President’s Letter Although it does not feel like it, spring is here and TCC has many great events planned, despite the weather.

Beginning April 14th, for six weeks, we are introducing Thirsty Thursday Happy Hour from 4:30-7PM, with guest bartenders. Please come out to see who may be helping on Thursday Nights… you may be surprised!

The Club also has our traditional Easter Brunch on April 24th (please sign up early as space is limited) and on the 30th we will be hosting a Beer and Single Malt Scotch Dinner.

All of TCC’s golf leagues start their 2011 season in April, with the 9-Hole TWGA on the 6th and the 18-Hole TWGA on the 7th, leading the way with their opening breakfast meeting and seminar. The TMG opening day will be April 12th, with the first night of the WNL on the 20th and our Junior Golf Clinics beginning April 15th.

TCC’s golf season will be in full swing by the end of this month. I want to thank Marc and his staff for a great job in planning the upcoming events for 2011.

Guy and his staff have been preparing the course for all of this upcoming play. Green aerification began the week of March 21st. We are hopeful the warm weather will soon be here to help our greens heal after this much needed process. The drainage work was completed on the greens for holes #9 and #14, and also in the fairway on hole #15, and it seems to be working as planned. Because we will be killing the existing Bermuda grass on the fairway of hole #15, starting around April 15th or so, you may notice a delay in the greening of this fairway this year. We will then be sprigging the fairway with a new type of Bermuda grass called Patriot Bermuda. This Bermuda is designed to green up a little earlier in the spring and hold its color later into the fall season. We had two areas of this Bermuda in the 15th fairway last year and it is a much improved playing surface than what we currently have. We are hopeful this fairway will be back to its normal playing condition by mid June, but unfortunately, it is weather dependent. There will be notices in the Pro Shop about this process.

April 5th is the first day we will be accepting TCC Summer Camp applications starting at 9AM. Please sign up early as possible as space is limited.

We have started to see a few new memberships come in and I would like to say “Welcome” to our new members. If you think a friend of yours may want to join TCC, please bring them out to one of our Prospective Member events this spring or invite them out to meet Chris Wyles to go over the great new member programs we have in place, such as the 2-1-1 Challenge. Please call for more details.

Our financial position still remains strong through the first 4 months of our fiscal year, but we can only maintain this positive outlook if you continue to support your Club. Please come join us for lunch, dinner or a drink, and for those of you that missed the Oyster Roast in March, you must put this on your calendar for next year. The Club served over 2,800 oysters that night and a great time was had by all!

Finally, one last thought, the next time you are at TCC, please thank our staff as they do a wonderful job for us.

New Procedure—Membership Changes In the future, any change to a Club membership, including class changes or resignations, must be submitted in writing and contain the signatures of both the husband and the wife, in the case of a married membership category. In the past we have accepted membership requests signed by one spouse, rather than requiring the signature of both spouses. Effective April 1, 2011, requests must be signed by both the husband and wife. Thank you.

From the General Manager With glimpses of warmer weather and many members trickling back to the eastern shore from southern winter travels, a feeling of another active season at Talbot Country Club is upon us. Those of you who remained in Maryland for the past few months have been able to enjoy many activities at the Club. The Oyster Roast Bingo Night brought 145 members to the club. Congratulations to Clay Railey, the grand prize winner. A record number of oysters were served raw, fried, Rockefeller, devilled, in sauces, in stuffing and even in shot glasses. Thank you for your support and participation. March also played host to an informative Golf Rules Seminar, a Pub Night and a Wine Dinner. Please take a moment to read through the upcoming activities and make your reservations.

The beginning of April will bring a few new additions and opportunities for technological advancement at TCC. We are unveiling a new look to our website. The website will offer you enhanced ability to navigate through club activities, events, golf information and many other pieces of club material. Additionally, online tee times will now be made available. Tee times can be made through the TCC website. Marc Kimminau and the golf professional staff will be holding seminars with our regular golf groups to assist you as this process begins. If you are not a computer guru, don’t worry, tee times can still be made in person or by telephone as they have in the past.

The official opening day of golf is around the corner. Guy Ostrander, Matt Rich, Sonny Maddox and Mark Tucker, along with the entire Greens and Grounds crew, are working hard to get the course ready for all to enjoy. I am pleased to report that our winter drainage projects are complete. The 9th and 14th greens were addressed and the results have been tremendous thus far. The 15th fairway also has a new drainage system. Results have also been noticeable to this point. The 15th fairway will be regrassed beginning sometime in May. As this process gets closer, the staff will keep you updated on its progress.

From the General Manager (continued) As I mentioned last month, a new “Happy Hour” event will begin on Thursday, April 14th. We will kick off “Thirsty Thursdays” with complimentary hors d’Oeuvres and drink specials. Denim will be permitted on these Thursday evenings in the Grille Room and on the Deck. “Thirsty Thursday” will run over a seven week period with a different guest bartender each Thursday. These guest bartenders are in a competition for the most beverage sales from the Happy Hour time period of 4:30 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Come out and support our guest bartenders.

Easter Sunday is right around the corner on Sunday, April 24th. We are filling up very quickly. Brunch begins at 11:00 A.M. and will be served until 1:30 P.M. If you have not had a chance to make your reservation, please do so as soon as possible. The Easter Bunny has made time to come to Talbot Country Club around 12:00 Noon.

The Easter Egg Hunt will also be held at 12:00 Noon. There will be two age groups with separate areas to hunt for the eggs. Our tremendous spread includes an omelet stations, prime rib, oysters on the half shell, smoked salmon, shrimp cocktail and eggs Chesapeake, to name a few. Adults - $29.00++ (includes a complimentary bloody mary or mimosa), Children ages 4 to 12 - $13.00++, Under 4 is free.

On Saturday, April 30th, the Club will host a Beer and Single Malt Scotch Dinner. Wonderful handcrafted brews will be served along with single malt scotch, as a night of delicious food and beverage will commence.

The cost of the event is $10.00++ per person. *Please note that in the past, we have also done our “New Members Party” on Derby Day. This will be different in 2011. We will be hosting a separate “New Members Party” on Friday June 3rd.

Sunday Night Dinner Service is scheduled to begin on May 15th and run through the month of September. We will be offering the full a la carte dinner menu. Please join us for a casual evening of dinner after your round of golf, day on the boat or just come in for a relaxing Sunday evening. Please check the club calendar for Sunday evening dinner dates. *When special events are scheduled on Sundays, we will not be holding Sunday Night Dinner Service.

Be a part of the Talbot Country Club Swim Team in 2011! After many years of the TCC Swim Team on hiatus, we are bringing it back. In 2011, we plan to start with a modified version with two practices per week over an 8 week span along with other team building activities. There will be three age groups with specific morning practices times for each. If your vacation schedule keeps your child from missing a practice or two, that is perfectly fine. We encourage full participation but understand your busy schedule for the summer months. There will be no practice on Monday, July 4th. Please note that if your child is already participating in a TCC Week Long Summer Camp, (he/she will attend the swim team practice and then go back to the summer camp. Participation levels in the TCC Swim Team for 2011 will help us gauge the interest level as we determine the viability of continuing this program into the future. Please find a registration form below. Registration forms will be accepted from now until June 1st. Please return the forms to Chris Wyles in the Clubhouse.

Aquatics Manager, Amanda Cooper, will be the Swim Team coach. Amanda has extensive experience in swim team programs and skill development. The following are a few words regarding the swim team from Amanda.

A combination of endurance and interval workouts, “drill” and stroke technique and team bonding activities will allow your children to soar to the sky and truly become shining stars this summer. We will implement drills and fresh, cutting edge techniques used in the competitive aquatic world of today. Drills allow swimmers of all ages to better their strokes by allowing them to focus on each particular part of the stroke. Each stroke, freestyle (front crawl), backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly is made up by using different parts of the body to help propel the body through the water. Key elements such as body and hip rotation, body alignment, head position, breathing and kicking are examples of these areas that will help swimmers get the best out of each stroke. With the children’s hearts in place, these techniques and drills will be a recipe for success.

Talbot Country Club 2011 TCC Summer Camp

It’s time again to get excited about TCC’s Summer Camp. In addition to the wonderful themes for each week, an element of golf and tennis will be incorporated into each camp week. For 2011, Golf Professional Marc Kimminau has implemented a golf clinic into each week of camp. The golf clinic will be three hours for every camp attendee on one specific day of camp each week. Marc and the golf staff will be able to focus better on the areas of teaching, etiquette and skills. Tennis Professional, Aaron Hutt will be incorporating a tennis clinic that will also be offered one day each week. Prior to each week of camp, parents will be notified of the schedule for the week and the days golf and tennis will be offered. Children are encouraged to bring their own equipment for golf and tennis. Each child attending camp will receive a TCC t-shirt.

To sign your children or grandchildren up, please complete and return the form below to the Club’s Front Desk.

Each week is limited to 30 children. Applications for camp will NOT be accepted until 9 a.m., April 5, 2011.

For the first two weeks of registration, you may only enroll in two weeks of camp per child. Beginning April 19th, children may enroll in the other camps, provided there are vacancies. If you would like to enroll in more than two weeks of camp, please number your camp preferences – 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc. All camp applications will be timed and dated as they are received at the Club. Camp openings will be assigned as applications are received – NO EARLIER THAN 9 a.m. APRIL 5th. The preferences noted will dictate the waiting list for camps as they open up after the first two week period. You will receive a letter from the Business Office confirming your child’s placement in the camps or on a waiting list. Prior to camp, you will receive more information about that week’s camp program. Each week of camp runs Monday through Thursday with daily sign-in between 8:30 and 9 a.m.

Camp begins at 9 a.m. All campers should be picked up no later than 2p.m.. Lunch and snacks are provided.

Camp fees will be charged upon registration. Cancellation requests must be made prior to May 27th. No refunds will be issued as of May 28th.

Greens and Grounds Those of us who have been on the golf course can easily see all the work that has been done over the winter and in the past few weeks. The painted duck heads, ball washers and benches are in place and the azalea garden behind the seventh green has already been mulched. Low hanging branches on fairway trees have been trimmed. All of the green side bunkers on the front nine have been filled with new sand after making sure the drainage was working properly. The remaining green side bunkers will be refurbished in 2011.

Aeration of the greens is scheduled before the beginning of the official golf season, unless the weather complicates the schedule. Once again, small tines will be used for aeration, which seems to hasten the return of ideal putting surfaces.

Drinking water for golfers will be available on the course in individual bottles this year. The bottles will be stored in ice chests at several locations on the course. This will actually be more economical and sanitary than the large coolers that formerly dispensed water to golfers.

After the positive effects of the drainage system installed on the seventh green last year, the ninth and fourteen greens have had similar systems installed in the past month. It is expected that this will significantly improve the greens’ tolerance of heat and moisture throughout the entire golfing season.

Major work is being done on the fifteenth fairway. In addition to the installation of an extensive drainage system, the existing fairway grass will be killed to prepare the fairway for sprigging with hardy Patriot Bermuda grass in May. During the sprigging process and the time it takes for the Bermuda to take root, golfers will be expected to play from the fairway rough on number fifteen.

So we’ll be playing our second shot from the rough on 15? So what’s new?

Golf Committee Finally, spring has arrived and the golfers are out on the course. Marc’s winter golf program and USGA rules seminar last week were well attended and extremely informative. Those of you who don’t belong to the USGA are missing out on an opportunity to support our sport, as well as valuable information about the game of golf. Go to USGA.org and check it out. For those with smart phones, you can download a USGA Rules “app.”

Speaking of rules, you should have received your 2011 TCC Roster Book, with bylaws, rules and regulations this week. Please review the golf course and pro shop operating hours, so we do not interfere with the grounds crew, especially on Mondays. Also all golfers are required to check in with the pro shop before starting play.

This year the Men’s Member-Guest will be June 9th, 10th and 11th in hopes of avoiding the hot weather we have experienced in July over the past 3 years. Marc has sent out the registration notice, so call a friend or relative and join the fun. The stag steak night, skills contest and seafood extravaganza are great events in addition to 3 days of golf. Call Marc if you have any questions.

Notes From the Short Grass - Marc D. Kimminau, PGA Head Professional Spring has arrived and the Masters will be contested April 4th – 10th. The celebration of golf at Augusta National, near Atlanta, occurs each spring and really gets people excited about returning to the course and hitting the links.

Flowers and trees are blooming here at TCC and it will not be long before the course will be bustling with golfers.

Your Professional staff has been working hard to prepare for the coming year and to implement some new and very exciting changes at TCC for this year. To enhance your golf experience we are going to have several cooler boxes on the course where you will be able to help yourself to bottled water. We are going to remove the ice water cooler stations on the course, but we will continue to offer the ice water machine at the golf shop and the comfort station at hole number 7. In addition, our trademark ice tea and lemonade station at number 8 will remain. This will prove to be more sanitary and more convenient for you and your guests. Recycling receptacles will be provided for these water bottles so that our green initiative continue here at TCC. In addition, our website has received a face lift, but you will continue to go to the same address www.talbotcc.com. I think you will find it to be more pleasant to visit and more interactive. Also, we have begun to integrate online tee times to our website. Once you have logged into our website, you will be able to click on the FORETEES icon and you may go to the FORETEES home page, where you will be able to sign up for league play, book a tee time and sign up for member tournaments.

New products are arriving daily! We have all the new equipment from Taylor Made, Titleist, Ping, Cobra and Callaway. In addition, we have brand new custom fitting carts from Titleist and Ping. Nick, Kevin and I are extremely excited about the coming season and all of the new products available. Please let us know if you are thinking of any new equipment. We would be happy to custom fit you for any club in your bag.

NEW PAVERS NEAR PRACTICE GREEN Something new from the golf department… we have new pavers near the putting green outside of the pro shop.

We have installed these to help the wear and tear of the turf near the putting green. We ask that you please do not take your golf cart on these pavers. They have enhanced the area near the pro shop and they look really nice. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

Inside the Leather… News From the Niners April 6th, 9:30am is our Kick-Off. We will start with a light breakfast, followed by our Annual Spring Meeting. Golf Goes Green Member—Member Tournament May 18th - 9:30am Shotgun Start Now is the time to invite any gal who is a member of TCC, but NOT a 2011 dues paying member of 9-Hole TWGA. She can be an 18-er, social member, someone who is a golf member but does not play in an organized league or a former Niner. The format is 1 Better Ball of 2 Gross (no handicaps required) and the fun part will be to see how winners will be determined! Remember that this is a no frills, Going-Green event.

The cost is $58, all inclusive. Registration forms will be available on April 6th. The deadline is May 11th. This promises to be a great addition to our calendar.

We have planned a 9-Hole event followed by lunch, raffles and prizes.

The field is open to all Talbot Country Club ladies. The entry fee is $20 by check, made payable to: Rally for the Cure. Registration will begin on Wednesday, April 13th. A sign-up sheet will be pasted in the Ladies Locker Room. You may make your own foursome or have the Pro Shop pair you. Help make this event a successful one!

Hole Sponsorships Available – Sponsor a hole for this great cause for $100 (greater amounts appreciated and accepted). For every contribution of $100 or more, your name, business name or corporate sponsorship will be recognized by a placard placard on a hole in recognition of your donation. 18-Hole TWGA News If you enjoy playing golf and have a handicap of 36 or lower, why not join the 18-Hole Talbot Women's Golf League, which meets Thursday mornings. To add your name to the 18- Hole roster, please contact Dianne Miller, Chairperson, or J.P. Lewis, Membership Chair.

The first event on the calendar for the 18-Hole Ladies League will be a Breakfast Meeting and Seminar on April 7th, beginning at 9 AM. If the weather permits, golf could follow the meeting. Please call Marion and make reservations for the breakfast. The official opening day for regular play for the 18-Hole Ladies will be Thursday, April 14th. Please sign up with the pro shop if you intend to play. It will be a 9 AM Shotgun start. Plan to be in your golf cart by 8:45 AM. Now that spring is about to spring on the Eastern Shore, let's start thinking about our first major tournament, the Spring Tournament, which begins May 5th. Watch for the posters and make sure you sign up for our first tournament for the 2011 Season. Wishing everyone birdies and pars, and even more, a summer of aces.

2011 JUNIOR CORNER Spring has officially arrived at Talbot Country Club. The grass is turning green and the flowers are beginning to bloom. This year is shaping up to be a fun filled experience for the Junior Golfers. April marks the start of the golf season here at Talbot Country Club for the Junior Program.

JUNIOR GOLF CLINIC - Beginning April 15th and ending May 27th, we will be conducting Friday Junior Golf Clinics. The clinic will run from 5:15 - 6:00 pm and the cost is $10 per Junior per session. Juniors are encouraged to make their own tee times after the clinic. Please call the golf shop to sign up.

SAVE THE DATE - On May 13th, from 5:15 - 6:00 pm we will be having our annual Junior Demo Day. This will be a great time for the kids to come and try and get fit for their junior sets.

JUNIOR GOLF LADDER New to Talbot Country Club this summer, we will be implementing a Junior Golf Ladder to the Junior Program.

This Golf Ladder will help promote junior golfers to play more often and with other juniors at the club. The juniors will be able to challenge the golfers in front of them in the rankings. A board with the golfer’s names and ranking position will be in the Pro Shop, allowing them to see who is in front of them and who they can challenge and play against.

With spring approaching quickly, now is the time to start scheduling your private lessons. Call either Nick or Kevin to schedule your lesson.
