Well, this will be a good ole summertime of memories for many Meridian Hills members who have been using the club extensively throughout the spring as good weather has blessed our fair neighborhood. Now, with summer about to bloom, I hope you’ll join us at our club to create your own memories of a splendid summer.

Jack M. Woodside Many thanks to the Social Committee for its planning Club President and execution of our welcome back opening night party last month. We had 275 members turn out for what may become an annual social event. I enjoyed seeing many of you there and appreciate your kind comments about improvements we’re making to the club.

Our Mothers’ Day brunch was an outstanding success as we filled nearly every available space at the club. It is events such as these that remind us of the talents of Chef Joe and his team. I encourage you to show off these skills to your guests by bringing them to the club.

If you use our pool facilities, you’ll note the repainting of the deck with a more appropriate color and the repair and renovation of poolside furniture. Soon, we will be switching from paper order forms at the pool and halfway house to point of sale computers that will speed service to you and immediately post your purchases to your account.

Our many fitness fanatics will be pleased to learn that our fitness center soon will have new True treadmills with heart rate control and user friendly interaction along with new a chin/dip assist machine and a flat/incline bench. My thanks to the advisory committee for making these recommendations. To our golf fanatics, we have placed Laser Link yardage reflectors on the red hazard stakes on the tee side of the ponds on holes #4 & #9 for your convenience.

Summer Has Begun!

What an exciting time of year. The pool is open, tennis programs are in high gear, the golf course looks terrific and activity here at the club is steadily on the rise. This summer is packed full of exciting opportunities for you to spend time at Meridian Hills.

Hopefully most of you who utilize the pool have noticed Kevin O’Laughlin, CCM some of the positive changes that have taken place this Club Manager year. In addition to the aesthetic improvements that President Woodside spoke of, several improvements have been made to the locker rooms and Chef Miller and his staff have added some healthier options with various specials to the snack bar menu. Scott and his staff are geared up for a great year and we look forward to lots of fun at the pool.

At the time of this writing, plans are underway for our biggest event of the year, the Annual Fireworks Party on Friday, July 2, 2010. This is a great opportunity to round up the entire family along with friends and join us for a great evening of music, games activities, and of course the best fireworks display in town provided by Zambelli.

Membership Update Over the years, our club has attracted a terrific array of members. It wasn’t long ago when the club had an extensive waiting list. Times have changed and we need to remind ourselves that our club is private and in order to keep our dues low and the club successful, we need to keep membership on our minds. In order to be a member of Meridian Hills, candidates must know 4 to 6 current members of the club. That is just the first step of the process.

Having members introduce people to the club is our best way of attracting new members.

Thanks to all of the members who have sponsored a new member(s). The Membership Committee and I would like to note a few members who stand out for their efforts. Kevin and Alli Stitle have a genuine sincerity in having their friends, neighbors and business contacts join them at the club. Another couple who have actually set a record in sponsoring new members are Walter and Laura Freihofer. They have only been members for a year and a half and they have sponsored a new member and been invited as a sponsor to attend every New Member Reception since they joined. Thanks to the Stitle’s and Freihofer’s for their continued effort and time. Inviting friends to the club is every member’s privilege and responsibility as a member. I hope you’ll accept my challenge to help in membership recruitment and securing a bright future for our club.

Junior Chef’s Academy Come join me, Chef Miller, in the Meridian Hills kitchen to learn more about cooking. If you are between the ages of 10 - 14 years old, you can attend my academy for junior chef ’s. Due to many requests, in contrast to past Chef Academy’s, this class will be geared towards more advanced class content.

Fireworks Party

Friday, July 2nd 2010 ~ 6:00pm - 11:00pm This is the biggest event on our calendar for the entire year! For those of you new to Meridian Hills Country Club, you are in for a real treat with our annual Fireworks Party. Our attendance is usually around 1,700 with assigned seating for all of our members and their guests. Many members bring their entire family and all of their friends. We have seating available both inside the clubhouse and outside in various areas, such as on the terraces, the patios, and by the putting green.

We set up two big buffets with tons of great picnic food. We have a kiddie play area especially for the little ones with pony rides, face painters, clowns, inflatables, and so much more. There is also live music and, of course, FIREWORKS! With all these activities, there is definitely something for everyone. Call and reserve your table today!

Tennis Update All of the tennis events are now in full swing. Come join in with the Ladies teams, the Junior Tennis program, as well as the Ladies & Men’s Clinics. We hope to see you out on the courts for some fun tennis activities.

Ladies

We offered five member/guest clinics with lunch in May and these were all a great success.

Please stop by the racquet complex and check out other clinics and events we are offering. We would love to have you come out and participate in our ladies clinics. They are offered three days a week and are for all levels of play. On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday night, come out and watch our ladies play matches against other clubs. Private clinics are also available during most days if you want to set anything up with your friends. Last year, we had a mixed doubles event on Wednesday evenings.

Unfortunately, we now have matches and clinics during those times. We will now have to schedule these mixed double events on different Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday nights when matches are not in progress.

Men

Monday nights have always been a success for the men. All you have to do is show up, and we will pair you up in a match with players of similar ability. Please show up Wednesday nights to play in a mixed doubles clinic!

Private clinics for the men are also available if you want to set some up with your buddies. The Saturday morning clinics are a huge success, just a reminder to sign up by Thursday for these clinics.

Kids

We have over 150 junior players participating in the junior program this year. We have an excellent staff of six who are all available for lessons on Wednesday afternoons, Fridays and weekends.

Tennis Pro Shop

Please support the tennis pro shop as much as possible. Although we do not have a huge inventory, we can get almost anything you want within 24 hours. We have a large selection of racquets and shoes always that are in stock. Stringing is also available with a 24 hour turn around.

Tennis Update Meet your Tennis Pros Tim Brady is back for his 2nd year. Tim currently teaches at the Carmel Racquet Club.

He has been very involved in tennis since graduating from Ball State in 1984 and playing 2 years of varsity tennis. He has over 15 years of teaching experience in both juniors and adults. Tim continues to play in a USTA 5.0 Men’s league. He has participated in the 5.0 Nationals in 2001, 06, & 07.

Luke Robbins will be returning for his 6th summer on staff and his 3rd summer as the

Head Racquet Stringer for Meridian Hills. Luke was a member of the 2006 Park Tudor State Champion team and has played for Wabash College, where he will be starting his senior year in the fall. Luke is a member of the Professional Tennis Registry and is a certified PTR instructor.

Whitney Brown is new to MHCC Tennis this year, he has over 6 years experience

working as a tennis instructor at the Riviera Club. He has been working at the Carmel Racquet Club as a tennis instructor for the last 3 years. Whitney also works with the ladies CIWTL teams and with many juniors of all levels. He is really looking forward to joining the MHCC Tennis staff.

Kelly Fritz is also new to MHCC Tennis this year, she graduated from Arsenal Tech last year and is attending University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where she’s studying Physical Therapy. She won city while at Arsenal Tech and continues to play tennis at UW Milwaukee, where she is currently playing number 3 singles.

Gabrielle Rubenstein is also new to MHCC Tennis this year, she is currently a senior

at Brebeuf Jesuit. She won state in doubles last year, and every other year she has played #1 singles for the tennis team, and she also advanced in the state tournament her sophomore year. Gabrielle is ranked nationally in the 18 and under division as well as in the midwest.

Next year she will be attending Butler University on a tennis scholarship.

Junior Golf Update JUNIOR GOLF 2010!

The first day of Jr. Golf is set for Wednesday, June 2nd. It is never too late to sign up your children for this fun-filled, action packed program. The Professional Staff encourages every parent to get their children involved in this program, as it teaches the basic fundamentals and course etiquette in a FUN atmosphere that is proven to HOOK young juniors on the game If you have any questions regarding Jr. Golf, or would like your son or daughter to be included in this program, please call the golf shop to speak with Michael, Joe, or Megan.

Golf Update Men’s Skills Challenge Saturday, June 17th “Drive for Show, Putt for Dough.”

Hole-In-One Club The Hole-In-One Club is open to all male members and requires NO entry fee. If someone records an ace and is a member of the H-I-O Club, the recipient will receive $750 in golf shop credit, $150 in the Bar, a Laser Engraved Plaque, and a custom H-I-O Blazer with logo patch all compliments of the H-I-O Club! Any extra money will be used for prizes in the season ending H-I-O Golf Outing. All members of the H-I-O Club will not be charged until an ace is made. Golf Update COURSE ETIQUETTE We all enjoy playing on a well-kept course. By working together we can keep our course looking nice. Here are a few ways you can act as a good steward of the golf course: Always fix your ball mark.

Always replace your divot. Use the sand only when no divot is available and only in the fairway.

Always leave space between your divots when using the practice facility.

Always return your cart to the cart path when at all green and tee locations. The areas around the greens receive a lot of unnecessary wear from golf carts.

If you ever have a question about the course and how it’s maintained, please feel free to stop me on the course.
