratitude made it all worth our efforts here at Holmen. Another special thank you to everyone who helped run the match; Mary B, Jeanette H, Glenn T, Tony B in targets, scoring & computer entry. Bruce H, Chad K, Chad S and my bride Jean, preparing and serving the delicious food. Jim L, Steve R and Bruce H for range preparation and last but certainly not least, to Dick Baier for helping me with prizes, awards, t-shirts and being Head Badger of the previous 23 Wisconsin State Hunter Championships. by Craig Nagel Hunter 100-Yards Katherine Perkowski......... 250-17X
