I
f you don’t have dental coverage or feel insurance is too restrictive and costly there is another option: the EDP Dental plan. This is how we explain it at EDP Dental: Gain Access to In-Network Dentists Save on every visit with a dentist in our plan’s nationwide dental network. Dentists within our provider network have agreed to provide the same quality care for the discounted rates listed in the fee schedules. Everyone Wins! - Dentists get more patients and keep their dental practice running and agree to the reduced fee schedule in return. With EDP, dental coverage also includes specialists, such as, oral surgeons, orthodontists, periodontists, endodontists, and prosthodontists. These visits are charged at a 25% reduction of participating specialist’s regular fees. Navy Announces Plan to Survey Wreck Site off Long Island Coast
The Navy announced plans to survey the wreck of the World War I U.S. Navy cruiser San Diego (ACR 6), on which six American Sailors lost their lives when she was sunk as a result of enemy action off the coast of Long Island on July 19, 1918. The survey’s objective is to assess the condition of the wreck site and determine if the ship, the only major warship lost by the United States in World War I, was sunk as a result of a German submarinelaunched torpedo or mine. Ultimately, data gathered will help inform the management of the sunken military craft, which lies only a few miles south of Long Island. The announcement came just weeks after the 99th anniversary of the sinking of the ship, and the survey, which was planned for September was timed to allow researchers to conduct a thorough examination of the site and prepare, then release, their findings around the date of the 100th anniversary. The U.S. is currently commemorating the 100th anniversary of its entry into World War I. The survey, led by the Naval History and Heritage Command’s Under-

Additional research support will be provided by the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division (NSWCCD), and the Fire Island U.S. Coast Guard Station (USCGSFI) will provide essential logistical support. NHHC is responsible for the management, research, preservation, and interpretation of the U.S. Navy's collection of sunken military craft which includes more than 2,500 shipwrecks and 14,000 aircraft wrecks dispersed globally. 3 Tips to Make Finances Add Up for the Spouse Left Behind By Peter Bombara
T
raditional wedding vows usually include the phrase “till death do us part,” but it’s not a part of the ritual most couples want to dwell on. Financial professionals, though, say ignoring the eventuality of death is unwise when it comes to a couple’s decisions about retirement and money. “The decisions you make today can affect your spouse’s financial situation after you pass away,” says Peter Bombara, CEO and founder of PCB Financial Advisory Group (www.pcbfinancial.com). “A lot of people aren’t comfortable talking about the subject because they don’t want to think about their husband or wife dying. But you have choices to make about your pension, your Social Security and your investments, and the implications of those choices can have a lasting impact on your surviving spouse.” For example, both a monthly pension payment and a monthly Social Security payment could disappear upon a spouse’s death, leaving the survivor to managed finances with a reduced income. Bombara says couples, especially those nearing retirement, should: • Consider pension options carefully. Not everyone has a pension any more, but those
who do may have a few options available to them. A pension pays a set monthly amount for the rest of the person’s life. But often there is a survivor benefit that allows the person’s surviving spouse to continue to receive a check after the pensioner dies. Choosing the survivor’s benefit, though, means the pensioner receives a reduced amount while alive. “Some people choose the highest dollar amount so they have the most money coming in each month,” Bombara says. “But if they choose the largest amount, their spouse gets nothing when they die.” • Weigh Social Security decisions. A surviving spouse can be eligible for their deceased partner’s full Social Security benefit, but when they claim that benefit is a major factor in how large those monthly checks are. For example, a surviving spouse can qualify for reduced benefits as early as age 60, but they can get full benefits if they are at their full retirement age. • Seek professional advice if you’re confused. A financial professional can help you better understand the options available for both your pension and your Social Security. A professional also can provide advice on how to manage your assets so that the surviving spouse is in bet-
ter shape to handle a potential drop in income. “Most people want their spouse to do well financially after they pass away,” Bombara says. “So, as unpleasant as the conversation might seem, they really do need to talk about the money situation and make sure they have a good plan in place.” Peter Bombara, CEO and founder of PCB Financial Advisory Group (www.pcbfinancial.com), he has been featured in many publications on both the local and national levels, such as FOX, NBC, CBS and ABC. 50+

60 is the New 30 By David Essel
O
h, my Lord! It finally happened, Do you remember when you were a kid, and you thought a 60-year-old person was about as close to death as anyone you could imagine? Do you remember 30 years ago, when many 60-year-olds were barely able to function in the competitive business world? To be in shape? To be a vital part of a healthy, sexual, intimate relationship? Thank God times have changed! And they’ve changed in the most beautiful ways ever. Number one best-selling author, counselor, life coach and radio host David Essel (www.davidessel.com) is one of those people who can attest to the fact that being 60 years old is the start of something big. Something new. Something big. And something vital in our society today. Here's what David has to say about aging. “If someone would've asked me 40 years ago what my life would look like at age 61, it would’ve been a far cry from the way I live today. And I’m not alone. But, if you want great results in life you've got to be willing to put out the effort. Number one. Diet. Beginning in your 40s, if you're not paying really close attention to eating clean, your 60s are going to feel like someone who's 110 years of age. Diet is the number one cause of disease in our country today. So many of these conditions can be tied directly to our diet. If you want to feel like you're 30 when you're 60 years you need to be eating a super healthy, clean diet. Lots of lean protein. Lots of vegetables. Medium amount of fruit. And a lower amount of complex carbohydrates like bread, cookies, crackers, rice and pasta. I recommend to my clients, if they want to lead the health-

iest life possible, to eat only organic foods, or as many as possible. Number two. Until I attacked my addiction to alcohol and drugs years ago, I would not have the energy, or look as young as I do today if I continued drinking on a regular basis. Look at your darkside. What habits do you have, alcohol, smoking, fast food, gambling, etc., etc., that could be aging you before your times? Work with A counselor or a coach starting right now! When you decrease your stress, you increase your vitality. Number three. Exercise. Why do we have 80-percent or more of Americans who are sedentary in life? People in their 60s and 70s who look and feel like they’re in their 30s, can attribute most of it to an exercise program not just genetics. We have to make an all-out commitment to a daily exercise program, which of course could be uncomfortable at first, if we want to have the energy and vitality of a 30-year-old. And it sure is worth it. Exercise five to six times a week, and 12 months from now you will have a radically transformed body. Number four. Help others. When you're willing to help others who are in need of your service, it's amazing how much more energy you bring into this world. Some people do this through activities like Habitat for Humanity, through their church, working with scouts or the Boy’s and Girl’s clubs of America. It doesn't matter how you offer your time and expertise, but it's crucial to give back, in order to feel like you're in your 30s when you're in your 60s 70s or 80s." Number five. Daily meditation, prayer, journaling is an absolute must in order to calm the mind, open the spirit, and take on the energy of a 30year-old when you're 60, 70 or older. Over the years so many studies have shown the connection between high functioning immune system's and people who regularly are involved in some type of spiritual practice. To wrap all of this up, I hit my first number one best-selling book at the age of 60. Even though I had written eight previous books, and have been writing books for over 21 years, the culmination of all of my effort finally took place at 60. And you can do the same thing. Never give up. David Essel is one of the millions of Americans who is living proof that you can feel and look like you're in your 30s when you're in your 60s… But it will take a concerted effort on your part to change your lifestyle to reap the benefits you desire. 50+

Throw the Ultimate Tailgate ootball season is back, and that means it’s time to stock up on all the tailgating essentials. Nailing the food lineup is key because few things can ruin a good game like getting “hangry” before kickoff. This year, kick your game up a notch with simple tailgating recipes that bring the perfect blend of flavor and heat. These easy recipes will get you enjoying the festivities in no time, whether you’re tailgating at the stadium or homegating on your couch. No matter which team you and your friends are rooting for, there’s one thing that all football fans can agree on: wings are the MVPs of game day. Wings have been holding the line ever since 1964, when Frank’s RedHot was the key ingredient in the first-ever Buffalo wings. After all these years, there’s a reason wings keep their defending champ status: they’re easy to make and a surefire way to deliver that classic Buffalo flavor. Just bake the wings for half an hour to get that crispy coating, toss with your two-ingredient buffalo sauce and you’re all set. Serve them up with blue cheese dressing and celery sticks and you’ll be on your way to the ultimate tailgate. In order to make sure you’ve got the win locked in, have more than one play in your back pocket. Turn to another tried-and-true, one-pot classic: chili. Don’t overthink it – all you need to do is brown some ground beef, add some onion then crushed tomatoes, beans, hot sauce and

seasoning. All you need is 15 minutes to build flavor and you’re good to go. Even easier, let your slow cooker do the work. Finish it off with shredded cheese, scallions, sour cream and more hot sauce, and you’ll have the hearty chili you need to keep the tailgate going strong. Enjoy your chili on its own or spoon it on top of hot dogs, nachos and whatever else you have on your plate. Buying a Home With a Non-Spouse By Patrick Simonis
hen multiple people participate in a home purchase, they may not be married. They might be in a legal domestic partnership, committed relationship, common law marriage, or even strictly business partners. When it comes to buying a home with someone you're not married to, there are things to take into consideration before making the very big decision of buying the home.
W
Credit Surprises For buyers applying for a mortgage loan, maintaining the same level of credit between being approved and the final closing is extremely important for a successful transaction. The best way to prevent credit surprises: avoid making large financial decisions prior to closing.
Decide On the Type of Title When buying a home with someone you're not married to, there are three different ways to take title: Sole Ownership - This is where only one person's name is on the title/deed, which means that one person is the only legal owner. Sometimes this choice is a good idea if one partner has poor credit and doesn't want to be part of the mortgage decision. Joint Tenants - This option is available for those owners that want to have equal shares of the property. Both a benefit and a risk of this type of title is that one partner cannot sell the house without the other partner's permission. Should one of the Discuss and Plan Who Pays What partners die, the "right of survivorship" guarantees the other partBuying a home is a big financial decision, and requires a sound ner inherits the other half of the property. In most states, Joint Tenunderstanding of who will be responsible for what. This includes ants comes with the right of survivorship, while in others it will paying any mortgage payments, household bills, property taxes, etc. need to be specifically stated on the title. Tenants in Common If you're purchasing a property with someone you're not legally This is an option that allows multiple owners of a home/property, married to, it's important to spell out and have a firm written 'conand for the owners to possess unequal shares. With this type of title, tract' regarding who pays for what or how much. it is possible for any one of the owners to sell his/her share of the property at any time. Should one party die, that party's share is left Have a Joint Bank Account to whomever the party wished; the share doesn't automatically go While joining bank accounts with the person you buy a home to the other owner(s). If this title is chosen, it's important to get the with isn't a necessity, it is a good idea to have a shared account in percentages in writing, or the law can assume an equal split. 50+ which each person deposits their share of the home costs. Share Financial Information Sharing financial information is a big must when it comes to buying property with anyone (whether married or not). Financial information includes everything from income/salary to all debt (any current loans, student loan debt, car loans, etc.). For couples who are not married, the mortgage lender will treat each person as an individual, meaning the lower of the two credit scores will take precedence when it comes to the terms of the loan.
Out Of The Pocket Costs For Certified Home Health Aides (HHA) Are On the Rise!
T
he assistance a person might need to remain living at home can vary and so can the cost. If a person needs assistance such as a certified home health aide (HHA) or companion virtually all the costs are considered “out-of-pocket” expenses. Considering that the cost for an aide at $18-25.00 per hour for only 6 hours a day might total as much as $40, 000.00 a year the financial burden can be extraordinary difficult for adult children, partners, and other family members who often must shoulder this responsibility. Ways Dogs Can Improve Seniors’ Health
urry friends can play a significant role in pet owners’ lives. The old saying goes, “dogs are man’s best friend,” and research shows they may be more than that. In fact, they just might be the key to keeping seniors active. According to a study conducted by the University of Lincoln and Glasgow Caledonian University in collaboration with Mars Petcare Waltham Centre for Pet Nutrition, dog owners 65 and older were found to walk over 20 minutes more a day than seniors who did not have canine companions. The study documented 3 key conclusions: 1: Dog owners walked further and for longer than non-dog owners. 2: Dog owners were more likely to reach recommended activity levels. 3: Dog owners had fewer periods of sitting down. “Older adult dog owners are more active than those without dogs and are also more

likely to meet recommendations for daily physical activity,” said Nancy Gee, human animal interaction researcher at Waltham. “It’s great to recognize how pets can help improve seniors’ lives.” Walking with your dog can help both the pet and owner get in shape. According to the study, on average, dog owners more often participated in 30 minutes a day of moderate physical activity and achieved 2,760 additional steps. However, the benefits of pet ownership go beyond physical activity. Pets can play a significant role in improving people’s lives, which ultimately can make pet owners happier and healthier. Not only do pets serve as companions in their own right, studies have shown that dog owners can get to know their neighbors through their pets. Pets can even help facili-

tate the initial meeting and conversation. For older adults who live alone or in a group facility, having a pet is also a great way to build relationships with others. As senior citizens are celebrated on upcoming days that acknowledge older adults, it turns out living with a pet can be a healthy choice for seniors in more ways than one. Tremendous Advances in Treatment of Varicose Veins
V
ein problems are common in the U.S. and around the world. By age 50, nearly 40 percent of women and 20 percent of men have some type of significant vein disorder. In a normally functioning vein, the valves prevent blood flowing in the wrong direction down towards the foot. In a varicose vein, the valves are damaged and they do not close properly. This allows venous blood flow to reverse when muscles relax, leading to elevated lower extremity venous pressures. This process is known as venous insufficiency or venous reflux. While venous insufficiency is not considered a serious health problem it can cause many leg issues for both men and women including spider veins and varicose veins. Spider veins consist of small clusters of red, blue or purple veins that are commonly found on calves, thighs and ankles. Varicose veins are enlarged, tortuous veins that often appear beneath the skin. Symptoms include: cramping, throbbing, burning and swelling. If left untreated, severe varicose veins can ultimately lead to chronic leg swelling, eczema-type symptoms, skin thickening and discoloration, and even ulcerations that won’t heal until the veins are treated. Within the last few years, there have been tremendous advances in the treatment of varicose veins. The most dramatic advance has been the introduction of non-surgical techniques that have virtually replaced traditional surgical therapy known as vein stripping. These minimally invasive solutions to varicose vein disease offer: elimination of a hospital-based procedure, quicker recovery times and an overall improved patient satisfaction. The EVLT procedure is a minimally invasive laser procedure that has replaced conventional stripping surgery for the treatment of varicose veins. Outdated stripping procedures were painful, required general anesthesia,
19
and had significant downtime. This has been replaced with a procedure performed in an office or clinic, requires no incisions and no hospital stay is required. This technique treats the large varicose veins using only local anesthesia and can be performed in about 30 minutes. The procedure leaves no visible scarring; there is minimal postoperative discomfort; a quick recovery period; and the patient gains immediate relief from their symptoms. Patients can resume all their normal activities soon after their procedure. EVLT, when done in a symptomatic patient, is a procedure which is covered by most major-medical plans including Medicare. All patients with symptomatic vein insufficiency can be treated, almost regardless of age. We have treated patients as young as 16 and as old as 95. For more information, contact The North Shore Vein Center — Long Island’s largest, comprehensive vein treatment center. The North Shore Vein Center is a fully certified outpatient surgical facility by the A A A ASF and A A AHC, and is the only fully certified IAC Vein Center in Nassau County, Long Island and Queens. NIST Study Suggests Frailty Makes Elderly More Likely to Die in Home Fires
A
new study by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) shows scientifically for the first time that an individual’s ability to respond quickly to a residential fire determines who dies and who gets injured. The findings suggest that vulnerability to fires in homes could be mapped for communities across the United States based on age demographics, and in turn, measures designed to prevent fire deaths and injuries could be targeted to the appropriate populations to maximize their effectiveness. The study appears in the research journal Injury Prevention. In their study, David Butry, chief of the Applied Economics Office in NIST’s Engineering Laboratory, and his colleague, NIST economist Stanley Gilbert, used U.S. Census data to define the populations of interest; data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System, a national database managed by the Department of Homeland Security, to document the number of fire events and injuries/fatalities from fires; and statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on deaths from natural causes for comparison with fire-related fatalities. The researchers used the National Fire Protection Association definition for homes that excludes
other residences such as nursing homes, other assisted living facilities, institutions and hotels. They focused on the five-year period from 2009 to 2013.
PHOTO Credit: U.S. Fire Administration What Butry and Gilbert found during that interval was that home fires resulted in an average of 2,740 deaths and 13,300 injuries per year, accounting for 84 percent and 77 percent of all fire-related fatalities and injuries, respectively. Thirty-two percent of all home fire deaths were among the elderly age 65 and older, although they represented only 13 percent of the U.S. pop-
ulation. In contrast, adults between ages 20 and 49 made up 42 percent of the population but represented only 25 percent of home fire deaths. The opposite proved true for injuries from home fires. Butry and Gilbert found that adults ages 20 to 49 experienced 50 percent of the nonfatal injuries while those aged 65 or older were recorded at 13 percent. Neither the disproportionally high death rate among the elderly nor the high injury rate among young to middleaged adults could be completely explained by the overall risk of a fire occurring. The findings of the NIST study will be put to work immediately as they are incorporated into a recently launched national interactive online tool known as the Fire-Community Assessment/Response Evaluation System (link is external), or FireCARES. “The goal of FireCARES is to assist emergency responders in making sound decisions, based on quantifiable data,” said Lori Moore-Merrell, assistant to the general president of the International Association of Fire Fighters and FireCARES project manager. “The insights gleaned from this study not only have immediate impact on the risk assessment portion of the FireCARES project, but also on overall emergency response planning in local communities.” 50+

Pain Interrupted... Life Restarted Radio Frequency Lesioning - New Hope for Long Term Suffers of Back Pain!
C
hronic pain is a heavy burden that consumes and limits your life. Often there can be a long journey from one failed body part surgery to the next or medications that do too little to numb the pain and too much to numb the patient. Every day, pain takes its toll on you mentally and physically; turning you from participant to spectator in your own life. If you or you or a loved one would like to experience a life restarted then it may be time to try an alternative treatment. Radio Frequency Lesioning or Rhizotomy is a procedure that has helped many patient who have not been successful with other treatments. Frequently chronic neck and back pain is caused by damaged lumbar facet joints and unfortunately due to injury, disease or age repair of this underlining problem can only go so far. Now thanks to improved techniques and advanced equipment pain specialists can target the medial branch nerves in the lumbar spine with a minimally invasive office procedure, which takes just 15-30 minutes and is virtually painless. These nerves carry pain signals from dam-
aged facet joints and when treated this way, help reduce or eliminate the associated pain. About 75% or more of our patients experience dramatic to complete relief for over a year over more, even those that have been unable to receive long term success with other treatments. Overview and Treatment Heat from radio waves is used to treat painful facet joints in the back. First, you are given medicine to relax you. The skin and tissue of the affected area is numbed. A small tube called a “cannula” is inserted and with a video x-ray device called a “fluoroscope” the cannula is guided to the tiny nerves in your spine that carry pain signals to your brain from your damaged facet joints. A thin electrode is inserted through the cannula. When the electrode is in place, a small amount of heat is applied to the nerve disrupting its ability to transmit pain signals. After the procedure a small band-aid is applied and after a brief period of monitoring you are sent home. You may feel some soreness and even still have a little pain for a week or so, but gradually you
will experience the long term relief that this treatment promises. Patients are permitted to return to work the next day. You have questions – We have answers Our treatment program at Pain Management & Rejuvenation of Long Island is individualized to meet your specific needs so the first step is to be evaluated. Please call for an appointment. Your health insurance will probably cover this procedure and our practice accepts most types of health insurance including Medicare, and worker’s comp cases. 50+ Dr. Mehran Golpariani is Director at Pain Management & Rejuvenation of Long Island. He is Board Certified in Pain Management, as well as Anesthesiology You may get help with questions about pain management by calling 631-474-2300.

What Does Aging In Place Mean?
A
ging in place is a term used to describe a person living in the residence of their choice as they age, for as long as they are able. This includes being able to have any services (or other support) they might need over time as their needs change. Who wouldn’t want to live as long as possible in their own home without moving in to some type of institution? At home, a senior feels most comfortable with their environment. Not to mention a great saving in costs. If medical care is not an issue, then a professional caregiver or companion through a non-medical home care agency more than likely is sufficient. Adult children of seniors serve as primary caregivers to the ill or elderly loved ones. Inhome care assistance (through home care agencies) allow family caregivers to carry on with their own life priorities like work, child care, spousal relationship, and have more time for themselves. In general, receiving non-medical home care reduces unavoidable hospital readmission, and research show that individuals are recuperating

New Advancements In Weight Loss Surgery? The Gastric Sleeve.
A
s founder of Long Island Laparoscopic Doctorssm, patients often lament to me “Doctor, I am FAT. I have tried diet after diet, pills, and gym memberships - nothing sticks! I have lost lots of weight, but it always comes back. What’s wrong with me? Why don’t I have the will power to stay on a diet and keep the weight off?” Many people believe that weight loss is a matter of willpower and that people who are overweight or obese are lazy or weak. This sort of thinking is a product of American culture, which teaches that with enough determination you can do anything. Unfortunately, it leads to the belief that if you can’t stop compulsive eating with a combination of prayer and will power, then you must be a weak person. That kind of viewpoint is just wrong. It is one of the reasons why obesity has become the most common cause of preventable death in America today! Forty five million Americans reportedly are on diets at any given time, yet according to the Centers for Disease Control, 36 percent of American adults are obese (BMI 30+) and another 33 percent are overweight.
The Gastric Sleeve – A life changing new procedure Together with my associates Drs. Thompson and Leung, we have established one of the safest and most comprehensive surgical weight loss programs in New York. Our emphasis has been on treatoffering ments that are virtually safe, pain free and scarless. Our patients experience a fast recovery and many are back to work in days. If you are one of the thousands of Long Islanders who are 60-80lbs or more overweight and have tried unsuccessfully to lose weight and keep it off we have great news about an important procedure that our team has been on the vanguard of performing for patients just like you called the gastric sleeve. This technique is less invasive than other procedures, but doesn’t require monthly adjustments or an implant in your body. Because it eliminates the “hunger hormone Ghrelin” our patients lose significant amounts of weight quickly and permanently without the “fire” that dieters normally experience. If you suffer from illnesses associated with obesity like Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and joint
pain – the gastric sleeve can almost overnight eliminate or reduce these related conditions. We have helped open the door to a more active, happier life for many of your neighbors and we would like to do the same for you. Our program is comprehensive and you will receive support before and after your procedure by our team of doctors, nutritionists and counselors. That is, we can help you choose the treatment best for you to take the weight off rapidly and keep it off permanent. Dr. Atwa is a skilled surgeon known for his caring and compassionate bedside manner, garnishing awards as Top Surgeon and the Most Compassionate Doctor awards (2011-2016) He is board certified in general surgery with a mini-fellowship in bariatric surgery. He currently is Chief & Director of Department of Surgery at Mather and St. Charles Hospitals, Port Jefferson.
