The world’s youth dances in the Berghain nightclub, lives in shared flats in sprawling pre-WWII buildings and works in the Factory as part of the new economy. Berlin is fashion.

Berlin is business. Berlin is where technology and innovation meet.

“What does it mean to build a career if not to live in Berlin, and what does it mean to live in Berlin if not to build a career.” Theodor Fontane’s succinct observation of the Gründerzeit period, the economic boom that took place during the time of the German Empire, is more relevant than ever. Only this time around, Siemens, Borsig and Schering have been replaced by new forces for growth such as Zalando, Wooga and SoundCloud. A digital start-up is founded every 20 hours in Berlin, according to the senate. Every fifth company in Berlin belongs to the creative industry, which generates a tenth of all economic revenue – a healthy 16.6 billion euros. A study carried out by ­McKinsey puts Berlin in fifth position as a worldwide start-up centre, after Tel Aviv, London, Paris and Moscow.

The perpetually unfinished Berlin has always been a magnet for trailblazers, from the Huguenots to Olafur Eliasson, from David Bowie to the Loveparade. There is scope and a following for every idea – and the encouragement to pick yourself up if you fail. A loose interpretation of Samuel Beckett applies here: “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” The wild energy of the Berlin art scene also inspires people like Mario Testino, himself a passionate collector and Berlin enthusiast. The fashion photographer has chosen to make Berlin the first European stop of his retrospective In Your Face this year, even ahead of his London home. In Berlin, art and fashion have always been inextricably linked. And fashion is getting in on the act.

Thanks to Fashion Week and countless auteur labels such as Lala Berlin, Kaviar Gauche and Fiona Bennett, the fashion industry once again has economic clout, with more than 3,500 companies and a workforce of around 19,200. The industry generated a turnover of around three billion euros in 2011. Fashion Week alone generates an additional economic output of approximately 120 million euros, according to calculations by the Investitionsbank Berlin.

A strong infrastructure is building up in Berlin, with nine fashion schools calling the city home. Connections with the start-up scene pave the way for completely new business models: online platforms, wearable devices, augmented reality. BERLINER mode SALON Wer folgt den Lagerfelds, Joops und Sanders?

Deutsches Modedesign boomt! Von Damir Doma bis Stephan Schneider sind deutsche Designer weltweit begehrte Kreative, Marken wie Lala Berlin oder Frank Leder sorgen für internationale Wahrnehmung, Modeschulen expandieren, Abschlussschauen wie Kombinat Kollektionen gehen neue Wege. Und doch fehlt eine zentrale Plattform für deutsches Design, die bekannt macht, die hilft, Talente auch in Deutschland zu fördern.

Der Berliner Mode Salon wagt den Versuch.

Mit ihm startet dieses Jahr ein Format, das Catwalk und Konferenz vereint. Sein Clou: verschiedene Formate von Showroom bis Defilee, von Konferenz bis Gruppenshow über mehrere Tage an einem zentralen Ort, dem Kronprinzenpalais auf historischem Grund – Unter den Linden. Ein kuratierter Querschnitt relevanter deutscher Designer, den man so geballt noch nie sah. Unter anderem sind dabei Allude, Dawid Tomaszewski, Haltbar, Hien Le, Iris von Arnim, Lala Berlin, Marina Hoermanseder, Isabel de Hillerin, Michael Sontag, Odeeh, Perret Schaad, René Storck, Talbot Runhof, Tim Labenda, Dorothee Schumacher, Malaikaraiss, Schacky and Jones. Lagerfeld, Joop and Sander – who’s next? German fashion design is booming! From Damir Doma to Stephan Schneider, German designers are internationally sought-after creatives.

Brands such as Lala Berlin and Frank Leder are appreciated the world over, fashion schools are expanding, and graduation shows, like Kombinat Kollektionen, are heading in new directions. And yet there is still no central platform for German design that helps publicise and promote talent in Germany.

The Berliner Mode Salon is attempting to do just that. It is introducing a concept this year that combines a catwalk with a conference.

Highlights include an eclectic range of formats including a showroom, a parade, a conference and a group show, taking place over several days in a central location: the Kronprinzenpalais on the historic street Unter den Linden. A curated cross-section of relevant German designers, never before seen all together. Among others, the designers include Allude, Dawid Tomaszewski, Haltbar, Hien Le, Iris von Arnim, Lala Berlin, Marina Hoermanseder, Isabel de Hillerin, Michael Sontag, Odeeh, Perret Schaad, René Storck, Talbot Runhof, Tim Labenda, Dorothee Schumacher, Malaikaraiss, and Schacky and Jones. There will be a German Fashion Council in no time. Berlin has got its Berlin chic back.

At hackerspaces, university tech campuses, research labs and artist studios, the future of fashion is emerging: clothing and accessories with a high-tech touch.

Berlin Fashion Week will see a gathering of the first #FASHIONTECH BERLIN conference designers, experts and creative minds who are reinventing the fashion world at the crossroads between fashion and technology. In a series of talks and workshops, they will give the industry a glimpse into the world of wearable trends.

Zur Berlin Fashion Week versammelt die erste #FASHIONTECH BERLIN-Konferenz Designer, Experten und Kreative, die die Modewelt an der Schnittstelle von Fashion und Technologie neu erfinden – und gibt der Branche mit Talks und Workshops einen Einblick in Wearable-Trends.

Expertinnen wie Lisa Lang von der Agentur ElektroCouture und Journalistin Felicitas Hackmann bewerten bei der #FASHIONTECH BERLIN den aktuellen Markt und die Zukunft von Wearables, Dr. Fabian Hämmert vom Design Research Lab der Universität der Künste Berlin zeigt, wie Wearables gesellschaftliche Impulse setzen.

Wearables sind längst mehr als Tracking-Fitnessarmbänder und Smartwatches. Junge und etablierte Modedesigner experimentieren mit Wearables für den ganzen Körper: von smartem Street Style oder Sportk leidung wie Snowboardjacken, die die Temperatur ­ selbstständig anpassen, bis zur programmierbaren Haute Couture. Die Vision: Produkte, die Funktion und gutes Design vereinen und bei denen Technik Stilelement ist, oder subtil verschwindet.

Pioniere der Wearables-Szene stellen bei der ­#FASHIONTECH BERLIN ihre Projekte vor – wie das Berliner DIY-Kollektiv Trafo Pop, das neonbunte Leuchtwesten bastelt, Stilnest, die Schmuck aus dem 3D-Drucker produzieren, oder Designerin Phoebe Heess, die bei ihrer futuristischen Solo-Kollektion „Black Current“ auf High-Tech-Material und HealthGoth-Look setzt.

Auf der Konferenz wird auch diskutiert, wie die Digitalisierung die Modebranche verändert: Mit sozialen Netzwerken wie Instagram als neuer Marketing-Plattform, Crowdsourcing, Crowdfunding für die Finanzierung von Projekten und veränderten Innovationsprozessen. Innovationen im hochkomplexen Wearables-Bereich entstehen meist durch eine Zusammenarbeit von großen und kleineren, spezialisierten Playern – die sich bei der ­#FASHIONTECH BERLIN vernetzen können.

Experts like Lisa Lang from ElektroCouture Agency and journalist Felicitas Hackmann assess the current market and the future of wearables at #FASHIONTECH BERLIN. Dr. Fabian Hämmert from Design Research Lab at the Berlin University of the Arts shows how wearables drive societal momentum.

Wearables have been more than fitness tracking wristbands and smartwatches for a while now. Young and established fashion designers have been experimenting with wearables for the whole body: from smart street style to athletic clothing to snowboard jackets that adjust their temperature, and even programmable haute couture. The vision: products that combine function and great design with a technological element that is either a style statement, or subtly fades into the garment.

Pioneers in the wearables scene will be presenting their projects at #FASHIONTECH BERLIN. Experience Berliner DIY collective Trafo Pop, who craft neon light vests, Stilnest, who produces 3D-printed jewelry, and designer Phoebe Heess, whose futuristic solo collection “Black Current” looks to high-tech materials and the health goth look.

The conference will also be a forum for discussions on how digitalization is changing the fashion industry: social networks like Instagram serving as a new marketing platform, crowdsourcing, crowdfunding to finance projects and new innovation processes. Innovations in the highly complex wearables segment are generally born from co-operations between large-scale and small-scale specialized players. #FASHIONTECH BERLIN will provide them the opportunity to network with each other.

2010 fand die Berlin Fashion Week auf dem Bebelplatz statt, der Pixie-Cut feierte sein Revival und ‚boyfriend‘ war fester Bestandteil des Mode-Vokabulars. Auch war es das Gründungsjahr von ­M ALAIKA­R AISS, was auf Suaheli ‚Engel‘ bedeutet. Ihre kosmopolitischen Eltern hätten keinen passenderen Namen für die elfenhafte Erschei­ nung mit der zarten Stimme wählen können. Es ist das familiäre Band, das Malaikas Kollektionen zum Leben erweckt: „Die Ereignisse in der Jugend meiner Eltern, den späten 1960er und 1970er Jahren, sind der Auslöser für unsere Mode.“ Ihre Schwester im Geiste ist Lina, der zweite Kopf hinter ­M ALAIKARAISS. Die beiden Frauen sprechen kaum miteinander, sie verstehen sich blind. „Lina hat sich von Anfang an um die Planung gekümmert, ich bin der kreative Part. Oder anders: Was ich anfange, bringt Lina zu Ende.“ In ihrer Diversität reflektieren die beiden Frauen die Kon­traste ihrer reduzierten und gleichzeitig detailverliebten Designs. Ihre Schnittmenge ist der perfektionistische Anspruch.

Die ‚deutschen Proenza Schouler‘ überlassen nur das Glück dem Zufall – alles andere ist genau durchdacht. Wie trägt sich der neue Armreif beim Geschirrspülen? Die Mitarbeiterin macht den Alltagstest.

Schmuck geht gut. Arm- und Fußreifen, Ohrringe, in Rotgold, mit Lackbeschichtung, an Ideen mangelt es nicht. Bald werden Zebraund Panda-Einhörner die DACH-Märkte erobern. Überrascht sind Malaika und Lina dennoch, z. B. wenn Karoline Herfurth vor der Tür in der Rigaer Strasse steht oder Joy Denalane nach der Show plötzlich Backstage kommt.

Für Herbst/Winter 2015/16 wird es – neben der eigenen Show – auch eine Gemeinschaftspräsentation im Kronprinzenpalais in Berlin geben. „Die Vielfältigkeit in der Kultur, den Menschen, den Bezirken, all das beeinflusst uns. Nicht umsonst sitzen wir in Friedrichshain, es ist authentisch und bürgerlich. Berlin gibt uns Futter“, auch da sind MALAIKARAISS sich einig: „mindestens für die nächsten fünf Jahre.“

Back in 2010, Berlin Fashion Week was held on Bebelplatz, the pixie cut was enjoying a revival and ‘boyfriend’ was a key term in the fashion vernacular. It was also the year that MALAIKARAISS was founded. Malaika means ‘angel’ in Swahili, and the designer’s cosmopolitan parents could not have chosen a more fitting name for this softspoken elfin apparition. It is the family bond that brings Malaika’s collection to life: “The events during my parents’ youth in the late 1960s and 1970s provide the stimulus for our fashion.”

Her kindred spirit, Lina, is the other brain behind MALAIKARAISS. The two women hardly need to speak to each other; they understand one another without words. “From the outset, Lina has taken care of planning while I fill the creative role. Or to put it another way, Lina finishes what I start.” Their diversity is reflected in the contrasts in their understated yet detailed designs. Perfectionism is where the two women overlap.

The ‘German Proenza Schouler’ leaves only luck to chance – everything else is meticulously thought out. How will the new bracelet sit when washing up? A test is carried out. Jewellery is thriving. Bracelets, anklets, earrings, in red gold, with a lacquered finish – there is no lack of ideas. Their zebra and panda unicorns will be conquering the DACH markets in no time. Nevertheless, Malaika and Lina are still surprised when Karoline Herfurth shows up at their door on Rigaer Strasse or when Joy Denalane suddenly comes backstage after the show.

For Autumn/Winter 2015/16, in addition to their own show, there will be a community presentation in Berlin’s Kronprinzenpalais. “The diversity of the culture, people and districts – all of this influences us.

There is a reason for our Friedrichshain location: it is authentic and urban. Berlin gives us nourishment.” And the MALAIKARAISS duo agrees on this point too: “At least for the next five years.”

Synergy of styles

„Der Hinterhof eines Baumarkts neben einer Moschee und einem Punjab Afro Supermarkt.“ Die Bilder, mit denen Bobby Kolade seine Herbst/Winter Kollektion 2015/16 beschreibt, bringen seine kreative Idee auf den Punkt: Stoffe, Formen und Details erzählen Geschichten aus verschiedenen Ecken der Welt.

1987 im Sudan geboren, wuchs Kolade in Uganda auf und studierte später an der Kunsthochschule Weißensee in Berlin. Sein Label gründete er 2013, jetzt zeigt er zum ersten Mal auf der Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin: „Unser Bauchgefühl sagt uns, dass die Zeit richtig ist. Bobby Kolade ist keine One-Man-Show mehr, sondern ein Unternehmen“, so der Designer. Für die Kollektion verarbeitete er handgewebtes Baumwolltuch aus Äthiopien mit englischer Wolle, adap­t ierte Details koreanischer Kostüme und Elemente der Kleidung südafrikanischer Venda-Frauen. Typisch Kolade. Die Premiere in Berlin soll nun Motor sein: „Berlin ist auf dem Fashion-Weltatlas noch ein freches Kind und wir möchten mit der Stadt wachsen. Es gibt derzeit keinen anderen Ort, wo wir mit dem Label lieber wären.“

Born in Sudan in 1987, Kolade grew up in Uganda and later studied at the Weißensee School of Art in Berlin. He founded his label in 2013 and is now exhibiting at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin for the first time. “Our gut feeling tells us that now is the time. Bobby Kolade is not a one-man show; it is a company,” says the designer. For this collection, he used English wool and hand-woven cotton cloth from Ethiopia, adapting aspects of Korean traditional dress and elements of the clothes worn by Southern African Venda women. Typical Kolade. The Berlin premiere is intended to be a driving force for the brand: “On the fashion world atlas, Berlin is still seen as a cheeky child. We want to grow with the city. There is no place we would rather be with the label right now.”

Das italienische Label ist seit seiner Gründung 1999 für seine ex­ quisiten Jeans bekannt. Die perfekte Passform und die klassischen Waschungen begeistern nicht nur Stars wie Ellen Pompeo und Jessica Simpson. Doch die Mode ‚Made in Italy‘ hat mehr zu bieten, denn Designerin Manuela Mariotti entwirft nun für die Frauen-Kollektion auch Seidenblusen, Pullover und Blazer sowie eine Männer- und eine Kinderlinie.

Ihre Mission ist einfach: Die Bluse von ihrer Spießigkeit zu befreien.

Tatsächlich schafft es Aysen Bitzer-Bourak mit ihrem 2001 gegrün­ deten Label, dem konventionellen Kleidungsstück Frische einzu­h au­ chen. Was mit einer Kleiderstange auf der Messe in Paris begann, erfreut sich heute großer Nachfrage in 1.500 Geschäften in 50 Ländern. „Die lockeren Schnitte verleihen Nonchalance“, verrät die De­sig­nerin ihr Geheimnis.

Zum 50-jährigen Jubiläum initiierte das Möbelbausystem USM Haller das ‚project50‘, bei dem sich junge Kreative unter dem Motto ‚Rethink the modular‘ mit Modularität auseinandersetzen. Am 20. Januar 2015 präsentieren USM, Freunde von Freunden und das De­signerduo Bless erste Ergebnisse dieses außergewöhnlichen Zusammenspiels im Berliner Münzstudio. Nach der Vernissage ist die Installation öffentlich zugänglich.

Her mission is simple: to rid the blouse of its stuffy image. And Aysen Bitzer-Bourak’s label, founded in 2001, really does breathe new life into this conventional item of clothing. What started with a clothes rail at a Paris trade show is now in high demand at 1,500 shops in 50 countries.

Her secret? “The loose cuts give an air of nonchalance.”

For its 50th anniversary, USM Haller Modular Furniture Systems launched ‘project50’, a chance for young creatives to “rethink the modular.” On 20 January 2015, USM, Freunde von Freunden and the design duo Bless are presenting the initial results of this unusual collaboration in Berlin’s Münzstudio. After the preview, the installation with be open to the public.

French brand Paul & Joe’s diffusion line exudes the same Parisian chic but with a young, playful touch. Sophie Albou-Mechaly’s fashion label, founded in 1995, is named after her two sons. Two decades later, the brand has 40 stores from Sydney to Paris and is available in luxury department stores Barneys, Harvey Nichols and Harrods. Following collaborations with Aigle and Pierre Cardin for her signature line, the designer was inspired by the comic world of Walt Disney for Paul & Joe Sister. She chose ‘Aristocats’ as the motif for her new Spring/Summer 2015 collection. The result is a complete wardrobe of oversized shirts along with dresses and parkas adorned with the cats Toulouse, Belioz and Marie as well as the street cat Thomas O’Malley.

Gründerin Sophie Albou-Mechaly benannte ihr 1995 gegründetes Fashion-Label nach ihren beiden Söhnen. Nach zwei Jahrzehnten gibt es 40 Stores von Sydney bis Paris und natürlich erhält man die Brand in den Luxus-Kaufhäusern Barney‘s, Harvey Nichols und Harrods.

Nach Kollaborationen mit Aigle und Pierre Cardin für ihre Haupt­ linie, hat es der Designerin für Paul & Joe Sister nun die Comicwelt von Walt Disney angetan. Für die neue Frühjahr/Sommer-Kollektion 2015 hat sie ‚Aristocats‘ als Motiv ausgewählt. Es entstand eine komplette Garderobe von oversized Shirts über Kleider bis zum Parka mit den Kätzchen Toulouse, Belioz und Marie sowie dem Straßenkater Thomas O’Malley.

Fashion rethinks fabric

Je stärker sich industrielle Massenproduktion als Standard durch­ setzt, desto mehr schiebt sich als Gegenpol das traditionelle Handwerk in den Vordergrund. Wer es sich leisten kann, wählt Kleidung, die ‚wie früher‘ hergestellt wurde. Dieser Qualitätsanspruch beginnt schon beim Material. Der Kunde hat ein geschärftes Materialbewusstsein entwickelt, auf das die Hersteller reagieren. In der Rückbe­sinnung auf alte Tugenden gilt die Faustregel: Naturfaser ist gut, Kunstfaser ist schlecht. So wie im Möbeldesign Kunststofffurnier nicht mit ‚echtem‘ Vollholz kon­k ur­rieren kann, so hält sich auch in der Mode der Glaube an die überlegene Wertigkeit der Naturfasern. Heute erreicht der Na­ turfaser-Kult einen neuen Höhepunkt. Das 50 Jahre alte Wool­­ markQualitätssiegel der Woolmark Company ist so populär wie nie. Mit ihrer aktuellen ‚Campaign for Wool‘ reagiert die Company auf das ge­ steigerte Interesse an Hintergrundwissen zur Wolle. Auf die Spitze treibt den Kult japanisches Denim, das auf Webstühlen aus der Zeit vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg hergestellt wird. Mit diesen Selvedge-Jeans besetzen kleine Firmen wie Indigofera aus Schweden längst eine lukra­ tive Nische.

The more industrial mass production is seen as the norm, the more its antithesis, traditional craftsmanship, pushes itself to the fore. Those who can afford it choose clothing made ‘ like it used to be.’ This demand for quality starts with the fabric. Consumers have developed a keen awareness of materials and manufacturers are responding. In this return to traditional values, the old rule of thumb applies: natural fibres are good and artificial fibres are bad. In furniture design, an artificial veneer cannot compete with ‘real’ solid wood and the fashion industry clings to the superior value of natural fibres too. Today, the cult of natural fibre is reaching a new high point. The 50-year-old Woolmark quality label from the Woolmark Company is more popular than ever; the business is now running the Campaign for Wool in response to the increased demand for information. Japanese denim is taking the cult to its limits, using looms from before the Second World War. Small firms like Indigofera of Sweden have long occupied a lucrative niche with their selvedge jeans.

Gewinner: recyceltes Polyester. Am längsten verwendet Pata­ gonia, der Primus des ressourcenschonenden Ma­ terialeinsatzes, Stoff aus recycelten PET-Flaschen, seit 1993. Jüngster Zugang beim PET-FlaschenRecycling wird 2015 das neue Taschenlabel AEP sein, das darüber hinaus nur mit Produzenten kollaboriert, denen das Bluesign-Umweltsiegel verliehen wurde. Seit Herbst 2014 setzt G-Star mit der Kollektion ‚Raw for the Ocean‘ auf ‚Bionic‘-Garn. Wie 20 weitere Modemarken (da­ runter Dickschiffe wie H&M oder Uniqlo) betei­ ligt sich G-Star auch an dem ‚Detox‘-Programm von Greenpeace, das die Marken dazu verpflich­ tet, ihre Textil-Produktion zu entgiften. Stoff aus Plastikflaschen ist gut, Färbemethoden von Naturstoffen sind schlecht: Alte Gewissheiten stehen Kopf. Am schönsten verbildlicht Puma, die auch am ‚Detox‘-Programm beteiligt sind, das neue Miteinander von Natur- und Kunstfa­ ser. Die Kooperation von Puma mit Mihara Yasu­ ­ hiro krönt ein traditioneller Leder-Brogue mit Sneaker-Pump-Aufsatz aus offensivem Voll­ plastik. So viel Spaß kann das kritische Materi­ albewusstsein machen.

In 2015, the new bag label AEP will become the latest brand to adopt PET bottle recycling. What is more, AEP only collaborates with manufacturers with the Bluesign environmental seal. As of autumn 2014, G-Star has been focusing on Bionic yarn with its ‘Raw for the Oceans’ collection. If fabric made from plastic bottles is good and methods for dyeing natural fabrics are bad, the old rules no longer apply.

Puma, also involved in the Detox programme, illustrates most beautifully how natural and artificial fibres can coexist. In collaboration with ­Mihara Yasuhiro, it has produced a traditional leather brogue adorned with a sneaker pump in aggressive plastic. That’s how much fun a critical awareness of materials can be.

The Gift of Anatolia

Die Aufrechterhaltung alter Werte und traditioneller Webkunst von Kelims ist bei Wild Heart Free Soul ein Selbstverständnis. „Bei uns findet man Kelims, die wir von Einheimischen aus Anatolien beziehen.

Nach gründlicher Aufbereitung vor Ort verkaufen wir sie bei uns im Atelier“, erklären die Gründerinnen Beyza und Lena von Wild Heart Free Soul. Liebevoll, natürlich und leidenschaftlich betreiben die Mädels ihr gemütliches Mitte-Atelier mit immer wiederkehrenden Bazaren, auf denen man für einen kurzen Moment in die Welt Anatoliens eintaucht. Die Nase vom milden Duft des Schwarztees umgeben, werden die Augen von bunt gewebten Kissen, Teppichen und Tüchern beglückt.

Kelims sind handgewebte Teppiche, die ihren Ursprung vorwiegend in Anatolien, Persien und Kaukasien haben. Die aus Wolle bestehenden Bodenbeläge wurden vor Jahrzehnten in stundenlanger, traditioneller Webkunst von Frauenhand in den unterschiedlichsten Farben und Dessins gefertigt. So entstehen Farbkombinationen wie beispielsweise aus Rot- und Blau-Tönen, die für die Herkunft Westanatoliens stehen, ein hoher Gelbanteil ist typisch für Modelle aus Kappadokien – jeder Nomadenstamm besitzt sein eigenes Muster. Gegenwärtig zählen 100 Jahre alte Kelims auf internationalen Kunstmärkten zu wahren Sammlerstücken.

Im hippen Kreuzberger Hinterhof sind die Kimlayani Teppiche in einem schicken Showroom vorzufinden. Mondän breiten sie sich im anmutig großen Atelier aus. Mit nicht weniger Leidenschaft betreiben Philippe und Richard ihr junges Unternehmen: Beim Kauf eines Kimlayani Teppichs kann der Kunde zwischen zwei Kollektionen wählen. „Wir beziehen unsere 60 bis 80 Jahre alten Garne aus Anatolien, doch der entscheidende Unterschied liegt darin, dass wir sie entknüpfen oder neu einfärben lassen“, so die Gründer.

Beide Unternehmen legen die Teppiche zum Bleichen in die kräftige, türkische Sonne und reinigen sie anschließend auf natürliche Weise.

Früher schmückten sie die Zelte orientalischer Nomadenvölker, heute verschönern sie deutsche Großstadt-Wohnungen.

Preserving ancient values and the traditional art of kilim weaving is what Wild Heart Free Soul is all about. “We source our kilims from Anatolian people who make the products that we then sell in our atelier,” explain Wild Heart Free Soul founders Beyza and Lena. They have a loving, natural and passionate approach to running their cosy Berlin Mitte atelier, where a succession of recurring bazaars allow you to immerse yourself momentarily in the Anatolian world. The mild scent of black tea fills your nostrils while colourful woven cushions, rugs and scarves delight your eyes.

Kilims are hand-woven rugs that originate predominantly in Anatolia, Persia and Caucasia. Women spent hours weaving to create these woolen floor coverings in the widest range of colours and patterns.

A combination of red and blue tones is mostly seen on carpets of western Anatolian origin while a large amount of yellow is typical of Cappadocian styles – every nomadic tribe has its own pattern. These days, 100-year-old kilims are considered real collectors’ items on the inter­ national art market.

Kimlayani rugs are to be found in a chic showroom, tucked away in a hip Kreuzberg courtyard. They are spread out in a sophisticated manner across a gracefully large atelier. Philippe and Richard also run their young company with great passion; when purchasing a Kimlayani carpet, there are two collections to choose from. “We source our 60- to 80-year-old yarns from Anatolia, but the key difference is that we unknot them or re-dye them,” say the founders.

Both companies put the rugs out to fade in the powerful Turkish sun and clean them afterwards in a natural way. In earlier times, these rugs were used to decorate the tents of Oriental nomadic people; today, they add an element of beauty to German city flats.

Irene Luft: Precision and Lightness Ihr Prêt-à-porter-Label gründete Irene Luft zwar erst 2008 in München, doch schon kurze Zeit später schwebten Germany’s Next Top­ models in ihren verführerischen Roben für ein Fotoshooting im Heißluftballon über den TV-Bildschirm. Die Designerin studierte an der Deutschen Meisterschule für Mode sowie an der Akademie für Mode & Design in München und so bestechen die handgefertigen Abendkleider der gelernten Couture-Schneiderin durch Präzision und Leichtigkeit sowie luxuriöse Materialien wie Plauener Spitze und Leder.

Irene Luft founded her Munich ready-to-wear label in 2008, though it didn’t take long for fame to follow: contestants on ‘Germany’s Next Top Model’ donned her alluring gowns for a lofty photo shoot in a hot air balloon. The designer studied at the Deutsche Meisterschule für Mode (German Masters’ School for Fashion) as well as the Academy of ­Fashion and Design in Munich. Levi’s Made & Crafted: The Classics of the Future Mit der Premiumlinie ‚Made & Crafted‘ besinnt sich Levi’s auf seine Wurzeln: Nämlich Kleidungsstücke zu entwerfen, die Klassiker von morgen sind. Die Kollektion besticht nicht nur durch aufwendige Schnitte, sondern auch durch hochwertige Materialien. Der Denim wird in Amerika und Japan gewebt und das Leder von Hand in Italien gewachst. Die Produktion einzelner Stücke kann mehrere Tage in Anspruch nehmen und findet teilweise in Handarbeit statt, um die hohe Qualität zu garantieren. Viel Wert wird auf die Verwendung von natürlichen Farben wie echtem Indigo gelegt sowie die fast schon obsessive Liebe zum Detail. Die Herbst/Winter-Kollektion 2015/16 besticht durch eine Abstraktion von Punk mit schlichten, aber hervorstechenden Pieces von Lederjacken bis Jeans.

Reserved has achieved a real coup with their latest campaign: the Polish fashion brand has managed to get the Jagger sisters Georgia May and Lizzy in front of the camera, along with their legendary mother Jerry Hall, for the first time. Three very big names indeed. And for our fashion-savvy neighbours on the other side of the Oder, this is something really special. After all, Poland has been considered the France of the Eastern bloc since socialist times. The design scene and the textile industry are experiencing a boom. No wonder brands are finally spilling over into Western Europe. Reserved is still a relatively unknown name in Germany but it is part of the cityscape in Poland and throughout Eastern Europe: there are already 413 branches in 13 countries. Now the brand is entering the German market, with a Berlin store on Tauentzien set to join the existing stores in Recklinghausen, Stuttgart, Bremen and Hanover this year. Leipzig will follow.

Qatar, Paris, Milan and London are all on the agenda too. A breath of fresh air for the world’s fast-fashion stores.
