JULY 2017
THE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE — Steve Callaway, President Happy Fourth of July! This month is the height of our summer season. The pool will be filled with excited kids. Come up on a Thursday night and enjoy dinner by the pool. It is an awesome experience. Parents, please remember to keep an eye on your children. Tragedy was averted in June when one of our alert life guards pulled a struggling child from the deep end. Please respect the life guards, help them do their jobs, and follow the rules for pool safety. The course is looking and playing great. In July, we host our Men’s MemberMember Tournament. Known as the Clandestine, this is a great event and builds club camaraderie. The dates are July 21 – 22. The entire course will be used for the tournament. Contact the Pro Shop prior to coming out for golf on those days. Speaking of the course, in July, we celebrate Terry Grasso and his significant contribution to our club and wonderful course. Terry has dedicated nearly 20 years of his professional career to Sequoyah. He built a wonderful crew and leaves knowing his crew and course are in the capable hands of right-hand man, Harry Singh, and Terry’s handpicked successor, Armando Sanchez who officially starts on July 1. That’s right, these guys even work Saturdays. The fitness facility equipment is installed and ready to use. We are still working on the permits for the remainder of the work. It’s estimated we have one more week of work upstairs. Then
we will begin downstairs to create our Members’ Only area. In the meantime, enjoy the new large screen TV in the Terrace Bar while Pastor or Michael makes your favorite beverage. New service buttons are on the poolside dining tables. When pressed, servers are alerted to what table is requesting ser-
vice. This is an experiment we hope assists our servers to provide you top level service. The multi-room layout of our facility makes it difficult for the servers to see all possible tables where members may be sitting. Come out and enjoy your Club.
PRO SHOP NEWS — By Brandon Huneke, PGA Professional Registration for the 2018 Mexico trip should open during the first week of July. Be on the lookout for an email regarding trip destination, dates and cost. For those of you who are new to the Club, I take a group of members to Mexico every February. The all-inclusive trip is typically 8 days / 7 nights and includes a few days of golf for approximately $1800-$2100 per person. If you
want to know more about trip details and hear about previous trips, stop by my office for a chat.

EMPLOYEE APPRECIATION DAY! Every year, we acknowledge the staff in August with an “Employee Appreciation Day” of swimming, golf and a barbecue for the employees’ entire family. This day is to recognize the staff for all their services and dedication to the Club and its members. This year, our Employee Appreciation Day will be held on Monday, August 14th from 2:00 – 7:00 pm. This day includes a delicious BBQ, face painting, photo booth, jumpy house and music for all the employees to enjoy. A raffle is also held at the event where members and vendors donate prizes. Over the past years, the membership has generously donated raffle prizes so much that each employee was guaranteed a wonderful prize. Let’s keep this tradition alive for our employees. We would be grateful for any donations of prizes from you or your company for this recognition event. Any item at all (e.g. sports tickets, gift cards, gift certificates, cash, etc...) would be graciously accepted. It is a nice family day, and your assistance in recognizing the dedication of the team at your club would be appreciated.
WOMEN’S GOLF — Emily Gorin, Captain If a June night could talk, it would boast it invented romance. And to build on that quote, if a June day could ask, it would request to be filled with golf at Sequoyah. Such is the perfection that is June! Here is how many of us enjoyed various June days:

NINER NEWS — Molly Natsues, Secretary It’s great to win, but it’s also great fun to be in the thick of any truly well and hard fought contest against opponents you respect, whatever the outcome. — Jack Nicklaus Although Jack Nicklaus wasn’t talking about us directly, he certainly hit the nail on the head when we compare his quote to our Team Play results so far! After five straight weeks of Team Play, we get a month’s break before the final round July 20th at Marin to decide the division champions. SENIOR NEWS — Mike Erickson No June swoon for the Sequoyah Seniors as we had two home events and one away event. We went from the wind swept hills of Mira Vista (aka Berkeley Country Club) to the toasty trip to Blackhawk and a warm home event with Green Valley. As you may note, there are some recurring winners regularly making the prize list, but more on that next month. July 6th will be our Senior Invitational and there is still room. Please sign up and support this fun event. We then have three away events with Rossmoor, Marin and Crow Canyon to round out another full month. However, August finds us hosting two events and traveling to three away events. We appreciate the efforts of our Senior Committee and all the participation of our Seniors.

After dominating the first day (team alternate shot match play), the Blue Team had 21½ points to the Red Team’s 2½ points. The Red Team did not fare any better after Day 2’s better ball matches. The Blue team took 15 of the 24 possible points extending their lead to 36½ to 11½. The format for the final day was Individual Match Play generating a total of 48 possible points. Captain Al Longfield and the Red Team were ready to fight for the win! Unfortunately, the deficit was too great. Congratulations to the Rookie — Stuart Eberstein and his Blue team for defeating three-time defending Captain, Al Longfield and his Red Team! When all was said and done, the Blue Team came out on top with 62 points against Red’s 34 points.

Guest Day, June 27 Cool morning fog gently floated in the air, like ghosts of golfers past, as our friends gathered for Guest Day — hair perhaps a bit curlier thanks to said fog. By the afternoon, the sun was out and so were the stories of the day’s great shots: Yoshie Masuda scored 74 with four birdies — this ties her best score at Sequoyah! Elisabeth Fredricsson had a drive like a Maserati on hole number 14, and then chipped-in for an Eagle! Way to go ladies!
Unlimited Use Guests pay a guest fee to ride Commitment of 12 months; renewable annually. A golf cart trail fee includes use of a push cart; ride 9/walk 9 is an option. Can begin the program on the 1st of any month by signing up in the Pro Shop.

GOLF ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE — Marc Cunningham Sequoyah members — did you know the Golf Activities Committee (GAC) is the advisory body to the Board of Directors on all matters pertaining to golf activities? This includes the Pro Shop and operations of the golf club professional; golf carts; and storage facilities for golf bags and carts. You are welcome to attend and participate in our monthly meetings typically held the 4th Thursday of each month. To date, your GAC has reviewed and revised outside tournament fees and schedule, implemented a trail fee for monthly
golf cart use; promulgated QAQC procedures for the Pro Shop; and completed the measuring and rating of the forward tees. We have a lot on our agenda to complete this year including the Pro Shop’s operations manual, and policy & procedures for club members using the golf course. We welcome your input and insight during our lively monthly meetings that typically run 60 minutes or so. Really be a part of Sequoyah by joining the GAC. Contact Head Pro Brandon Huneke to express your interest.

This level of new member activity has not been seen in the club in decades, and would not be possible without the 25 members who were actively involved in this process. Just think, what if we had another 50 members become involved in referring their friends and associates. The golf course is in superb condition, the Fitness Center is open and we have very popular Individual Golf and Summer Social Memberships. Those are some very good talking points. I’m here to help you populate the club with all of your friends, associates and relatives. Contact me at membership@sequoyahcc.com or 510-817-2690.
