ummer is in full swing with so many activities at The SFYC from racing, cruising, paddleboarding and simply enjoying the beautiful weather on the deck.

Youth Sailing Programs Most everyone knows that our Youth Sailing Program is considered one of the best in the country. The cover photo clearly reflects just how big the programming is with young sailors on a wide range of boats including Optis, FJs and J24s. The inset includes most everyone in the third of five sessions with a total of 280 registered to participate in 2015. Justine O’Connor – you are doing a great job! I have often said that if you are having fun, you must be winning. Many of our youth are doing just that. Congratulations to each and every one of you in regattas near and far! Something for Everyone Spend a few minutes observing the lively group of youth having great fun and you may find yourself wishing you could turn back the clock… Fortunately, there is no need to do that! Match and Team Racing on Wednesday nights and Ladies Sailing on Thursday nights on the J22s, the Championship Series, hosted regattas and cruises are fun for members, family and friends of all ages. Everything Entertaining I hope you will join us for events planned by the Entertainment Committee. The competition is building for the August 1 Chili Challenge. On September 12, dust your boots off and join us for the Country Western Night. Planning has also begun for a spectacular Commodores Ball. Please note: Reservations for this gala event may be made beginning September 2. If you wish to reserve a table, you will need to provide the names of the guests sitting with you. The names of guests are also required for reservations for smaller parties. These reservations will be honored in the order received. Work in Progress There are many projects in stages of completion. In the bar area, a new window was installed and the clearstory is being updated to recognize fellow members of the International Council of Yacht Clubs. Roly Rosic and his team have installed a safety railing along the edge of the dry storage deck in the Youth Sailing area. His team is also making great progress on the dry storage deck. This deck is more structurally sound, allows for less rolling resistance when moving boats and looks great. With regard to the proposed Regatta Center, the Facilities Planning Committee is working closely with our architects on our submission to the City of Belvedere. Yacht Clubs Who Care On April 23, 2015, The SFYC was acknowledged as a founding member of the Coast Guard Foundation’s Yacht Clubs Who Care (YCWC) supporting Coast Guard personnel and their families. Additional information on activities they are offering to members of YCWC will be published in the Bow Wave. Carry on,

CROSSING WAKES

Steve and Ginger Mason steve@seajay.org

Cruising is Not Just a Boating Experience e (Steve & Ginger Mason) are on Sea Jay for another summer of cruising in the Pacific Northwest. Often it takes just being present to see the drama of nature around us. This was the case in Captain Cove, our last stop prior to going into Prince Rupert. It was late evening but still quite light with the dark of night about 11 p.m. here this time of year. There were all kinds of bird noises and crows were chasing an eagle. The eagle was not paying any attention but was focused on a seagull. The gull had been chasing the eagle but the chase turned as the gull was momentarily but insecurely captured in the eagle's talons and then dropped to the water.

W

Gull momentarily but insecurely captured in the eagle's talons

eagle's mate soon approached and their dependent juvenile was close by to share in the catch. Both of us began to breathe again realizing how tense we had become during the hunt. The quiet life in the cove returned to normal. (PS. The next evening we observed an eagle being chased by a squeaking gull. They don't learn.)

chasing the eagle but the chase turned…” Now the eagle wanted its prey back. As the eagle dove the injured gull attempted to fly off but quickly returned to the water out of reach of the talons. With each pass, the number of crows chasing increased until more than a dozen squeaked in pursuit. The eagle rested momentarily then began to stalk its prey again. The crows were replaced by gulls who objected to the attack. The show lasted a good 15 minutes but didn't end when the eagle latched onto the gull. The eagle didn't fly off, it was in the water with the gull, now surely dead and securely grasped by its strong talons…but now what? We had heard eagles could swim but had never observed such behavior. They do. The wings were used in a great breast stroke that quickly got the bird to shore where it began devouring its catch under the watchful eye of the lesser birds. The

We arrived in Prince Rupert on June 2, probably our sixth time in town. Often when you've visited a town several times you think you know the place but more than likely some feature has been overlooked. What a pleasant surprise when that gem is discovered. Next to the Hecket Strait Employment Development office, we spied an uninviting tunnel with graffiti lined walls. But once through, another world was revealed, a sunken garden. The colors and fragrances were a gift to the senses and the peace and quiet of the place made it a unique find. This jewel is lovingly manicured by volunteers. My pictures can not do it justice but at least they are a representation where unfortunately the enchanting smells can not be bottled.

Deck Rebuilding Progress Report ork on the resurfacing of the dry storage deck is moving along very nicely. About half of the surface planking and supporting joists below have been installed. The work is ahead of schedule and on budget according to Chris Lacy, who is overseeing the project on behalf of the Harbor Committee, and Kevin Tentis. A new safety railing now guards the edge of the deck along the Youth Sailing area that was exposed after removal of the old grey dock-boxes. Several electrical posts and dock fixtures have been relocated, with several more to come. Other necessary modifications and repairs not readily visible are being made where required as the resurfacing work moves down the dock. Owing to the need to work only at very low "minus" tides, placement of new vertical strengthening posts along the sheet pile wall below the deck's surface will not be completed until next winter and spring. But for now, our goal is to complete all resurfacing work before the Leukemia Cup activities this fall.

RACE NEWS

Forrest Gay, Director of Sailing race@sfyc.org

SFYC Regatta Partner Appreciation he San Francisco Yacht Club is fortunate to have many quality corporate partners supporting our SFYC sailing regattas this year! The significant contributions from Martin Ray Winery, Dry Creek Vineyard, TrumerPils, Lagunitas Brewery and Whole Foods Market have created a more enjoyable experience for our racing competitors, member spectators and guests. These outstanding sponsors have enabled The Club to raise the bar on the important social aspects of our regattas, making these events even more exciting! Most importantly, our association with these elite brands reinforces the belief from the international sailing community that The San Francisco Yacht Club is one of the premiere regatta hosts in the world. This relationship is also the community connection between SFYC, its members and these exceptional companies. As we plan for the proposed Regatta Center, this is an appropriate time to reflect back upon the rich history of yacht racing at SFYC over the past 146 years. Just as we are making important capital improvements on our club property to ensure that our great yacht racing tradition will continue well into the future, it is just as important to take steps to ensure that the social events tied to our regattas are maintained at a world-class level. Every SFYC member can make a valuable contribution to this effort by simply supporting our corporate partner brands. We all purchase wine, beer and groceries. Your loyalty to these brands – both at the club and around town – will go a long way toward building strong partnerships that will provide tremendous benefits both now and for future generations of members.

8 THE BULLETIN l AUGUST 2015

Race Committee Report he San Francisco Yacht Club Race Committee has been busy for the first half of the year organizing and running 19 regattas through July. The regattas have ranged from one-day Club Series events to large multi-fleet regattas with two race courses, along with numerous youth regattas. The largest regatta thus far was the Elite Keel in mid-May, which drew 68 boats in nine fleets. Running all of these events requires an army of volunteer race committee. While Lisa Turner and Forrest Gay assist in the shoreside logistics of registration and scoring the volunteer race committee on the water ranges from five to 15 people, and so far this year the SFYC Race Committee has used 191 individual volunteer days. We look forward to a full calendar as we move into the late summer and fall and certainly need continued regatta support in the form of markboat drivers and crews, Victory drivers and all other race committee personnel that it takes to run the high level of regattas that SFYC has come to be known for. Some of the highlights of the fall schedule are the Summer Keel Regatta in mid August, the Optimist PCCs, and Melges 20 PCCs and World Championship in September. These Melges regattas will be labor intensive so please look into getting involved with the race committee if you can. The Melges 20 World Championship will impact The Club both on the docks and in the parking lot. Boats and teams will begin arriving at SFYC on September 21 and will be here through October 4. The guest and member docks will accommodate the races for this time and the parking lot will have trailers in it. An estimate of 40 or more boats is the current guess, so please plan for a full and crowded parking lot during this period. We look forward to putting on a great world championship for the class on the Berkeley Circle.

T

Great San Francisco Schooner Race his year we hosted the eighth Great San Francisco Schooner Race. There were four boats in the Gaff Division and five boats in the Marconi Division including newcomer Mayan with Beau Vrolyk at the helm. As a pursuit start, it was a wild ride as competitors tried to reel each other in. At the end of the day, the perpetual trophy was awarded to Alexis Ford Kernot and the Yankee crew in the Gaff Division and Angie and Alan Olson and the Seaward crew in the Marconi Division.

RACE NEWS

Independence Cup: As Close as it Can Get he two-race regatta on the 4th of July produced some of the closest results possible this year. The top two boats were tied on points in both fleets. In the Spinnaker Division it was Tim Russell’s Pain Killer and S/C Bill Melbostad’s JR both with 3 points. Pain Killer won the tiebreaker by winning the second race over JR by just 3 seconds, even after Melbostad had brilliantly port tacked the fleet. In the Non-Spinnaker Division things were shaken up a bit by Steve Stroub’s Tiburon moving into that division and tying Glenn Isaacson’s Q overall with 4 points. Again, it was down to the tiebreaker, this time with Tiburon getting the overall win by beating Q by just 20 seconds in the second race to tie them on points.

Robert Heller

An American Immigrant’s Journey from the Ruins of Wartime Germany to the Federal Reserve Board

A

true American odyssey, Robert Heller chronicles his journey from the caves and cellars of warravaged Germany to the United States and his rise to Governor of the Federal Reserve Board and the President and CEO of VISA U.S.A.

He takes us behind the scenes at the Federal Reserve Board, where he served alongside with Paul Volcker and Alan Greenspan, revealing what went on behind closed doors in the formulation of U.S. monetary policy and during the banking crisis of the 1980s. He also chronicles his return to the private sector, detailing the confused scenes as the credit card giant VISA is torn between chaos and order during his challenging service at the helm of the organization.

Please R.S.V.P. to The SFYC Front Office 415 435 9133 ext. 10 office@sfyc.org or for your convenience go to www.sfyc.org These events are free for Members and their guests.
