2014 BOARD of GOVERNORS Bob Shema, Chair Bill Bailey, Lowelle Childers, Chuck Hosler, Lydia Karney, Hank Kimbriel, John Longenecker, Pat McMahon, Alex Pier, Sharon Pfaff
Chair’s Chatter
A
s I sit down to write this quarterly Chairman’s Message, I had been confronted with some very sad news. Our very own Hank Kimbriel, Board of Governor’s member and head of our Technology subcommittee, passed away on August 10, 2014. Hank had been a member of the Club since its beginning and volunteered his time by serving on the Fitness Committee as well as recently on the Board. He had great passion and enthusiasm for our Club and our members who became extended family to him, as it does to us all. I recently had the pleasure of getting to know Hank as he spearheaded our technology initiative. There was no task too small for Hank. He worked diligently to set up meetings with vendors and the Club’s IT department to help move us closer to meeting our goals, always focused and determined to find ways to improve the Club. His sweet wife Kimberly also carries these traits and serves on our Social Food and Beverage Committee. Hank was a true friend and a great guy who will be dearly missed by us all!

Many of you know our former Board of Governors Chairman and Byron & Peggy Nelson Legacy Award winner, Joe Cleary. Joe lost his son Joe Jr. on August 2. Joe was a sweet soul and rarely met a stranger. He enjoyed spending time at the Club and we always enjoyed his company. Please join me in offering our heart felt condolences to both the Cleary and Kimbriel families. It is during difficult times such as these that having the support of good friends and family members like our community of people at the Club, that can help ease the pain of our lost loved ones. I also wanted to take a moment and briefly discuss the survey you received from Rob in early August. Many of you are aware the Club has partnered with a well-known marketing firm called Mindsight to produce and execute a new broad-scope research survey. The survey recently went out to the membership and the surrounding community at large; it was aimed at fully enhancing your member experience and gathering your feedback to help shape the future of health and wellness offerings at the Club. Hopefully you all took the time and participated as your responses are very important. It is an exciting time at the Club and we are anxious to see how the results propel the direction of the Club improvements. Sincerely, Bob Shema, Board of Governors Chairman ringo@designblockzero.com
Erin Epperson, Personal Trainer and Nutrition Specialist
A
s a pre and post-natal fitness specialist (and pregnant with #3 myself ), it is so very important to remain active during pregnancy and plenty of incentive to exercise. Those awesome post-gym endorphins keep your mood and energy up, helping to combat sluggishness. Plus, regular sweat sessions help to build up your strength for delivery and ease back pain. Remaining active with cardio and incorporating at least two days of strength training will help decrease your risk of diabetes, preeclampsia, hypertension, fight pregnancy fatigue, better sleep, have an easier labor and speed up your postpartum recovery. Here are some basic tips to stay on track during pregnancy:
• Instead of consuming for two, think 200. All you need is an additional 200 calories per day to help nourish you and your baby. Think a banana and a piece of string cheese, NOT cheese fries!
• Try to get 30 minutes of walking (if you are a jogger you may continue as long as you are comfortable and your joints are stable) 4-5 days per week. Do not over exert yourself while strength training. If you typically use 10-15 pound weights, drop down to 5-8 pounds. • What is too much? Use the “talk test.” If you can carry on a conversation, then you are fine. If you are winded, then take it down a notch. •
If you have any questions, please contact Erin Epperson at the Fitness Desk at (972) 717-2560. TheSportsClubFourSeasons.com | 2

Cool October
I
n 1992, Four Seasons Resort and Club embarked on a journey with the Irving Healthcare Foundation to help fight cancer for a healthier community. The Resort, along with Sports Club members, employees and local businesses and community partners, come together each year to raise money for the cause. To date, the Cool October events have generated more than $2.5 million. One hundred percent of these proceeds have supported new and enhanced cancer services at Baylor Irving, the city’s only nonprofit charitable hospital. Since our journey began in 1992, every advancement at the Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center has been funded either fully or in part by proceeds from the Cool October efforts. 2014 marks the 50th birthday of Baylor Medical Center at Irving, as well as a very special year for our beloved marathoners – Robin Scott, Paul Earnest and Michelle Miller. It is the year of their 50th birthdays! They all have personal connections to cancer and have put forth years, tears and countless efforts to raise money for the cause. Please consider supporting them as they aim to make this year a memorable one to celebrate 50! Mark your calendar for the following Cool events, as you won’t want to miss them! 9/20 Cool Octoberfest Concert featuring LIVE 80 + Member Chili Cookoff 10/3 Tennis Marathon + Golf Marathon 10/4 Spin-a-thon 10/14 Cool 18 Golf Tournament 9/20-10/15 Online Auction This year’s overall fundraising goal is $120,000, and funds support four pieces of key equipment for the Cancer Center. Bill and Dottie Mattingly
T
he Sports Club has been around since 1983, and so have Bill and Dottie Mattingly! They were eager to join as tennis members and were able to take a hardhat tour of the almost finished Club with Nick Thurman. Since then the Mattinglys have been involved in several sports and social events during their tenure at the Club. “We absolutely love everything about the Club, especially our fellow members and those who take care of us every day. The best thing about the Club is the friendships we have gained over the years, truly the best. We love them all!” says Bill and Dottie or Dot. “It’s like being with our Club family every day and the food and drink is not half bad either.” Bill is an avid doubles racquetball and squash player and dabbles in golf occasionally. Dot is involved in Yoga, Boot Camp and Spinning, plus other social activities offered at the Club. Some of you might not know this, but Dot was our Cool October Chili Cookoff winner in 2013, BEATING Executive Chef Christof! Her chili is the best and no secrets here...Dottie is happy to share her recipe! Bill, recently retired from law enforcement, on July 1, 2014. He started his volunteer police career in 1988 with the Irving Police Department and retired as a Reserve Officer and Bailiff in Bartonville. During his tenure, Bill was President of the Irving Police Reserve Association, a member of the IPD Honor Guard, a member of the Irving Police Association and Reserve Division member of the IPD Chiefs Operational Committee. “I also had a ‘real job’ as Manager of Sales - TWA, in Tulsa and a ‘real fun job’ as a Senior Flight Attendant for American
Airlines based in St. Louis.” Currently, Bill and Dottie are Managing Partners at Corporate Speakers Group, based here in Irving. Dottie and Bill have been married for 47 years and have travelled the world extensively. Dottie also recently retired as Manager of Corporate Recruitment at American Airlines after 40 plus years with the company. With a little more “free time,” they recently returned from an extended trip to Israel where they visited family in Jerusalem and saw the sights of the “Holy Land.” Many of you know this lovely couple, but those who do not, I would encourage you to meet them. It has been a pleasure getting to know them and witness all the wonderful things they contribute to our Club and community.

What We Do, Maybe You Should To!
Scott Abernathy Director of Golf Course Maintenance and Landscaping scott.abernathy@fourseasons.com
C
ooler weather produces big changes on the golf courses and in our home lawns. Primarily, turfgrass growth rates slow and eventually go dormant. This doesn’t mean however, we can stop caring for it. There are several practices that Golf Operations does during this time of year that you might want to do as well.
Winterizer Fertilization In late September, we apply a winterizer fertilizer to all bermudagrass areas. Winterizer fertilizers contain low nitrogen, low phosphorus and high potassium. Potassium helps strengthen turfgrass resistance which allows the turf to better tolerate winter stresses. The better the grass goes through the winter the stronger it will be in the spring and summer. Winterizer fertilizers can be purchased at most local hardware stores and garden centers. Pre-emergent Weed Control Applying pre-emergent weed control products help prevent unsightly weed germination on the golf course. As the name implies, these products prevent weed seed germination. Golf Operations applies pre-emergents at various times of the year to all the bermudagrass area to help keep the turf looking healthy and weed free. Similar products are available for home lawns and can be purchased at your local hardware stores and garden centers. For winter seed control, it is best if pre-emergents are applied by mid to late August. They can be applied later but some weed seed germination might have already occurred. Winter Irrigation Management A very critical and often overlooked aspect of caring for turfgrass in the winter is water management. Despite the fact that the grass appears dead, it is in fact alive and still requires irrigation. The idea is to maintain some moisture in the profile. This will prevent turf desiccation which can kill grass. Also, water in the soil acts as a thermal buffer and helps insulate and protect turf when temperatures drop below freezing. Therefore it is very important to make sure your soil has good moisture prior to each freeze. Thus, watering frequencies in the winter should be reduced but not eliminated.

These are just a few practices that Golf Operations does this time of year. You might want to consider them for your home lawns. If you have any questions about these topics please feel free to contact any Golf Operations Manager.
