Berlin is a true fashion capital, with more than 3,500 fashion businesses, some 800 designers and labels, and a number of renowned fashion academies. Not to mention exceptional events like Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin, ­taking place this July for the 17th time.

Modemetropole Berlin: Dafür stehen inzwischen über 3.500 Modeunternehmen, rund 800 Designer und Labels sowie gleich mehrere ­renommierte Modeschulen. Und dafür stehen herausragende Events wie die Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin, die in diesem Juli bereits ihre 17. Auflage erlebt.

Längst haben sich die zahlreichen Messe­ formate, Catwalk-Schauen und Veranstaltungen im Rahmen der Berlin Fashion Week zum ­A nziehungspunkt der internationalen Modewelt entwickelt. Hier trifft man sich, um die neuen Trends und Kollektionen etablierter Marken wie auch junger Berliner Labels zu ­b egutachten.

Technische Bausteine sind so kleinteilig, anpassungsfähig und robust geworden, dass sie für Modedesigner immer interessanter werden. Praktischer Nutzen und ästhetischer Gewinn gehen eine revolutionäre Symbiose ein.

Was früher der Perlmuttknopf war, ist heute der EKG-Kragen, die Solarzelle oder der 3DDruck. Technologische Entwicklungen haben das nächste Level erreicht – und mit ihnen die Kleidung. So erlebt Ralph Laurens klassisches Tennis-Shirt als ‚Polo Tech Shirt‘ eine zeitgemäße Aufwertung. Von außen unsichtbar, erstellt eine im Kragen versteckte Elektronik ein EKG des Trägers. Pauline van Dongen ­integriert in ihre T-Shirts Solarzellen, mit denen man das Smartphone aufladen kann. Firmen wie Ringly, Ear-O-Smart oder die Kooperation von Swarovski mit Misfit nutzen Ringe und Armreifen als Schnittstelle zum Smartphone. Ästhetik und Technik treiben sich in der Fashion-Tech gegenseitig an. Aber natürlich ist die Fashion-Tech manchmal auch nur er­ ­ frischend albern. An Exciting Collaboration Between FASHION, TECH and RETAIL

Neben der Kooperation mit Asos ist ElektroCouture noch ein weiterer Coup gelungen. Ihre Mode wird im Rahmen der ‚IT Couture Fashion & Technology Exhibition‘ von Microsoft Berlin in ‚The Digital Eatery‘, Unter den Linden 17, gezeigt, außerdem wird Gründerin Lisa Lang beim ‚Wearable Technology‘-Panel ‚IT Couture – fashion goes digital!’ von Microsoft Berlin auf dem Podium sitzen. „Lisa Lang verbindet in ihrer Marke auf ausgezeichnete Weise Fashion und Technologie. Damit steht sie für die aktuelle Entwicklung und das große Potenzial der Branche, gerade hier in Berlin“, so Christoph Seitz, Microsoft Berlin Center Lead.

Die Digitalisierung habe auch die Modeindustrie erreicht. Start-ups würden neue Geschäftsmodelle mit Smart Wearables, Sensoren und Beacons oder Virtual Shopping Assistants zeigen. Microsoft unterstütze hier mit seinem breiten Technologieangebot auf vielfältige Weise, so Seitz weiter.

Diese interdisziplinäre Zusammenarbeit von mehreren Partnern ist zukunftsweisend und zeigt, wohin der Trend geht. Immerhin hat Yoox den Online-Shop Net-a-Porter gekauft, die US-Kaufhauskette Neiman Marcus hat Mytheresa erworben und Zalando hat die Bread & Butter übernommen und plant nun Festivals. Insofern darf man gespannt sein, was aus der Zusammenarbeit von ElektroCouture, Microsoft und Asos noch erwächst.

For the first time, major e-commerce platform Asos will be presenting a German designer in the area of fashion tech. The online marketplace will be featuring the Autumn/Winter 2015 collection of the Elektro­ Couture label by Lisa Lang as one of its up-and-coming designers. ­ElektroCouture creates a luminous fashion statement in more ways than one. The wearables are an elegant harmony of technology and fashion, like scarves that integrate delicate strings of softly glowing lights, charged by a USB connection and yet nonetheless washable. The collection also ­includes neoprene jackets and dresses that light up and Art Deco-style necklaces with LED accents that shine in a sapphire blue.

In addition to the collaboration with Asos, ElektroCouture has another victory under its belt: the brand is being shown in the ‘IT Couture’ exhibit at Microsoft’s ‘Digital Eatery’ on Unter den Linden 17. What’s more, founder Lisa Lang will be part of a wearable technology panel at Microsoft.

“Lisa Lang’s line is an excellent example of the interconnectivity of fashion and technology. This puts her at the forefront of current developments and illustrates the great potential in this industry, right here in Berlin,” says Christoph Seitz of Microsoft Berlin Center Lead. Digitalization has reached the fashion industry. Startups are introducing new business models with smart wearables, sensors, beacons, and virtual shopping assistants. Microsoft is committed to being a player in this growth with a wide range of technological tools, Seitz adds.

The interdisciplinary collaboration between a mix of partners is a forwardthinking strategy and an indication of where the next trends will be. After all, Yoox bought online shop Net-a-Porter, American department store chain Neiman Marcus acquired Mytheresa, and Zalando purchased Bread & Butter and is now planning festivals. With that in mind, the partnership between ElectroCouture, Microsoft, and Asos promises exciting things.

What opportunities are waiting to be tapped into in the new wearables segment? Which trends will catch on in the digital marketing and distribution of fashion? This year’s third #FASHIONTECH BERLIN conference will once again be presenting forward-thinking digital projects that define the future of fashion. The first conference of its kind in Germany, the event was established by PREMIUM, SEEK and re:publica to address the increasingly relevant overlap between fashion and technology.

Following a kickoff event in January and a subsequent event during this May’s re:publica, #FASHIONTECH BERLIN will be held during ­B erlin Fashion Week with an exciting mix of big-name brands, digital startups, experts from across the fashion industry, and up-and-coming designers. ­Katharina Bredies from the Design Research Lab of Berlin's University of the Arts will present new materials, Dutch fashion i­ nnovator Anouk ­W ipprecht will discuss the synthesis of fashion and ­technology, and designer H ­ ristiyana Vucheva of VOJD Studios will present 3Dprinted jewelry. Fashion IN GERM Design als Kulturgut wird in Deutschland immer noch zu wenig wahrgenommen. Ein Grund: Die Modebranche verfügte bislang über keine eigene Lobby. Mit der Gründung des Fashion Council Germany wurde diese Lücke jetzt geschlossen.

Der Verband will – ähnlich wie das British Fashion Council – das kreative Potenzial stärken und sich für das deutsche Modedesign einsetzen. Schließlich mangelt es Deutschland nicht an Talenten, sondern eher an einem Verständnis dafür, dass die Förderung der Mode ‚made in Germany‘ im Interesse aller ist. Das soll sich jetzt ändern.

Das Fashion Council Germany, in dem Experten aus verschiedenen Bereichen der Modebranche erstmals gemeinsam agieren, will sich als Schnittstelle zwischen Kreativszene und Politik positionieren. Grundsätzlich geht es darum, dass die Creative Industries als Wirtschaftsfaktor wahrgenommen und gefördert werden.

Insbesondere bietet das Fashion Council Germany Förderprogramme für den Nachwuchs, der in Zeiten der fortschreitenden Digitalisierung der Mode vor neue Herausforderungen gestellt wird. Auch im Hinblick auf diese künftige Fusion von Design und Technik will das Fashion Council Germany unterstützend tätig sein. Darüber hinaus bieten Plattformen wie Der Berliner Mode Salon jungen Designern eine Bühne. Internationalisierung sowie enger Austausch mit den entsprechenden Interessenvertretungen im Ausland sind dabei wichtige Faktoren und ein wertvoller Beitrag zur Wahrnehmungssteigerung deutscher Mode auch über die eigenen Landesgrenzen hinaus.

ashion ‘mADE RMANY’ The cultural merits of design have consistently been undervalued in Germany. One reason why: until now, the fashion industry has lacked its own lobby. The founding of the Fashion Council Germany closes this gap.

The association will work to strengthen local creative potential and advocate for German fashion design, similarly to the British Fashion Council. After all, Germany has plenty of talent at its disposal, but what has been missing until now is the conviction that promoting ‘made in Germany’ fashion has widespread benefits for all. It’s time for that to change.

The Fashion Council Germany will bring together experts from across all segments of the fashion industry, lobbying strategically at the intersection of the creative scene and politics. The fundamental goal is to increase recognition of the economic potential of the creative industries.

In particular, the Fashion Council Germany will offer support and subsidies for the up-and-coming talents who are ­facing a new set of challenges due to the digitalization of the fashion industry. This ever-increasing fusion between ­d esign and technology is another focus of the council’s sponsorship work. Platforms like Der Berlin Mode Salon are ­another option for young designers seeking a stage. International growth and strong working relationships with overseas contacts are key factors to strengthening the impact that German fashion can have outside its borders.

Zac Posen Patron of the fashion talent award ‘Designer for Tomorrow 2015’ by Peek & Cloppenburg

Zac Posen – mit nur 16 Jahren besuchte er bereits die Parsons School of Design in New York, absolvierte Praktika in Design-Studios und zog schließlich für ein Studium am renommierten Central Saint Martins College nach London. Aus eigener Erfahrung weiß der Designer um die Wichtigkeit eines funktionierenden Netzwerkes sowie inspirierender Mentoren. Gemeinsam mit der Jury wählte der New Yorker Designer die Top 5 aus allen eingegangenen Bewerbern und kürt am 9. Juli im Rahmen der Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin den ‚Designer for Tomorrow 2015‘.

Was ist Ihrer Ansicht nach die Essenz von gutem Design?

Die Passform ist das A und O. Jeder sollte beim Kauf nach perfekt sitzenden Kleidungsstücken Ausschau halten. Die Farbwahl ist sehr persönlich: Sie muss nicht nur mit dem Hautton harmonieren, son­dern auch die Augen zum Strahlen bringen. Mein Ratschlag: Haben Sie keine Angst, neue Styles oder Ausschnittformen auszuprobieren.

Es ist immer spannend, mit Schnittkonstruktionen zu experimentieren.

Was macht einen erfolgreichen Designer aus?

Seine Vision.

Die Förderung von aufstrebenden Nachwuchstalenten beginnt mit …?

Förderung ist entscheidend in der Modebranche. Ich hatte das Glück, in meinem Leben einige Menschen um mich zu haben, die mir ver­schiedene Fertigkeiten beigebracht und mein Auge geschult haben.

Etwas von diesem Glück würde ich gerne an Nachwuchsdesigner zurückgeben.

Ihre beste Inspirationsquelle ist?

Ich finde überall Anregungen. So halte ich stets die Augen nach Dingen auf, die meine Aufmerksamkeit wecken. Für mich ist die Natur eine großartige Inspirationsquelle – ob es Blumen sind, das Wetter oder die Straßen einer Stadt. Ich verbringe sehr viel Zeit in meinem Designstudio, bin bei jeder Anprobe mit dabei und liebe es, an einem ruhigen Samstagmorgen in meinem Büro zu sein.

Welche Eigenschaften sind für Nachwuchstalente entscheidend, um in der Modebranche erfolgreich zu sein?

Das Modegeschäft ist eine Ehe zwischen Kunst und Kommerz und muss dementsprechend angegangen werden. Ausdauer ist entscheidend für den langfristigen Markenerfolg. Die wertvollste Fähigkeit ist es, den Kunden, für den man entwirft, zu verstehen.

Zac Posen attended New York’s Parsons School of Design at 16 and interned with design studios before moving to London to study at the renowned Central Saint Martins college. Experience taught him the importance of having both a strong network and inspiring mentors.

Together with the jury, Posen selected the top 5 finalists of the ‘Designer for Tomorrow 2015’ award and will crown the winner on July 9 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin.

In your opinion, what is the essence of great design?

Fit is paramount. A great fitting garment is what every shopper should look for. The color choice is very personal; it has to complement the skin tone as well as brighten the eyes. My advice would be to never be afraid to try new styles or necklines, it is always exciting to experiment with constructions.

What constitutes an effective designer?

Their vision.

Support up-and-coming fashion talents starts with ...?

Nurturing is key in the fashion industry. I was lucky enough to have had several people in my life that taught me different skills and perfected my eye. I would like to give back to up-and-coming designers in the same capacity.

Your favorite source of inspiration is?

I find inspiration everywhere. I always keep my eyes peeled for some­thing that catches my attention: I deem nature to be a great source of inspiration, from flowers to the weather to the city streets. I spend a great amount of time in my design studio, I’m present at every fitting, and I love to be in my office on a quiet Saturday morning.

Which qualities are essential for an up-and-coming designer in order to be successful in the fashion industry?

The business of fashion is a marriage between art and commerce and should be approached as such. Endurance is pivotal for the long-run brand success and understanding the customer you design for is the most valuable skill.

Guter Tag!

Seine Eltern stammen aus Adana, der fünftgrößten Stadt des Landes, die näher an Syrien als an der Mode liegt. Dementsprechend schwer taten sie sich mit der Entscheidung ihres Sohnes, Modedesigner zu werden. Der Vater, ein Bauunternehmer, die Mutter, Hausfrau, ein Zwillingsbruder, der im Bauunternehmen des Vaters tätig ist, und drei Schwestern – letztendlich stehen sie aber hinter ihm, haben seine ­letzte Modenschau auf der Fashion Week in Istanbul besucht.

Seine 11. Kollektion präsentiert Emre in dieser Saison zum ersten Mal in Berlin. Es läuft gut für ihn, seit seine Lederentwürfe in Zusammenarbeit mit DTG (Turkish Leather Brands) auf acht Seiten in der türkischen Vogue gefeatured wurden. In Florenz auf der Pitti Uomo, in Mailand beim Nobelkaufhaus La Rinascente – Emres Leder prangte in den Vitrinen, sein Name in der Presse. Glück und Hilfe hatte er.

Eine der größten türkischen Modeorganisationen, die ITKIB, stand Emre in den Anfangsjahren zur Seite.

Emres Kleider sind für den Mann-Mann, eher nix für androgyne ­Typen. Seine Kunden sieht er ‚stark‘, ‚maskulin‘ und vor allem ‚chic‘. ­Dieses Jahr verbindet er mit seinen Designs die große Liebe – die Liebe zu allem, was man bedrucken kann. „Es wird eine dynamische, farbenfrohe, unterhaltsame Kollektion”, verrät Emre und ergänzt: „Am Ende des Tages braucht man Struktur, Willensstärke und eine Vision.” Die von Emre Erdemoğlu ist es, eine weltweite Marke aufzubauen.

When Emre Erdemoğlu wakes up in the morning, the designer’s plans for the day are already one night old. Structure is his oxygen. Emre has earned a diploma from Dokuz Eylül University in Izmir and racked up work experience with Turkish designer Cemil İpekçi and with online retailer Damat Tween. He’s also worked as a stylist and taught fashion design at the İMA fashion academy in his adopted hometown of Istanbul. “We’re an evolving people, constantly improving ourselves,” says Emre of his Turkish compatriots. He likens Istanbul to a cosmopolite that connects all people. And yet Istanbul does not stand for all of Turkey, just as Emre does not represent all Turks.

His parents come from Adana, the fifth-largest city in the land, closer to Syria than it is to fashion. They didn’t exactly take their son’s decision to become a designer lightly, the father in the construction business and the housewife mother, plus a twin brother who works with the father in construction and three sisters. Ultimately, however, the family came around to support him, and even attended his last show at Istanbul’s Fashion Week.

This season, Emre will be presenting his 11th collection in Berlin for the first time. Ever since his leather designs, a collaboration with DTG (Turkish Leather Brands), were featured across eight pages in Vogue Turkey, his career has been on the up and up. From Pitti Uomo in ­F lorence to Milan’s exclusive La Rinascente department store to the international press, Emre’s leather creations are making waves. He has both luck and his supporters to thank – one of Turkey’s biggest fashion organizations, the ITKIB, was there to give his early career a nudge.

Emre’s pieces are made for the real man’s man, not the androgynous types. He describes his clientele as ‘strong,’ ‘masculine’ and above all ‘chic.’ This year, his designs bear the hallmark of love – love of printing, that is. “It’s a dynamic, colorful, and amusing collection,” he reveals, before adding, “At the end of the day, we need structure, willpower, and a vision.” His is clear: to build a brand that can take on the world.

Neopren ist ein sperriges Material, ihm Sex-Appeal einzuhauchen scheint eine nahezu unmögliche Mode-Aufgabe. Das neue Berliner Label Motherwow hat sich jedoch genau das zur Aufgabe gemacht – und das Ergebnis zaubert einem ein ‚Wow’ auf die Lippen. „Neopren ist ein faszinierendes Material“, schwärmt Nicole ­K amper, die mit ihrer dänischen Geschäftspartnerin Malene Sjölund das L abel gründete. Neopren forme die Figur, ohne dass man dabei ­ ­B ewegungsfreiheit einbüße, dabei sei es fest und gleichzeitig flexibel.

Für ihre Entwürfe verwenden die beiden 100 Prozent ChloroprenKautschuk, was eine enorme Herausforderung bei der Verarbeitung darstellt. „Es bedarf spezieller Techniken und viel Erfahrung“, ­erklärt Nicole. Trotz der Herausforderung gelang es dem Duo atemberaubende Stücke zu kreieren, die sich wie eine zweite Haut an den Körper schmiegen und seiner Trägerin das Aussehen einer anmutigen Amazone verleihen. „Als ich meine Entwürfe das erste Mal im Club anhatte, sagte eine Frau mit bewunderndem Blick ‚Wow‘ zu mir“, erinnert sich Nicole lachend.

Neoprene is an unwieldy material and making it look sexy is an almost impossible task. But that is exactly what the new Berlin label Motherwow set out to do – and the results are stunning.

“Neoprene is a fascinating material,” raves Nicole Kamper, who founded the label with her Danish business partner Malene Sjölund.

Neoprene sculpts the wearer’s figure without taking away their freedom of movement, she explains, and it is simultaneously firm and flexible. The pair uses 100 % polychloroprene for their designs, which is an enormous challenge to work with. “You need special techniques and a lot of experience,” explains Nicole. Despite this challenge, the duo has managed to create breathtaking pieces that feel like a second skin and give the wearer a graceful Amazon look. “When I wore my designs in a club for the first time, a woman gave me an admiring glance and said ‘Wow’,” remembers Nicole with a laugh.

Matteo Lamandini

Finding Inspiration

in the Homeless

Ursprünglich wollte Matteo Lamandini Wirtschaft studieren. „Ich war fasziniert vom Style der Business-Menschen“, gesteht der 25jährige Italiener. Da es ihm aber mehr um Businessanzüge, als um Buchhaltung ging, absolvierte er lieber eine Mode-Ausbildung am Mailänder Istituto Marangoni und arbeitete bei Marni. Anzüge ­b eschäftigen ihn jedoch immer noch, wie man an seiner ­Kollektion ‚Zoot Suits‘ sah, mit der er 2014 den ‚Designer for Tomorrow‘-Award gewann. Seine Inspiration waren neben den Herrenanzügen der Swing-Ära der 1940er Jahre auch Obdachlose. „Ich bin fasziniert vom ihrem Kleidungsstil“, erklärt Lamandini. Ihr Mix von Stoffen und Mustern, das Layering und die Oversized-Klamotten haben seine Entwürfe stark geprägt. Nun präsentiert der Schützling von Tommy Hilfiger bei der Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin seine neue Kollektion. Wieder steht der Anzug im Mittelpunkt, doch für ‚Tristesse Contemporaine‘ ließ er sich von alten Fotografien von amerikanischen Kids und ihren Klamotten inspirieren. „Meine Entwürfe werden eine ironische Antwort auf die heutige Jugend mit ihrem Gefühl für Kummer geben“, erklärt er vieldeutig.

Originally, Matteo Lamandini’s plan was to study economics. “I was fascinated by the style of business people,” the 25-year-old Italian confesses. Because he was ultimately more interested in business suits than bookkeeping, however, he ended up studying fashion at Milan’s Istituto Marangoni and working at Marni. Suits still remain a passion, which is clear with just a glance at the ‘Zoot Suits’ collection that won him the ‘Designer for Tomorrow’ award in 2014. He drew inspiration not only from the suits men wore during the 1940s swing era, but also from homeless people. “I am fascinated by their style of dress,” explains Lamandini. Their mixing of fabrics and patterns and use of layering and oversized items has had a strong influence on his designs. This season, the protégé of Tommy Hilfiger will be presenting his new ‘Tristesse Contemporaine’ collection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin. Once again, the suit is the star of the collection, this time ­inspired by old photos of American kids and their style of dress. “My pieces provide an ironic response to the youth of today and their sense for sorrow,” Lamandini explains enigmatically.

Bernd Schürmann ist so jemand. Besonders, wenn er von seiner ­m ittler­weile 30 Jahre andauernden Karriere im Modebusiness spricht. Ob es um Z obel mit einem Einkaufspreis von 150.000 Dollar geht oder um ­ ­s eine Begeisterung über die Dries Van Noten Installation bei ­A ndreas Murkudis in Berlin.

Die Vertriebsagentur Bernd Schürmann betreut seit 2003 internationale Kunden mit Luxusmarken wie Pierre Balmain, Issa, Cacharel oder Barbara Bui. Seit Kurzem fokussiert sich Schürmann ganz auf den Standort Hauptstadt und vergrößert die Räumlichkeiten in der wunderschönen historischen Stadtvilla auf der Meinekestrasse stetig. „Berlin war immer meine große Liebe“, schwärmt er. „Die Mode wird definitiv hier stattfinden in den nächsten Jahren! Wir haben bis zur letzten Saison noch in Düsseldorf ausgestellt, aber bereits vor der Messe entschieden, dass es das letzte Mal war.“ Und diese Entscheidung traf Bernd Schürmann nicht allein: „Ich habe meine Kunden angerufen und gefragt, was sie zu Berlin sagen – 99 % waren begeistert.“ Aus dieser Kundennähe ist zusammen mit Nancy Ernst, Director of Sales, die Idee entstanden, das eigene Label zu gründen. Sly 010 startete 2010 mit 30 Seidenblusen und war von der ersten Stunde an profitabel – nicht zuletzt aufgrund von Schürmanns Erfahrung mit Produkt-Management, Warenbeschaffung und Design, die er sich über Jahre auf Stationen im Handel, bei Marken und im eigenen Unternehmen erarbeitete. „Durch unsere Vertriebserfahrung wussten wir einfach, was Kundinnen in welchem Land wollen. Die Ausrichtung von Sly 010 war von Anfang an international.“ Die starke DNA spiegelt sich auch in der Frühjahr/Sommer 2016 Kollektion wider: Ein wenig Seventies Flair, viel Rock ’n’ Roll, Leder, Seide, Feminität, Coolness.

Für den Modestandort Berlin sind Bernd Schürmann und seine Kunden eine Bereicherung. Und an dieser arbeitet er mit seinem Team stetig. Sein Rezept? „Qualität funktioniert“, erklärt Schürmann. „Wir setzen auf mehr Design, mehr Erstlinien, mehr internationale Marken. Das ist unser Konzept und da sind wir erfolgreich.“ Weitere Anekdoten sind uns also sicher.

They are few and far between – people whom you could listen to for hours on end, who never seem to run out of anecdotes and who have a clever, skilful and reflective way of talking about things. Bernd Schürmann is one such person. Especially when he is talking about his career in fashion, which spans 30 years and is still ongoing. From sable at a cost of 150,000 USD to his enthusiasm for the Dries Van Noten installation at Andrea Murkudis in Berlin, there is plenty for him to talk about.

The Bernd Schürmann distribution agency has been representing international clients, including luxury brands such as Pierre Balmain, Issa, Cacharel and Barbara Bui, since 2003. More recently, Schürmann has been focussing his energies on Berlin and is continuously expanding the premises within the beautiful, historic Stadtvilla on Meinekestrasse.

“Berlin was always my true love,” he raves. “Fashion will definitely be happening here in the years to come! We were still exhibiting in Düsseldorf until last season, but we decided before the trade show that that would be the last time.” And Bernd Schürmann was not alone in making this decision: “I called my clients and asked them what they thought of Berlin – 99 % were thrilled.”

Out of this close connection to the clientele came the idea to strike out and found his own labels, together with Nancy Ernst, the director of sales. Sly 010 was launched in 2010 with a line of 30 silk blouses and was profitable from the very beginning – not least because of Schürmann’s experience of product management, procurement and design, acquired over the years in various positions in retail, with brands and in his own company. “Thanks to our distribution experience, we just knew what customers in each country wanted. Sly 010 had an international bias from the word go.” The brand’s strong identity is also reflected in its Spring/Summer 2016 collection: a bit of seventies’ flair, a lot of rock ‘n’ roll, leather, silk, femininity and coolness.

Bernd Schürmann and his clients are an asset to Berlin as a fashion destination. And he and his team work tirelessly for these clients. His secret? “Quality works,” explains Schürmann. “Our focus is on more design, more first lines, and more international brands. This is our concept and this is where we are successful.” There are sure to be more anecdotes to come.

Alles andere als erwartet, doch unverhofft kommt oft: Der Berliner Modedesigner Patrick Mohr und der amerikanische Nickelodeon-Star SpongeBob Schwammkopf verbindet diesen Sommer mehr als nur der eigensinnige Kopf und die Liebe für Spaß, Freiheit und Frieden. Stolz gaben die beiden im Juni dieses Sommers die Kooperation einer gemeinsamen Mode-Kollektion bekannt. Unter dem Titel ‚Patrick loves SpongeBob by PM‘ charakterisiert sich diese vor allem durch eines – Authentizität. Fröhlichkeit und das Streben nach kreativer Entfaltung, so Patrick Mohr, seien die wichtigsten Attribute bei der Entwicklung der Kollektion gewesen. Die wichtigsten Kleidungsstücke, so der Designer, seien der Jumpsuit und das Crop-Top. Sein Anspruch an die Kollektion war es, SpongeBobs Heimat Bikini Bottom mit seinem Marken­ zeichen zu kombinieren: geometrischen Formen. Erweitert wird die Kollektion durch eine Accessoires- und Fashion-Items-Linie, zu der Caps, Socken und Sweater, die in Zusammenarbeit mit Starter Black Label entstanden sind, gehören. Diese doch unerwartete Kooperation wird auf der internationalen Modemesse PREMIUM präsentiert und ist ab Frühjahr/Sommer 2016 in Europa und den USA erhältlich.

It was anything but expected. Then again, don’t things often happen when you least expect them? This summer, Berlin fashion designer ­Patrick Mohr and American Nickelodeon star SpongeBob SquarePants will be sharing not only an opinionated streak and a love of fun, freedom, and peacefulness, but also a new fashion collaboration that was just ­announced in June. Titled ‘Patrick loves SpongeBob by PM,’ the collection is characterized by one hallmark above all: authenticity.

According to the Berlin designer, merriment and the striving for creative development were the most important qualities in the development of the collection. The most important items are the jumpsuit and crop top, he says. His aim for the collection was to bring SpongeBob’s underwater home of Bikini Bottom alive using his brand’s own signature feature: geometric shapes. Rounding out the collection are accessories and fashion items such as caps, socks, and sweaters, created together with the Starter Black Label. This unexpected collaboration will be shown at the PREMIUM i­nternational fashion trade show and will be available in both Europe and the United States in the Spring/Summer 2016 season. www.pmofficial.com

Deine Erfolgsgeschichte begann vor 15 Jahren. Wie sahen deine Anfänge aus und welchen Herausforderungen musstest du dich stellen?

Die Anfänge waren ganz klein: Ein 12-Quadratmeter-Stand in Paris, eine Bluse in 24 Farben und der Glaube daran, dass eine Bluse auch Spass machen kann.

Was treibt dich an?

All die vielen Kunden, die unsere Kollektion mittlerweile tragen und lieben, geben uns Recht und motivieren mich immer wieder aufs Neue – damals wie heute.

Was ist dein Ziel?

Ich glaube daran, dass nur die Leidenschaft und Empathie Wege ebnet und Türen öffnet.

Und natürlich habe ich meine Visionen, dafür stehe ich jeden Tag auf und mache weiter.

In welchem Markenumfeld positioniert sich 0039 Italy?

Wir machen den Spagat zwischen Premium und Contempary, weil wir eben doch besonders sind, ob es die Liebe zum Detail, die Qualität oder das besondere Etwas ist.

Welchen Typ Frau spricht 0039 Italy an?

Unsere Kundin ist zwischen 14 und 80 Jahren, ist Businessfrau und Mama, ist High-Fashion und Smart Shopper zugleich, das ist unser großer Vorteil. Wir schließen niemanden aus.

Wo ist 0039 Italy erhältlich?

Bereits in über 1.500 renommierten Stores, in nationalen sowie internationalen Departmentstores wie beispielsweise KaDeWe, Theresa und Breuninger, bis hin zu unseren eigenen Läden sowie Franchisepartnerschaften.

Welche Ratschläge gibst du jungen Designern heute?

Lebe deine Träume, aber denke dabei immer daran, für wen du etwas machen möchtest und bleib authentisch. Trage deinen Verstand im Herzen und dein Herz im Verstand.

AT: Your success story has its beginning 15 years ago. What did your start look like, and what challenges did you face?

AB: At the beginning, things were quite small. A 12-square-meter stand in Paris, one blouse in 24 different colors, and the firm belief that even a blouse could be a lot of fun.

What drives you?

All the many customers who now wear and love our collections, who validate what we do and keep motivating us anew – both then and now.

What is your ambition?

I believe that only passion and empathy can pave the way forward and open doors. And of course I’m working toward a vision that makes me get up every day and keep on going.

In what segment of the market is 0039 Italy positioned?

We span the breadth between premium and contemporary, with a love for detail, quality, and that extra special something.

What type of woman does 0039 Italy appeal to?

Our customer is between 14 and 80, is a businesswoman and mother, and is both a high-fashion fan and a smart shopper at the same time – that’s our big advantage.

Where is 0039 Italy available?

In more than 1,500 renowned stores, in national and international department stores such as KaDeWe, Theresa, and Breuninger, and in our own boutiques and with franchise partners.

What advice would you give to young designers?

Live your dream, but always remind yourself who you want to make things for, and stay authentic. Mind and heart – the two go hand in hand.

Kiek ma einer an Zwischen Bulette und Berghain gibt’s ganz viel Platz: Berlin ist die Welthauptstadt der Nischen. Vom Kleingärtner bis zum LingerieDesigner kann hier jeder glücklich werden, was bekanntlich schon Preussenkönig Friedrich II. erfreute. Ist ein neues Projekt am Start, wird aus dem „wat isn ditte“ schnell ein „kiek ma einer an“. Erfolg hat, wer sich was traut und nicht der mit dem meisten Bling-Bling. Hier beeindrucken weder Grand Dames noch Jüngelchen in Slim-FitAnzügen durch pure Anwesenheit. Dem Berliner perlt das lapidar als „jedem Tierchen sein Pläsierchen“ von den Lippen. Und die Tierchen kommen zu Tausenden und schlagen hier jedes Jahr neue Wurzeln.

Eint sie doch die Bewunderung für eine urberlinerische Eigenschaft: die Egalheit. Nichts ist der Stadt mehr „piepe“ als der Mainstream. In Berlin zählt das Experiment, die Extravaganz. Wichtig ist der Freiraum. Wichtig ist der Mut. Wie heißt es so schön in Seeeds Song ‚Dickes B‘: „Mama Berlin Backsteine und Benzin, wir lieben deinen Duft, wenn wir um die Häuser zieh’n.“ Berliner Luft bleibt eben ein Exportschlager.

There is a big difference between Buletten and Berghain: Berlin is the world capital of niches. From allotment gardeners to lingerie designers, anyone can be happy here – something that King Friedrich II of Prussia famously appreciated. When there is a new project in the pipeline, ‘Wat kiekstn so’ quickly becomes ‘Kiek ma einer an’. Success comes to those who take chances, not those with the most bling. Grandes dames and young lads in slim-fit suits will fail to impress by their mere presence. As the Berliners would say, ‘Jedem Tierchen sein Pläsierchen – Different strokes for different folks’. And the folks keep coming: 40,000 of them are putting down new roots here every year. They are united in their admiration for an age-old Berlin characteristic: indifference. Nothing is more ‘piepe’ in the capital than the mainstream. In Berlin, it is the experiment – the extravagance – that counts. Scope for development is important. Courage is important. As the Berlin band Seeed puts it in their song ‘Dickes B’: “Mama Berlin – bricks and petrol, we love the way you smell as we walk from bar to bar.” Berlin air is still an export hit.

Mayer gestaltet in seinem Architektenstudio Möbel nach Mass, umweltverträglich hergestellt in Handarbeit in Kooperation mit Inlignum Möbel. Polensky betreibt einen waschechten Barbershop. Neben ­seinem Friseursalon Haartari im selben Kiez hier nun also der Haartari-Mann samt Bartwichse, Pomade und wuchtigen Barbierstühlen vor blankem Mauerwerk. Elsen eröffnete den Monkey Temple, einen Ruheraum für klassische Yoga-Massage. Für die Luxemburgerin mit Kunsthochschulabschluss ist „der Weg der Massage endlos“, was sich im meditativen Aspekt ihrer Anwendungen widerspiegelt. Visuell zusammengehalten werden die drei Gewerke auf 120 Quadratmetern durch das von Mayer aus Massivholz gestaltete Interieur. Man wandelt zwischen den einzelnen Bereichen vorbei an Regalen mit Flohmarktfunden und ­Coffeetable-Bildbänden, Kommoden und Esstischen, das geschäftige Hantieren der Barbiere in einem Ohr, das leise Summen der Klangschalen aus dem Yogaraum im anderen. Das 3-in-1-Prinzip nachhaltig neu interpretiert. Berlin eben.

One architect, one barber, one yoga masseuse, and one retail space: As so often happens in Berlin, friendship and the thirst to create something unique came together to make Format³, which took the standard flatshare, added a twist, and resulted in a concept store. Just as roommates living in separate rooms make up a home, so too have friends Jens Mayer (the architect), Nico Polensky (the barber), and Katrin Elsen (the masseuse) built an atmosphere of togetherness out of three different showrooms.

In his architecture studio, Mayer designs custom, environmentallyfriendly furniture which is then produced by hand in partnership with Inlignum Möbel. In his space, Polensky runs a proper barbershop. His hair salon, Haartari, is nearby in the neighborhood, but his room in Format³ includes mustache wax, pomade, exposed brick, and formidable barber chairs. Elsen, a native Luxembourger who studied art, used her room to open Monkey Temple, a peaceful oasis where she gives classic yoga massages. “The path of the massage is endless,” she says, a belief reflected in the meditative aspect of the treatments she gives.

The three diverse trades practiced here are visually united by a Mayerdesigned interior, with plenty of wood throughout the 120-square-­ meter space. Wander between the three different showrooms, linger by the shelves of flea market treasures or the collection of picturesque coffee table books, and hear the bustle of the barber as he goes about his work while the light humming of singing bowls drifts from the yoga room. It’s a whole new take on the three-in-one concept. That’s Berlin for you.

Major players from the fashion industry are once again joining forces for the upcoming Berlin Fashion Week. International designers and pre­ mium fashion brands will be presenting their Spring/Summer 2016 collections at the leading trade shows in the heart of the capital. The summer edition of Fashion Week will be characterised by even closer collaboration between key players and an improvement in all-round customer service. The joint ticketing and shuttle services first offered to those attending PREMIUM, SEEK, SHOW & ORDER and BRIGHT in January are now being extended to include the two sustainable fashion platforms, GREEN SHOWROOM and ETHICAL FASHION SHOW. The joint ticket allows visitors to register just once and then gain access to all six participating trade shows. The Mercedes-Benz and Audi shuttle service links up these trade shows and other selected fashion hotspots, including Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin and Der ­Berliner Mode Salon. The riverside location Arena in Berlin Treptow is proving to be a new centre for urban- and streetwear. SEEK and BRIGHT have chosen this cool spot as their new exhibition space.

Linda Mai Phung: Global Influences Linda Mai Phung wohnt in Vietnam und gründete 2010 mit Florence Bacine ein Modelabel, das zwischen ­Tradition und Moderne, Handarbeit und neuen Techniken, Asien und Frankreich, Fashion und Eco-Ethical die Brücke schlägt. Ihre Kollektionen werden von Reisen inspiriert, die Entwürfe für Herbst/Winter 2015/16 etwa sind das Ergebnis eines Besuchs im Mekongdelta. Der Jacquardstoff wurde von Thai-Ethnien handgewebt, das Muster kombiniert französisch-maritime Streifen mit typischen Mustern der Region.

Vietnam-based Linda Mai Phung and her business ­partner Florence Bacine founded a label in 2010 that builds bridges between tradition and modernity, handicraft and new techniques, Asia and France, and fashion and eco-ethics.

Their collections are inspired by their ­ t ravels, with the Autumn/Winter 2015/16 collection stemming from a visit to the Mekong Delta.
