FROM THE COMMODORE commodore@sfyc.org

Moving Forward on Capital Projects am proud to acknowledge the hard work, time and attention dedicated to our capital projects. As reported at the April 14 member meeting; the Facilities Planning, Finance, and Strategic Investment & Funding Committees have been working on the proposed Regatta Center, surrounding improvements, and the prudent funding of this project. These changes are necessary to enhance member value now and to support our world-class programs into the future. The work on our dry storage dock is being completed to ensure the safety and sustainability of this essential part of our harbor facilities. Please see the updates on these projects in this edition of The Bulletin as well as updates on the website and in the Bow Wave.

I

SFYC Commitment to Yachting As I reviewed the draft of this edition of The Bulletin, a consistent theme is the commitment of SFYC members and programs to yachting. On the racing scene, how about the results of the 2015 San Francisco Cup? It was very exciting for all to witness the huge success of Team SFYC. It was so humbling for me to have the honor of delivering this coveted trophy back to The SFYC. Also on the match racing front, skipper Shawn Bennett and his team will challenge the Long Beach Yacht Club on June 6 to return the San Francisco Perpetual Cup (the second oldest trophy in all of US sailing) back to our Club. This month, we are hosting the 8th annual Great San Francisco Schooner Race. This has become a signature event for The SFYC. Even the Auxiliary is elevating their interest in racing with the addition of The Auxiliary Cup. It was great to see so many Staff Commodores competing in the Staff Commodores’ Cup dedicated to these legends. It is also rewarding to see more members racing in the highly competitive Club Series. And, our youth sailors continue to achieve success on San Francisco Bay and around the country. The Wednesday Night Match Racing and Thursday Night Women Racing Programs are well-attended evidencing the desire of our members to become more proficient in handling small boats and to avoid the mid-week doldrums. Our Race Management Program continues to excel as do our members racing on the Bay and afar. Additions to The SFYC's Distinguished Sailor Plaque, displayed in the clubhouse lobby, include John Kilroy who won the 2014 Melges 20 North American and World Championships, Jim Cunningham who won the 2014 Etchells National Championship, and Jim Coggan who has logged 20,000+ nautical miles of short-handed South Pacific passages from 2007 through 2014. Please see Race News for recent racing achievement of our members. When not racing, how about cruising with fellow members? Our Cruise Committee has added some new fun events to the schedule and has been eagerly seeking to expand participation, including members that do not have a boat. Save the Date: August 1 Entertainment Committee members Mimi Blakeslee, Stephanie Stroub and Stephanie Portillo are working on The SFYC’s Committee Chili Challenge. Join us to savor the culinary talents of The SFYC’s Committees and to vote for Members’ Favorite! Special thanks to P/P Mimi Cornelius who has retired from years as a valued editor of The Bulletin. We will miss you Mimi! SFYC rocks!

HE 2015 AUXILIARY RAFFLE was kicked off on Opening Day. Recently, with the help from V/C Ed Lynch, the Auxiliary purchased a defibrillator for the Race Committee to be used on the water in case of an emergency. Your support for the Auxiliary Raffle also continues to benefit Youth Sailing with new mast floats purchased to keep the little ones from turtling during sailing lessons. This year you can choose from (3) Grand Raffle items: a $3250 BESV Electric Bike, a $3240 Diamond Necklace or a $2500 Shopping Spree at Helen Lyall's Boutique in Napa. The drawing will be held at the Auxiliary Fundraiser Luncheon on September 24. Tickets ($20 each or 6/$100) can be purchased from any Auxiliary Board member or through the Front Office. Thank you for your generous support! THE AUXILIARY CUP REGATTA is coming October 25! Proposed Regatta Center Update: n April 14, 2015; The SFYC Board of Directors hosted the 5th meeting to update the membership on the current status of the proposed Regatta Center and surrounding improvements. The architects, David Ross & George Jansen of Bull Stockwell Allen, presented the initial schematic design to the audience of 220+ members and spouses. Following the presentation, was a period of questions and member comments, which were very positive and supportive of the direction of the project. Several members urged the Board to continuing moving forward. While the Facilities Planning Committee is working on the detail of the project; the Finance Committee, the Board and the newly created Strategic Investment & Funding Committee are working on the options available for funding the project. The next steps will involve outreach to the City of Belvedere and our neighbors while the plans are being prepared for a City of Belvedere Planning submittal. We have a long way to go and your support is greatly appreciated. The Flag Officers and Board of Directors will be planning the next meeting in order to keep members informed of the process and project status. The proposed schematic renderings with a current project status will also be posted on the SFYC website and in the front entry area of the club. Please direct any questions or comments you may have to the Facilities Planning Committee or email us at vicecommodore@sfyc.org.

Supporting joists and blocking covered with waterproof plastic membrane.

Dry Dock Project e are finally off and running with the project to strengthen the dry storage docks and replace their rough and uneven surface. The existing pressure-treated surface planks will be removed and will be recycled. In addition, new strengthening posts are being installed below the decks. The upper surfaces of all joists and blocks are being protected with a waterproof plastic membrane. This will greatly increase the life of the wood. Finally, smooth and durable hardwood surface

W

planks are being installed. Work started at the Youth Sailing end of the dock, and will finish with the docks nearest the Lawn. The removal of the old grey dock boxes provides more dock surface for both Club and Youth vessels. This project has been under consideration for several years by the Harbor Committee as time has continued to degrade the heavily used docks. However, because we wanted this major project to blend in appearance and function with the new Regatta Center – earlier, only a concept – we put the dock project aside until there was more detail on the proposed location and design of

the Regatta Center. We can now be sure that the new docks will integrate nicely with this project should it become a reality. And yes, there will be disruption as portions of the dock are closed off and boats are shifted around as the project proceeds. Please bear with us during the work. The results will be worth the wait. As mentioned in an earlier Bow Wave note, if you have children at the Club, please remind them not to walk or climb through the work site. Protruding metal, unsecured planks, rough wood, deep mud below, and exposed wiring make the area very hazardous for kids, as well as for curious adults.

he 2015 SFYC Club Championship Series got off to a very dull start on March 14 when the Rosenblum was shutout with no wind. In the Non-Spinnaker Division Jib Martens on Freedom with S/C Bob Griswold aboard took 1st and Glenn Isaacson on Q with S/C John Swain aboard took a close 2nd. 2015 Double-handed Farallon Class Win by the Smallest Boat ichard vonEhrenkrook and crew Paul Sutchek have lots of offshore racing experience off the Bay Area, so a division win the Double-handed Farallon Race on March 28 was not too much of a surprise. What may be surprising though is that the duo logs all of these ocean miles and numerous division wins aboard by far the smallest and slowest boat in the fleet. The Cal 20 rates 273, almost twice the PHRF rating of most of the other boats in her division. Nevertheless, the Can ‘O Whoopass managed to correct out on top of her division by over 13 minutes after almost ten-and-a-half hours of sailing. In the age of the “selfie” nothing else quite shows the scale of this little boat out on the big open ocean. Paul described huge waves bouncing the little 20-footer all over the place, and that the picture doesn’t do the sea state justice.

TUGBOATS! Presented by Shawn Bennett

T

he yellow and black tugs we see towing commercial traffic in and out of SF Bay and its tributaries are run by Baydelta Maritime. SFYC Member Shawn Bennett, who many sailors know for his top-notch match racing skills, owns and manages the company.

Shawn will uncover the goings-on of a working waterfront, the ships the company serves and the capabilities of their best in class tugboats. For those of us who have always wanted to know more about the tugs we see around the Bay, this event is a must!

Please R.S.V.P. to The SFYC Front Office 415 435 9133 ext. 10 office@sfyc.org or for your convenience go to www.sfyc.org These events are free for Members and their guests.
