22 August August2014 2014

Our Fourth of July celebration was a success this year, and, while the weather looked threatening, we were prepared. The new parking shuttle service arrived early. Tents were added to shelter the food serving lines and increase covered activity space. Additional kid’s games were available and more staff were present to make the evening a success. If you missed this year’s event, don’t miss the 2015 celebration! I thank everyone for their cooperation and patience with parking this summer. On several days large swimming meets overlapped with Bill Smith other major club activities, resulting in a completely full parking lot. Club President However, by using the shuttle services and taking time to look for an open spaces in the lot, we kept the entry driveway clear of cars, with improved safety for everyone. Additional changes to the golf course maintenance area are underway, which will open a few more parking spaces in August. Next, the renovation of the ladies’ restroom near Bogey’s Bar will be completed by early August in time for our full schedule of fall activities. Another investment that cannot be seen, the upgrade of the WiFi network, is almost complete. Improved coverage, increased user capacity, and higher communication speed have been achieved. Also, cell phone use in the dining areas should be subject to the same guidelines as in the movie theaters. Please do not take phone calls, which will disturb other dinners; texting is a better option. As we face summer’s end, and with school starting in August, many of the activities for children are winding down. I hope families have participated in swimming, tennis, golf, or the Kid’s club. Based on family support and positive feedback, we expect even larger participation in the programs next year. Further, although many of the organized activities are ending, there will be good weather days remaining to enjoy all the amenities of our club through September. Finally, and unfortunately, Jessica Bex, Membership Director, will be leaving Meridian Hills in late August. Her great enthusiasm for the club and leadership in attracting new members will be missed. I appreciate and thank her for her service, and I am sure we all wish her well in her new Florida home. Sincerely, Bill Smith

Labor Day Hours Monday, September 1st

We are open for lunch & dinner (our regular hours) on Labor Day. So come enjoy your free time at the Club. Please remember that we are then CLOSED on Tuesday, September 2nd.

Message from theGeneral Manager In last month’s newsletter article I summarized the survey results and how each department scored. I also gave what the recommendations for improvement are in areas such as membership, clubhouse and grounds, staff, fitness, golf, swimming pool, tennis and paddle, dining and special events, Kids Club, families/teens/pre-teens, and adult only events. All of the comments were broken down and discussed with the managers responsible for the area commented on, along with corrective steps to improve or resolve the issue. Some areas that need or have seen improvements are as follows; Steve Roper, CCM, CCE Newer front of the house employees should work hard on member General Manager recognition and lean on the tenured experienced staff for guidance. More attention to detail with clubhouse maintenance and repairs and being mindful of the older members and their care is felt important. Continued replacement of old doors is taking place, painting is ongoing, flat screens were added to patio areas, an awning for protection of afternoon sun was added to Bogey’s Patio, the ladies restroom renovation is near completion and new wiring throughout the main clubhouse floor along with access points and new gear to boost WI-FI throughout the main floor is almost complete. A private club strategic planning consultant has just been engaged to develop a plan for future improvements to club amenities. This plan will be developed through the following key elements: member survey results, feedback from the Long Range Planning Committee and House Committee, and member input. The Board’s objective is to put in place “A Plan” that will prioritize improvements to the facilities year to year, looking further than a few years, and implement this plan based on the membership’s feedback. The key areas to focus on as you have told us are: clubhouse, parking, fitness/pool/kids club, and family needs. Planning will be forth coming in the months ahead. As you enjoy your club, please know that the staff’s goal is to make you and your family see MHCC as your home away from home. We are here to serve you and make your club all that you want it to be; ‘ladies and gentleman serving ladies and gentleman’. Please be mindful of your fellow members and their families, dress attire fitting the area of the club you are using, changing shoes in the locker room not visible from your car, tasteful cell phone and iPad use and just generally the respect and friendliness to each other. If any employee fails to be genuine, courteous, friendly, and helpful let me know and I will buy you a drink, and then of course, give the employee suggested steps for improvement. Jessica Bex, our Membership Director, is leaving her position at MHCC at the end of August to pursue another opportunity in Jacksonville, Florida. The outstanding job she did in her role here in membership represented the club at the highest level of professionalism and aptitude. But Jessica went beyond this role often to ensure the members were taken care of in a caring and proactive manner. While she will be sorely missed, we wish her all the best in this new chapter in her life!

The Meridian Hills Swim Team had a great season! We took fifth place at the Interclub Meet. The swimmers worked incredibly hard this season and they all had wonderful performances at the Interclub meet. A huge thank you to everyone that participated on the swim team this year, it was my pleasure coaching the team! Any swimmer that did not receive their awards from this season can pick up their trophies and ribbons from the pool, please ask a lifeguard for assistance. The team suit that received the most votes at the banquet is the TYR “Oil Slick” in multi-color. Look for more information to come next spring! Thank you again to all of the members of the swim team and their families for making it a wonderful summer, see you next year! 5 August 2014
