FROM THE COMMODORE commodore@sfyc.org

ith our 146th Annual Meeting now behind us, I am focused on the year – and years – ahead of us. I am deeply honored to be Commodore of our prestigious club. The SFYC did not get to world-class status by accident. Our membership is second to none, and clearly dedicated to making our club a destination to be enjoyed.

W

Before we move forward, I want to express my gratitude to dedicated members leaving the Wheelhouse, or moving into different leadership roles, for their tremendous contributions to our Club last year. First, special thanks to new Junior Staff Commodore Suzie Moore and her husband Bryan for all that they have done. After pouring her heart and soul into The SFYC, I hope a well-earned vacation is on the calendar for them. We also owe a debt of gratitude to: outgoing Harbor Chair David Cobb and House Chair Director Paul Rosenlund; Helen Reilly and Marily Rimmer for their fantastic work as our Auxiliary Co-Presidents; and Director Tina Lundh and Secretary Dan Buckstaff, who will be missed on the board. With Charles Froeb, Robert Brant and Andy Fromm joining as Directors, Laurence Bekins as Secretary, and Paul Rosenlund as Rear Commodore, we are making great additions to our strong team at the Board level. Our committees also have an incredibly talented pool of dedicated volunteers. I’m happy to welcome Christopher Lacey as our Harbor Chair, Paul (Dino) Dinovitz as our House Chair, Stephanie Stroub as our new Auxiliary President, and Helen Reilly and Shana Rohde-Lynch (my lovely wife) as our new Entertainment Co-Chairs. These great, new additions will round out our dynamic team for 2016 and complement the great work done by our other committee leaders including, our Treasurer Don Jesberg, Race Chair Nancy Demauro, RDC Chair Angie Lackey-Olson, Member Chair and Director Stu Reilly, Youth Chair Patty Young, S/C Wendy Miller along with S/C Bill Melbostad on Protocol Committee, S/C Jim Robinson with Jay Hooker as our Eight Bells Co-Chairs, Cruising Chair Jib Martens, Historical Chair S/C Ken Frost and Rich Wideman assisted by Robert Schmidt as Port Captains. All of their great work and our member experience are supported by our hard working staff, under the great management of our General Manager, Steve DePetro. The annual meeting is always the fun time of year when we announce the Yachtsman of the Year and recognize the Yachtswoman of the Year, and this year was no exception. Both honorees, Vice Commodore Jerry Eaton and Madeline Morey, were very deserving and have given a great deal to The SFYC. As we move into 2016, I hope to have exciting news regarding our proposed Regatta Center, with the plans now making their way through the City of Belvedere Planning Department. Let’s have a fun, safe and enjoyable 2016!

AUXILIARY

Stephanie Stroub, President stephcannell@yahoo.com

There’s a new President in town… ver the past two years, I’ve had the great privilege of working on the Auxiliary Committee, where I’ve formed life-long friendships. So, I am especially happy and honored to serve members of The San Francisco Yacht Club as your 2016 Auxiliary President. I look forward to working with our new Commodore Ed Lynch, the other new committee Chairs (congratulations on your new positions!), and the rest of The Club leadership team. I’m proud to introduce an amazing new Auxiliary board, including: Vice President Julie Zanze; Secretary Emily Heller; Treasurer Annie Mendenhall; Directors Paige Brooks, Shannon Cantwell, Jennifer Cromar, Velda Demmert, Kim Lynch, Barbara McCrum, Stephanie Portillo, and Andrina Ramirez; P/P Marily Rimmer and P/P Helen Reilly; and Honorary member Shana Rohde-Lynch (yeah!). Please congratulate them when you see them around The Club. As I’m sure you noticed, The Club was bustling with goings on in December. Kicking off the month, leading-lady elves Eugenia Jesberg and Jolynn Hardiman were busy rallying a team of decorators in setting up the trees, wreaths, and trains…oh, and mistletoe. We know it takes an elf village to turn The Club into the winter wonderland we all dream about during the holidays, so many thanks to every one who helped. Make sure to tell Chef Reny how great the Regatta Center looked (I think he has a future in design). Kudos to Carol Anderson, who also deserves an honorable mention. Everything looked magical for the Get Lit celebration. It’s a favorite of mine, and I hope you had the chance to see it. Twenty-four boats participated, and the harbor looked beautiful. Commodore Ed Lynch took the first-place prize, Joseph Carapiet won second place, and Ashley Perrin and Tina Lundh won third place for their great dry-dock decorations. I want to personally thank Co-Chair Emily Heller and the judges, Barbara McCrum, Eugenia Jesberg and Jolynn Hardiman. Our exciting year-end activities also included several prestigious award presentations. In the spirit of congratulations, I’d

like to recognize the honorees (please hold your applause ‘til the end…). First, the Auxiliary was pleased to present the Bill Black Award to Thomas Young. Thank you, Eugenia Jesberg, for representing the Auxiliary in presenting the award to this amazing junior sailor. At the Annual Auxiliary Meeting the following week, our 2014 Yachtswoman of the Year, Anne McCormack, presented the 2015 Marianne Mason Yachtswoman of the Year award to a most-deserving Madeline Morey. Harvey Rogers and Vicki Sodaro presented Stephanie Wondolleck with the Nancy Rogers Race Grant. And, we also announced the winners of the Special Service awards: P/P Lori Fromm honored S/C Jim and Martha Robinson, and P/P Elizabeth Merrill recognized P/P Mimi Cornelius for their dedication and devotion to The Club. Our keynote speaker, Ashley Perrin, did an amazing job crunching her lifetime of impressive sailing achievements into a 30-minute presentation – and did it so humbly. I was so proud to turn to the person sitting next to me, and say “Hey, she’s one of my closest friends.” Next time you see her, ask her why she had chocolate in her hair... Now, we can applaud all our honorees! Finally, we wrapped up our Auxiliary events for the year with our Holiday Gala dinner dance, where members once again showed we know how to cut a rug and ring in the holidays! Our annual visit from Santa was also a great hit (negotiations are underway about whether or not his naughty and nice list will be published in the next Bulletin). Now onto 2016 … Before you know it, we will be sailing into Spring. Easter at The Club is a family-must, coming up on March 27, so mark your calendars. A lot is in store this year, so keep yourself glued to the Bow Wave and Bulletin so you don’t miss your favorite events. And, if you are interested in helping with any of our events, please reach out and let us know! See you all at The Club!

Race Appreciation Night By Nancy DeMauro

n 2015, Race Recognition Night became Race Appreciation Night. Because, without all our dedicated Racers and Volunteers, we would not be able to run such a premiere race program. The Race Council and Race Development Council wanted to have a chance to say ‘Thank You’ to all who were involved in the Race Program. In 2015, SFYC hosted 34 regattas over 50 days of racing. We added a new regatta this year, The Auxiliary Cup – which is an all women’s regatta. The regatta was a huge success and we look forward to an even bigger regatta in 2016. In addition, SFYC was honored to host the Audi Melges20 World Championship in October. The Club Series continued to grow, with 42 boats participating. For 2015, we had several new sponsors including Whole Foods, Dry Creek Vineyards, Martin Ray Winery and TrumerPils. Congratulations are in order to S/C Bill and Frances Melbostad on JR in the Spinnaker Division and Richard and Mark Pearce on Fjaer in the Non-Spinnaker Division as the 2015 Club Series Champions and winners of the King George V Perpetual Trophy. In addition to the SFYC events, many of our members race in countless outside regattas. While it isn’t possible to list all of our racers, here are a few of our winners: Shawn Bennett, Team SFYC, US Match

Special congratulations goes to John Kilroy, Samba Pa Ti, who came in first place and Liam Kilroy, Wildman, who came in third place at the Audi Melges 20 World Championship. In addition, we are proud to have the San Francisco Cup back at SFYC. Congratulations to the skippers, Chris Perkins – Open Division, Katie Maxim – Women’s Division and Jack Barton – Youth Division and their crews for their success in 2015. And finally, SFYC could not succeed without the volunteers that we have helping at every regatta. In 2015, we added a new level to our volunteer program – Platinum. This year, we had 124 on-the water volunteers with 9 of those qualifying for Platinum, with over 15 days each! In addition, this year we had two outstanding volunteers who received the MVP for Volunteering – then Commodore Suzie Moore and Shawn Davies.

THE SFYC 2015 YACHTSWOMAN OF THE YEAR

Madeline Morey ach year, The Club singles out a female member to honor with the Marianne Mason Award for the Outstanding Yachtswoman of the Year. Recipients are selected based on their active interest in sailing, their extensive contribution of time to Club activities, and their demonstrated leadership, cooperation and respect. This year, the nominating committee and Board of Directors are proud to recognize Madeline Morey with this prestigious award. Madeline fell in love with life on the water as a child on Galveston Island, Texas, where she earned her Girl Scouts sailing badge and was an avid water skier. After moving to the Bay Area in 1987 to join her best friend after the birth of her oldest goddaughter, Madeline quickly took to the (much colder) water again. Always up for a challenge, sailing with friends ignited a desire to skipper her own boat, and she purchased and campaigned a Catalina 30. A few years later, she moved up to the Beneteau 321 San Souci, and rumor has it that another boat (that points higher) is on the way! She sails often, racing exclusively under The SFYC burgee and enjoying day sails on the Bay with her many friends. There may be no greater testament to the camaraderie and bonds of friendship she’s created through sailing than the fact that

some members of her crew have been sailing with her for almost 30 years. Her Corinthian spirit and love of the sport have touched the lives of those beyond her long-time friends, family and crew. In preparation for the Inaugural Auxiliary Cup regatta, she took several other female skippers – women who would ultimately compete against her – out on her boat and their boats to mentor them and increase their confidence in the starting sequence. She also wrote a tutorial of starting sequence tips based on wind and current for them to have as an ongoing reference. In another instance, she received high praise and recognition from the Race Chair of the Corinthian Yacht Club for withdrawing from the race and standing by when a competitor lost a sailor overboard during one of the 2015 Friday Night Races. Through her active participation in Race Committee, countless racers from around the world have benefited from Madeline’s passion for sailing and service to The Club. SFYC members Dale Closner and Chris Dawson were among the first friends Madeline met after moving to California, and they sponsored her membership to The Club in 2001. At the end of an introductory race

management meeting that Madeline attended, Staff Commodore Wendy Miller asked if anyone had computer skills and an interest in racing. Madeline raised her hand, and that launched 14 years of Race Committee volunteering. She mastered every scoring program that we’ve used, and has been called "relentless" in ensuring that results are accurate. She mentors others to continue building The Club’s scoring/recording bench strength, and is always eager to encourage volunteers and to show appreciation for their work. It seems the more Madeline volunteered, the broader her interest and impact. In 2011 she became a member of the Race Council, and has served on the organizing committee for several national and international regattas hosted by SFYC over the last few years. Beyond the many years she’s devoted to the race program, this yachtswoman has served for three years on the SFYC Nominating Committee for the Board of Directors, and for two years as an active member of our Finance Committee. She also enjoys our club social activities and consistently supports the Auxiliary events. On more personal notes, energy and passion have been defining characteristics throughout Madeline’s life. Keeping her options open, she earned a Bachelors of Arts degree in Sociology and a Bachelors of

Science degree in Electronics Technology from the University of Houston. Ever a self-made woman, she paid her way through university by touring the nation as a sound engineer for the country swing band Asleep at the Wheel. After graduating, Madeline went the high-tech route. Her work managing the

Friday night crew

research and development efforts of several entrepreneurial software companies took her around the world to places such as Russia, Australia, the Philippines, Great Britain, and Europe. She ultimately worked her way up to Chief Technical Officer at SPL World Group. When it was acquired by Oracle in 2006, she stayed on as Senior Vice President during the transition before leaving to accept a position as Chief Operating Officer of eMeter Corp. In 2009, she left high-tech behind to enter retirement –

which in Madeline’s case means working part time managing her husband’s business. She met her husband Bob – love of her life – in 1997 through fellow board members of Big Brothers Big Sisters. He shared her love of all things nautical, and they were married in 2006 on a beach at sunset in Kona, HI. Never wanting to be too far from the water, they live part time in their home in San Rafael and part time on Bob’s power boat. Some of the things Bob says about Madeline would make many of us envious: “She’s such a talented woman at everything she does. I’m always so proud of her - it’s Photo by Diana Jason exhausting! She’s good at cooking, friendships, business relationships everything she touches turns to gold. She is so sincere. She is the best wife imaginable and I adore her." A few more notes about this amazing Yachtswoman: She is a novice oil painter and she is a certified scuba diver who’s traveled to many exotic places around the world to pursue diving. She is even certified to officiate at weddings, which she puts to good use right on her boat! In addition to her family, in-laws, and stepchildren and grand-children, she counts as

Delta Trip 1997

family her two god daughters whose marriages she performed. Fortunately for The Club and its members, Madeline will continue to actively participate at SFYC over the coming year on the Race Council and Finance Committee, as well as working on the organizing committee for two major regattas. We hope you’ll join us in congratulating Madeline!

This article was adapted from the presentation given at The SFYC Auxiliary meeting by Anne McCormack, 2014 Yachtswoman of the Year. The other members of the selection committee were then Commodore Suzie Moore, S/C Wendy Miller, Paige Brooks, Gaby Isaacson, Tina Lundh, and Stephanie Stroub.

If you are an artist, musician, sculptor, writer, scrimshaw artist, model boat builder or otherwise talented in things beyond sailing and yachting, please let us know. We plan to have a late-March Saturday exhibit of members' talents. If this turns out to be a popular event, which we imagine it will, we hope to do it every year. The SFYC welcomes Paw Andersen as a Regular Member. Paw, and his wife Csilla, live in Tiburon. He is the Director of Engineering for Uber, Inc., in San Francisco. Paw was introduced to sailing and power boating at a very early age in his native Denmark, and assisted his grandfather in the restoration of a vintage, 35’ tugboat. After a high-tech career – mostly in Europe – Paw relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area two years ago and immediately set out to renew his sailing activities. In 2014, he took ASA Basic Keelboat and coastal cruising classes at Modern Sailing in Sausalito. He and his wife regularly charter boats for day sailing on the Bay, and look forward to joining both racing and cruising crews at SFYC. Paw is sponsored by Chris Povio and seconded by Andrina Ramirez.

FROM

THE

MANAGER

Steve DePetro, General Manager

ith 2015 now passed, it is a good opportunity to take a moment to reflect on what was an excellent year for SFYC. Suzie Moore was an outstanding Commodore who inspired us all...staff and membership. Her energy, enthusiasm, and support made the year a special one! Member participation in all areas of club activities was outstanding. A special thanks on behalf of The Club staff goes to the membership for the generous support of the Employee Holiday Fund, which was much appreciated by our employees. The Auxiliary was also very generous with its contribution to the Employee Holiday Party!

Congratulations goes to Nestor Marin in the Dining Room for being selected as Employee of the Year by the management team. Nestor is a great representative of a very dedicated staff. He started out in the Galley as a dishwasher, worked very hard, and is now a food runner in the Dining Room. As The Club moves into 2016, The SFYC staff looks to help make the year a very enjoyable one for the membership. With Commodore Ed Lynch leading the way, we all look for a great 2016.
