FROM THE EDITORS’ DESK Dear Readers, Digital and electronics have found a new favour in the tough COVID-19 afflicted world. We see a common occurrence of online events, webinars, remote management, WFH and many such things. Digital technologies have been adopted to steer through competitiveness and ease out day to day operations along with finding innovative solutions for existing and new markets. There are technologies like printed electronics, illuminated packaging, battery printed to power signs glow. Innovative printed and organic electronics technology produces sensors based on conductive inks and functional materials. Integrated into wireless sensor nodes (sensors and their communication nodes), they are a cornerstone of applications in the areas of Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things. The new printing technology will ultimately expand existing digital business models and above all trigger the development of new, smart products. Heidelberg will be using stateof-the-art printing technology at its high-tech campus to produce sensors for digital applications – in particular in healthcare and logistics, and also in the retail and automotive sectors. Experts predict huge economic potential for printed sensors, forecasting sales of up to a billion euros over the next ten years. Another key development in Heidelberg stable is the launch of Zaikio. It comes around a year after the takeover of cloud software business Crispy Mountain by Heidelberg. Zaikio is a new open and independent cloud-based collaboration platform for the printing industry. In short, it enables straightforward, standardized data exchange between software, hardware, and the partners involved, which creates the basis for endto-end automated process chains. Heidelberg has decided to opt out of drupa 2021 due to ‘unforeseeable effects’ of COVID-19 which has accelerated the move towards digital and local events. The German Press manufacturer
major has decided not to participate in international trade fairs next year. Komori too has cancelled its drupa participation due to widespread economic impact of COVID-19. Komori has started their Indian operations with MBO H+H offering solutions for inserts and outserts solutions for the Pharma market. MBO focuses on conventional folding as well as web finishing solutions, offering a wide range of folding machines, web finishing aggregates, deliveries and peripherals. It offers products like robotic stacking solution CoBo-Stack and planning and analysis software Data Manager 4.0. Continuing with the realignment, Heidelberg has sold the Gallus Group to benpac holding ag. Samir Patkar, President, Heidelberg India talks about the post sale scenario. Minosha India (Formerly Ricoh India) continues with Ricoh’s legacy of providing best in class products, solutions and services to customers. To know what the new proposition holds for existing and new customers of Ricoh and Minosha, we had a meeting with Mr. Balaji Rajagopalan, CEO Core Business, Minosha India. Read out the full story and the latest offerings by the company in the inside pages. Contrary to normal, COVID 19 crisis has also been exploited as an opportunity by some – the counterfeiters. Between February to April 2020, more than 150+ cases of incidents had been reported in the media including cases of fake PPE kits, sanitizers, and masks. ASPA released State of Counterfeiting in India Report 2020 reveals that ‘Counterfeiting’ is robbing the country’s economy over Rs. 1 trillion every year. Find all this along with the regular news and information about installations, events, product launches, technology upgrades and much more from around the world of printing, packaging, signage and graphic arts in the July edition of PRESSIdeas. Enjoy reading!

Heidelberg sets up dedicated unit for printed & organic electronics Heidelberg invests in production of printed and organic electronics – production starts at Wiesloch-Walldorf site – billion euro market potential. Heidelberg has set up a dedicated business unit for the industrial development, manufacture, and sale of printed and organic electronics. The company has also started production at its Wiesloch-Walldorf site, investing some five million euros in a complete production line for printed sensors. Sensors developed at InnovationLab (iL) in Heidelberg for use in dental technology are set to be printed first. These innovative printed sensors make it possible, for the first time ever, to digitally record the distribution of masticatory pressure during occlusion, that is to say when the upper and lower jaws come together. 3D visualization on a tablet and data archiving enable malocclusions to be identified and subsequently corrected. Looking further ahead, Heidelberg is to use state-of-the-art printing technology at its hightech campus to produce sensors for other digital applications – in particular in healthcare and logistics, and also in the retail and automotive sectors.

“Embarking on the development and industrial production of printed and organic electronics represents a milestone for Heidelberg and for Germany as an industrial player. As we see it, our involvement in this production of high-tech sensors opens up the potential for growth in the two- to threedigit million euro range,” said Heidelberg CEO Rainer Hundsdörfer.
The future industrial printing of organic electronics and the associated software/hardware development represent a first for the German mechanical engineering company and will take digitization forward in leaps and bounds. The new sensor printing technology makes Germany’s high-tech industry a world leader in this area of development. In operational terms, its introduction offers Heidelberg a whole host of development opportunities, printing sensors mile after mile on an industrial scale in a cleanroom environment. The technology and the sheer scale of output in this form are currently unrivaled anywhere in the world.

consumer electronics sectors, portable technologies, and building automation.
Consumers benefit from new, cost-effective technology Printed and organic electronics – also often referred to as green electronics – offers numerous benefits for consumers. The energy-efficient production process, resource-conserving use of materials, and industrial series production also ensure consistent quality in large volumes at relatively low cost – key prerequisites for international competitiveness. Looking to secure a leading position in the digital future, Heidelberg – the current world market leader in the construction of printing presses – is throwing open the door into the new world of digital technology and moving into completely new areas of business.
Competition. Industrial engineer Luat Nguyen is now in charge of this unique platform for knowledge transfer, research, and development in the field of printed and organic electronics. The focus is on cooperation agreements with startups and other companies from all over the world. InnovationLab scientists work with these businesses to develop new materials, processes, and functional products that they subsequently get ready for industrial-scale production in partnership with Heidelberg.
High market potential iL and Heidelberg have set an ambitious goal for their cooperation. Together, they are looking to play a leading global role in printed electronics. Innovative products are providing both companies with new markets and opportunities for establishing partnerships in all kinds of industries. Experts predict huge economic potential for printed sensors, forecasting sales of up to a billion euros over the next ten years.
German government’s timely funding paves the way for success The current success is the result of years of fundamental research by scientists from Germany and other countries at InnovationLab GmbH in Heidelberg. iL’s shareholders are the DAX-listed companies BASF and SAP, Heidelberg University, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, and Heidelberg. It started out in 2008 following its successful participation in the German government’s Leading-Edge Cluster A hand-held reader can dynamically record masticatory pressure distribution thanks to innovative printed sensors.
Heidelberg launches Zaikio Zaikio is the new open and independent industry platform from and for the entire printing sector. Print shops are faced with the challenge of making ever shorter and more varied runs cost-effective. The increasingly complex relationships between these print shops, their customers, and various business partners also need to be managed efficiently. The solution is to establish fully automated, integrated processes across company boundaries that make workflows and transactions between printers, software providers, equipment manufacturers, and suppliers far, far simpler. Around a year after the takeover of cloud software business Crispy Mountain by Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg), the company is launching Zaikio – a new open and independent cloud-based collaboration platform for the printing industry – for this very purpose. “With the open industry platform Zaikio, Heidelberg is actively meeting the challenges faced by the printing sector in the digital era. This marks the next milestone in the industry’s digitization,” says Heidelberg CEO Rainer Hundsdörfer.

Zaikio unites all industry players on a single platform using three key elements. The free Zaikio Account enables each and every user to log into all connected software systems with a single login. The Zaikio Hub is used to administer personal and organizationbased accounts, linking the services and software of the various providers – from existing software to apps developed specifically for Zaikio. Last but not least, Mission Control is the print shop’s digital control center. All data is received here in a standardized form and can be read, edited, and restored by other apps. The result is straightforward, standardized data exchange between software, hardware, and the partners involved, which creates the basis for end-toend automated process chains.
“In addition to making complete processes and collaboration much simpler in the printing industry, Zaikio also has the potential to secure a profitable future for its users. As a founding partner and driving force of Zaikio, Heidelberg is open to working with other strategic partners and investors to grasp the opportunities digitization offers an entire industry,” continues Hundsdörfer.
Zaikio and its users need you, you, and you! Successful platforms and their users thrive on participation, so anyone who wants to get involved can now create a free Zaikio Account at the Zaikio website to help gradually shape, expand, and establish the platform. Zaikio interfaces and tools enable potential partners and investors to link their products with the platform and make them available to all users via the Zaikio Hub. Zaikio’s team of developers will provide the necessary support. A large number of the industry’s well-known software providers are on board from the outset, and preparations are being made for further cooperation agreements. This means Zaikio’s range of functions will keep on growing and, because it is a cloud application, new functions and inclusions will immediately be available to all users. “Only a shared, open platform that unites as many industry players as possible can bring about the change and standardization so urgently required,” underlines Matthias Prinz, Managing Director of Zaikio GmbH. “Zaikio is just such a platform, combining the comprehensive Heidelberg know-how and network with Zaikio’s agile philosophy. Over the coming months, we’ll gradually be unveiling and establishing our platform,” he adds. Zaikio provides the platform that paves the way for seamless collaboration between software, hardware, and the various players involved.

China Print 2021 put off by a month due to covid-19 The 10th Beijing International Printing Technology Exhibition has been adjusted to June 23-27, 2021. Due to the impact of the new corona epidemic, the convention and exhibition industry has been hit hard and consequently, the tenth Beijing International Printing Technology Exhibition (China Print) 2021 has been pushed further to now happen from June 23 to June 27 next year. The earlier scheduled May event (9 to 13 May 2021) has now been delayed by one month to take place in June 2021. As of July 17, already 683 companies had registered booking nearly 130,000 square meters of exhibition space. China Print is an eagerly awaited event for the global industry; providing a huge international business, technology, trade and information exchange platform for the global printing and packaging market. With its new exhibition theme of “Innovation
Leading the Future”, China Print promises more cutting-edge technologies, business models, and innovative ideas such as
industrial Internet, artificial intelligence, and green environmental protection.
drupa reduces the fair duration drupa 2021 will have shortened runtime now running April 20-28. drupa has decided to reduce the duration of the trade fair from eleven to nine days for 2021. By doing so, it is responding to the wishes of the partner association VDMA (Printing and Paper Technology Trade Association) and many exhibitors to make the trade fair presentation more efficient and to concentrate the volume of visitors in a targeted manner. This is also in reaction to any continuing travel activities and restrictions.
again underlines the industry’s confidence in the international appeal of the event and the need for face-to-face meetings, acquisition of new customers or live presentation of running machines still exists. “Many of our customers also see it as their own responsibility to strengthen the industry and provide important impulses personally on site,” says drupa Director Sabine Geldermann. In order to guarantee a professional and safe trade fair as usual, drupa not only adapted
the general conditions but also relies on a hygiene and infection protection concept that is continuously adapted to the latest corona protection regulations and official requirements. Sabine Geldermann points out: “The character of drupa in 2021, due to the pandemic and hygiene regulations, will certainly be different from what we are used to, but it will continue to make a very important contribution to the economic recovery.”
“Since we are currently assuming that fewer visitors from overseas will be able to travel to drupa 2021, we consider a reduction from eleven to nine days to be sensible in order to direct visitor flows more efficiently. At the same time, the duration of nine days ensures that running machines can still be shown, which is a unique selling point of drupa,” explains drupa President Claus BolzaSchünemann. Despite some corona-related cancellations, the current booking status remains at a high level with over 1,500 exhibitors and a net hall space of more than 140,000 sqm. This once

Heidelberg decides to opt out of Drupa 2021 The global printing press manufacturing giant has cancelled participation in next year’s drupa trade fair due to unforeseeable effects of Covid-19. Covid-19 has accelerated the move towards digital and local events. Although there is no way of knowing what the impact of corona will be next year, Heidelberg felt the compulsion to make a decision now. The company has decided not to participate in international trade fairs next year and will thus not be taking part in drupa 2021 as well. “In 2021, drupa will be a very different event – global travel restrictions and hygiene regulations mean significantly fewer visitors and constraints on communication. Traditional international trade fairs with busy booths and halls will very probably be difficult to implement and will likely lose their status as global meet-up events for customers and manufacturers. Rise in Paper imports from China ring alarm bells for domestic industry Chinese paper imports to India up by 14% last fiscal; assisted by nil or preferential import duties. “Paper manufacturers in China and ASEAN countries enjoy access to cheap inputs and raw material, and also get incentives and subsidies in their countries. Allowing imports from these countries, at either nil or preferential import duties, into India does not provide a level-playing field to Indian manufacturers in the domestic market,” Indian Paper Manufacturers Association (IPMA) has pointed out in a letter to the Union ministry of commerce and industry. Imports should be allowed only on the basis of actual usual license, the association said. Chinese imports to India enjoy a margin of preference of 30% on most paper grades under Asia Pacific Trade Agreement. Last fiscal, paper imports from China went up by 14%, sounding alarm bells across the domestic paper industry.
tweaked from “free” to “restricted” to halt indiscriminate imports, the paper mills have written to the Centre. India’s import of paper from China reached 2,89,000 tonne in 2019-2020, according to DGCIS. “The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in paper import to India in the last nine years (between FY11 to FY20) is over 13%. This is one of the highest amongst all the sectors that have been affected by surge in imports,” said AS Mehta, president, IPMA. Even as Indian paper mills are working below capacity, thousands of jobs have been lost due to losses causing shutdown. Besides, there’s distress in the ancillary industries supplying paper raw material to the paper industry.
India’s paper import policy should be
Paper mills in India reeling under immense economic pressure created by Covid-19 related slowdown situation – when both demand and supply have been affected – aggravated by the menace of cheap paper imports from China as well as ASEAN. IPMA has urged the government to hike basic customs duty on paper import to 25% and also to place it in the Negative List for all existing and future free trade agreements.

Kodak and Uteco ship third Sapphire EVO M Press - the shipment of the third Sapphire EVO M Press for digital flexible packaging printing heads for N. America. The third UTECO Sapphire EVO M Press for the production of flexible packaging began its journey to the customer a few days after passing the factory acceptance test. This inkjet web press is destined for a company in North America, where it will be used for applications requiring large quantities of short run jobs. Other Sapphire EVO M Presses are already up and running very successfully at flexible packaging printers in Italy and Japan. The Sapphire EVO M Press was developed jointly by the Uteco Group and Kodak. The mid web digital press lets flexible packaging printers migrate jobs from traditional printing processes to digital and achieve high quality results along with tremendous time, makeready and cost savings. Utilizing KODAK Stream Continuous Inkjet Technology and low-cost water-based pigment inks from Kodak, the digital press delivers excellent CMYK print quality on a variety of plastic film materials and papers. Sapphire EVO M supports a maximum web width of 650 mm and a print width of 620 mm. With production speeds of over 150 meters per minute, it
is faster than any other digital solution for flexible substrates. The new customer chose the Sapphire EVO M Press because it offers the best duty cycle of any mid web digital press and enables more cost-effective production of volumes up to 20,000 sqm compared to analog processes. Another key benefit of the Sapphire EVO M from the customer’s point of view is that it improves their time to market enormously. The web-to-print software vendor announces a new service that helps printers add product personalization functionality to Shopifybased storefronts. The service is tailored to help those who want to offer online product personalization navigate the maze of web-toprint technology. “From our experience, small and mediumsized vendors often lack the technical expertise and resources to launch a web-to-print project,” states Dmitry Sevostyanov, CEO at Customer’s Canvas. “This is a serious burden that prevents many companies from initiating them.” The new offering includes the following steps: • Discuss the goals of the project and the outcome. During this step, company’s engineers collect the client’s project requirements and define the project scope. • Build a proof-of-concept to validate the feasibility of the project and demonstrate it to the client. • Deploy the web-to-print integration and set up the online storefront. • Train the client’s employees on

“We are selling our narrow-web rotary and rotary flexographic printing activities to focus more closely on innovative solutions for the entire printed sheet value chain. We will be retaining our in-house digital expertise and, by collaborating with benpac on the Gallus Labelfire, we will also be making further progress with the digitization of conventional presses. At the same time, we will remain a major supplier on the growing label market with our sheetfed offset presses,” says Heidelberg CEO Rainer Hundsdörfer. The transaction will see benpac assume ownership of Gallus Holding AG in St. Gallen, Gallus Ferd. Rüesch AG in St. Gallen, Gallus Druckmaschinen GmbH in Langgöns, Heidelberg Web Carton Converting GmbH (WCC) in Weiden in der Oberpfalz, and Menschick
Trockensysteme GmbH in Renningen – five sites with a total of some 430 employees in Germany and Switzerland. With an agreed purchase price of some 120 million euros, Heidelberg is expecting the deal to generate earnings in the mid two-digit million-euro range. The parameters will be finalized at the time of closing. The sale, which still needs to be approved by the relevant bodies and is subject to other condition precedents, is set to take effect before the end of 2020. “Our aim is to ensure the long-term financial stability of Heidelberg, and all the measures since our transformation started in March this year have been geared toward this objective. Selling the Gallus Group is another key part of our realignment and follows on from the successes we have achieved so far during the transformation process. This further major boost to our liquidity and Group equity will be a big help, especially during the coronavirus crisis,” underlines Heidelberg CFO Marcus A. Wassenberg.

in the world can afford to overlook. Globally, it now stands at 3.3% of global trade (according to OECD report) and is impacting the social and economic development of countries. Even in the Covid-19 crisis, it has been observed that the criminals are taking advantage of the high market demand for personal protection and hygiene products and providing fake and sub-standard products which are a direct threat to our paramedical professionals, security volunteers, and society at large. The key findings of the report are as follows: • The number of counterfeit incidents in India increased by 24% between 2018 to 2019. • The top 10 sectors with the highest number of counterfeit cases reported include Currency, FMCG, Alcohol, Pharma, Documents, Agriculture, Infrastructure, Automotive, Tobacco, Lifestyle & Apparel. Amongst these Currency, Alcohol & FMCG continue to be the top three sectors with the highest counterfeit incidents in the last two years. Asahi AWP-DEW 4260 PLF: First water-wash processor with automated plate wash-out to UV finished plate - delivers higher quality, faster processing, sustainable footprint and easy maintenance concept. Asahi Photoproducts recently announced the availability of its next-generation larger format water-wash flexographic plate processor, the AWP-DEW 4260 PLF. This is the first waterwash processor of its kind with an automated process from plate wash-out to the UV finished plate including plate processing, rinsing, drying and UV post exposure within one system. “The market of larger volume users for AWP flexo plates and particularly for flexible packaging applications is growing,” said Dieter Niederstadt, Technical Marketing Manager. “For that reason, it was time for us to introduce a new member to our largest format processor family. Exclusively focusing on using the new AWP-DEW plate with this processor allows us to reduce the environmental footprint of the platemaking process by reducing the content of additives in the washout solution. It also allows us to speed-up the time for each plate coming out of the line dramatically.” The system is designed to be able to use two standard formats at approx. 3-5 plates per hour, either 1200x 900 mm (48 x 36 inch) or 1067 x 1524 mm (42 x 60 inch), which gives both Asahi and its customers incredible flexibility in machine utilization. Plus, The AWPTM-DEW 4260 PLF is an automated combination of washer-dryer-light finishing, providing the opportunity for reduction

of operator hands on requirements and potential associated errors. For customers already having a separate light finisher, the AWP-DEW 4260 PLF processor is available in a version without the light finisher function. This processor combination is the first incremental system of its kind and also features an improved UVA/UVC inline post exposure uniformity vs. offline systems with light finishing drawer.

•
•
• The AWP-DEW 4260 PLF processor is the successor development to Asahi’s 1116PD processor which has been used by many high-volume end users in the market. New features as compared to the older model include: • • • •
Integrated plate punching system for pin bar Integrated air knife after plate rinsing unit to dry the plate Higher post-exposure uniformity with inline UVA and UVC light finishing Filter unit is located inside the machine
with easy roll-out operator access New machine maintenance concept including low maintenance pumps and easy pipe layout Water safety tray located on the side frame without the need to clean leaked solution Asahi remote human machine interface (HMI) access and optional smart glass support system (future option) Optimized machine footprint at 6112 x 2070 x 1295 mm (smaller vs. separate units)
New Asahi maintenance concept With the introduction of the new processor, Asahi has also realized the need to improve its AWP machine maintenance concept for our customers. As just-in-time production today is very important, the AWP-DEW 4260 PLF processor has a modem communication link on all machines to the processor’s human machine interface (HMI). This allows our technical support team to connect with the customer machine from any location

for first level maintenance support. Our experience shows that 60% of the causes of all machine-related service issues can be traced with this support. In addition to tracing the cause of any problems, Asahi has also introduced a remote smart glass support concept as a future option on all systems. According to Alex Downes, Asahi Service Engineer, “The difference this functionality makes is unbelievable; pictures can explain so much more than words. A typical support interaction with a customer which took me hours of travel time in the past can now pin point the detailed problem in no time, allowing us to either fix the problem immediately or at least send the exact needed spare part to the customer. If we didn’t have the appropriate part with us on a traditional service call, that often required an additional visit, leading to more cost and potentially a longer down time. Now everything can be done quickly and in one step, often eliminating the need for any travel at all and getting the customer up and running quickly.” Niederstadt added, “Based on what we have seen in the start-up phase of this new service, we believe we can speed-up our service and reduce the amount of travel by half. This will better utilise our engineers and provide higher quality service for our customers.” “Following the announcement of the AWPDEW 4260 PLF processor at Labelexpo Europe in 2019, the first prototype machine was installed at a flexible packaging printer/ converter,” Niederstadt added. “Now looking back over the last nine months of testing and more than 4.000 square meters of plate production, we are ready to bring this innovative processor into the market together with our AWP-DEW plate.” AWP-DEW digital flexo plates are ideal for use with UV, EB, water-based and solvent-based inks and make a transition to Fixed Colour Palette printing easy, minimizing the need to use a larger number of spot colour inks. These durable plates also deliver improved plate lifetime on press.
Diageo creates world’s first ever paper-based spirits bottle The 100% plastic free paper-based spirits bottle is made entirely from sustainably sourced wood. Diageo has announced creation of world’s first ever 100% plastic free paper-based spirits bottle. It has been created through a new partnership with Pilot Lite, a venture management company, to launch Pulpex Limited, a new sustainable packaging technology company. To ensure that the technology can be used in every area of life, Pulpex Limited has established a partner consortium of leading FMCG companies in non-competing categories including Unilever, and PepsiCo, with further partners expected to be announced later in the year. The consortium partners are each expecting to launch their own branded paper bottles, based on Pulpex Limited’s design and technology, in 2021. “We’re proud to have created this world first. We are constantly striving to push the boundaries within sustainable packaging and this bottle has the potential to be truly ground-breaking. It feels fitting that we should launch it with Johnnie Walker, a brand that has often led the way in innovation throughout its 200 years existence,” comments Ewan Andrew, Chief Sustainability Officer, Diageo PLC. Pulpex Limited has developed a ‘first-of-itskind’ scalable paper-based bottle designed and developed to be 100% plastic free and expected to be fully recyclable. The bottle is made from sustainably sourced pulp to meet food-safe standards and will be fully recyclable in standard waste streams. The technology will allow brands to rethink their packaging designs, or move existing designs into paper, whilst not compromising on the existing quality of the product.
Pulpex Limited’s technology allows it to produce a variety of plastic-free, single mould bottles that can be used across a range of consumer goods. The packaging has been designed to contain a variety of liquid products and will form part of Diageo’s commitment towards Goal 12 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: ‘Responsible Consumption and Production’. Making bottles from glass consumes energy and creates carbon emissions. The idea with paper based bottles is that customers would be able to drop them straight into the recycling. Drinks companies have been developing paper bottles to try to cut down on pollution and make products more sustainable. Carlsberg is in the process of developing a paper beer bottle. UK firm Frugalpac produces paper wine bottles which it says are made from recycled paper with a “food grade liner”. However, drinks giant CocaCola recently expressed that it would not ditch single-use plastic bottles because consumers still want them. Diageo said its bottles will be made by pressurising pulp in moulds which will then be cured in microwave ovens. The bottles will be sprayed internally with coatings that are designed not to interact with the drinks they will contain. Many paper cartons contain a plastic coating inside to prevent leakage. Diageo paper bottles, however, will be 100% plastic free, doing away with even that leak preventive plastic coating.

Sustainability in Packaging Asia to have a Virtual Showing The 21-25 Sept 2020 conference has been transformed into a fully virtual event. Smithers, organizers of Sustainability in Packaging Asia, have decided to conduct the show scheduled for 21st to 25th September, 2020 as a fully virtual show. The decision was made after diligently reviewing the COVID-19 situation and looking at new solutions and formats to ensure bringing the benefits of the annual Sustainability in Packaging Asia conference to the delegates. Sustainability in Packaging Asia has been transformed into a fully virtual event, with the organizers believing it to be the best option to provide all the stakeholders with the certainty they need to plan their participation and maximise the value from the event in a safe and reliable way. Since its launch in US in 2006, Sustainability in Packaging conference has gone from strength to strength and has been successfully launched in Europe.
As the packaging industry faces growing consumer and regulatory pressure to find sustainable packaging options that ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’, companies across the value chain are looking to sustainability to differentiate from their competitors and win new business. Brands have ambitious sustainability goals to hit, converters want to champion the sustainable credentials for their materials and raw materials companies are innovating to solve performance and end of life issues. The challenge is that the things that make packaging (especially plastics packaging) effective at its job (it’s cheap and durable) also hinder its sustainability – it lasts a long time and is uneconomical to recycle. Asia is becoming a key arena for sustainability discussions because the consumer base is growing quickly and with
it demand for packaging but the recycling infrastructure and waste management is less developed. China’s recent ‘National Sword’ policy has curtailed European and US plastic waste going to China to be recycled and created heightened awareness of sustainability in both China and surrounding countries. As global brands look to Asia to drive their growth, Asia provides many opportunities and challenges for creating a growing need for sustainable packaging solutions in the region and these will create the key themes for this new event.

During the novel Coronavirus outbreak, precaution is of paramount importance to provide protection from these viruses. Despite every effort, humans can end up touching publicly-exposed contaminated surfaces, like door handles, lift buttons, elevator handles, ATM display surfaces, market cart handles, electronics & digital devices, etc. The copper film by Knam Marketing helps in sterilizing such surfaces when covered. The antimicrobial copper film attracts bacteria which absorbs it into its cell. The absorbed copper ion penetrates the cell membrane of bacteria, leading to water and essential nutrients’ loss from the cell which
results in killing the bacteria. Speaking on the launch, Mr. Amit Goel, Founder of Knam Marketing, “Some significant features that make the antimicrobial copper film by Knam Marketing indispensable in the current health-crisis are – the strong anti-microbial properties of copper, which remain active until the film lasts. The film can be easily used to cover any desired surface and it will start exterminating the virus. Its natural antibiotic properties make it harmless for both – humans and the environment.”

Next FESPA Global Print Expo moves to Amsterdam in March 2021 The Madrid show scheduled to take place in October 2020 called off. The Munich show of March 2021 will now take place in Amsterdam. FESPA Global Print Expo will no longer take place in Madrid in October 2020, due to the continued public health risks and business disruption caused by the global COVID-19 pandemic. FESPA will now host its next flagship international event at the RAI Exhibition Centre in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, from 9-12 March 2021, again co-locating FESPA Global Print Expo, European Sign Expo and Sportswear Pro. FESPA CEO Neil Felton explains: “In March 2020 we took the decision to delay FESPA Global Print Expo by six months in the face of the advancing pandemic and its implications for our exhibitors and visitors. Since then the development of COVID-19 has been dynamic and unpredictable. While many regions are now gradually emerging from lockdown, at this point in time we cannot be confident that we could match exhibitor and visitor expectations of a FESPA event if we were to go ahead in October this year.”
He continues: “Early March 2021 offers the strongest alternative, giving our exhibitors and visitors time to recover and ourselves time to prepare fully for any new operational requirements. Feedback from the market indicates that, having faced the considerable commercial challenges of 2020, our community will welcome FESPA Global Print Expo in March 2021 as an important platform for business recovery and forward progress early next year.”

Second EFI VUTEk h5 for PM-TM in 6 months Fast, economical production leads PM-TM to invest in 2 EFI VUTEk h5 printers in less than 6 months. Latvia-based printing company PM-TM purchased its second EFITM VUTEk h5 hybrid roll-to-roll/flatbed LED superwideformat printer from Electronics For Imaging in less than six months. The recently installed 3.2-metre-wide printer will allow the company to meet customer demand as well as pursue business goals to increase export orders. “The VUTEk h5 printers provide fast economic production with exceptional quality,” said Aleksandrs Gurvics, founder of PM-TM. “This is an investment that can fuel a company’s growth by 35-40% per year. The
operative costs are relatively low, and the machines are very reliable.” PM-TM was founded in 2011 and is the largest wide-format print producer in Latvia, with a solid client base in the Baltic states as well as in 20 other countries worldwide, with renowned customers such as CocaCola, Danone, L’Oréal, Sony, Unilever and many more. PM-TM has always invested in top-quality machines and bought its first EFI VUTEk printer – a 2-metre-wide hybrid – through dealer Sesoma in 2014.
The success of that purchase led PM-TM to purchase two additional VUTEk printers during the next two years. These printers were a turning point: PM-TM’s reputation grew as the company gained the ability to handle more orders, offer lower prices and meet tight deadlines – all while maintaining a high level of quality. As a result, PMTM’s team rapidly expanded, and now its production department employs more than 60 people. With such significant growth, the company continued to invest in additional machinery, adopting EFI’s latest LED-inkjet hybrid printer technology, to keep up with domestic and international demand. PM-TM purchased an EFI VUTEk h5 in 2019, and followed that up with its most recent h5 printer installation, to ensure that the business could reach unmatched levels of functionality, quality and productivity. PM-TM now operates with a total of five EFI VUTEk machines.

Eye Spy Signs strengthens capabilities with installation of Durst Rho 163 TS printer Tasmania’s Road Signs are printed with the traffic sign printer from Durst. Eye Spy Signs started out in a suburban home garage in Hobart (Tasmania – Australia) back in 1994 eking out an existence as a dedicated Real Estate sign provider. In 1996 the Company bought the Government’s Main Roads sign workshop at tender and all of a sudden became heavily involved in road sign manufacture for the State of Tasmania. For the next 20 years, its road signs were made using conventional methods – screen printing or cut vinyl – both high in labour content and inherently inefficient. In the meantime, the development of digital printing processes – and in particular ink technology (in conjunction with 3M) was progressing at a quick pace. In March 2017, Eye Spy took delivery of a Durst Rho 163 TS and all of a sudden, another world opened up. Apart from conventional roll-to-roll printing, it offered many side benefits including the ability to print flat substrates. For example, they very frequently print jobs direct to corflute requiring no over laminate. These days they put many different types of substrates through the machine – it is so versatile. Year on year, their turnover has increased whilst their labour levels have decreased. Running costs are surprisingly low and the reliability of the machine is nothing short

of incredible – they have experienced machine availability exceeding 99% since it was commissioned. When needed, support from Durst has been outstanding and the fact that they are in different hemispheres/ time zones has made little difference. John Howard, Managing Director, Eye Spy Signs P/L says: “In summary the acquisition of the machine is the best business decision that Eye Spy has ever made. It was not cheap, but what do you expect to pay if you are buying the best in the world?” The Rho 163 TS series is the latest development for industrial traffic sign production. Using specially designed 3M UV Inkjet Traffic Inks it delivers highest quality and reliability, meeting traffic color specifications to produce certified highly reflective traffic signs. Printing can be done on both 3M reflective roll media and rigid media. It meets the key requirements in terms of retro-reflectivity andcolor boxes as per traffic sign regulations, while significantly reducing cycle times and production workflow steps.
