The San Francisco Yacht Club

FROM THE COMMODORE commodore@sfyc.org

he Club has been buzzing with activity on all (water) fronts – from regattas and cruise outs, to all of the fun support activities that go along with boating. The recent US Opti Team Trials really drove home how proud I am of our Club and the can-do attitude and dedication of our incredible volunteers and staff. Together, they stepped up to the plate and pulled off an incredible event with ~230 of the nation’s best young sailors racing over a four-day period. When The SFYC last hosted this event in 2011, there were 140 participants, plus support boats, coaches and parents – so in five short years, the event almost doubled in size. The complexity of running an event like this is huge, and our great staff – under the leadership of Forrest Gay – did a fantastic job pulling it together and making it a memorable experience for all. Special congratulations to SFYC member, Will Foox, for placing 19th overall and receiving an invitation to join the National Opti Team.

T

Speaking of creating memorable experiences, the 2016 Commodore’s Cruise is on and it’s not too late to sign up. It is going to be a really fun event with some great activities. If you’d like to participate, but don’t have a boat or crew, consider flying up and joining us at the resorts where we’ll be staying. Be sure to register soon so you can get in on the cruise swag. Onshore, the Regatta Center Project continues to evolve and work its way through the approval process. On May 17, The SFYC presented the proposed project to the Belvedere Planning Commission for a non-binding review and to solicit feedback from the Planning Commission and the public. It was a valuable exercise and we’re working to identify changes we might make that meet the needs of The Club and the community. The SFYC will hold a special member meeting at 6:00 p.m., on June 21 to review the status of the project, including cost estimates and any plan revisions being considered. Stay tuned for more on this! With summer right around the corner, activities around The Club are really starting to heat up, so be sure to check the calendar. If you want to race, cruise, fish, paddleboard or just get on the water, it’s all here. If you want to hear great speakers or relax on the deck with one of Phil or Rey’s famous cocktails, you can do that too. Heck, why not do it all? Have fun and be safe! Commodore Ed

Ed Lynch, Commodore The San Francisco Yacht Club

Members’ Meeting Tuesday, June 21, 2016 6:00 p.m.

Please plan to join the Commodore, Flag Officers and Committee Chairs for our Summer Members’ Meeting. The agenda will include: An update and member input on the proposed Cove House Replacement (Regatta Center) Project. As always, these meetings are an excellent chance for members to provide valuable feedback to the Board. The Bar will open after the meeting. MEMBERS AND SPOUSES MOST WELCOME. Hope to see you there!

AUXILIARY

Stephanie Stroub, President

Let the Sailing Begin! he kick off to the season was definitely a kick - from water balloon fights on the water, to the Club packed with Opening Day revelers and Chef Reny’s great barbeque on shore! It was also the launch of the Auxiliary’s annual fundraising efforts where proceeds help fund Junior Sailing and Clubhouse improvements. We have three amazing raffle prizes this year, with something for everyone: an electric cruiser bike, a paddleboard and a Helen Lyall shopping spree. Big thanks to everyone who’s already purchased tickets and to the Auxiliary members who helped sell them. During Friday night cocktail hours this summer, there will be more opportunities to purchase tickets at the sales table in the bar. You can't win it unless you’re in it, so please dive in to support youth sailing and The Club and increase your chance to win! Your donations truly make a difference. In fact, thanks to proceeds from 2012-2016 Auxiliary Board fundraising efforts, we’re proud to pledge $10,000 towards The SFYC Junior Sailing Coach Boat to support the development

of up-and-coming sailors. We can’t wait to see you out on the water! If you were wondering what all the laughter coming out of the Commodore’s Room one Friday afternoon was about– well, that would be the Past Presidents’ Tea. It was so much fun getting caught up and hearing about the tales and accomplishments of past Auxiliary Presidents. We all have a lot to learn from these extraordinarily accomplished women! Thank you to all who joined us, including Commodore Ed Lynch. The Mother Son Dance, co-chaired by Kim Lynch and Barb McCrumb, was so fun. Special thanks to Lynn Spiller for her contributions. Lots of boys and moms enjoyed this pre-Mother's Day event together. DJ Max and the Purple Monkey photo both made for a very memorable night. With a son heading to college in a year, I know I won’t forget the wonderful time we had together.

The great news is, from an Auxiliary events standpoint, the festivities are just getting started! The exciting line up for the rest of year includes: • The Dreamboat Series • The Auxiliary Cup Regatta • Halloween • Holiday Club Decorating • Family Santa Brunch • Get Lit Harbor Lighting • The Christmas Gala Speaking of the Auxiliary Cup Regatta, the Club Series and CYC beer can races are a great way to dial in your skills and crew work in preparation for that race. Contact Paige Brooks if you have questions or would like more information about the race. One of the special things that makes our club unique is the collective contributions from our energetic and talented members. So, as always, if you’d like to get involved in any Club events please contact any of the Auxiliary members. Yours in sailing,

CRUISE NEWS

Jib Martens, Cruise Committee Chair jibmartens@comcast.net

SFYC Cruising: Come Join Us he 2016 Cruising Season is in full swing, and we encourage you to come enjoy the camaraderie on the water with us! We’re kicking off the month with our Angel Island Picnic on Saturday, June 4. Then we’re headed to the city front for our NEW St. Francis YC/City Fun Cruise, June 1719. Next month, we’re getting a flotilla together to watch the July 4th fireworks. From there, we’re heading northeast for our Annual Delta Yacht Club Cruise on July 18-22. And don’t forget, our Sunset Cruises on the second Friday of every month are a great way to unwind after a busy week! Back in April, Herb Potter led a wonderful cruise to Petaluma. Seven boats made the scenic river journey and several land yachts traversed the black top to join us. Friday night featured spirited Docktails followed by sumptuous meals at Petaluma’s wonderful restaurants. Saturday, more than 40 of us enjoyed a wonderful dinner at the warm and welcoming Petaluma YC, prepared by our own Chef Reny and his family. Several folks continued the party, venturing out for live music afterward. Sunday morning, the fleet left early to catch the favorable tides and be back at The SFYC before noon. If anyone wants to see pictures from the Petaluma Cruise, please email me and I will send you the link to our Dropbox gallery. There’s more fun to be had. So, if you’re not on our SFYC Cruisers email list, please let us know so we can keep you current on all of our upcoming events. See you on the water!

ith the start of the Anniversary Cup on April 23, the 2016 Club Championship Series is underway. This year, both the Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker Divisions were divided into two fleets, with four winners in each race. S/C Bill Melbostad and Vito Bialla (JR) and Brent Crawford (Fifty/Fifty) took top honors in the Spinnaker Division, while Jib Martens (Freedom) and Richard and Mark Pearce (Bolero) won Non-Spinnaker. We’re grateful to sponsors Dry Creek Vineyard, Martin Ray Winery, and Whole Foods Market for generously providing food and wine on Club Series race days.

he SFYC Race Committee is very grateful to the village of volunteers who make our 30+ regattas possible, each and every year. Participating in Race Committee is a great way to get involved, meet other club members and give folks who might be interested in membership an entrée to The Club. In 2015, we had more than 120 individuals volunteer for our race program. Volunteers run the Signal Boat Victory and one or two of our support boats (depending on the regatta), in addition to staffing shoreside positions in registration and

protest committees. At major events, like the recent Opti Team Trials, we’ve had upwards of 50 volunteers on the water and 20 on land, each day. To thank our volunteers and recruit new ones, the Race Committee is hosting a party on July 10, from 4:00-6:00 p.m., on the Corinthian deck. The event is open to all. If you've already been a volunteer, consider bringing a friend who might be interested in future Race Committee fun. We look forward to sharing information about our race program, answering questions and enlisting new volunteers to join us on the water!

2016 USODA Team Trials

he SFYC was proud to host this annual regatta, which serves as the qualifier for the US National Optimist Team and determines who will represent the US at the World Championship and other international regattas. For nine days, ~230 Optis, support boats, racers and parents were onsite, so it was a logistical feat. Thanks to careful planning and hard work of the SYFC team and a dedicated group of volunteers, we rose to the challenge and ran a great regatta. The fleet enjoyed moderate conditions throughout the week, with eight-to-23 knots of breeze. The competition was stiff, with races that sometimes had 70+ boats crossing the finish line at the same time. The SFYC had 10 sailors qualify to

race in the regatta. Ultimately our top male finisher was Will Foox, who came in 19th and earned a spot on the US National team. Sarah Young, SFYC’s top female racer, finished 113th. PRO Bill Stump from Los Angeles led the 46-person volunteer team on the water. SFYC's Forrest Gay assisted the PRO and led the on-the-water check-out system. Event Co-chairs Carol Holder and Shar Foox rallied an extensive onshore team as well, with great assistance from Justine O’Connor and Lisa Turner. Congratulations to the SFYC sailors, our volunteers and The SFYC staff for making our largest racing event to date such a resounding success!
