Bipartisan Legislation to Create Permanent Legislative Fix to Protect Vietnam Veterans Exposed to Agent Orange During Their Service in Vietnam U.S. Senators Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and Steve Daines (R-MT) recently announced the re-introduction of the Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Act, bipartisan legislation to ensure that thousands of Blue Water Navy veterans can receive the disability and health care benefits they earned after their exposure to the dangerous pesticide Agent Orange while fighting in the Vietnam War. “Decades after the Vietnam War ended, thousands of Vietnam veterans are sick today because they were exposed to Agent Orange while serving off the Vietnamese coast during the war,” said Senator Gillibrand. “They urgently need treatment and care, yet for years the VA has refused to provide it to them because of an arbitrary rule that denied benefits to these Blue Water Navy veterans. Even though the court has ruled that the VA must provide these benefits, there is no guarantee it will happen. Congress must create a permanent legislative fix by passing the bipartisan Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Act.” During the Vietnam War, the U.S. military sprayed approximately 20 million gallons of Agent Orange in Vietnam to remove jungle foliage. This toxic chemical had devastating health effects on millions serving in Vietnam. In 1991, Congress passed a law requiring the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to provide presumptive coverage to all Vietnam veterans
with illnesses that the Institute of Medicine has directly linked to Agent Orange exposure, including those who were stationed on ships off the Vietnamese coast, also known as Blue Water Navy veterans. However, in 2002, the VA decided that it would only cover veterans who could prove that they had orders for “boots on the ground” during the Vietnam War. This exclusion prevented thousands of sailors from receiving benefits even though they had significant Agent Orange exposure from drinking and bathing in contaminated water just offshore. The US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled earlier this year in favor of Alfred Procopio, Jr., a Blue Water Navy veteran, in his lawsuit against the Department of Veterans Affairs. Although it appears that the VA will not appeal this decision and will begin providing benefits to most Blue Water Navy veterans, passing the Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Act would codify into law protection for these veterans. Delivery of Health Care to Long Island Vets Discussed In March, Congressman Lee Zeldin (R, NY-1) met with Director of the New York/New Jersey Veterans Affairs (VA) Health Care Network Dr. Joan McInerney, Interim Director of the Northport VAMC Dr. Cathy Cruise, Deputy Network Director of the New York/New Jersey VA Health Care Network Tom Sharpe, and Director of the New York Harbor Health Care System Martina Parauda from to discuss the delivery of health care to veterans on Long Island. 50+

Helping Older Adults with Low Vision Resources for living an active and enjoyable life By Dr. Steve Schoenbart, OD An optometrist in Garden City and Fresh Meadows, he specializes in optometry and low vision rehabilitation
M
any people would consider losing their eyesight among one of the worst losses they could endure. While most of us will not suffer from complete blindness, millions currently live with some form of visual impairment. Sadly, there are some 18.3 million American adults between the ages of 18 and 64 and 7.3 million American adults 65 years and older report experiencing significant vision loss. What is low vision? Low vision is significant vision impairment, which is characterized by either reduced visual acuity (to) or reduced field of view that usually results from serious disease or an injury. The vision loss can’t be fully corrected. For patients with low vision loss of the ability to read, use the computer, and perform other tasks that most people take for granted such as driving or watching TV can be traumatic. What causes Low Vision? Low Vision can be caused by a number of disorders. If you have Macular Degeneration (Wet or Dry), Diabetic Retinopathy, Retinitis Pigmentosa, Glaucoma, Albinism or (Stargardt’s Disease), Early detection of any changes is critical for managing eye disease and preventing vision loss. What can be done to help people with low vision? Patients with low vision are often told that there is nothing more that can be done for them. That perspective is wrong! While medically there may not be anything that can be done to reverse vision loss, in many cases a low vision optometrist can help the patient to regain their independence and do the things they love, by prescribing advanced optics (miniature telescopic glasses) that are custom designed for them. Many patients are amazed that they can drive, read, watch TV, sew, play cards, see faces, and many more activities that they thought was no longer an option for them. In my practice serving patients with low vision in New York City, Brooklyn, Queens, and Long Island, I see countless patients regain their independence and hope with custom-made low vision devices that help them do the things they love most. Many patients try the miniature telescopic glasses that we prescribe for them on in the office and are blown away by the results. Additionally we explain to patients to get those results requires high-quality lighting at their home or office. For A Free Low Vision Phone Consultation or To Schedule An Appointment Call 516-219-8690 Dr. Steven Schoenbart, OD is a low vision specialist and with over 40 year experience of helping people with vision loss. Huntington’s Lois Morton’s ‘Second Act’ Thrills Long Island Audiences
L
ois Morton is the epitome of reinventing oneself after retirement. The Huntington resident and Glen Cove native has gone from being an educator and a therapist to performing, writing and storytelling — and at 85 years old, there’s just no stopping her! Her social and often comedic commentaries on topical subjects such as cell phones, diets, therapy and road rage have made her audiences laugh out loud at her keen insight and sharp wit. “I was a caregiver for a decade when my husband Henry, who was a professor, suffered from Alzheimer’s,” Morton said. “He passed away in 1999.” (Morton has two children, Philip and Amy, and three grandchildren.) The inimitable singer/songwriter Lois Morton, 85, performs original and topical shows at venues across Long Island. She loves adding humor to her shows, and she enjoys singing in different languages. Photo courtesy Lois Morton
Morton’s new career path didn’t come out of the blue. She began writing in the late 1960s. But that career was put on hold for quite a while. Years later, songs from her debut CD, “As I See It” were playing on the air in the Chicago area. She credits her friend Larry Moser, who often accompanies her on accordion and guitar, for giving her the push she needed. “When I first moved to Huntington, I had no idea what I would be doing. I went to him for guitar lessons, and he said, ‘Why aren’t you doing your own shows?’ I was surprised but it sparked something in me.” Morton’s shows are filled with original, humorous songs about the stresses of modern society, and they capture the essence of our contemporary culture — a universal humor everyone can relate to and an antidote for the madness of everyday life. She’s received many accolades and rave reviews for her original performances. Morton brings to life the legendary Edith Piaf in a lecture-cabaret program featuring songs and stories. “Because I love singing in other languages, I do a whole show, a kind of lecture-cabaret, about Edith Piaf, and another called "Edith, Marlene, Sophie...and Me.” Morton recently performed "Raisins and Almonds, Jewish Songs from the Heart" to a packed house at Shelter Rock Library. Morton has some advice to the senior crowd: “If there are things that you really wish you had done, and you’re still getting around, it’s not too late to jump out of the box and challenge your limitations. If something’s calling you – answer it!” 50+ Mary Malloy is a retired editor and journalist, and a don’t-quit-your-day-job singer. Long Island-Based Volunteer Puppy Raiser Needed Raise A Guide Dog for Someone Who Is Visually Impaired and Give the Gift of Second Sight
T
he Guide Dog Foundation is looking for passionate Long Island-based volunteers to provide loving homes to future guide dog puppies. Puppy raisers take home an eight-weekold puppy and care for it until it is between 14 and 18 months old. Puppy raisers play a vital role in the development of future assistance dogs: they spend countless hours caring for, teaching, and socializing the pups. They are responsible for socializing their future guide dog puppy and are asked to provide common day-to-day socializing opportunities and exposure to new and diverse surroundings. A wellsocialized puppy will have fewer adjustments to make when it comes back to the Foundation for formal training. “Our puppy raisers have an undeniable love, passion, and kindness that they each share. It is an experience like no other and, while it requires work on the raiser’s part, our raisers are left with a priceless feeling of the good they’re contributing
to the world,” said Lorin Bruzzese, Puppy Program Manager, Guide Dog Foundation The puppy raiser is also required to teach the puppy basic obedience, such as how to walk on a leash, sit and stay, down, and to come when called. For anyone interested in becoming a puppy raiser, you can apply directly online at Puppy.GuideDog.org or to learn about the requirements. 50+

Every four minutes, someone dies of stroke. • Every year, about 795,000 people in the United States have a stroke. About 610,000 of these are first or new strokes; 185,000 are recurrent. • Stroke is an important cause of disability. Stroke reduces mobility in more than half of stroke survivors age 65 and over. • Stroke costs the nation $34 billion annually, including the cost of health care services, medications, and lost productivity. • You can’t control some stroke risk factors, like heredity, age, gender,
and ethnicity. Some medical conditions—including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes, overweight or obesity, and previous stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA)—can also raise your stroke risk. Avoiding smoking and drinking too much alcohol, eating a balanced diet, and getting exercise are all choices you can make to reduce your risk. New Hope to Treat Dangerous Triple-Negative Breast Cancer?
T
riple-negative breast cancer is the most aggressive subtype of the disease, and people who have this form of breast cancer often end up with tumor recurrence and metastatic disease despite taking standard forms of chemotherapy. Now a team of researchers led by Lori Chan, PhD, Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacological Sciences in the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University, have identified a specific gene involved in the cancer stem cell (CSC) population process of triple-negative breast cancer. By blocking this gene’s action, tumor response to chemotherapy is improved. Their findings, published in Cell Death & Disease, illustrate a potential new way to treat incurable triplenegative breast cancer. The problem with triple-negative breast cancer is that the tissue making up this form of the disease harbors enriched CSC populations in tumors. Current chemotherapies to treat triple-negative breast cancer kill the cancer but spare much of the CSC populations, which trigger recurrence.
“We identified a core molecular pathway that controls CSC activity and a key gene in that process called USP2,” said Dr. Chan. “USP2 is an essential gene that upregulates CSCs in triplenegative breast cancer. We used a genetic approach to block the action of USP2, and by doing
that discovered this eliminates the CSC population and re-sensitizes the tumor response to chemotherapy.” Therefore, by blocking this gene chemotherapy resistance is reduced, or eliminated, which
potentially is a curative way to treat the disease, Dr. Chan emphasized. Unlike with other forms of breast cancer, hormonal or antibody therapies against triple-negative breast cancer are not effective when there is tumor recurrence. Dr. Chan’s co-investigators include Jiabei He, a doctoral student in the Department of Pharmacological Sciences, other scientists from Pharmacological Sciences and the Stony Brook University Cancer Center, and researchers in the Department of Pathology and Cell Biology at Columbia University Medical Center. Queen of the Road Motorcycles, crowns and living your dream By Mary Malloy
M
aureen Griffin, 62, is a self-proclaimed “late bloomer.” Although her dreams of being on the stage began when she was a very young girl, she didn’t get into professional theatre until she was in her 30s, when she sang and danced Off-Broadway with Light Opera of Manhattan and acted with several theatre companies in NYC, including Abingdon, Wings, and Love Creek. “When I was younger, all I ever wanted to do was to sing, dance and act,” Griffin-Damone recalled. “But I was discouraged, I was told that I started too late, that I wasn’t going to make much money at it … people thought I was younger than I was, but when they found out my real age, it worked against me. I was still dancing in chorus when I was 33. I was the ‘grandmother’ of the chorus,” she laughed. The Road to Love “During this time — I was 51 — I met my husband, Curtis,” Griffin-Damone said. “He offered to give me a ride on his motorcycle, and my response was: “Let’s get this straight. I am not getting on the back of a motorcycle!” I said only crazy people ride motorcycles, and it’s true! But you’ve got to follow your heart and your passions. I grew to love it … it’s addicting. Needless to say, a few months later I had my own license and rode my own motorcycle to Florida.” Maureen and Curtis were married in 2015, and on their honeymoon they traveled 10,000 miles around the country for six weeks, some of it with fellow bikers. They toured Niagara Falls, the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Mt. Rushmore, Dragon’s Tail, and the Grand Ole Opry, among other scenic and iconic spots. “We traveled all around on our bikes,” Griffin-Damone said. “Ten years later, I now have over 116,000 miles on my Honda Shadow Spirit.” “On one particular trip, I was following behind Curtis, as usual, as he led. He has a Harley Road Glide Ultra, with a radio, Sirius, CD player, etc. He was be-bopping to the music. My bike is no-frills. I usually sing to myself on long trips. On this trip, I couldn’t get a song out of my head, but I didn’t know all the lyrics; so, I started making up my own, all about us riding and our friends who ride. Every gas stop, I had another verse, and by the time we got to South Carolina, I had a song. This inspired me to put into rhyme our riding adventures, and eventually I wrote my own melodies to these lyrics. A year later, I hired guitarist Jason Green who I had heard playing in
Penn Station (I found out later that he is in the Blues Hall of Fame, and he’s a Master of Jazz). We completed an entire album, my debut album, “Biker Girl,” which we recorded in Deer Park at D.A.R.E. Studios. I was 59 years old. When Jason’s schedule became too busy, I hired local Long Island musicians, and Mike Epstein of D.A.R.E. eventually became a co-producer of my albums.”
Maureen Griffin-Damone was crowned Ms. New York Senior America 2018. Griffin-Damone also recorded an old-time Gospel album. She’s been a Leader of Song at church for about 20 years and has served in the Home Visit Ministry. “Singing in church is something I’ve done since I was a child ... it’s a way for me to thank the Lord for all the blessings he’s given me.” She is the Director of Clothing Distribution through the Homeless Ministry and a portion of the proceeds of her gospel album go to help the homeless on Long Island. She pursued her music career full-time from October 2016 until recently, when she went back to work. From the roadway to the runway “When I was 35, I felt older than I do now,” said Griffin-Damone. “I made poor decisions back then. You have to feel good about yourself for things to work out. I thought my life was over, but now I feel like my life has just begun.” In 2018, Griffin-Damone was urged to run in the Ms. New York Senior America pageant. She took the crown and also earned the coveted Ms. Congeniality sash, going on to place in the top 10 in the Ms. Senior America pageant, held annually in Atlantic City. “I never would have been queen if I didn’t get over the idea that it’s never too late to do something with your life.” “Maureen has been a phenomenal queen,” said Marleen Schuss, the New York State Director of Ms. Senior America. “She’s been an asset

to our organization. She’s a strong, empowered woman who represents our organization beautifully, and she shows up for every event to fulfill her duties. She’s a very special queen.”
Maureen Griffin-Damone rides the Tail of the Dragon, a road bordered by the Great Smoky Mountains and the Cherokee National Forest. It is considered “the destination” for thousands of motorcycle and sports car fans. Griffin-Damone has been dancing with the Seasoned Steppers, Ms. New York Senior America’s dance troupe. “My tap shoes were collecting dust for 29 years,” she said, “and the shoes still fit! The dancing came right back to me.” “I believe in following my heart — when you do what’s in your heart, even if you don’t know how it’s going to work out, you need to follow that. I was struggling when I did my music full time, but I don’t regret a second of it. Follow your dream … do what’s right for you.” Music maker Griffin has released four CDs, three of which are original songs, and one which is old-time Gospel music. She has numerous videos on YouTube, including one of her favorites "Biker Food," which shows pictures that were shot at parties over the course of two years. There is also a song entitled "As We Ride This Road Before Us (A Biker Wedding Song)," which was her wedding gift to her husband, featuring photos from their wedding and their 10,000-mile cross-country honeymoon. lthough there’s some ambiguity as to when the US Department of Labor’s (DOL’s) so-called “Fiduciary Rule” will take effect, most asset managers are taking the position that it will one day happen in some shape or form. As a result, many are taking steps to be ready when the time comes. Concerned? Please note that Mark Snyder is a Registered Fiduciary as well as a Registered Investment Advisor (RIA). We’ve taken the extraordinary step of producing a video to help you understand how this rule may impact you. The bottom line – our office has been meeting the Fiduciary standard of care, the industry’s highest standard, long before the Fiduciary Rule was tabled. While we have regularly maintained a “client first” culture, the DOL rule, which has yet to go into effect, has grown awareness of the important issues facing investors, issues we’ve ad-
dressed long before the DOL brought them into prominence. While it remains to be seen what the full impact of the fiduciary standard will be, we have steadily acted in our clients’ best interest and will continue to do so. Would you prefer to work with someone bound by trust and the highest legal standards of professional care and accountability or someone who is not? The Registered Fiduciary certification is awarded to financial professionals who have passed the Registered Fiduciary™program. They have demonstrated an ability to act as competent financial fiduciaries, have displayed a superior care standard by passing an annual background check, and have pertinent educational qualifications, licenses and skills.
