Sequoyah CC April Newsletter 2017

APRIL 2017

THE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE — Steve Callaway, President As April begins, we hope we are out of the rainy season. April through June is the best time of year for our club. The wet weather stops, the plants and trees bloom, and the course firms up with smooth and fast greens. Come out and enjoy your course. Enjoy your club as we begin some busy months. Easter, Mother’s Day, The Invitational Party and Memorial Day are all big celebrations at Sequoyah. Please make reservations so we can accommodate and properly serve you and your guests at these large events. Operationally, the Board is working with management on the Club’s budget. The wet months caused a significant

downturn in activity and revenue at Sequoyah CC. Reduced golf rounds means reduced food and beverage revenue. We anticipate the next months will reverse this trend as the weather improves. The facilities improvement project is moving forward. We are working with the architect and interior designer while finishing drawings for the City of Oakland building permits. There may be some delays due to contractor availability. The fitness equipment selection and pricing is near completion. That will be followed by the new furniture selection and pricing. The pool is heated as we get ready for summer. Adults are welcome to “swim at your own risk” as there will not be daily life guard service until swim season. We will have weekend life guard

PRO SHOP NEWS — By Brandon Huneke, PGA Professional Spring course maintenance is underway with the greens aerated and sanded on March 29th. The fairways will be aerated between April 10th and 18th (weather permitting). This procedure, although a nuisance to players, is extremely beneficial to the condition of the golf course. Aeration consists of punching holes in the greens/fairways/ tees and filling them with sand/seed to alleviate compaction and promote oxygen flow through the soil. If the weather is cooperative, full recovery of the greens takes approximately three to four weeks. You may have noticed some tree removal adjacent to the 18th tee. This is

due to root encroachment under the surface of the 18th tee which causes an uneven playing surface and inconsistent turf health. Once the roots are removed, the teeing ground will be levelled and sodded. Weather permitting, the reconstructed tee should be playable for the Men’s Invitational on May 18th.

Tournament Central The NCGA Zone Qualifier was held on March 18th & 19th. This two-day event produces only one winning group to advance to the Regional Qualifier in Monterey. Congratulations to our winners Nick Lima, John Farquhar, Gary Continued on Page TWO

service beginning in April. We ask that you only bring children to swim when there are life guards on duty. The Men’s Invitational is almost full. So, if you have not signed up, now is your time. We have about ten spots left. This is each member’s opportunity to show off his club to his selected guest. The tournament and related events cover three days: May 18th – 20th. For newer members, this is a great opportunity to enjoy Sequoyah CC and meet fellow members. The dinner party on Saturday May 20th will feature Tony Lindsay. Lindsay won eleven Grammies and toured with Carlos Santana. This is an event you don’t want to miss.

PRO SHOP NEWS — Continued from Page ONE Russello and Bill Buchanan, who will represent Sequoyah CC at Poppy Hills and Quail Lodge on April 10th & 11th! The next Saturday Tournament will be the NCGA Four Ball Qualifier on Saturday, April 15th. This is a two-person better ball event where up to three teams will advance to the Regional Qualifier on May 18th. Grab a partner and sign up in the golf shop! We have recently introduced changes in the way we communicate to the members. Less emails are being sent and the way we used to send notification of tournaments is no more. To be informed on upcoming events at the Club and on the golf course, please check the “This week at Sequoyah” email. We will be integrating online tournament registration in May.

Golf Instruction We will be holding a new/ beginner golf clinic on the last Thursday of each month. These clinics are a great way to learn the basics and become familiar and comfortable with the game and procedures. Be on the lookout for more information in the weekly emails. Our Junior Program is starting on April 4th. This golf school for our youngsters will be held every Tuesday afternoon and possibly on Thursdays if the demand is there. An email with all pertinent information has been sent to

Course Maintenance Did you know an un-repaired ball mark on the putting surface does not heal for 25 days and an improperly repaired ball mark takes 38 days to heal? Not repairing a ball mark will cause the inlaying grass to die and leave a depression which will knock putts offline. Repairing your ball mark will smooth the surface and initiate the healing process immediately. Please be aware that repairing a ball mark incorrectly can actually cause more damage than not attempting to repair it at all. Make sure you know how to fix your ball marks and they will heal within 10 days keeping Sequoyah in the best playable and aesthetic shape possible. See chart above for instructions on how to properly fix a ball mark.

Great Shots There were not many great shots to write about in the month of March. Everyone must still be shaking off the rust! One golfer shined by chipping in from 40 yards on #17 for birdie. He then proceeded to knock his second shot on #18 into the greenside bunker, then knock it into the hole for an eagle! Way to finish the round, Chris Conway!!

WOMEN’S GOLF — Emily Gorin, Captain March came in like a lion, and no sign of the end-of-the month lamb! Even so, we did manage to get in a few rounds of golf together as follows:

NINER NEWS — Molly Natsues, Secretary The month of March for the Nine Hole group of ladies saw more golf than previous months, but still this everlasting rain! On March 8th, Mary Jane Gross planned a putting clinic with golf afterwards with the goal of greeting potential new members interested in our growing group of dynamic women. A warm welcome to our most recent additions: Ava Kelly, Alex Phillips and Ann McIntosh. We all look forward to getting to know you better and enjoying golf when the weather clears up!

General Meeting News President Buffy Ross announced that we will have five spring clinics covering full swing, putting, short game, sand and uneven lies with a morning and after lunch session. The fee is $10 and look for sign-ups on the Niner board in the Pro Shop and here in the newsletter for the Bunker Clinic on April 4th. The First Tee will be conducting their tournament here at Sequoyah on April 24th with the entrance fee set at $185 per person including breakfast, champagne, lunch and nine holes. It is always a fun tournament and wonderful way to raise funds for such a worthy cause. The Forward Tees have just been officially rated. (Yeah!) The rating is 68.9 with a slope of 125 and yardage of 4,853. Names and colors of the tees will need to be chosen. Following that, Brandon will create a scorecard for the tees. This is very welcomed by the Niners and will make golf a more do-able and fun game for many of us. We thank all who helped make this a reality — especially Mary Schmitz. Please remember to post ALL of your scores, and be sure to play with someone to make the card qualify in developing your handicap or posting. If you play only seven holes, you can still post, use par plus pops for last two holes. Contact Neva Phillips to sign up for our Eclectic Tournament which is always fun. There is still plenty of time as it runs from March 1st – May 3rd, using the forward tees. With a heavy heart, we said farewell to our club Director of Instruction, Tracy Stansberry. We wish him only the very best in Preoria, AZ and hope to visit him soon! April Birthdays: Terry Cheng, Buffy Ross and Tamrin Rice
