Membership Connection

M

any new and exciting things are happening around the Club. To help improve our Member communication we’ve revamped our existing website and weekly emails to navigate a little easier as well as feature more articles rather than just results from tournaments or photos from events. We’ve seen an increase in both readership and site usage since this started mid May.

In an effort to assist both the Membership and Club staff to better identify our Members and guests, we’ve been working on identifying each of you in the photos from the most recent events. We will include links on the website for both the Father’s Day and the Wine Festival photos where you will find yourself and others identified. This will help put names to familiar and unfamiliar faces. If you wish to not be identified please contact us and we’ll remove accordingly. Feel free to leave comments on photos if you see someone is not identfied or is incorrectly marked.

Mr. Jim Coufos, his wife Viki and their son Christian (11), whom I had the pleasure of, as Members of my last Private Club, joined us as Regular Members on May 1st. Jim is retired and sits on multiple philanthropic organization boards and is working on his golf game. Thank you Dr. Steve Weiss and Mr. Bill Overfelt for sponsoring.

Please find a short bio and photo of our newest Members in the right column and help us welcome the Coufos’ and Christenson’s as well as congratulate the Cupps family on their Membership conversion from Social to Regular.

T

hank you to those Members who have recently referred their friends or co-workers for Membership. The current initiation fee has generated some buzz and the Club has seen an increase in interest for Regular Membership. Our best source of new Members is our current Membership; the wonderful summer weather and the reduction in guest fees on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays presents a great opportunity to bring your prospects to the Club. Some of you may have noticed the recent postings in the locker rooms. It was expressed at the town hall meeting that the membership would like to be more involved with the application process of prospective Members. We now require all applicants to be sponsored by two existing Members as well as have their photo and basic information posted in the Men’s and Ladies’ Locker Rooms for twenty (20) days. This gives you, the Member, the opportunity to express your support or concerns regarding a candidate. All information will be kept confidential and should be communicated to Steve Buck, General Manager. Please feel free to contact us or any of the Membership Committee Members should you have any specific questions regarding the membership process.

Mr. Roy Christenson and his wife Carol joined the Club on May 13th as Social Members after moving into their home in Shady Canyon. They are avid travelers and were drawn to the Club by the active social calendar which caters not only to their needs but also to their many grandchildren. Thank you to Mr. Bill Overfelt and Cody Ball for sponsoring the Christenson’s into the Club.

Mr. Michael Cupps, his wife Wendy and their 2 children; Danielle (13) and Briana (11), converted their Membership from Social to Regular on May 22nd. Already getting into the swing of things on the Golf side, Mr. Cupps has been enjoying a couple rounds a week on the course. Thank you to Mr. Sudesh Mariappa and Mr. George Wood for sponsoring their conversion.

The Splash About Copper River Salmon

by: Zack Bates, Membership Retention Manager

E

very May, around the 15th, you hear restaurants and foodies buzzing - “Copper River salmon season is here!” Copper River salmon? Salmon is salmon right? Why is everyone making such a fuss over it? Alaska’s Copper River is of the longest, deeply cut 300 mile stretches of glacier-fed waters in the Northwest. These conditions contribute to the salmon having a healthy store of natural oils (Omega-3) and body fat. One of the reasons Copper River salmon are so prized is that the salmon are handled very carefully when caught, being bled and dressed immediately, put on ice and shipped out fresh. One taste of this firm red fish, with its rich and nutty flavor, and you will understand why food lovers relish the three to four weeks that fresh Copper River salmon is available each year. The Annual Arrival of Copper River Salmon Northwest seafood lovers have turned the midMay to mid-June Copper River salmon season into an annual celebration. Restaurateurs and markets compete to be the first to get an icepacked shipment of the fresh salmon. Area newspapers fill with advertisements announcing availability at fine dining establishments. Copper River salmon is a big deal in Pacific Northwest and has been embraced by the Membership here at Shady Canyon. Jonathan Tse and his son Brandon (pictured upper-right) have taken advantage of the Club’s ability to access the delicacy over the past few weeks. “It’s such a delicious fish, it’s hard to order anything else because of its very limited season. I just have to get it everytime.” Hopefully you didn’t miss the boat (pun intended) and had the opportunity to try Chef ’s weekend special while the Copper River was still available. If not, mark your calendars for May 2010!

Wonderful Time.” By: Alexis Wensman, Director of Catering

S

ummer is upon us and with this warm season comes children’s parties, fundraisers and weddings. The number of private events at the Club has substantially increased over the past few months. In fact over the next two months every Saturday night is reserved for a private party. If you would like to host a function at the Club, please contact the Catering Department as soon as possible to ensure that space is saved for your special event! We have begun a new system of evaluating events by sending out surveys to each event contact to receive their post-event feedback. The contact is asked to rate each category according to a scale of one to five. There is also space where additional comments may be offered, as well as names of any outstanding employee(s). We are proud to say that we receive mostly all 5’s! Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to complete and return the surveys. It is our goal to exceed your expectations.

the Doctor will see you! S

teve Hutchins has been on staff at the Spa & Fitness Center for almost two years. He provides our Members with years of experience in the health & fitness industry. In the late 1980’s he earned his degree in Exercise Physiology from East Stroudsburg University and moved to California as a Personal Trainer. He continued his education and received his doctorate degree in Chiropractic in 2002. He realized while he was training clients many had injuries and pains that could be addressed in a training session. He believed he could provide long term relief of pain and injury by incorporating both physiotherapy and trigger point therapy (both skills taught in chiropractic school and massage school) in his clients routines. Trigger point therapy is an effective tool in relieving pain and dysfunction in other parts of the body by applying pressure to tender muscle tissue. Latent trigger points are believed to be one of the causes of stiff joints and restricted range of motion as we age. As we lose range of motion in the joints and surrounding muscles it affects our golf swing. Over time the body compensates to avoid pain and develops new patterns of movement that are outside of the normal range of motion causing changes in a persons swing pattern. In 2005 he continued his education and became a Certified Golf Specialist through the Blanchard School of Golf . With over 20 years experience Steve has developed a reputation for providing a balanced, well rounded approach to health by combining his knowledge of exercise programming with the biomechanical importance of chiropractic care. He is results oriented and has helped many at Shady Canyon achieve improvement on the golf course as well as relieve chronic or symptomatic pain. Steve offers personal training sessions, physiotherapy and trigger point therapy appointments as well as posture assessment. By using a digital force plate analysis of your stance he can customize spinal pelvic stabilizers to improve your balance and improve your golf game. Dr. Steve Hutchins

Six Ladies traveled away to Western Hills and Eight Ladies stayed behind to play at Shady Canyon. On the second hole, Robin Puckett and Nicole Ronald beat their opponents which gave Shady Canyon Golf Club the victory. The team headed into the second round of the playoffs against Los Coyotes on Thursday, June 25th. With a valient effort they were liminated from the playoffs, losing 5 1/2 to 1 1/2. If you see any of the Ladies, please take a moment to congratulate them on their achievement

Audubon 101

By: Steve Zarate, Member & Avid Golfer

S

hady Canyon Golf Club has been certified as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Golf Course since 2003. It is an award winning education and certification program that helps golf courses protect their environment and preserve the natural heritage of the game of golf. This serves as a vital resource for golf courses by helping to enhance the valuable natural areas and wildlife habitats. Through this program Shady Canyon improves efficiency, and minimize potentially harmful impacts to golf operations. It is the goal of the Club to keep the Membership informed of the additional beauty and benefits the course offers. One of the obvious benefits are the many species of wildlife you see around the course. In this issue Mr. Steve Zarate has contributed an article to introduce you to one of our resident Ruddy Ducks which can be seen on our lake off hole #2. The Ruddy Duck is a small and compact diving duck with a large head, a long spiky tail that is often raised, and a large flat bill. The Ruddy is migratory but can be found year-round here and can often be seen off the secondhole pond. This beautiful specimen is a male in colorful breeding plumage--ruddy brown body, contrasting dark cap and white cheeks, and a striking SKY BLUE bill! During the non-breeding season he would show non-distinct grey brown tones all over, including his bill. Being a diving duck, the Ruddy has relatively small wings but large feet set back on their body. They are great swimmers but are awkward on land and therefore spend most of their time in the water. They are strong fliers but their small wings require them to have a lot of runway to get off the water; so you may see one flapping like crazy and running across the top of the water until they get lift. Ruddy ducks dive to feed on pondweeds and algae, seeds of grasses and aquatic insects and their larvae. The Ruddy has the unusual ability to slowly sink out of sight when it feels threatened, although more often it would just dive or head to hide in shoreline reeds. I hope you have the opportunity to check out our blue billed friend soon. friend next time you are out on the course.

Agronomy

A What Meter? By: David Major, Director of Ag Agronomy

T

he stimpmeter was invented years ago by an avid golfer named Edward Stimpson. The device was intended to give the superintendent a tool to measure the consistency of the greens throughout the course. Unfortunately, the tool is often misused to compare the speed of greens from one course to another and by setting a dangerous benchmark for daily green speed. During one of Tom Fazio’s visits he stated that our greens should be maintained between 9.5 to 10.5 feet. These numbers represent the averaged distance of three golf balls that are rolled o the stimpmeter. It can be damaging to the health of greens to maintain excessive speeds for a long period of time. To be able to speed up the greens we typically roll them with a heavy machine that increases the speed approximately 1 foot. This is usually done Tuesday, Thursday and

Saturday mornings. If you enjoy putting on fast greens, this is the time to experience it. In contrast, during a Sunday afternoon you can expect the greens to putt slower. The time of year also plays a role in green speed. Being a cool season grass, our greens are their healthiest during the fall and especially the spring time of the year. During these times it should be expected to have them growing faster which results in potentially slower green speeds. These conditions are monitored by weighing daily grass clippings from select greens to compare with our weekly light fertility program. We also use plant growth regulator products to help control the growth of the plant. These measures coupled with our cultural practices that are performed on

Mondays give the greens the best chance to survive during the stressful summer months when the cool season grasses experience a shortening of their roots and a reduced ability to manufacture enough food for survival if we mow them too low. This is why we will raise the mowing height in the heat of the summer. It is very important to give our bent grass greens an advantage over Poa annua. It has always been my goal to keep the greens poa free as long as possible. By lowering the greens down to achieve a higher number on a stimpmeter would be very counterproductive to the longevity of our A-4 Bent grass greens. Our goal at Shady Canyon Golf Club is to give you fast and healthy greens with the emphasis on healthy.

Charles Kavanaugh

Marie Gray

The 2009 Men’s Gross Stroke Play Club Championship came to a close with Charles Kavanaugh winning the title on Sunday, June 21st. This was an exciting event with multiple lead changes and it also took place over three days. After the first round, Eoin Middaugh led the event by two shots over Charles Kavanaugh. After the second round, Charles had caught Eoin and lead by four shots. After the third round (54 holes), Charles had scored a three day total of 222 which was good enough to win the event by two strokes. Eoin was a close second with a three day total of 224. Charles Kavanaugh now holds both Gross Club Championship Perpetual Trophies as earlier this year he won the Men’s Gross Match Play Club Championship.

The 2009 Ladies’ Gross Stroke Play Club Championship was won with two consistent low rounds by Marie Gray on Wednesday, May 20th. On the opening day she shot an impressive 79 to become the first round leader. She closed by shooting the low score for the second day of 81 bringing her two day total to 160.

Tony Brown

Lou Miramontes

The 2009 Men’s Net Stroke Play Club Championship came to a close Sunday, June 7th.

The 2009 Men’s Gross Senior Stroke Play Championship came to a conclusion and Lou Miramontes was crowned the Champion on Sunday, May 17th. Having shot an opening round of 79, Lou found himself six shots back from the first round leader, Gary Voorhest. Lou realized that if he were to have any chance of winning, he would have to post a really low score in the final round. He did just that by shooting a three under par – 68 which gave him the winning score of 147.

The tournament wasn’t decided until the last group completed their round. On the final day Tony Brown shot a Net 64 to give him a winning two day total of Net 134. His total score also became the lowest Net score shot in this tournament since its conception in 2002. The previous lowest Net score was 135.

Her name will now adorn the Perpetual Trophy and Perpetual Panel along with her predecessors Pat Kopp, Nicole Ronald and Robyn Puckett.

Eoin Middaugh & Charles Kavanaugh The Men’s Gross Match Play Championship came to a conclusion with Charles Kavanaugh defeating Eoin Middaugh in the final match.

Bill Bullock The 2009 Men’s Net Senior Stroke Play Championship also came to a conclusion with Bill Bullock being crowned the Champion. Having shot an opening round of 69, Bill was definitely in the hunt for the title. He closed the tournament by shooting a final round of 67 which gave him the winning score of 136 on Sunday, May 17.

The match could not have been more exciting as Charles Kavanaugh was 6 holes up after the first round. On the second round, Eoin Middaugh battled back and after 35 holes he was only one back. They tied the 36th hole which gave Charles Kavanaugh the title.

Jay Yoon

Ed Blachford & Brad Dinsmore

The 2009 Ladies’ Net Stroke Play Club Championship began with Jay Yoon taking an impressive four stroke lead over the field with a net 66. She held onto her lead the second day by shooting a net 72 for a total of 138. Congratulations on her win on Wednesday, May 20th.

On Monday, May 25th Ed Blatchford beat Brad Dinsmore by a score of 3 and 2 in the Final of the Men’s Net Match Play Club Championship. This is one of the most difficult Trophies to win and by winning all seven matches, Ed was the victor. This event covers three months, starting in February and we would like to thank all the Members that took part.
