We had a wonderful celebration June 24, with 350 members in attendance for Jack Barber’s 25th anniversary as our golf professional. It was a worthy tribute to Jack and his family from the people he’s served for so long.

I’ve dug up a few statistics about his 25 years that might interest you. Consider that: • More than 500,000 rounds of golf have been played at our club in that time; • Approximately 4 million range balls have been struck (and picked); • 25,000 lessons have been provided by Jack and his staff; • 25 assistants have been mentored; • 400 employees have been supervised; • 685 new members have joined the club.

In the world of private country clubs, few golf professionals are able to endure so long with one facility. Jack has prospered with us, because of his outstanding commitment to member service.

I’d like to thank Mo Thomas and Boris Meditch, co-chairs of the event, for their participation that night and for arranging details of the evening. We’re also indebted to John Dunham, our pro’s mentor, for his participation in the program that evening, and to Jack’s sons, Jason and Jesse for their heartfelt remembrances. It was a GREAT NIGHT, one that will be remembered for years to come. Thanks again to Jack for all he has done in the past 25 years here at Meridian Hill Country Club.

Message from the Manager I hope everyone is enjoying their summer here at the club.

Another successful MHCC 4th of July Fireworks Party was held on Friday, July 2nd. Close to 1500 members and guests attended, and Mother Nature provided a spectacular evening of weather. A big thanks to all of you for your cooperation in wearing your wrist bands this year. This assures us that everyone is accounted for and contributing to the cost of hosting this great annual event. Plans are already underway for next year’s party which will be held on Friday, July 1, 2011.

Join us on Friday, September 10, 2010 for a great evening outdoors under the tent feasting on prime strip steaks followed by a tasting of premium scotches and cigars. Look for further details on our Cigar & Scotch Night on page 7.

A favorite event typically held each spring at Meridian Hills is our annual Father-Daughter Dance. This year we opted to move this event to Saturday, September 25, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. in hopes of increasing attendance. The Meridian Hills Princess Ball has been a long standing tradition, and a great evening for fathers and grandfathers to spend a special night together with their special daughter or granddaughter age 4-10.

Our newest event arrives this fall on Saturday, October 9, 2010 from 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

The first annual Meridian Hills Family Fall Festival will be an event you won’t want to miss.

A variety of food stations, beer garden featuring specialty beers for the adults, hay rides, pumpkin patch, fire pits with s’mores, inflatables and numerous other activities for children and adults are planned. Live Blue Grass music for your listening pleasure and the “Boo-Riffic Show” for the little ones are also on tap for the evening. This event is open to all members and guests. Please call 255-2496 for reservations.

Please join me in welcoming our new Catering Coordinator, Kelly Letzler. Kelly joins us from Hillcrest Country Club where she was in charge of all banquet and club events for the last four years. Kelly is an event planner with ten years of experience organizing and executing all types of events. Please call Kelly when you need to plan your next family or business event here at the club.

Membership Update The July New Member Reception was an excellent example of the number and the quality of new members we’ve added to our club this spring and summer. We welcomed 15 new members and with their sponsors and the Membership Committee, the party exceeded 115 people. Thanks again to everyone who has sponsored their friends to join us.

We are fortunate to accept new members after they have fulfilled the membership process. For those of you who are unaware of the membership process, our Director of Membership and Marketing, Lisa Strachota, is always available to guide you and a potential candidate along the way. Lisa will provide candidates with the information they need to determine if Meridian Hills is a good fit for them and their family. She asks the candidate to identify four current members of Meridian Hills that they know best and to contact them to request sponsorship.

Jason Challand Membership Committee On some occasions, the lead sponsor will contact the other sponsors on behalf of the candidate.

Chairman Once all of the sponsors have been contacted by the candidate or the lead sponsor, Lisa contacts the sponsors to collect a letter of recommendation on their behalf. Letters of recommendation can be submitted electronically and should be addressed to the Membership Committee. Information should include how a sponsor knows a candidate, whether it is business or personal, the length of time the sponsor has known the candidate, and why they think they would make a good member of the club.

The sooner a sponsor can submit their letter, the sooner a candidate can fulfill the membership process. Once the application and letters of recommendation have been submitted, Lisa will forward it electronically to the Membership Committee and they will vote on whether or not to post the application to the entire membership for 15 days. If approved, an email is sent to the entire membership and the notice is posted around the club and on the website. At the end of the posting period, the Chairman of the Membership Committee contacts the candidate to inform them of their membership status. If accepted, the new member will receive a new member information packet in the mail with pertinent information about the club and getting started.

Complimentary New Member Reception’s are designed to welcome new members and to thank their sponsors for securing a bright future for our club. New Member Reception’s are held on an as-needed basis and depends on the number of new members we’ve accepted. When there are enough new members to host a party, the new members and their spouses are invited and if they can attend, the sponsors and their spouses are also invited. Reservations are required for the New Member Reception which is held from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Often times, it’s nice for the new members and their sponsors to stay for dinner following the reception. Reservations for dinner are also necessary.

Thanks to all of the sponsors who have sponsored a new member. Please continue to keep membership in your mind as you meet people who aren’t a member of the club.

Tennis Update

With fall drawing near, we will keep the courts open as long as possible. Ludo, Tim & Whitney have obligations to their indoor clubs starting mid August but we will maintain the courts and be open as much as possible. We will also keep the ladies clinics going and we will keep you updated with time changes via email. The Men’s Monday night play will continue through August. This year, we had the busiest season of the last eleven years. Over 200 juniors participated in this year’s program and many more women participated in the clinics. The courts were full every Monday night with our Men’s night.

Ladies Club championship This is the first year we will be hosting a ladies event. Sixteen participants will be competing.

Ladies team tennis We had every level of ladies teams this year. Congratulations for a great season!

Men’s club Championship We have a full 32 draw in the Club championship this year. Call the pro shop and find out when the Quarterfinals, Semi Finals and Finals are to be played.

Paddle News Start getting ready for the paddle season. I will email the dates as soon as possible for the tournaments. We will begin the paddle session towards the end of October. If you are a first timer for paddle, please schedule a half hour lesson with Ludo around the beginning to middle of October. Then he will be able to place you in an appropriate group.

We hope to grow the ladies paddle program this year with the new and improved racquet facility we now have.

There is no reason we cannot have as many ladies playing paddle as we have playing tennis. It will be addictive if you stick with it through a few weeks.

The qualifying rounds will be stroke play format, with the top 4 scores in each flight from the 36 hole stroke play format advancing to the Match Play finals the following weekend. Flights will be determined by handicap, however anyone is able to opt out and qualify for the Championship Flight. There is no entry fee, as it is included in the Golf Package.

2010 Patriot Golf Day

Labor Day Weekend – September 4th-6th Mark your calendar and stay tuned for more details on this terrific weekend of golf!

During Labor Day weekend, Meridian Hills Country Club will again participate in Patriot Golf Day, which was created to benefit the Folds of Honor Foundation. The Folds of Honor provides post-secondary educational scholarships to the spouses and children of service members disabled or killed as a result of their military service to our Great Nation. The Folds of Honor Foundation was founded in 2007 by Major Dan Rooney, an F-16 pilot, golf course owner, PGA Professional and USGA member. A Major in the Air National Guard and a decorated military aviator, Rooney has served three combat tours in Iraq.

Golf Update I came across this article in one of my membership trade magazines, and I thought it would be good to share with the membership. This article does a good job summing up what all of us are experiencing throughout the Midwest.

The combined number of 90-degree days over the last two years was much less than the annual average in just one season. Cooler temperatures, overcast skies, and frequent rainfall in 2008 and 2009 provided environmental conditions similar to that of the Pacific Northwest, where Poa annua thrives. With plenty of moisture and the absence of intense heat, Poa annua populations increased on many courses. Unfortunately, Poa annua declines much faster than bentgrass during weather extremes, which is why it fell prey to winterkill damage this winter and why it appears to be fading during this summer’s heat.

Dr. Derek Settle (Chicago District Golf Assoc.) and I, along with a number of turfgrass managers, have shared concerns that the turfgrasses were not well prepared for a return to typical summer conditions. Perhaps unaware of winterkill on putting greens in the region, golfers heading out to play in the spring were not anticipating damage that was still evident on some of the greens. Poorly-drained, native soil greens with a mixed stand of Poa annua and creeping bentgrass undoubtedly suffered the worst winter injury, with some greens being reseeded or even resodded in their entirety.

Truth is, there were some excellent playing conditions this spring, but Mother Nature unceremoniously intervened at the worst possible times. Memorial Day was especially concerning to golfers returning to the North. There were instances in which scald injury, wet wilt and dry wilt occurred just hours apart. Damage to greens was not as apparent on sand-based or sand-modified root zones that had better internal drainage.

This year’s widespread turf discoloration and thinning across golf courses are telltale signs of adverse environmental conditions. Complaints about green speed and puffiness were the banter of most Chicago District golfers over Memorial Day weekend, and fairways were especially hard hit in early July when temperatures soared, humidity dropped, and winds gusted.

In response to stressful summer conditions, turfgrass managers must err on the side of caution. Expectations should be tempered, and grooming, mowing and rolling are risky at such times. Rather, to help keep turfgrasses alive, the height of cut is generally raised. Topdressing and verticutting are reduced or halted altogether until environmental conditions improve, and light applications of water, i.e. syringing, cools the turf from midday heat.

While not an excuse, Mother Nature is the principal element by which turfgrass systems and golf courses are managed and conditioned. Be patient, and know that your superintendent and grounds staff are logging long hours to do everything possible to preserve your course.
