Benchrest Newbie Questions & Answers I have been wanting all my life to try BR (100-200), and just purchased a used Farley, RBLPRE , 21 inch Kreiger .237 4 groove 14 twist barrel. That is the info I have on it. I purchased it with needing a new barrel in mind, but plan to shoot like it is just to see and I need to get accustomed to this type of rifle, shooting, loading. I need some direction on brass, dies etc. With the neck .237 [sic] I assume the best way to go is get 220 russian brass to fireform that way I have an idea of the chamber dimensions I'm dealing with as I don't have any brass etc this is my first ppc any advice will be helpful. Use a fast burning pistol powder and seal the end with wax is the way I plan to fireform. Dies, I can't imagine even getting dies before I fireform some cases I have never used arbor type dies (Wilson type) but read that most BR prefer the Wilson type. I like regular

Forester dies better than any I have tried as far as a regular reloading press. I have 3 single stage press's (one is a Forester Co-Ax that does well) before spending money on dies if you were starting out what would you purchase, and any tips on sending the fireformed brass in what condition (neck turned, etc) would help. Neck turning, I have a lathe I have used before it's a bit of a pain, but in general that was for sporter rifles that I found no improvement in turning necks. I have the tooling, neck tubing micrometers etc I don't see a problem turning necks to a diameter once I know the diameter of course. If anyone can give me some pointers I would appreciate it. I'm one step closer to being able to shoot competitive. Thanks, Clint Hi Clint, About ten years ago I was in the same boat... bought out the entire setup of another who got in, tried it, had something happen in his life and decided it wasn't important. I drove home grinning like a cat with

a truckload of stuff. Had never heard of tight-necked chambers or Wilson hand dies with arbor presses. I didn't even know that stuff was in my back seat. I just knew that I already cared more about small groups than the guy I just left. I still do. Welcome aboard. Now for some newbie advice. The specific stuff is most targeted at ‘Group’ shooting, but BR competition also includes Score and Long Range shooting. Your PPC suggests that Group is the game you’ll be playing. In the beginning the temptation will be to fill a large toolbox with every new gadget you hear of. Resist... that is the path of the devil. If you cannot resist, let me send you a long list of gadgets that I have for sale. Find ONE person, preferably somewhat compatible and with a full trophy room, that you feel you can trust and listen to him. That will save you about 20,000 bullets of wasted time learning how the game works. Local if you're lucky, but not necessary. I got a lot of advice from guys 600 miles away when I was starting. If you find TWO or THREE mentors, you’ll likely be confused by their completely contradictory (though still mostly correct) advice. One gun. One of the truisms of the world is to "Beware the man with one gun -- he probably knows how to use it". This applies in benchrest as much as anything. New shooters often buy a HV, then add a LV, then a spare LV in case the other isn't shooting, and a railgun just cause they're cool. Two days of tuning before a match and they're still confused with what gun/load they should take to the line Saturday morning. One LV will cover everything until you know the wind gods on a first name basis. For more practical tips, here are some insights and answers to your original question: About 95% of short range BR group competition is shot with a 6PPC, and a majority of that is with a tight neck .262 chamber. [You said “.237 neck” but I’m sure that was a typo – your neck size is likely .262 or .268/.269 the other popular configuration – look on the barrel]. Other things work but this is likely what every mentor will

February, 2016 Precision Rifleman

know, whether they currently shoot it or not. If your new rifle is thus configured, you are already in the majority. Turning necks isn't a big deal, lots of ways to do it with a lathe or neck turning tools. Nearly 100% of our brass began life as a .220 Russian case by Lapua. For a .262 neck, brass turned down to a wall thickness of about .0081 to .0084 is pretty standard. You'll be safe using most of the bullets available. Jack Neary, a Hall of Famer, tells a story that ends with "cut 'em thin to win", so I use .0081. If your time is valuable, you can buy pre-turned brass from several folks -Ron Hoehn of St Louis is probably the most well-known vendor. The second most important piece of your equipment is your resizing die. If you don't have one, Neil Jones, Harrel's Precision, JLC or several other vendors can set you up with one for your chamber. Don't get too hung up on a perfect die for this first barrel, since barrels don't last forever. Buy your own reamer. Then get a die to match your chambers cut with your reamer. The combination will work for as long as you shoot. Your mentor will understand this. Your sizing die will have a neck bushing it. If you have a .262 neck chamber, then you'll probably only ever need .257 and .258 bushings. A different neck size will mean different bushings, of course. Experiment bigger or smaller, but remember the first point above. (I got a dozen barely used bushings to sell). You should start to see my pattern here: stick with the standard .262 neck, you get proven recipes, well stocked vendors, equipment interchangeability when you get to the shoot, and people who can help you troubleshoot with their own well-stocked toolboxes. A good powder measure and micrometer-topped seating die round out the important stuff. I use a Jones measure, Wilson and JLC seaters, and a Harrels press (multiple seaters, along with a half dozen resizers, are part of my own large-toolbox syndrome) - I got by with one for a long time, now I carry extras -- just in case (I may need ballast for a submarine some day).

Primers: Fed 205/205M is used by 95% of us when we can get them. Bullets: Lots of awesome bullet vendors: Berger and Bart are big scale, there are plenty of guys who only sell a few thousand per year that are equally good. Your mentor will have a favorite, try them and see how they work for you. All are reasonably priced. Powder: N133 has been a reigning champion for a decade or so, but lots of good shooters have won with about anything you can stuff in a PPC case – LT32, LT30, 8202, the list goes on. More important to buy a lot (20-30+pounds!) of one thing and learn to shoot it than to have a dozen jugs but not know how each one likes to be run. I remember passing on a deal to buy 44# kegs of N133 10 years ago -how I regret that decision today. Typically, 28.4 to 28.6 gr of N133 behind most any 65-68 BR bullet jammed into the lands has the potential to put you in the top half of any match you go to. If that isn’t working, go up or down, in or out until something changes. It really isn't any more complicated than that. As Grandpappy said, "The rest is just fiddlin'". Oh, I almost forgot this...the FIRST most important piece of your equipment: wind flags. Again, don't get too hung up on which ones. Single vane or double, daisy wheels, pinwheel propellers, or not, surveyor tape, sail tails, a custom braided yarn of yak feathers

5

and synthetic spider silk. All these will work and your own wind gods will still tiptoe between the flags and make your bullets look drunk. A standard is the Smiley Hensley flag -- large single vane with a daisy wheel. It is very prevalent back east, not quite so much where I shoot in the mountain west. At a National event where you’ll likely shoot over someone else’s flags, about 80% will be Smiley's or knock-offs. I'm cheap. I make my own. A 4"x17" piece of plastic sign material with a corner nipped off -- $10 at the big box store gets you two blank white garage sale signs... enough for 8-10 flag tops. Two cans of paint (green side shows for left-to-right winds, orange side for right-to-left winds), some 1/8" welding rod for pins, make a 1/4-20 adapter to mount them, tripod light stands. Surveyor tape tails. No ball bearings or whirligigs though I have found a pinch of magic reindeer dust to be helpful in Midland Texas and Porcupine South Dakota… and completely useless at Raton, Phoenix, and St Louis. This just confirms that there are many wind gods and some have home ranges, while others seem to follow a shooter like his conscience. Arizona Benchrest Shooters

Joe Pipola is the Arizona State Champion A great big thanks goes out to all who attended the first match of this year’s AZBR season! The 2015 LV-HV Arizona State Championship was held on October 3-4, 2015 at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility in Phoenix, AZ. We had a total of 22 competitors that came out this month, including Janne who came all the way from Finland. This was a challenging match to start off this season with weather that caused quite a challenge for our shooters. Saturday’s 100 yard matches started off Sunny and with a little wind, allowing some very nice low teen groups to be shot. As the day progressed, wind picked up a little bit, with some light gusts here and there. We were thrilled to see one of our resident junior shooters, Tony DeBacco, rank 2nd on the Light Varmint 5 shot 100 yard matches with a 0.2318” agg, just slightly behind Bench Rest Hall of Famer, Gary Ocock’s 0.2156” agg. As Sunday began, the weather decided to give us a challenging day. The morning started with gusty winds and intense rainfall that proved quite challenging to even the most seasoned bench rest shooters. Looking over the Heavy Varmint 200 yard Match 1 scores, you can see half of the competitors shot groups over an inch. Our target crew brought back every target

soaked that match! Finland Bench Rest shooter Janne explained that he enjoys shooting when the weather is challenging, because it makes it more competitive and fun. Even though weather began harsh, the day ended with the sun shining and happy faces. Joe Pipola took first with a convincing 0.2894” 2-gun agg, followed by Dana Andrus with a 0.3086” agg and Gary Ocock with a 0.3095” agg. Very impressive aggs considering the gusty winds! We look forward to seeing the results for the 2nd part of Arizona State Championships November 7-8, 2015. Remember, even if you missed this first match, you can still be part of our Ironman Agg if you make it to the remaining 6 matches in the season! We held the Kansas State Light & Heavy Varmint Championship over this weekend and had a nice turnout of 33 competitors on Saturday and 32 on Sunday. It was nice to see Jim Gardner back on the range as he had not been doing well but was able to attend on Saturday. Mike McFarland was also back to shooting on the range. He and his wife have traveled the US since the May match. Glenn Burditt made his first trip to Mill Creek and we were happy to meet him and hope he

will attend in the future. We shot 100-yards on Saturday and Chet Whitebread became the Kansas State LV100 Champion with a real nice .2004 aggregate. Larry Scharnhorst, Bud Mundy, Jim Carstensen and Dee Myers followed. Larry Scharnhorst fired the small group at .110. Richard Brensing became the Kansas State HV100 Champion with a tidy .1986 aggregate. Keith Cottrell, Larry Scharnhorst, Ron Miller and Graeme Smith from New Zealand followed. Keith Cottrell fired the small group at .101. Sunday morning the 200 yard stage

claimed Kansas State Heavy Varmint Grand Aggregate Champion with his .2326. Keith Cottrell was very close behind, Chuck Miller, Ron Miller, Dewayne Stafford followed as the top five placements. In the LV Grand, Dee Myers took the title of Light Varmint Grand Aggregate Champion with a .2664. Jim Carstensen was once again right on his heels along with Chet Whitebread, Fred Martin and Richard Brensing. Ultimately Richard Brensing won the Kansas State Two Gun Championship with a .2717. Keith Cottrell followed with Chuck Miller, Dee Myers and Mike McFarland followed. This was a great shoot as we had four different winners at each yardage. Thank you to everyone who attended and we hope you enjoyed yourselves and return next year with a friend! --Don Creach In the photo on page 8 from left: Dee Myers, Mike McFarland, Chet Whitebread, Jim Carstensen, Richard Brensing, Keith Cottrell & Chuck Miller. For this short range match, held August 1-2, 2015, at Sacramento Valley Shooting Facility, we had thirteen competitors. The weather was not as hot as predicted. Temperatures were 85F on Saturday and 80F on Sunday; conditions were very tricky. Art Kawai had three small match wins during the course of the weekend to claim the LV Grand and Dan Lutke won the LV100. Conditions were rough in the afternoons-–only three sub one inch groups in match one. There was only one person, Michael Taner, who did not have a one inch group for the day. Thirty out of sixty groups for the day were over one inch. Ultimately Greg Wilson claimed all yardages in the HV as well as the Two Gun victory. Congratulations to the winners and thank you for coming. --Dan Lutke Light Varmint 100-Yards Dan Lutke.................... 0.3094 Greg Wilson.................. 0.3122 Art Kawai..................... 0.3184 Steve Epstein................ 0.3202 Joe Pehanick................. 0.3316 Stu Harvey................... 0.3360 Bob Dorton................... 0.3464 Michael Taner................ 0.3472 Larry Mather................. 0.3542 Ronald Chisick............... 0.3638

Ojai Valley Gun Club September 20, 2015 was another beautiful day in Rose Valley for our 600 yard match. Eleven competitors shot on an almost perfect day. The match ran very smoothly and Don Nielson, (NBRSA VP and a LR Hall of Famer) was present and shot very well. A truly fine target was shot in Heavy Gun by Mike Leonard with 9 shots in the ten ring, with one in the 8 for a great 98 one target score and Don Nielson also posted a fine 98. In Light Gun Bill Bonser cranked out a 50. Bill Hubina continued to put the pressure on. Special thanks goes to Cindy Bluhm and Heather Johnson for their dedication in keeping the process of registration going quickly, as well as their direction in the pit area to keep things running smoothly. The Ojai Range is a beautiful place to shoot. Camping is available. Texan Takes Tumbleweed Title by Mark Motsko Albuquerque, New Mexico may be famous for the town Bugs Bunny, “shoulda made a left turn in” and more recently for Walter White’s special blue meth from ‘Breaking Bad’. But for the last 40+ years, Albuquerque has always been known for the International Balloon Fiesta. Hundreds of hot air balloons fill the skies for the first two weekends in October bringing tens of thousands of visitors from all around the world. Inevitably, when an event is so weather dependent, Mother Nature tends to not cooperate to allow for successful launches every morning. But not this year. For the first time in almost 20 years the balloons launched every morning with crystal clear skies and little to no wind. Of course, that made the organizers of the Tumbleweed a little nervous, because we shoot the following weekend after the fiesta. Luckily, showers came during the weekend practice time. Twenty-three shooters met at the New Mexico Shooting Range State Park on the west side of Albuquerque this year for the 2015 Tumbleweed. On Saturday morning, Durward Wofford, out of Melrose, NM started the LV100 match off with a .152, followed by Jim Hemmert out of Kalvesta, KS with a .194 and Kelly Ellis from Dolores, CO, with a .197. Charles Huckeba, from Odessa, TX made the small group of .124 which moved him into first after the second match followed by Ron Lax out of Albuquerque and Gary Bristow out of Burnet, TX. Huckeba held onto the lead for the rest of the morning with a .212, .258, and a .159 for a .2008 agg. Scott Haywood, also out of Odessa, shot a match small .123 in the third match and was second

with a .2316. Steve Murphy, out of Lubbock, edged out Ed Adams on his home range .2596, to .2610 for third. Saturday afternoon, for the HV100, ‘Uncle’ Larry Baggett out or Lubbock, TX started things with a .163 followed by Hemmert’s .182 and Scott Smallwood, out of Longmont, CO was in third with a .214. In the second match, Gary Bristow and Larry White, out of Sun City, AZ knocked Baggett to third with a .112, and .125. Baggett fell two more spots after the third match, as Jack Snyder from Edgewood, NM moved to third. Bristow and White remained in first and second. Durward Wofford’s screamer .077 in the fourth match was good enough to win the small group trophy on Sunday afternoon, but only good enough to move him into second place, as he trailed White. Smallwood moved into third, bumping Snyder to fourth. Finally after the last match on Saturday, White remained in first place with a .2224, Smallwood finished second with a .2300. A few years ago, Amanda Lax from Albuquerque was on the target crew running targets and backers in Raton and Albuquerque. For the last couple of years she’s been shooting with her father, Ron. Her fifth group .148 was small group of the match, and it moved her into third place with a .2436. All the guys were very happy for Amanda and her third place trophy. On Sunday, with some hot air balloons taking off (they launch almost year round) we started with the HV200. Scott Smallwood was the only competitor in the 2’s, with a .245. Lester Bruno was second with a .339, followed by Baggett with a .352. Smallwood fell to fourth after the second match as Bruno took the top spot. Huckeba was second followed by Scott Haywood, who shot the second match small group .282.

Huckeba and Bruno flipped first and second after the third match, with Haywood remaining in third. Ed Adams won the small group trophy with a HV200 yard small group of .202. Bruno regained the top spot after the fourth match with a .387. Dan Sutton, out of Phoenix moved to second with a match small .247 bumping Huckeba to third. And that’s how they’d finish after the fifth match. Bruno’s .2025 bested Sutton’s .2131 and Huckeba’s .2266. Adams finished fourth and Dr William Marsh, also out of Phoenix, came in fifth. For the Heavy Varmint Grand Aggregate, Scott Smallwood won with a .2363, followed by Charles Huckeba’s .2430, and Ed Adams’ .2528. Finally the LV200 yard match got underway, and Steve Murphy started in first with a .311. Bruno kept his hot hand with a .341 to take second place, and Sutton’s .377 placed him third. Bruno and Murphy switched places as Bruno’s .497 bested Murphy’s .551 in the second match. Sutton remained in third place. Hemmert’s .363 won small group for the second match. Bruno remained in first after the third match, while Sutton moved into second. Michael Turner, out of Cloudcroft, NM, and shooting .30 shot the third match small group with a .366, moving himself into third place. Hemmert came back strong in the fourth match winning the trophy for small group with a .271, moving him into first place and bumping Bruno into second. Bud Schalles, out of LaPorte, CO moved into third place, bumping Turner into fourth. When it was all over, Hemmert held onto first place with a .2329. Turner was second with a .2616, just edging out Schalles with a .2623. For the Light Varmint Grand Aggregate, Charles Huckeba won with a .2521, followed by Jim Hemmert’s .2601 and Bud Schalles’ .2682.

And for the Two Gun Grand Aggregate, Odessa Texas’ Charles Huckeba took home the trophy with a .2476, followed by Jim Hemmert’s .2654, and Larry White’s .2728. Fall Classic

Western Wayne Conservation Assn Plymouth, MI October 3-4, 2015 I have been here for 1 week and I want to tell you that there is nothing like the Northern States in the fall, except Canada of course. Temperatures range in the 6070’s in the day and 40-50 at night. There were 22 people who came to do battle with the elements. Joe Krupa led the charge on Saturday morning in LV100 with a .241, then a .240 and back that up with a pair of .188’s. Then along came Lee Hachigian on the last target and shot a .096 to win with a .2220 to Joe’s .2222. Now that is close shooting. Third was Pat Metcalf with a .2246. Pat is all the way from Ohio. Small group was the .096 shot by Lee Hachigian. In the HV100 Saturday afternoon, John Petteruti, from Ohio, gave us all a lesson on shooting with a fine .2306 agg and next was an.2366 shot by our Canadian friend, Peter Smith. He is on the watch list for shooting as he has had some great skill lately. In third was the old man, Victor Potts with a .2492. The weather stayed the same. Small group was a .140 by Tim Bassham, Tim looks after the score shoots at WWCCA which are almost on a

monthly basis. About 15 drops of rain fell and that was it until Sunday morning for the HV200. It was Peter Smith all the way in the HV200. Peter Smith was on a rail gun mission, his biggest group was a .465 on the last target and his smallest was a .270 to give him a .1875 agg. Terrible Ted Heindselman was second with a .2268 and Joey Krupa, third with a .2725 agg. Small group was a .261 by Joe in an attempt to dismantle Peter. Now we get the LV200 and it was Peter all the way with a...are you

ready for this? .1647 agg, which included two, back to back aces at 200yds. M2 with a .193 and M3 with a .141. Joe Krupa tried hard to catch him with a .1870 agg, but to no avail. Third was that other Canadian, Bill Gammon shooting a .2337. I think the largest group of the fifteen groups shot at LV200 was a .631. Makes you kind of wonder where the world is headed. Small group was Peter’s .141. These small shots of course, gave Peter Smith another Two Gun win with an even .2100 aggregate. Second was Joey Krupa at a .2375 and third was Victor Potts at .2720. Bill Gammon’s .2771 held forth and fifth went to John Petteruti with a .2832. We want to welcome Ronald Bush as his first time out to shoot group. He has always been a score shooter until this match. I ended up with his email address, his living address, and his phone number, so I think he is serious. This ends the Western Wayne County Conservation Association 2015 program. The works are in progress for an even bigger program with new target boards, bigger suppers, new mov-

Everet Smith Wins Two Gun at Palomino Valley On September 26-27th, the Palomino Valley Gun Club hosted eight competitors for a Two Gun match at our benchrest range north of Reno, Nevada. On Saturday the 26th we shot 200yds in hot and breezy conditions. Beginning with LV, Everet Smith placed first with a .3267 agg, followed by Mark Ronchetti in second and Lonnie Gordon in third. Mark Ronchetti shot the small group of 0.246”. Moving on to HV200, Mark Ronchetti placed first with a .3238 agg, Lonnie Gordon placed second and Steve Archibald placed third. Mark Ronchetti shot a Screamer 0.169” for small group. Sunday brought hot temperatures again but more moderate winds than the day before as we started with HV100. Everet Smith absolutely dominated the competition shooting all five small groups with three of them in the ones and a winning teen agg of .1968! There have only been several teen aggs fired at our range, so Everet received many congrats from everyone who shot alongside him. Steve Archibald finished second followed by Lonnie Gordon in third. Everet’s small group was a 0.127”. Finishing the match with LV100, Jan Sarras found a condition to shoot a winning .2618 agg, Steve Archibald finished a close second place, and third place went to Mark Ronchetti. Don Archibald shot a nice 0.176” for small Group. Light Varmint Grand top three finishers were Steve Archibald in first, Mark Ronchetti in second, and Everet Smith in third. Heavy Varmint Grand top three were Everet Smith in first, Steve Archibald in second, and Lonnie Gordon in third. Our Two Gun Champion was Everet Smith. Steve Archibald finished a close second and Mark Ronchetti place third.

As always, we were grateful to have our target pulling and scoring sister team of Kerry Sarras and Kelly Marsh. Larry Boers Wins Ed Frombach Memorial WA State 3-Gun to become NW Shooter of the Year

Over the Labor Day weekend Larry Boers won the Ed Frombach WA State 3 Gun and in doing so put the finishing touches on a fantastic year of shooting. Together with his wins in April and May, Larry has become the 2015 NW Region Shooter of the Year. Congratulations Larry, you set the bar extremely high this year. On Saturday, 19 shooters faced rain, almost no wind, and a temp of 50. By noon it had warmed to 70 degrees under partly cloudy skies

with a switching wind. Mirage was an issue at times. In Sporter 100 yard agg shooting, Sandra Simon started things off by taking the first lead of the weekend. Larry Boers was on top in the second match, and Jeff Lewis led in the third. Rick Graham then went to the front in match fourth and stayed there for the win with a .1952 agg. Jeff Lewis (.2052) ended up in second place and first year shooter Matt Spradlin (.2236) took third. In the Sporter 200 yard agg, Sandra Simon again took the early lead and this time held on to it through the third match. Denny Andrews topped the board in the fourth

match, but Rick Graham pulled through for the win, with a .2630 agg. Don Carter (.2648) came in second and Steve Kostanich (.2682) was third. With both yardage wins, the Sporter Grand agg was taken by Rick Graham with a .2291 agg. Jeff Lewis (.2461) came in second and Steve Kostanich (.2710) finished in third. On Sunday, 16 shooters again met with rain and 54 degrees. By midmorning there were sun breaks and an increasing wind. By the afternoon it was 60 degrees with light winds. In the LV 200 yard agg, Don Carter took the initial lead and kept it through the third match. But Jeff Lewis took over in the fourth and held on in the fifth, winning with a .2308 agg. Steve Kostanich and Matt Spradlin both scored .2903 to tie for second place, and Don Carter (.2953) held on for third. In the LV 100 yard agg, Jeff Lewis took the lead in the first match but Larry Boers rose to the top in the second match and never looked back, winning with a .2382 agg. Jeff Lewis (.2396) finished in second place and George MacDonald (.2618) took third. The results of the LV Grand agg put Jeff Lewis (.2352) on top, with Larry Boers (.2746) in second place and George MacDonald (.2816) in third. On Monday, 18 shooters started the day with 56 degrees under clouds and calm winds. We soon had more sun breaks and by afternoon it was summer again, with 68 degrees under sunny skies and a fairly steady breeze. Mirage was again part of the picture. In the HV 100 yard agg Bob Boldman shot smallest in the first match. But once again Larry Boers took the lead in the second match and didn’t let go, winning with a decisive .1700 agg. Denny Andrews (.2410) came in second place and

Mustafa Bilal (.2434) finished third. In the HV 200 yard agg, Larry Boers came out strong in the first match and maintained the lead through the fourth match. Steve Kostanich turned the table in the fifth match, winning with a .2302 agg. Mustafa Bilal (.2447) finished in second place and Larry Boers (.2509) settled into third. With his big lead in the 100 yard, Larry Boers emerged as the HV Grand agg winner with a score of

.2105. Mustafa Bilal (.2440) took second place and Steve Kostanich (.2666) finished third. When shooting was completed and all the results tallied, Larry Boers emerged the 3-Gun winner with a .2575 grand agg. Jeff Lewis (.2627) came in second and Steve Kostanich (.2797) finished in third place. So ended the 2015 season, and what an enjoyable year it was. The weather was great, the conditions were challenging and the company was enjoyable. Yellowstone Rifle Club

Montana State Championship Lienemann Wins Light Varmint Brown Takes Heavy & Two Gun The Yellowstone Rifle Club hosted the Montana State Light and Heavy Varmint Championship on July 25-26. We had a great turnout of shooters with 20 competitors vying for the trophies and bragging rights. Temperatures topped out in the low 90’s with clear skies and moderate winds. The stage was set nicely for our first group match of the year. Justin Young started the weekend off by winning the LV100 match with a .2766 aggregate. Rodney Brown came in second with a .2858 agg and was followed by John Donnelly in third with a .2976. Dave Hellekson claimed the LV100 small group award with a teeny-weeny .091. The LV200 match was up next and despite the usual switchy winds of our range this time I managed to not screw up too badly and pulled off a first place win with a .3045 aggregate. Dave Hellekson took home the second place trophy with a .3506 and Rodney Brown finished with a .3538 that earned him the third place honors. The 200 yard small group award went to Rocky

Cushman with a very nice .380 he fired in match 4. At the end of the day, the LV grand aggregates were tallied and my 200-yard win bumped me up enough in the grand to earn the first place trophy with a .3092. Rodney Brown’s .3198 took second place and Dave Hellekson came in third with a .3278. The top five was rounded out by Justin Young, who shot a .3462 and Roger Schuppe with a .3691. On Sunday morning we continued on with the HV200 match. Justin Young was untouchable with a .2536 agg that no one else even came close to. What really sealed the deal for Justin was the .292 group he threw down in match 4, which also earned him the small group award for the yardage. Dave Hellekson was up next with his .3094 posting that was good for second and Rodney Brown came in third with a .3122 agg. We finished off the weekend with the HV100 match, and once again Rodney Brown was on the leader board and finished first with a .3166 aggregate. Dave Gibson took the second place honors with a .3352 and John Donnelly was in third with a .3468. Richard Lynn won the HV100 small group award with a very nice .192 group in the second match.

In the HV grand, Rodney Brown came out on top with a first place tally of .3119. Justin Young’s 200yard win moved him up to second place in the grand with a .3243 and Dave Gibson pulled through with a .3333 that was good for third. Finishing out the top five were Dave Hellekson with a .3376 and Paul Holland with a .3415. With his fine finishes throughout the weekend, it was no surprise that in the twogun, Rodney Brown prevailed and was awarded the first place trophy for his .3159 aggregate. Dave Hellekson was second overall with a .3327 and Justin Young’s .3353 took home the third place two-gun award. Ryan Lienemann came in fourth with a .3372 and Dave Gibson was fifth with a .3539. I want to congratulate the winners and thank all of the competitors for attending the match and continuing to supporting our club. We all owe a big thanks to my wife Ginger for scoring the targets, putting on the lunches and the countless other chores she does to help me run these matches. I couldn’t do it without her. Thanks also to the target crew Hailey Anderson, Kyle Lienemann and Tyler Lienemann. --Ryan Lienemann, Match Director

Southeast Regional Championship Here are the results from the River Bend Gun Club SE Regional held at Dawsonville, Georgia on October 9-11, 2015. We had a great turnout with 19 unlimited contestants and 35 for the bag guns. Bart Sauter and Don Hardeman shared wins in the Unlimited yardages. Bart continued his winning ways by taking both HV100 and LV100. Bill Greene stepped up to the plate and won the HV200 and Jeff Graves showed he had the “right stuff” by winning the LV200 and the Light Varmint Grand. Bart was having none of it and came back to win the Unlimited and Heavy Varmint Grand as well as the Two and Three Guns. Congratulations to Bart Sauter! Sacramento 1,000-Yard Competition

A typical calm early morning wind was present for this August match. We had 18 members attending. After the safety meeting the calm was replaced by a shifting breeze for the first relay. Throughout the rest of the match winds were building with more shifting conditions. This was a typical Sacramento event with the ever present wind. Ken Schroeder was at or near the top on every target and landed the top shot for the day. Ken is one of our senior veteran shooter and wields a very accurate little 6 BR. A total of eighteen shooters from throughout the state attended this quarterly match, including Don Nielson, a NBRSA official who shot very well. Following are the placements for each three-target match and the six-target Two Gun results. Congratulations to Ken Schroeder and thank you to everyone for participating. These events require many volunteers and much shooter participation. For this we thank all of you. --Craig St Claire Light Gun Group Andy Anderson................ 8.181 Ken Schroeder................ 8.524 Don Nielson................... 8.896 Gary Gagliano................ 9.821 Marek Zawadzki.............. 9.848 John McGaughey............ 10.856 Shooter Raymond Garrick Bill Habina Bill Habina Wally Laursen Bob Landis Ken Schroeder Marek Zawadzki John McGaughey Bob Dorton Don Nielson Keith Faller Norm Matzen Ron Chisick Gary Gagliano Rob Allen

There were so many new shooters in 2015 that I’ve doubled-up the spacing to accommodate all the new names! A good problem to have, for certain. “White-Hot” Larry Wins the Firewalker

Howdy all! Wile E Coyote reporting from Northern Colorado Benchrest Shooters. It’s the FIREWALKER! Our biggest match of the year was held September 5-6, 2015. Gorgeous weather for shooting graced 40 shooters who came out for Light and Heavy Varmint matches. Varmint shooters lined up at the benches, rifles at the ready. Everyone was eager to get started on the 100 yards Light Varmint target. Larry White scored an Agg of 0.1726. He also took the Small Group and Screamer with a beautiful group of 0.0930. Great shooting Larry! After target frames were moved to 200 yards and everyone loaded another mass of shells we headed to the benches again. Jeff Anderson took the first place position with a score of 0.2227 and the Small Group went to Bob Martinez with a size of 0.2850. The 100/200 Grand Agg for the day went to Scott Smallwood with his awesome score of 0.2298. This is one good shooter folks! Sunday’s 200 yards Heavy Varmint match was dominated by Larry who shot a beautiful score of 0.2380. Scott Smith claimed the Small Group for the match of 0.3060. Wow guys! After a quick lunch break to move the targets and settle down from the excitement of the morning and tiny groups flying left and right, we went to the line. Muriel Hensely took the lead in this 100-yd match

with her tiny agg of 0.1986 and Larry claimed the Small Group (which was a Screamer too) with a 0.0970. Really smart shooting coyotes! The 100/200 yard win for the day went to Larry White with his combined Agg of 0.2264. Beautiful shooting Larry! The Firewalker also marks the end of our 3-gun and 4-gun matches. The 3-gun consists of Heavy, Light and Sporter Varmint shot throughout the year. Our winner was Larry White with a Grand Agg of 0.2507. Good job Larry! The 4-gun consists of Heavy, Light, Sporter and Unlimited 10-shot Varmint shot throughout the year. Our winner was Larry White with a Grand Agg of 0.2392. Super shooting! As always none of this could happen without the shooters who come to play and the top notch staff, match director and target crew. We hope you come to join us at any of our matches and don’t forget about our Annual Firewalker Match! --LuAnn Dill Light Varmint 100-Yards Larry White................. 0.1726 Ernie Martin.................. 0.2028 Scott Smallwood............ 0.2094 Michael Beard............... 0.2100 Bill Pond...................... 0.2164 Cliff McNairy................. 0.2238 Scott Smith.................. 0.2314 Muriel Hensley............... 0.2318 Dave Tunbridge.............. 0.2326 JD Goulette.................. 0.2510 Light Varmint 200-Yards Jeff Anderson............... 0.2227 Scott Smallwood............ 0.2502 Bill Pond...................... 0.2708

the most helpful and talented men I’ve met along the way. Though he won many championships, Jerry was a modest man who always was there to help other shooters. I will really miss him. AccurateShooter. com owes a debt of gratitude to Jerry. With his technical expertise, he helped me greatly with my understanding of rifle accuracy. Jerry was small in stature, but big in talent. Rest in Peace Jerry. We’ll miss your smarts, your good humor, and your love for the sport. Jerry Tierney shot competitively for nearly 50 years and won multiple championships in various rifle disciplines. Fellow shooter Donovan Moran noted: “Jerry was the leading member of the NBRSA ‘Long Range Hall of Fame’ — well deserved! He was a very friendly man, a mentor to the sport, and one of the best Long Range competition shooters there’s ever been.” With great natural talent and the mind of a scientist, Jerry could win events in ways not thought possible. He is certainly the only man I know

who won a Benchrest Championship shooting a prone-type tube gun. In the last decade he turned his attention to 600-yard and 1000-yard benchrest and F-Class. He won multiple NBRSA Nationals, due in no small part to superb wind-doping skills and mastery of the “mental game”. A former computer engineer with IBM, Jerry was an extremely bright guy who took a systematic approach to the sport. He made decisions based on hard data. He did things many shooters once considered radical (such as cleaning his barrels infrequently), but he always had the data to back up his methods. He was a forward thinker who wasn’t afraid to depart from conventional wisdom if he found a better way to do things. For me, Jerry Tierney was an important mentor — he showed me how the “state of the art” could be pushed to higher levels with careful experimentation and a willingness to try new things.
