ummer 2016 is here and The Club is in full swing, with on-the-water events including racing, sailing, power boating and standup paddleboarding. Off the water, The Club held a member meeting on June 21 and, while many members were away on vacation, the meeting was well-attended by 80-90 members. Topics covered included the Regatta Center Project, a House Committee report on club communications and a report from the Governance Advisory Group (GAG). Architect David Ross presented the review of the Regatta Center Project, which is slowly making its way through the Belvedere Planning Commission. Final details have been sent to the city, so we can move forward. I hope to have more information to share by the end of summer. House Committee member, Diana Jason, completed a detailed review or our website, Bow Wave and Bulletin, with a major focus on improving the functionality of the website and Bow Wave. This report and recommendations will be presented to the Board for implementation, and I think the results will be a much-improved member experience. We hope to have the changes made by the later part of the year. Hats off to Diana for a terrific job! Vice Commodore Jerry Eaton has put together a strong group of past Commodores and Club leaders to review our current governance structure and compare it to other private clubs. This review will ensure we’re using best practices and meeting the needs of The Club in the short and long term. Recommendations from this group will be forwarded to the Board for consideration. More to follow on this subject. I have to say, it was refreshing to hear members express their support for The SFYC and direction we’re heading at the meeting. We have a great club and our members are the best. It’s a pleasure to be your Commodore! Our club cruise to the Pacific Northwest, September 1018, is shaping up. With 76 members already signed up, we’re sure to have lots of fun. Boats are still available, so there’s time to round up some friends and come along if you haven’t already registered! We’d love to have you join us, so contact me if you’re interested in going. In closing, I'd like to thank all of the members who volunteer their time and talents to make what our club what it is today. The spirit of cooperation among the committees and the Board of Directors improves the efficiency of managing The Club and makes it enjoyable to be a part of it. Thank you, all!

Summer Time, Summer Time, Sum-Sum-Summer Time – Summer Tiiime!
stephcannell@yahoo.com
hen we’re not out enjoying all that summer has to offer, The Auxiliary is working diligently to plan memorable fall events and raise money for Youth Sailing. Next up, our Annual Auxiliary Fundraiser on September 29. You won’t want to miss out on this year’s prizes which include an Electric Bike, an SUP and paddle and a $2,500 shopping spree at Helen Lyall Boutique. Thank you to our Co-Chairs Emily Heller, Annie Mendenhall, Stephanie Portillo, Andrina Welter and Julie Zanze for their creativity and motivation to make this fundraiser a huge success. If you haven’t bought a ticket yet, we’re selling them in the bar throughout the summer on most Friday nights. Come say hello and meet an SFYC junior sailor or two who’ve volunteered to help sell tickets with us. Tickets can also be purchased at the front desk. The second annual Auxiliary Cup is on October 1. This race is The Club’s first regatta skippered and crewed solely by women. As we met to discuss the sailing instructions and deed of trust, we looked through last year’s photos album and reminisced on what a success it was. This is a truly special event. Whether you are crew, a skipper or a mentor on a boat, our hope is we can get as many women out on the water as possible. Sign up at www.sfyc.org today. If you have any questions, you can reach out to Paige Brooks, P/P Carol Jesmore, Angie Lackey, Kim Lynch, P/P Elizabeth Merrill, P/P Marily Rimmer, Shannon Ruhland, Alice Shinn or P/P Ann Welch. Each has been working tirelessly to make this year’s Auxiliary Cup one you must attend. Volunteer help is always needed so, if you want to support the regatta, please contact Kim Lynch.

SFYC Wins Rose Cup
Forrest Gay, Director of Sailing race@sfyc.org
he SFYC team won the U.S. Youth Match Racing Championship for the second time since its inception in 2010! This year, in Sheboygan, WI, the team of Romain Screve, Sammy Shea and Jackson Ritter bested the field of 10 teams from around the country, winning the final series 3-2. The huge trophy resided at The SFYC in 2013 as well, when Scott Buckstaff and team won the event. The Rose Cup is a qualifier for the Governors Cup at Balboa Yacht Club in July (after the Bulletin goes to print). It’s the oldest international youth match racing regatta in the world, and 2016 marks the 50th anniversary. Antoine Screve, a Gov Cup alumnus, returned to join the team for this event.

Upcoming Major Regattas at The SFYC he late-summer prime sailing season is right around the corner, and The SFYC has two major regattas coming to town. First is the International One Design Class Championship, September 4-10. This regatta will see 16 teams from all over the world race west of Alcatraz. There will be eight beautiful IODs on the guest dock for the event and the 16 teams will rotate in and out of the boats on the water. With many teams and judges coming in from out of town, we’re in need of local housing for participants. If you have a spare bedroom and would be willing to have a sailing guest or two, please email Rich Pearce at rspent@aol.com. The second regatta will be October 4-8 for the Etchells North Americans. The SFYC will host the Etchells World Championship in the fall of 2017, so this regatta will be the warm-up for many of the top U.S. teams. We’re expecting about 25 boats to arrive on trailers and then be docked at the guest and member docks, so the parking lot and guest docks will be busy during this regatta. Next year, we expect more than 60 boats for the Worlds!

on and Alice Shinn purchased a Jefferson 42' Sundeck Trawler in Baltimore last October. They were feeling a little nervous about cruising again, and a little disappointed that they didn't get another sailboat for cross-ocean passages. Their answer was to name their new vessel Sacajawea, so at least one of their party would be brave! They took their new acquisition south to Marsh Harbor Boatworks in Beaufort, SC, with friends. Since they planned to live aboard, they returned to Marin, put their household goods in storage and rented-out their home. Some people say cruising is an opportunity to do maintenance in exotic places. Charleston may not be exotic, but that’s as far as Alice and Jon got before noticing a strange engine noise and heading to another boat yard. Their goal for this summer is to get up to the Canadian Coast, stopping in Edgartown for the July 4th festivities. Baring any more storms like "Bonnie" or boat problems, they’re expecting to be back south in the Chesapeake Bay in October. On the other coast , Gay and Wyman Harris rejoined Safari, their Offshore 54 in Sidney, BC. To dispense with Canadian import delays, they’re heading to Roach Harbor to pick up a water-maker part. Before guests join them later this summer, they’re heading north to Port McNeill where they’ll fly off to celebrate the 95th birthday of Wyman's mother. After time in the Broughtons with friends, they’ll go south to participate in the Commodore's Cruise in the Gulf Islands, with V/C Jerry and Karen Eaton. We (Steve and Ginger Mason) too are in the Broughtons aboard our Pearson 42’ Sea Jay. In early May, we rented a house in Sointula, Malcom Island, where our boat spent the winter. We spent a month stripping the floors – and with mission creep, some fiddles, door jams and walls – until we decided we’d had enough. Four layers of varnish later and two plus weeks to dry later, we moved onboard. After a couple of weeks sailing we’ll begin the journey south to join the Commodore's Cruise, with Jim and P/P Mimi Cornelius. Summer cruising has just begun for these and other away sailors. If you have any information to share please contact Steve & Ginger Mason at: ginger@seajay.org.

elive the amazing sailing odyssey of blue-water sailor/author SallyChristine Rodgers’ 3,000 nautical mile, 15-day journey on a new, untested boat with an experimental rig, with four-yearold twins and a nine-year-old aboard. The 65-foot cat-ketch, with wishbone rigs on unstayed carbon fiber masts, is capable of unnerving speeds of 12 to 22 knots.
