FROM THE EDITORS’ DESK Dear Readers, LabelExpo welcomes record visitors this edition. It was an almost 23 percent increase in visitor footfall over the last edition at the 6th edition that took place during 22-25 November at Greater Noida. Being the biggest LabelExpo India so far with around 10,000 visitors from 55 countries taking advantage of the successful showcase by 250 exhibitors, it was almost 28 percent larger than the previous edition of 2016. “It is a resounding proof that the Indian label and package printing market is booming, with printer demand for new technology and innovation moving at an incredible rate,” states Lisa Milburn, managing director for Labelexpo Global Series. The show was a catalyst for machinery launches and numerous sales achieved by exhibitors on the show floor. The key sales taking place at the show include: Monotech Systems selling two Jetsci Colornovo UV inkjet presses, the new launch and also other 8 key sales; Multitec selling two 8-colour presses; HP Indigo selling Indigo 6900 press; and Vinsak selling two USAR slitter rewinders and three Lombardi presses. Other machinery sales were achieved by Esko, DuPont, Nilpeter, Omet, Xeikon, Rhyguan, Brotech, UV Graphic, SNM Enterprises, Hyden Packaging, Marks Print, amongst others. Key launches included IEEC’s Ozonash and Lab Corona Treater; and Alliance Printech’s Alliance A3 flexo press. Veepee Graphics, a pre-press trade house, launched a mobile application for its customers. Also reflecting the buoyant mood of the industry, several strategic partnerships were announced, including Domino and Multitec; and Konica Minolta Business Solutions and China-based Brotech Graphics who are partnering to source accessories for the Konica Minolta AccurioLabel 190 label press in India. Complementing the Expo, an extremely well attended Brand Innovation Day took place on day one of the show. Brand owners and designers from a wide range of sectors took part in an exclusive series of seminars and educational sessions aimed at equipping them with expert insight into making the most out of their brand, how they can overcome key challenges on the path to future growth, and stay ahead of the competition in a fast-paced industry. Andy Thomas-Emans, strategic director for Labelexpo Global Series, moderated a lively panel discussion on product decoration, joined by representatives from SMI Coated Products, Esko, HP India and Avery Dennison. The 2018 LMAI Awards, sponsored by Avery Dennison was extremely well-attended by exhibitors and association members at Labelexpo India 2018. More industry installations in recent times, apart from LabelExpo orders, include: Printwell installing Amritsar’s 1st Heidelberg Speedmaster SX74; and Konica Minolta installing MGI JETVARNISH 3DS & iFOIL S at Futura Infinite. In addition to our LabelExpo India 2018 review, we have the cover story of Fusion Print & Pack’s growth and success with Autoprint; interview with Abraham Prabhakar, MD Asia Business, iMS Global; and Asia’s first Packaging Pre-Press Software training institute. There’s a lot more in our regular sections serving our esteemed readers. Enjoy reading the November 2018 Issue of PRESSIdeas.

Day, an event hosted by Heidelberg for vocational students. Over 130 budding young talents applauded enthusiastically and got an impression of what the competition involves. “The digital age offers great opportunities for committed and qualified young professionals and is, as it were, a prerequisite for the digital transformation of the leading industrial companies in their respective fields,” confirmed Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hermann.
Clever and creative minds are in demand Participants in WorldSkills Germany must have completed their training and be under 23 years of age. Applications are submitted to Zentral-Fachausschuss Berufsbildung Druck und Medien (ZFA). The participants can look forward to varied, exciting, and eventful competition tasks based on the tasks of the international WorldSkills. For example, those competing in the printing technology skill had to print two posters, mix two spot colours, and complete one maintenance task. The graphic designers created a logo, a flyer, posters, and a packaging. The competitors in the web design skill demonstrated basic web design concepts with server- and client-side programming and design. An expert jury made up of representatives of the vocational school teachers, the association, the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce, and the ZFA evaluated the work on each day of the competition and then determined the winners. The German championships are hosted by WorldSkills Germany together with partners such as Bundesverband Druck und Medien e.V. (the German printing and media industries federation), SRH Berufsbildungswerk Neckargemünd (a non-profit vocational training organization), and Zentral-Fachausschuss Berufsbildung Druck und Medien (the central committee for vocational education and training in print and media). “We are proud to be a founding member of WorldSkills Germany and to be supporting the national championship for the eighth time. And this time as a platform for all media professions,” said Prof. Dr. Hermann at the award ceremony. “The media professions are in great demand in the industry, which is looking for the clever and creative minds of the future.” Heidelberg’s clear commitment to training was honoured in spring with its nomination as a Federal

Heidelberg a forerunner in the digitalization of vocational training For five years, Heidelberg has been one of the five partners which supports the “Social Augmented Reality” and “Social Virtual Learning” project in technical and commercial vocational training funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The project is coordinated by ZFA (Social-augmented-learning). Heidelberg contributes the 3D press data so that the students can master learning modules such as lateral ink distribution, sheet reversal, or inline coating in virtual space using a model of the Speedmaster SX 74. The opportunities afforded by visualization and knowledge management have already yielded very good results at vocational schools. Throughout Germany, nine institutions are already equipped with AR/VR technology, and
Switzerland, Austria, and Denmark want to follow suit. There are also learning modules with the high-speed cutter from Polar, and the current project uses label printing machines from Gallus for flexo and digital printing. The project has been extended until 2020. Heidelberg also uses AR/VR in its own training. There are five places per training year, divided into three for print media technologists and one each for packaging technologists and digital and print media designers. In addition, the company provides mechatronics engineers with targeted training in using the View2Connect virtual collaboration and communication platform, which facilitates completely digital assembly planning among other features. Virtual Reality is an integral part of the technical training here. For example, as part of Heidelberg’s Future Workshop, trainees in the “Digital Platforms” area are working on a project to produce and jointly develop 3D printing systems on behalf of Karlsruhe-based startup Apium with support from View2Connect.
The award ceremony was incorporated into Campus Day, an event hosted by Heidelberg for vocational students. VDMA’s Future Workshop and the Printing and Paper Industry in the Years 2030 to 2040 “In 2040, the basic human needs will be similar to those of today. People will be dependent on the supply of fresh food and in their purchases continue to insist on undamaged products, which can only be mastered with packaging.” With the aim to develop a mission statement for the years 2030 to 2040, VDMA, its member companies, the trend research company TRENDONE and the drupa team participated in a future workshop and discussed the influences of social and technological trends on the printing and paper industry. Which role will printing and paper technology play in a digitalized world? This is one of the questions the participants of VDMA’s future workshop discussed at Messe Düsseldorf GmbH in September. With a view to drupa 2020, the team also contributed to the mission statement for the years 2030 to 2040 developed on this occasion.
No Prospects without Future Perspectives Together – VDMA member companies, trend researchers from TRENDONE GmbH and students analyzed the influences of social and technological trends on the printing and paper industry and derived concrete fields of innovation and action. Looking forward is extremely crucial as Dr. Markus Heering, VDMA Managing Director, points out: ”In the daily business routine, the companies often play too little attention to the future. Changes in the market are not only a challenge, but may also offer chances. The companies must identify them at an early stage. Our aim is to develop a joint positive vision for the future of our sector.”
Travelling time to embrace the future In order to get in the mood for an innovative and predictive day, short time travel was done to the year 2040 characterized by a networked world full of drones and robots, mixed reality and artificial intelligence. When it comes to print specifically TRENDONE showed printed cell tissue and completely individualized products. During some group work periods they identified ten key future trends likely to have
a major influence on printing and paper technology manufacturing of which only some are mentioned below: Despite the increasing amount of time consumers spend online, they are equally expected to have offline breaks and more nature experiences. Technological advances such as smart factories, artificial intelligence and virtual reality will allow for progressive individualization. This is extremely important since it’s only natural that each individual wishes to stand out from the crowd. It becomes more and more relevant to react faster to changing markets. Methods like open innovation are highly likely to help companies identify their customer’s needs at an earlier stage and adjust their portfolio and business model accordingly.
“In 2040, the basic human needs will be similar to those of today. People will be dependent on the supply of fresh food and in their purchases continue to insist on undamaged products, which can only be mastered with packaging.”
Printed Products remain our everyday companions But the most important finding is that printed products will retain their key role in many spheres of life such as the individual design of textiles, rooms, ceramic products as well as electronic decorative or operator panels. We have to wait to see if these tendencies will already be present at drupa 2020 from June 16 to 26 in Düsseldorf.
How exactly does that affect the printing and paper industry? To name just one effect: Inter alia, print will fulfill even more emotional tasks than it does today and offer people some sort of analogue refuge in a networked society. Also core requirements will have impact on the printing and paper industry as Heering explains:

“With its zero gripper wastage, Autoprint’s Repetto 80 Die Punching Machines have helped us minimize wastage of boards and increase production. Their product quality, training of our operators and quick service has helped us tremendously in the smooth functioning of our business,” adds Kalpesh. For this purpose, he has already zeroed in on Autoprint’s High Precision Blanking Machine. “This is another good product from Autoprint for which we are in negotiation and will be soon installing. This Blanking machine has a good feedback from the industry. Being an indigenously manufactured machine, we can be sure of zero downtime and better quality printed cartons. The most appealing feature of Autoprint’s machines is their fully automized system
& speed throughout the process. In future he also plans to invest in Rotogravure Printing. He is optimistic about setting up their new venture in next financial year. “We have a good demand from our existing and new customers for labels and pouches,” he says. Equipped with Autoprint equipment, Fusion
Print And Pack can now supply quality material faster to their clients. It’s a win-win situation for everyone in the value chain. “Autoprint sales and service personnel have been very prompt in providing services to us. As of date these new installations have met all our expectations and we are sure that it will help us in the days ahead to increase
our customer base and grow our business faster. To summarize our investment in the Autoprint Repetto 80 Die Punching Machine in one simple sentence, I would say, ‘Grow and Succeed with Autoprint’,” concludes Kalpesh.

BALDWIN Vision Systems at LabelExpo India - Brings new industry 4.0 connected workflow solutions to Labelexpo India 2018. Exhibiting at Stand C5, Baldwin Vision Systems – provider of Colour Management and Control, Flexo, Gravure and Offset Presses, Inspection equipment, UV Lamps and Curing systems and Waste Management and Handling systems catering to Flexible packaging and Labels segments – showcased their latest solutions to LabelExpo India 2018 visitors. The key highlights of BVS’s LabelExpo stand were the company’s latest developments and new features for its growing portfolio of Defect Detection and Colour Management technology. The new Vision Systems business unit of Baldwin Technology Company, Inc. unites former brands PC Industries, QuadTech, and Web Printing Controls. Hemant Desai, Director for Baldwin Vision Systems - India, comments, “Guests to our stand had a first look at some truly exciting new technical achievements. These are some early examples that show—by combining engineering talent and resources—we can take our proven technology to a whole new level. BVS Colour Management and Defect Management Systems already have a strong presence in North America and Europe, and we are eager to feature these automated solutions here.” One “first look” is the Guardian RTM, a new real-time quality monitoring and reporting tool for the Guardian PQV advanced 100 percent print inspection. Guardian RTM uses a central server to monitor, collect, and display real-time inspection data for multiple presses and jobs—and even across multiple plants—on a simple, uncluttered dashboard user interface. Isaam Lutfiyya, Director of Global Sales & Marketing for BVS, explains, “This dataconnecting technology allows printers to track and compare many different production metrics. Press managers can monitor changes as they happen, and make highlyinformed decisions about print quality, defect management, and even operator-to-operator performance. This is a unique competitive advantage, in that it’s truly the first product of
its kind to tie together how you manage your processes, your print customers, and even your people. You’re empowered to quickly identify any mechanical issues, process inefficiencies, or even tailor your operator training to eliminate defects. This new platform opens the door to build even more functionality into the system.” Additional enhancements to the Guardian PQV include automated setup and automated job changeover, limiting operator intervention for a more efficient and accurate inspection process. The system provides true 100 percent print inspection for pharmaceutical, converting, label, flexo, wide, and narrow web applications. Other defect management solutions featured at the show include Guardian OLP PDF proofing and offline inspection, Guardian LSI inspection, and GV-500 Series digital web viewers. BVS Colour Management Workflow technology includes ColorTrack software, which automates the process of delivering absolute consistency from press-topress, shift-to-shift, and plant-to-plant. Significant advancements include options for customized ‘out of tolerance’ alerts, capabilities to reduce changeover time and leftover ink, precise calculation of required ink quantities during job setup, per-job monitoring of real ink costs, and the ability to manage conditions across different processes, presses, and facilities to guarantee brand colour fidelity. New data gathering, production monitoring, and reporting tools will enable quality managers to deliver full production overviews to print buyers and brand owners. These enhancements provide even greater control for highly accurate, fast, press-side correction of ink formulations.
Using InkWeigh software and scales, press operators can eliminate trial and error by weighing and tracking ink corrections at the press for each client, each job. Printers can fully track ink inventories for the creation of new recipes, for managing leftovers, for ensuring full traceability, and for optimizing ink storage to greatly reduce waste and cost. According to Mr. Lutfiyya, “The launch of new products and features demonstrates our heightened focus on providing the latest solutions to meet market demand for fast, accurate, and increased quality control. These enhancements exemplify our commitment to delivering future-proof systems that regularly undergo updates to ensure they meet printers’ changing requirements. The Industry 4.0 technology featured at Labelexpo India is a sign of things to come from BALDWIN Vision Systems.” The Vision Systems business unit of Baldwin Technology Company, Inc. is an innovator of advanced colour and inspection technology for the printing industry. Baldwin Vision Systems sells its automated control systems in more than 100 countries, and maintains a worldwide network of sales and service operations.
Color Measurement with DeltaCam delivers affordable, accurate inline spectral measurement to achieve absolute colour consistency. Packaging converters can utilize automated, full spectral value measurement—in agreement with ISO standards—on film, paper, or board, ensuring that all printed products are within their customers’ colour specifications.

processes. Corona surface treatment is essential in label printing. When the label is made from plastic substrate the ink tends to become blemished due to its inability to bond to the plastic. This problem occurs because the surface energy of the plastic is insufficient to permit a proper bond. A quality Corona treatment is necessary to ensure the perfect label print quality. Vetaphone Corona systems help obtain a flawless and long-lasting quality print. Adding Vetaphone Corona treater to web press, often eliminates
the need for using top-coated materials. Weldon Celloplast represents Vetaphone in India.

Mr. Gaurav Sachdev, VP, Standard Printers Providers was quite busy welcoming visitors and answering their queries and discussing business. The company stand highlighted the Taiyo range of Flexo Presses. The
company highlighted their STF – 340/460, TLC flexo press, a CI label/ lamitube press, a web offset press and other solutions besides a showcase of high quality print samples printed on their wide range of machines. Officials from Taiyo were also present to advise customers on the machines’ suitability for their individual requirements. Mr. Gaurav was very positive about the outcome of the great show. They entertained a lot of Indian and overseas visitors and generated many keen enquiries. Commenting on the show, Mr. Sachdev says, “We are happy about the outcome and organisation of the show. Though visitor footfall is better from previous LabelExpo editions, the commuting to and from the exhibition wasn’t as smooth as expected.” He hopes to convert many enquiries in the following months. Visitors showed their keen interest in Taiyo quality and could closely see the intricacies of printed samples on display at Standard
Printers Providers’ stand. The STF 340/460 feature tool-less quick colour change and shorter web path for minimising waste. It has movable cold-stamp unit and dual-servo motors on each unit. Codimag at Label Expo 2018 Waterless Offset and other technologies bring efficiencies for printers. “On a growing label market, Codimag technology offersan answer to today’s market requirements – combining optimum print quality of Offset with the flexibility to print shorter and shorter runs,” says Benoit
DEMOL (President, Codimag), whom we had a meeting with during the recent Label Expo India 2018 where the technology was offered to the visitors. Codimagoffers intermittent presses, giving printers a technological answer with very low production cost and without the need of expensive cylinders and toolings. “Job change does not imply cylinder or sleeve change. Printing plates are mounted directly onto the press without any plate mounting system,” explains Benoit.
world who use waterless offset technology for printing in the narrow web market, including Iwasaki (Japan) andKunshanJinjian (China). Codimag is the only press manufacturer with an Anilox inking system using waterless offset technology.
Vijay Parikh of Genius flexo, Indian representative of Codimag says, “Thanks to Aniflo and Waterless Offset technology by Codimag, set-up times and set-up wastes are considerably reduced and printers can get their margins back, which in fact is the need of the hour.”
Waterless Printing is a technology enabling elimination of the need for water or other chemicals in the printing process with the use of special printing plates that have two key surface properties: ink-resistant and ink-attractive. By working with only one fluid—ink—as opposed to two fundamentally different fluids—ink and water—the printing process is greatly simplified and some very unique benefits can be realized. Waterless runs on virtually any Offset press, but requires special Waterless Plates, Waterless ink and a means of cooling to control temperature on press.
Benoit in his interaction was very vocal about the plate cost of Codimag – being Waterless Offset Plates,it (the cost) is much cheaper than Flexo plates. Interestingly, according to Benoit, there are only three players in the

Asia thinks digital Heidelberg Smart Print Shop concept successfully established.
The print media industry in Asia is facing the same challenges as in other markets: print runs are getting shorter, the number of jobs is increasing, embellishment is becoming more and more complex, and all this with the shortest delivery times and lowest costs. Digitalization is progressing and these advantages are to be implemented internally in processes and externally in communication with print shop customers. At the end of October, more than 400 customers experienced what this could look like by attending the Commercial Day at the Print Media Center Shanghai, China. Under the motto “Turn Passion into Profit”, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) presented sustainable solutions to make commercial print shops more successful and to guide them on their way to the Smart Print Shop. The fully automated process chain with the Push to Stop philosophy, which is only interrupted manually if necessary, was demonstrated in networked live presentations. This optimized, intelligent production process stands for higher production reliability and thus for more productivity and cost-effectiveness.
Almost 400 customers from Greater China and the Asia-Pacific region attended Heidelberg Commercial Day at the Heidelberg Print Media Center in Shanghai.

presetting five jobs were printed in less than 15 minutes and immediately finished with a Stahlfolder machine. Thus Push to Stop results in a production, which is easy, secure, efficient and profitable. At the end of the demonstrations, the OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) was calculated and it was demonstrated how an increase in OEE can make production more efficient and job runs shorter and shorter. A Speedmaster CD 1027+L UV presented a 7-color multicolour job, demonstrating the wide range of spot colours achievable which covers the needs of more and more embellishment. A key component of Heidelberg’s Lifecycle Solution portfolio for customers is the Saphira consumables, which aim to maximize the OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) utilization of their presses through maximum quality, productivity and production reliability.
New Versafire generation celebrates premiere in China The new Versafire generation EV/EP made its debut in the Chinese market on Commercial Day. The Versafire EV digital printing system provides customers with a high degree of flexibility and creative possibilities, enabling them to further expand their digital business model through diversification and optimization. With the new “Invisible Red” special toner, there are now a total of five spot colours for the Versafire EV. Just like white, varnish, neon yellow and neon pink, “Invisible Red” provides additional embellishment options. For the first time it is now also possible to print first white and then the process colours CMYK. When printing on coloured paper and foils, extraordinary effects can be achieved – all in one pass, where previously several processes were necessary, which significantly improves efficiency.

neighboring regions such as northeast Russia. Here, state-of-the-art technology and service solutions are presented, information events are held, and intensive tests and analyses of equipment, consumables and workflow solutions are carried out. Customer operators are also trained here. The Print Media Center Shanghai has fully integrated workflows for commercial and packaging printers. The Qingpu plant is Heidelberg’s production site in Asia and is located nearby Shanghai. It assembles Speedmaster presses in 50 x 70 and 70 x 100 format, from four to sevencolour models, mainly for the Chinese market
and the Asian Pacific markets. More than 380 employees work for production in Qingpu and around 140 for sales and service for Heidelberg East China. “This is not my first time to visit the Print Media Center in Qingpu and Qingpu workshops. But I like the whole arrangement here, especially the new look of the PMC, the real production environment as a Smart Print Shop, as well as the unique live demonstrations. Strategic software alliance for a new information era Heidelberg and DOCUFY develop mobile, AR-enabled integrated solutions for intelligent and constantly updated content. With its “Heidelberg goes digital” strategy, Heidelberg is on the journey toward becoming a digital, agile company while also supporting its customers’ transition into the digital age through innovative software solutions and business models. Together with its subsidiary DOCUFY, Heidelberg is pursuing the further development of the COSIMA Component Content Management System and the TopicPilot mobile content delivery platform for the smart creation, classification, and mobile use of company-wide content throughout the product life cycle, from development to service. An interface to the Heidelberg’s intuitive View2Connect collaboration and communication platform increases the value of the engineering bill of materials within a company and ideally links CAD/PLM, ERP, and technical content management. Additional integrated tools from Heidelberg, such as the content publisher for ERP, PLM, and CMS sources, round out the practical applications of the solutions provided. Since the acquisition of DOCUFY in May 2017, Heidelberg has been using the COSIMA Component Content Delivery System to create its own technical documentation and make it available through the TopicPilot mobile publication platform. COSIMA and TopicPilot have developed into key pillars of Heidelberg’s portfolio for supporting customers as they transform into digital companies. Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hermann, Chief Digital Officer Lifecycle Solutions at Heidelberg, says: “COSIMA is a fully developed, ready-to-use Component Content Management System for the documentation process that can be adapted to meet specific customer needs and can be used in mechanical or plant engineering, measurement or control technology, and software. customers with consistent digital and mobile information management.” By developing COSIMA and TopicPilot, Hermann plans to expand the Heidelberg Platforms division’s portfolio to include additional innovative applications that are easy to implement.
Maintenance 4.0 with View2Connect, COSIMA, TopicPilot, and REFLEKT ONE in planning Hartmut Ball, Head of Heidelberg Platforms and Vice President Heidelberg PLM, adds: “We immediately recognized the potential of the DOCUFY software for the implementation of Heidelberg Maintenance 4.0. COSIMA can be used to track the maintenance steps for various machines and link them to descriptions of the way that maintenance is carried out. In turn, the mobile publication platform TopicPilot transmits all of this information to the service technician’s smartphone or tablet. What is special about this is that specific maintenance lists can be displayed there for each machine and maintenance interval. The integrated log function allows the user to check off maintenance steps that have
already been carried out, to add images and comments to them, and to save them centrally in the system. View2Connect then even presents maintenance tasks in the form of 3D instructions. TopicPilot and its link to the AR platform REFLEKT ONE can provide technicians with updated AR content.”
3D spare parts documentation for Wallbox Home Eco thanks to COSIMA and View2Connect Wallbox Home Eco impressively demonstrates the potential that can be unleashed by combining COSIMA and View2Connect. For this high-performance charging device for electric cars, Heidelberg has introduced a new combination of descriptive documentation and 3D spare parts documentation from a single source.
Using augmented reality applications in industry with kothes The ability to link 3D data with information also simplifies the use of AR applications, thereby promoting their industrial use. Linking the REFLEKT ONE AR platform to View2Connect, COSIMA, and TopicPilot

allows companies to enhance existing manuals and instructions through augmented reality and provide extensive AR-based instructions. The documentation specialists from kothes are happy to assist DOCUFY customers by offering their practical experience so as to ensure the introduction, operation and integration.
Leveraging software symbiosis with strategic partners Prof. Dr. Hermann sums it up: “For Heidelberg, the software integration of COSIMA, TopicPilot, View2Connect, and REFLEKT ONE is an ideal opportunity to digitally map a machine’s product life cycle, from development to service, and to enable the intelligent and mobile use of said information. We therefore plan to invest intensive efforts in the further development of COSIMA, TopicPilot, and View2Connect while also reinforcing our partnerships with RE’FLEKT and kothes with the aim of jointly ensuring an established place for futureproof solutions for Industry 4.0 and for the industrial application of augmented reality.”
Heidelberg View2Connect provides the maintenance tasks in the form of 3D instructions.

Cosmo Films launches metalized velvet lamination film - to offer intense silver colour along with rich velvet touch to the laminated paper/paperboard or package. Cosmo Films, global provider of speciality films for flexible packaging, lamination and labeling applications as well as synthetic paper, recently launched a metalized velvet lamination film for luxury packaging segment. The newly developed film has been engineered to offer intense silver colour along with rich velvet touch to the laminated paper/ paperboard or package. Silver colour is not easy to handle especially when used as a background during printing. It takes longer to dry and also has a risk of ink set off during print stacking. Due to these challenges, printers usually avoid using silver as a background colour. However, graphic art designers prefer silver background as it allows them to make attractive artworks facilitating use of many other shades and the impact it generates with gold foil stamping and UV spot coating. To bridge this gap,
Cosmo Films introduced the metalized velvet touch film which is glueable, stampable and printable. The matte silver coloured BOPP based velvet touch lamination film needs to be laminated to the unprinted paper before going for printing or post lamination embellishments. The film is available for both thermal and wet lamination in 32 and 20 microns respectively and offers excellent printability with offset, UV offset, screen, UV inkjet and laser printing. Apart from providing excellent scuff resistance, the film is perfect for post lamination operations like UV spot coating, foil stamping & embossing. The film is ideal for lamination of premium products like perfume cartons, liquor & wine cartons, gift & jewellery boxes, shopping bags for luxury brands and graphic arts industry.
Speaking on the development, Pankaj Poddar, CEO, Cosmo Films said, “Packaging design is an important differentiator given that the brand owners are extremely conscious of their brand image and consumer experience these days. With the addition of metalized velvet film to the existing portfolio, Cosmo now offers an enhanced portfolio of premium lamination films to choose from.”

Gold in packaging innovation for IVD breakthrough ACU-Drop II The Silver went to the Combo Excelsior, a multiple-use container with many new innovative features. The 29th edition of packaging innovation competition De Gouden Noot was won by ACU-Drop II, a unique, patented packaging form that revolutionises quality control in the In Vitro Diagnose (IVD) market. The innovative, dual chambered device keeps various fractions separated, preventing reactions between components of the desired matrix. When ready, the user simply pushes a button to allow the fractions to combine. Then mix with the integrated “static stirrer” and the sample is ready to use, either from the built-in dropper bottle or by attaching a syringe. ACU-Drop II will open doors in the quality control arena with its ease of use, elimination of the need for pipetting and by solving matrix interactions – all in a single container. Winning business combination Verhoeven Ontwerpburo and Eurotrol received the winner’s trophy containing the well-known solid gold walnut during the Award Ceremony on 22 November 2018 in the A’DAM Tower Amsterdam. Master of ceremony was Francesca Vanthielen. The Silver went to the Combo Excelsior, a multiple-use container with many new innovative features. The elements used (walls, base, lid) have a superior strength/ volume ratio. The floating hinges, ergonomic sidewall latches and self-locking lid provide easy and safe operation with minimal risk of damage to the product or the operator. And thanks to its modular construction, all
individual parts can be easily replaced in the field, further extending the life of the product, says Silver winner Schoeller Allibert. The Bronze was for Arcwise, a patented alternative way to produce corrugated board. The end result is a corrugated board that is easy to bend, in a way that even, “fluent” (not kinked) round shapes can now be made of corrugated board without any problems. Arcwise is predestined because of its application possibilities to be combined with round shapes such as bottles, tubes and cans, and to be able to realise beautiful round shapes in displays. This from a threefold point of view: round shapes are significantly stronger than square shapes, in addition, the Arcwise corrugated board uses less material, so your carbon footprint is smaller and, finally, consumers rate round shapes more positively than square shapes, which can boost sales, according to the Bronze winning Brohl Wellpappe. With De Gouden Noot, NVC Netherlands Packaging Centre stimulates ground breaking packaging innovations worldwide every two years. De Gouden Noot (‘gold walnut’) owes its name to the unique trophy containing a solid gold walnut, symbol of truly ‘holistic’ innovative packaging. Jury chairman Professor Renee Wever

The ten Finalists of this 30th edition will be on display at the NVC booth at the interpack2020 in Düsseldorf, Germany and on the NVC website after the first jury round. The Award Ceremony of the 30th edition of De Gouden Noot is 8 October 2020, again in the A’DAM Tower Amsterdam.
