Publisher’s letter

I

t’s Fall and we’re three! Hello my fashion lovers, I’m so excited to share our three year anniversary edition with you. This not only marks our three year anniversary of PRESS The Fashion but, our two year anniversary of our sister magazine PRESS The Beauty! This past Summer was the first Summer I spent the majority of my time in Ottawa since getting into this business in 2009 as a fashion stylist and writer. I was blessed to have a career that took off fairly quickly with my work taking me to Toronto, Montreal, New York and places in between regularly by 2010. Then you add in the personal trips to San Diego, Paris, Milan, Rome and so on, and suddenly you realize, “when is the last time I gave Ottawa that attention?” So I did. While it did sadly translate to me working more, I did get to see more of what Ottawa has to offer in the Summer. I pull a lot of inspiration from the traveling that I do, I’ve talked about it in past editor’s letters. Inspiration is something that’s all around and I was more than willing to allow myself to rediscover what inspired me so much about Ottawa that I wanted to start a magazine here in the first place. Ottawa is nice in a sense because it is a bigger city that still holds a small town feel. I grew up in a small town, so maybe that’s why I connected with Ottawa so much when I moved here for school. To be completely honest though, I think it’s the people. Some of the people I’ve met in the business here are honestly some of the most hard working, talented, dedicated and honest people I’ve ever met. Though a small community, I think Ottawa’s little fashion group has a great deal of potential and they always inspire me tremendously. Sometimes it’s that salon owner who pushed against everything to ensure her salon opened. The fashion stylist who has been in fashion for half of her life and is now living her dream seeing the smiles of her subjects after working with them on television screens across the country. How about the photographer who is always hustling and perfecting her craft? The re-toucher who loves his job so much that he doesn’t really seem to mind working 12 hours a day. The television host who seems to put as much (if not more) into his community as anything else important to him in his life. It’s those people who inspire me this edition. Not some mind blowing art piece, not visiting half a dozen cities between two countries in a three week period of time, not the beaches of Del Mar. It’s all of those fashion entrepreneurs who’ve put everything into this and who always will! To our readers, contributors, supporters and family, thank you. Thank you for letting a young man who loves fashion more than most should, live his dream and see his work hit another anniversary mark. To my editors, past and present, thank you. You all worked hard in some way to get us to this point. (especially this one)

The ‘PRESS-tigious’

A little bit more about some of our talented contributors.

Jane & Jane ‘PTF’ LOVES Jane & Jane! So of course, they’re our cover photographers for our anniversary edition this year. We tapped the magic making duo to capture our cover muse in all of her glory! P.S. Jane & Jane’s work is everywhere right now and we know they’re just getting started. A pair to keep your eye on? Yes!

Angie Di Battista Toronto based Di Battista is an emerging makeup artist that if you’re not already watching out for, you really should! From brides, to fashion models, Di Battista is turning out some of the slickest beauty work we’ve seen in a while.

Marie-Michèle Hayeur Montreal based Hayeur is a young and already established photographer, whose clients range from editorial and commercial, to fashion look books and campaigns. With a stellar eye for fashion, we look forward to seeing what inspires her next.

Katia Pershin Easily one of the best fashion photographers in Ottawa, Pershin offers a clear vision with editorials and for her clients. Her ability to listen to her clients’ requests and grow her vision from there is one we appreciate and value. Here’s hoping this talent doesn’t get snagged from Ottawa too soon!

Emma Beauty isn’t just face value and that’s something our ‘PRESS The Beauty’ cover girl is a great example of. Check out ‘PTB’ for Emma’s full editorial and interview.

Lauren The enchanting beauty that is Lauren is one we’ve wanted to capture on our cover for more than a moment. With her disarming beauty and haunting gaze, we knew we had our cover star from the click of the first shot.
