A Crisis Is Brewing for Family Caregivers Caused by the Shortage Of Certified Geriatric Doctors!
A
geriatric physician, is a medical doctor that is board certified and has received additional training and certification in the treatment of older adults. Primary care physicians may provide medical care for elderly patients who do not have serious health concerns. However, when an older adult experiences physical, mental or emotional illnesses or disabilities that lead to a dependence on assistance from others, a geriatric physician should be consulted. Unfortunately, there are not enough certified geriatricians for New York family caregivers to consult! The situation results from the fact that Americans are living longer and accumulating more diseases and disabilities, coupled with scarcity of certified and experienced geriatricians and the inability of the medical community to attract anywhere near the number of certified physicians the patient population requires. Currently there are about 7,500 certified geriatric physicians in the US, but 17,000 are needed to care for
some 12 million older Americans today alone! By 2030 approximately 30,000 will be needed. Thanks to the experience and the innovative talent of one of NY’s leading and most experienced geriatric physician, Dr. Nathanael Desire DO, CMD, founder and director of Geriatric Physician Consultants through the use of a state of the art combination of a virtual platform and telemedicine families can now receive the compassionate, knowledgeable and affordable support that they and their senor loved one requires. Families who have questions about the loved one medical treatment can call 800-285-2133 and schedule a FREE 20 minute – No obligation consult to discuss the program and the medical questions concerning their senior love one(s). 50+

Steps to a Healthier You in 2018
W
ant to make resolutions you’ll keep this new year? Follow these four steps for a healthier you, inside and out.
Stick to Your Workout After the holidays, the gym is filled, but come February, the novelty wears off, life gets in the way and, according to U.S. News & World Report, 80 percent of resolutions fail by the second week of the month. Instead of jumping from no routine to a sevendays-a-week commitment, introduce workouts to your schedule in small doses. Find something that you’ll look forward to, like a cycling class or outdoor pursuits.
short of their fruit and vegetable intake goals, and most eat only half the recommended amount of fiber. To increase your consumption of essential nutrients, create a grocery list packed with fruits, vegetables, protein and whole grains. Plan meals for the week to ensure you stick to a whole-food menu. Keep ingredients on hand for meals you can make in a pinch. Freeze individual servings of chopped fruits and vegetables in resealable bags to create quick and delicious smoothies each morning in a high-powered blender, such as the Vitamix E310 Explorian Series machine.
Eat Smarter According to the CDC, most Americans are falling Stress Less Stress can have adverse effects on minds and bodies, as insomnia, weight gain, anxiety and depression are all potential related risks. Simple changes can help you manage tension. Sometimes, stress can be solved with some “me time.” Treat yourself to a massage or manicure, soak in a hot bath, or unwind with a nature walk. Connecting with others can help, too. Plan a brunch with your best friend or a date night with your significant other. Feeling overwhelmed with work and family life? Build out a to-do list or calendar to feel more in control of your busy schedule, then cross items off the list when completed. Practice Positivity A sunny outlook can affect your wellbeing. Keep a gratitude journal by writing down something good that happens each day. On bad days, you’ll be forced to focus on the positive aspects of your life. One of the best ways to improve your happiness is by giving others a boost. Volunteer with a charitable organization or donate to a favorite cause. Practice doing something kind daily. This new year, take small steps to help you feel happier and healthier. — StatePoint 50+

Preventing Back Pain
ack pain should not be ignored, even if you think it is due to aging. It could be a sign of a serious, but treatable disease. Recurring back pain can have severe physical impacts on your body and can lead to debilitating injuries and chronic conditions. However, back pain does not need to be a normal part of aging if you make simple changes to your lifestyle. Always check with your doctor before beginning an exercise program or seeing a Chiropractor, especially if you have a history of lower back pain, as you do not want to do anything to worsen your current condition. •Exercise- Low-impact exercises like walking, swimming or stretching can increase energy and strength and increase blood flow to back muscles and the spine to support healing. Your doctor can tell you which exercises are right for you. • Maintaining a healthy weight- Too much weight, especially in your mid-section can add pressure to your lower back leading to pain. Managing weight
through eating healthy and exercising can reduce back pain and prevent other back problems. •Practicing good posture – Stress from poor posture can lead to back pain by causing problems with your muscles, discs, and joints. Support the curve of your spine and avoid slouching or hunching over. •Chiropractic care –Chiropractic adjustments, also known as chiropractic or spinal manipulation, is a common therapeutic treatment for lower back pain. Regular chiropractic visits can increase range of motion, reducing nerve irritability and improve function. 4 Rules for a More Organized Home in the New Year
W
hether you’re after smarter storage or looking to cut clutter, successful resolutions begin with a thoughtful approach. Think Small Smaller sustainable actions are key to lasting change. Take it one room or even one drawer at a time to keep momentum positive and to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Say “No” to Clutter Paring down possessions doesn’t have to be painful. Often, less can literally be more: Consignment shops and eBay make it easy to turn four or five pieces of furniture you “kind of like” into one piece you absolutely love.
Store Décor Wisely Stepping up storage containers can make a big difference. For a wide selection of storage solutions specifically designed for holiday décor, check out Improvements, which offers everything from ornament organizers to wreath and garland storage bags. Keep a Place for Everything Make storage more convenient and efficient by streamlining. Items frequently used together should be kept together. Make a Plan Designate specific rooms and spaces for certain seasons. For example, the first warm days of spring for cleaning out the shed or
garage. More organizational inspiration can be found by visiting improvementscatalog.com 50+ — StatePoint

Money & the Law Hope for the Best, Be Prepared for the Worst … And Enjoy the Ride
A
Michael Hartzman CFP, Bristol Financial Services
s 2017 winds down the stock market remains super charged and is not showing any signs of taking a breather. Keep in mind, prior to this year, the market already enjoyed eight years of sustained growth. Remarkably the Dow Jones has set close to 50 record highs this year. Last year at this time the stock market was absorbing the reality of a Trump victory along with Congress tilting Republican. The market was already going up and the media was on board calling the rally the “Trump Bump.” It is a rare occurrence when the reality exceeds the hype, but the 2017 stock market has exceeded any expert’s predictions. The question is why? To Trump’s detractors the thought was that the apparent chaos and disorganization of his administration would derail his ability to implement his agenda. His supporters say we put a businessman in the White House and his pro-business mindset and willingness to relax regulations on various industries will help companies enjoy long-term and sustained growth. One of President Trump’s campaign messages was that the economy should grow at a rate of three percent or more. Up until now the market was buying what he was selling with very little to show for it, although the market got an early Christmas present with a tax reform overhaul primarily designed to lower corporate tax rates and ultimately have more money flowing through the economy. There is a lot of faith and hope based upon all this working because if it doesn’t, experts believe we could be adding $1 trillion to the already inflated deficit. As we head into 2018 economists are optimistic that the market is lined up to have another robust year. When it comes to investing it is always prudent to consider the flip side. President Trump still has many detractors, the Russia investigation will continue to plague his term until conclusion, and the tensions with North Korea make the market nervous. If the reality does not meet the expectations investors will be hit with a hard dose of reality and negative returns. So, as we enter 2018 let’s hope for the best, be prepared for the worst and enjoy the ride. Contact Bristol Financial Services at 516-349-5555. www.Bristol-Financial.com. 50+

13 NY U.S. House Members Backing Strategy to Support Family Caregivers
O
ver a dozen of New York’s U.S. House members have thrown their backing behind creation of a strategy to support the nearly 2.6 million New Yorkers – and more than 40 million Americans – whose unpaid labor of love is becoming increasingly needed as society ages: family caregivers. Thirteen of the state’s 27 members in the House of Representatives are co-sponsoring the bipartisan Recognize, Assist, Include, Support, and Engage (RAISE) Family Caregivers Act, including original cosponsor Elise Stefanik (NY-21). The RAISE Family Caregivers Act
(S. 1028/H.R. 3759) calls for development of a strategy to support family caregivers and in part make it easier to coordinate care for loved ones, including helping family caregivers find info, referrals and resources, as well as improving respite options so family caregivers can recharge. New York House co-sponsors in addition to Rep. Stefanik of New York’s North Country include, from Long Island Lee Zeldin (1st District) and Peter King (2nd); and from New York City Grace Meng (6th), Hakeem Jeffries (8th), Yvette Clarke (9th), Dan Donovan (11th), Carolyn Maloney (12th) and Eliot Engel (16th). Others come from
Hudson Valley, the Capital Region, Central New York and Western New York. The bill has already passed the U.S. Senate with the support of New York’s two U.S. Senators, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand. 50+

Boomers Still Struggle to Define Retirement
M
iddle-income boomers are grappling with a “new retirement” stemming from changes to their retirement programs, as employers shifted away from defined benefit plans such as pensions to defined contribution plans like 401(k) plans. What does this “new” retirement look like? Boomers surveyed by Bankers Life say they have lowered their overall expectations for financial independence in retirement, compared to before the crisis. The study reports that only 34 percent expect to retire debt free; 19 percent expect to pay off their mortgage; 16 percent expect to pass an inheritance to heirs. So what can you do to help restore your confidence that a personally satisfying retirement is possible? Here are three good ideas: 1. Look to increase your financial independence by: Paying off debt: Debt payments should ideally be no more than 10 percent of your income when you retire. Working part-time; employment income will re-
lieve pressure on your other sources of income. 2. Plan for the unexpected. Only 28 percent of middle-income boomers have built up an emergency fund since the start of the financial crisis. Plan for any unexpected costs. 3. Whether you want to resume investing or simply create a savings plan, consider working with a financial professional. 3 Tips to Make Finances Add Up for the Spouse Left Behind
F
inancial professionals say ignoring the eventuality of death is unwise when it comes to a couple’s decisions about retirement and money. “The decisions you make today can affect your spouse’s financial situation after you pass away,” says Peter Bombara, CEO and founder of PCB Financial Advisory Group impact on your surviving spouse.” • Consider pension options carefully. Not everyone has a pension any more, but those who do may have a few options available to them. A pension pays a set monthly amount for the rest of the person’s life. But often there is a survivor benefit that allows the person’s surviving spouse to continue to receive a check after the pensioner dies. Choosing the survivor’s bene-
By Peter Bombara fit, though, means the pensioner receives a reduced amount while alive. “Some people choose the highest dollar amount so they have the most money coming in each month,” Bombara says. “But if they choose the largest amount, their spouse gets nothing when they die.” • Weigh Social Security decisions. A surviving spouse can be eligible for their deceased partner’s full Social Security benefit, but when they claim that benefit is a major factor in how large those monthly checks are. For example, a surviving spouse can qualify for reduced benefits as early as age 60, but they can get full benefits if they are at their full retirement age. • Seek professional advice if you’re confused. A financial pro-
fessional can help you better understand the options available for both your pension and your Social Security. A professional also can provide advice on how to manage your assets so that the surviving spouse is in better shape to handle a potential drop in income. “Most people want their spouse to do well financially after they pass away,” Bombara says. “So, as unpleasant as the conversation might seem, they really do need to talk about the money situation and make sure they have a good plan in place.” 50+ Peter Bombara, CEO and founder of PCB Financial Advisory Group (www.pcbfinancial.com), and has appeared on shows on FOX, NBC, CBS and ABC.

Why a Catholic Cemetery?
O
ur Catholic faith teaches us that our bodies are a sacred part of God’s creation, and therefore the human body is worthy of great reverence. The Church has always taught that the living human body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. In keeping with this belief, the Church has directed that sacred and blessed places be provided for the burial of the faithful departed, including the cremated body. Our choice of a final resting place should reflect our life and devotions, our journey toward eternal salvation. The statuary, shrines and symbolism throughout our beautiful grounds serve as constant reminders of the sacredness of this holy place, providing faith, hope and comfort. The preference of the Church is that every Catholic be buried in a Catholic Cemetery characterized by these evident signs of faith. A Catholic Cemetery reflects the doctrine and liturgy of the Church and is forever a consolation to the bereaved and an inspiration to the living. 50+
