XIII World Benchrest Championship at St Louis, Missouri USA TEAM 2 Takes the Gold & Wayne Campbell Wins Individual Gold

The 13th World Benchrest Championship was held in the United States this year at the Benchrest Rifle Club of St Louis in Missouri. It was held the week of September 22-26, 2015. Since the Championship followed the NBRSA Nationals there were only two official practice days, on September 20-21, 2015. For those not familiar with the Championship, it is held every two years. The best benchrest shooters from around the world gather for the competition. The 2015 competition brought 122 registered shooters from 19 different countries here to compete. The 12 person US Team had been chosen the prior year in 2014 by competing in the five matches labeled as “qualifying matches” as set by the NBRSA Board. The matches included the Cactus (AZ), Hog Roast (PA), East-West (MO), Rattlesnake (NM) and NBRSA Nationals (MI). The final ranking was Wayne Campbell 2015 World Benchrest Champion

based on a shooters total in the best three finishes among the five shoots. As in prior years, the team roster was pure competition. As in the past, several of the team members have made the team before. This was Tony Boyers’ 12th trip and Gene Bukys 9th. Mike Ratigan made his 8th World Team while Wayne Campbell made his 7th trip. Larry Costa was making his 4th and Chris Harris, Lester Bruno, and Jack Neary were making this their third World Championship. Bob Scarbrough, Jr. and Billy Stevens made their second trip. First time members to the team included Mark Buettgen and Mike Conry. Walt Berger served as Honorary Team Captain for the fourth time in a row. Mr. Berger has also served on the team as a member three times. The competition from the countries use various processes to select their teams. Some countries

qualify much like the US where they have to earn the team position through competition in qualifying matches. Other countries select their teams merely on the fact the shooters want to compete and are financially able to afford the expenses. Most teams receive no sponsorship or donations and the entire trip is up to each individual shooter. The US Team is very fortunate to have sponsors who either donate equipment or make financial contributions. (See sponsors listed on page 28). Hosting the match can definitely have its advantages. Due to the cost and airline restrictions, the shooters must travel with the very basic equipment and guns, usually one gun per shooter. This can present many challenges for the competitors. They must also use whatever powder is supplied by the host team, since gun powder is not allowed on airlines. The team members must also share rests, etc. Thus the “home team” can bring whatever equipment they wish to bring to the competition, without any limits. Another advantage of being the host country this year was the fact each team member had the freedom to either camp at the range or stay in local hotels. As most of you are aware the St Louis shooting facilities are phenomenal. Scott Pieper and Nancy Scarbrough and their assistants did an outstanding job. Lots of new friendships were made during the practice days with the shooters

from other countries. The American teams had to bond together also since they were in team competition now, unlike the normal individual competition to which they were accustomed. The USA teams have great talent and equipment but the concept of team competition can still be a struggle. By now each shooter realized that the competition was about to begin and it was the last chance to tweak their setups. Lots of decisions and last minute changes had to be made by each shooter. On Tuesday morning, the Opening Ceremonies were held at the range. It’s always a very special time for the shooters and guests from all the countries. This one was extra special because it was in our home country. The unity is unbelievable. It was nice as each team stands together and holds their own country flag. After short speeches from various individuals, all the team members proceeded out on the range for pictures. Once the pictures were completed the long awaited competition began. Even though every shooter is in hopes that their own team will win, it is great to see all the sportsmanship among the shooters from all over the world. After lots of handshakes and well wishes each shooter assumed their positions. The first competition of the day was the Light Varmint 100 yards. The day brought on light to medium winds with some typical St Louis switching for the shooters. USA Team 2 won the LV100 and captured the Gold with a .2160. The silver medal went the USA Team 1 with a .2230. South Africa Team 1 took home the Bronze with a .2260. In the individual Competition, Paul Sullivan (AUS) won the yardage with a fine .1672 and took home the Gold. Tony Boyer (USA) took the Silver with a .1830. Gene Bukys (USA) took third place honors with .1848 and took the Bronze medal for his efforts.

Wednesday the HV100 was dominated by USA Teams. USA Team 3 took the Gold with a .2068. USA Team 2 took the Silver medal with a .2199. And the Bronze medal went to USA Team 1 with a .2200. The HV100 Individual match was good for Finland’s Jari Raudaskoski who took the Gold medal with an excellent .1648. Bob Scarbrough, Jr.(USA) with a .1712 took the Silver medal. USA’s Mike Conry came in third to take the Bronze with a .1718. Thursday’s competition continued with the LV200 yard match. Team winners consisted of the Gold medal going to the USA’s Team 3 with a .2256. USA Team 2 took the Silver medal with a .2404 and the Bronze medal went to Australia’s Team 3 with a .2440. Individual winners were Wayne Campbell (USA) winning the Gold with a .1599. Silver medalist Steve Sori (AUS) with a .1761 and the Bronze medal winner was Bob Scarbrough, Jr. (USA) with .1899. After Day 3, the LV Grand Team

5

winners were Gold medalist USA Team 2 with a .2282. USA Team 3 took the Silver with a .2360. Australia’s Team 3 came in third and won the Bronze with a .2430. The last day of the Team championship was Friday with the HV200. The HV200 Team winners were USA Team 2 winning the Gold with a .2580. The Silver medal went to USA Team 1 with a .2676 and Bronze to Australia’s Team 1 with a .2732. USA’s Gene Bukys took first place in the HV200 individual with a .2053 taking the Gold. Second place and taking home the Silver medal was Canada’s Hugh Williamson with a .2063 and Jack Neary (USA) finished in third place with a .2087 and captured the Bronze.

HV Grand Team winners with the Gold medal were USA Team 2 with .2390. The Silver went to USA Team 1 with .2438 and the Bronze to Australia’s Team One with .2667. HV Grand Individual winners had also been decided. Gene Bukys of the USA took the Gold medal with a .2078. The Silver medal winner was USA’s Larry Costa with a .2090 and the Bronze medal went to Wayne Campbell (USA) with a .2120. After four intense days of competition it was settled. USA Team 2 is the WBC13 Team 2-Gun Champion. Gold medal winners representing USA Team 2 were Wayne Campbell, Billy Stevens Lester Bruno & Larry Costa who won with a .2335. Silver medal winners representing Australia’s Team 1 included Murray Hicks, Thomas Spain, Roger Marshall & Stuart Foate, won with a .2556. Taking the Bronze with a score of .2579 was Australia’s Team 3 consisting of Paul Sullivan, David Kerr, Fergus Bailey & Steve Sori.

The WBC13 Individual 2-gun Champion is Wayne Campbell (USA) with a .1954. The other top two winners were Silver medalist, Gene Bukys (USA) with .2067 and Bronze medalist, Murray Hicks (AUS) with .2159. The fifth and final day of the competition was the HV200 yard Individual 10 shot Championship. This was a 5 group 10 shot match at 200 yards and was not part of the team competition. Medals were awarded and this has become a serious event in WBC. Team Australia’s Mitchell Tallar took the Gold in this competition with a .3231 with Australia’s Craig Whittleton coming out and winning the Silver with a .3311 and Australia’s Murray Hicks took home the Bronze with a 3685. Australia sweeps. Great job guys! Congratulations to Team Two of the United States for keeping the Gold in the United States. Since the WBC’s inception in 1991, the US had brought home the Gold

each time with the lone exception in 2009 when it went to Australia. Closing ceremonies for WBC13 concluded on Saturday night with an awards banquet. The food was exceptional and the hospitality extended to each team was amazing. As evidenced by this article, the USA Teams and members were recognized numerous times for their Accomplishments; the highest Team Honors going to the USA Team 2, WBC13 Team Two-Gun Champions and the individual honor going to USA Team 2 member Wayne Campbell, the WBC13 Individual Two-Gun World Champion. Following all the excitement of the awards, on Sunday morning the team members either started making their way home or headed for some fun and relaxation to other areas of the country. Again we are very proud of all three USA Teams. Even though several of our team members had unfortunate situations, we still are one of the most competitive countries in the World. We came away with an amazing number of medals and awards, along with many World Records broken by several of the team members. On behalf of the US World Team, I would like to thank the team members, spouses, & guests for representing our country well. Also a BIG thank you to the sponsors and various individuals who made donations. We could not have done it without you. It has been a privilege for me to serve as your USA World Team Representative and also having the honor to be part of the USA Team. Attention all shooters! Get ready. Year 2017 is fast approaching. Start preparation now to qualify for WBC-14 to be held in Nelson, New Zealand in October, 2017. Wayne Campbell NBRSA World Team Representative Photo credit to Pat O’Malley & Bill Greene. Thank you.

2015 Rattlesnake

Bukys Beats the Rest & New Mexico State Four Gun Champion Crowned

There were 56 competitors showed up for the August ‘Rattlesnake’ shoot in Raton, NM. It was a very hazy weekend as the atmosphere pushed the smoke from the Northern California and Oregon and Washington State fires into the region. World Team member Gene Bukys, out of Crosby, Texas, had a clear sight of the targets all weekend. His .1920 aggregate for the light varmint 100 yard match bested Bob Brackney’s .1970 and Richard Brensing’s .2054 in the morning on Saturday. Ron Lax out of Albuquerque, New Mexico took home small group trophy with a .086 in the fifth and final match of the morning. In the afternoon, Rex Reneau, out of Bethany, Oklahoma had two small groups in the third and fourth match to win the 100 yard Heavy Varmint match with a .1570. Ed Adams, from Albuquerque, was second with a .2092 and Bukys took home small group with a .095 in the fifth and third place trophy with a .2232. On Sunday, Bukys started where he left off on Saturday with a wire to wire win in the 200 yard Heavy Varmint match. His .1865 bested Joe Hargadine, out of Broken Bow, Oklahoma who shot a .2155 for second. Scott Smallwood, from Longmont, Colorado came in third with a .2297. Bukys’ .189 in the third match also won him the small group trophy. Lester Bruno, out of Phoenix, Arizona took home the first place trophy for the 200 yard Light Varmint match with a .2469. Richard Brensing was just behind him with a .2590, and Bud Mundy, out of Hillsboro, Missouri came in third with a .2922. Bukys finished just out of the trophies with a .2951. Randy Pumphry took home the small group trophy with a .301 in the second match. In the Light Varmint Grand Aggregate, Richard Brensing’s .2321 took first, followed by Lester Bruno’s .2394 and Bukys’ 2436. Bob Brackney and Larry White rounded out the top five.

In the Heavy Varmint Grand Aggregate, Rex Reneau just edged out Bukys .2030 to .2049 for first. Joe Hargadine finished third with a .2283. Brensing and Jim Hemmert, rounded out the top five. For the Two Gun, it was all Bukys with a .2242 followed by Brensing’s .2362 and Reneau’s .2657. Todd Tyler, from Rio Rancho, New Mexico finished fourth and Lester Bruno came in fifth. This weekend also completed the New Mexico State Championship Four Gun started back in June. Yellowstone’s Mac Clark Memorial Score Match

By Ryan Lienemann The Yellowstone Rifle Club hosted its annual Mac Clark Memorial benchrest match June 27-28. We had 8 shooters in the hunter class on Saturday and 13 on Sunday in varmint for score. It was unusually hot for this early in the summer with afternoon temperatures pushing 100F. What a contrast it was from our match last month when we all huddled around the wood burning stove in the clubhouse trying to thaw out our trigger fingers. The HBR100 was the first order of business on Saturday morning. Although it was hot, there wasn’t much for wind, which kept the scores high all morning. Ryan Lienemann pulled off a first place finish with a score of 250-18X. Russell Cree took second place with a 250-17X and Jack Foster came in third with a 250-14X. After lunch the HBR200 match got underway and the heat was coming on from two ways--one from the blazing sun and another from Jack Foster’s blazing gun. Jack smoked us all with a 249-6X that earned him the first place trophy. Bob Lunder took second with a 245-5X and Ryan Lienemann’s 244-4X was good for third. Hunter Benchrest: Jack Foster Ryan Lienemann Bob Lunder Tim Naugle Russell Cree Gary Evans Ron Powell Varmint for Score: Gary Evans Ryan Lienemann Tim Naugle Russell Cree Ron Powell Rocky Cushman Bob Lunder Don Mulhall Rob Seelye Jack Foster Bruce Largent Dave Hellekson Rusty Martin

After the grand aggregates were tallied Jack Foster came in first with a 499-20X followed by Ryan Lienemann with a 494-22X second place and Bob Lunder with a third place finish of 494-14X. Ryan Lienemann had the most X’s with a count of 22. Sunday morning brought more heat and more shooters for the Varmint for Score class. The morning activities commenced with the 200-yard match and moderate winds. Ryan Lienemann shot his way into first with a 249-7X, followed closely by Gary Evans in second with a 2496X. Tim Naugle came in third with a 249-4X. After another lunch break and the final bench rotation and flag setting maneuvers of the weekend we got the afternoon session started with the 100-yard VFS match. The combination of high heat and high magnification scopes came into play with heavy mirage throughout the afternoon. Gary Evans put his mirage reading skills into good use and won first place with a 250-21X, followed by Ryan Lienemann in second with a 250-17X and Don Mulhall in third with 250-16X. Gary Evans’ 200-yard victory gave him the edge in the VFS grand aggregate with a first place tally of 49927X. Ryan Lienemann took second

place in the grand with a 499-24X and Tim Naugle’s 498-16X put him in third. Gary Evans put up the most X’s in VFS with a count of 27. Congratulations to the winners and thank you to all for attending and supporting our club. A big thanks to my wife Ginger Lienemann for scoring the targets, putting on the lunches and also running the target crew along with Hailey Anderson and my two sons Kyle and Tyler Lienemann. St Louis’ Dual Score Matches

by Wayne Corley July 18-19 2015 A really big thanks to all competitors for coming to our match and the competitors that missed this match missed some decent conditions and a really great time. This was our Buford Seabolt Memorial score match paying tribute a really great man. Buford was liked by everyone. Everything considered we had readable conditions for this range. Competitors that like to shoot score matches should really put this double match on their list to attend next year.

Gulf Coast Regional at Seymour, TX Mike Conry Wins...8 Times in a Row!

January, 2016 Precision Rifleman

Gulf Coast Championship

We had 24 shooters; a good turnout for this match. The Seymour,TX area had over 30 inches of rain this year. This farming and ranching community has been blessed with record setting rainfall for the year. It rained Thursday morning; a gully washer. The humidity hung around and was quite evident all weekend long. We shot the UNL100 10-shot on Saturday morning. Typical Seymour winds 10 to 15mph with gusts to 20 and quite a challenge for most. Mirage was not a big issue. The wind took care of that. The field of wind flags showed green all weekend long with the exception of one shooter who had those Aussie Flags. They drive on the left side of the road down in Australia. This may explain why the paint scheme is different. Mike Conry won the 10 shot 100 in convincing fashion with a .2092. Charles “Huck” Huckeba was second with a .2428. Tie Breaker, Scott Haywood was third with a .2428. Car Dealership Owner Ron Sewell, shot a smoking .141 10 shot group for the small group award. We came back after lunch for the UNL200 10-shot and Mike Conry kept putting the whoop on us. Mike won with .2895. Gary Bristow was second with a .3231. Trae Reed was third with a .3358. Mike Conry had small group with a .407. The trip to Seymour, included an unforgettable dining experience at the Ranger Creek Hunting Lodge. Mrs Kami Reed, our co-host, arranged for our visit to the lodge on Saturday night. We were not disappointed. The steaks were gloriously delicious and the service was professionally handled by the lodge owner. We woke up Sunday morning to a beautiful day…and more west Texas wind. The wind velocity had slightly increased from the previous day. We shot the HV200 in the morning and didn’t have to move wind flags. Mike Bryant won with .2372 agg in some tough conditions. Charles Huckeba was second with a .2427 and Mike Conry was third with a .2628. In the afternoon we moved flags and shot the HV100. Charles Huckeba layed down a .2152 agg in all that friendly

wind. Yeah, right. Tom Brown was second with a .2308 and Mike Conry was third with a .2444. We had a great time; all made possible by a group of dedicated volunteers. Thanks to Mike Cordes from Oklahoma for braving the flood waters and joining in on the fun. Also thanks to Tom Brown and Scott Haywood for making it to their first shoot at Seymour. For those of you who stayed at home, you missed a great time. Try not to let that happen again! --by Larry Baggett Photos on p.16: Range Creek Lodge, Mike Conry, GCR Champion, Hosts & Crew from L: Trae Reed, Kami Reed, Scott Hunter, Russell Hill, John Horn. Yellowstone Rifle Club’s Score Match

The Yellowstone Rifle Club in Billings Montana kicked off its benchrest season on May 23-24 with a 100/200 yard Hunter and Varmint For Score match. Temperatures were in the 60s all weekend with moderate to gusty winds and partly cloudy skies. We had 8 competitors in the Hunter Class and 9 in Varmint For Score. Things got underway on Saturday morning with the HBR100. Several shooters stayed clean through the third target, but then the winds started gusting and points started dropping. Ryan Lienemann took first place with a 250-12X. Second was Jack Foster with a 249-12X followed by Ray Becker in third with a 248-11X. After lunch we got our exercise in by rotating benches and moving flags in preparation of the afternoon HBR200. The wind picked

up a bit more in the afternoon with some surprise attacks that sent a few bullets into the nether regions. First place went to Russell Cree with a 247-2X, Ryan Lienemann posted a 246-5X that took second place and Ray Becker was not far behind with a 245-6X for third. When the grand agg’s were tallied first place went to Ryan Lienemann with a 496-17X. Jack Foster took home the second place trophy with a 494-16X and Russell Cree held on for third with a 494-11X. Bob Lunder had the most X’s overall with a count of 18. We returned to the range Sunday morning to commence with the VFS200. Bob Lunder came out on top and took first place with a 249-9X. Ray Becker was next in line with his 249-7X for second and third place went to Russell Cree with a

248-5X. Everyone refueled with another tasty lunch and then we rotated another five benches and started up the VFS100 to round out the weekend. Very calm conditions greeted us and six shooters put 250 scores on the board. We had a four-way tie for first through fourth place being 250-18X. Jack Foster’s 5X on target 1 sealed up first place. Ray Becker had 4 X’s on his first target that took second place and Russell Cree and Leonard Hensley were neck and neck up through the third target when Russ finally won out with 4 X’s over Leonard’s 3. In the VFS grand aggregate Bob Lunder got the first place trophy with a 499-26X. Ray Becker came in second with a 499-25X and Russell Cree took home third with a 498-23X. Bob Lunder and Jack Foster tied for the most X’s overall; 26 each.

SW Region Championship

November 7-8, 2015 This weekend we had our 2 day VFS & Hunter SW Regional Championship. Sunday was a great day and the top four shooters at 100 yards shot 250 scores. That’s four perfect scores. It came to counting X’s as the deciding factor for the win. Congratulations to Dave Reymore for a perfect day clean all the way. Thanks to all the shooters for showing up for the match. Mike Turner drove 800 miles for the match, I want to thank the guys for helping changing the targets and to Ron Carter for his help with the scoring. Please check next year’s schedule as we have made some changes so it won’t conflict with some of the other shooters who

September 5-6, 2015 In December, 2015’s issue the results from the Fairchance Invitational was published. This month we add the results from the Eastern Regionals, which had around 40 shooters in attendance. First our Canadian friend, Peter Smith took the lead at the HV100. Shortly thereafter Jeff Peinhardt decided it was his time and made a decicive lead taking the HV200, HV Grand. Young buck, Kevin Donalds took the lead with the LV100 and small group but back around came Peter Smith again with the LV200 win. Out of left field came Carl Thompson to win the LV Grand when no one was looking. Moving to the Unlimited’s Greg Walley took first in 100-yards followed by Jeff Peinhardt in 200 and Jack Neary won the UNL Grand. Ultimately Jeff Peinhardt took home the Two & Three Gun wins for 2015. Congratulations Jeff! Thank you to Bill & Jerry for putting on yet another successful match for NBRSA and being the exceptional hosts they have always been. Letters To The Editor

A while back I received an email question from a shooting enthusiast. It’s a question I suspect many of you have heard from time to time. I passed it along to my husband, Rod Brown to answer and thought you might appreciate it. Question: NBRSA OBJECTIVES: 1. The development and encouragement of extreme accuracy in rifles, ammunition, equipment and shooting methods; 2. The achievement of extreme precision in rifles, ammunition, equipment, and shooting methods by shooting "groups".

Anneal Cartridge Cases... $98.00

Ultimate Cartridge Check System

$79.95

So the objective is to pursue the mechanical perfection by eliminating any/all human factor. What is the difference of Benchrest and Rail Gun? Neither involve a human shooter. ANSWER: Your question is actually pretty common from people outside the Benchrest world. Sanctioned Benchrest competition has its roots in laboratory experimentation with rifle accuracy. Nearly all other shooting disciplines and contests have at their roots some kind of combat, hunting or law enforcement scenarios. This extreme accuracy objective allows focus on ultimate accuracy without any ancillary compromises for speed, distance, caliber choice, optics, or a shooter's physical abilities. Note that the objectives included "shooting methods", but did not assert "mechanical perfection" as you suggested. Watch a rail gun match and you'll see that the winners are the shooters with the most skill in tuning and wind reading. And it's a given that top competitors like Tony Boyer, Walt Berger, Gene Bukys, or Gary O'Cock can usually out-shoot the average rail gun competitor even with their Light Varmint or Sporter rifle in either 5- or 10- shot matches. This speaks to the skill, i.e. "shooting methods", necessary for extreme accuracy. It looks easy, but a lot of extremely good shooters from other disciplines have walked away when they found that their skills and tack-driver rifle got them a solid last-place at a local club match. This isn't to detract from their skill, but to point out that competing in Benchrest (with a capital "B") is a lot harder than shooting benchrest. Sixty-plus years ago, the National Bench Rest Shooters Association was formed by a group

35

of experimenters. Guys like Mike Walker, inventor of the Remington 700. One of their goals was to standardize the way we 'measure this extreme accuracy. From that grew the current definitions of our disciplines (Group, Score, and Long Range) and their respective rules and gun classes. Group shooting was the original foundation and its 4 classes -Light Varmint, Heavy Varmint, Sporter, and Unlimited (where the rail guns play). There have been many developments in equipment and methods over the years that were particular to one class or another, one discipline or another. The standardization makes results from anywhere comparable -- at the core five 5-shot groups, each group shot within a 7 minute window, averaged for a baseline at any yardage. This establishes a reliable baseline that is a much more consistent measure of gun and shooter performance than someone posting a picture of some captioned target. Like golf, anyone can have a lucky shot, but to do it over and over requires skills that can take years to master. Another fundamental principle that Benchrest founders established was that the purpose was to gain knowledge to be freely shared. The bylaws of the organization require shooters to share their equipment lists and for the organization to publish it for the membership. Unlike trap shooting and most other sporting games, the bylaws of the organization specifically limit shooter fees and exclude prize money as enticement to play the game. No one plays the game to get rich, or even pay for their equipment. This helps to solidify the concept of knowledge sharing. Rod Brown, NBRSA Web Guy & Technical Editor
