A NOTE FROM THE CLUB MANAGER

The largest professional golf event in Texas is the HP Byron Nelson Championship set at TPC Four Seasons May 17-23. Celebrating its 43rd anniversary, the Dallas-based PGA TOUR event managed by the Salesmanship Club of Dallas and its 500 member volunteers looks to be as exciting as ever! A couple of this year’s highlights include a brand new web site that you are encouraged to visit to see all the latest news and updates from sponsors to player commitments and ticket packages. You can find it at www.hpbnc.org. One interesting note is that there has been no ticket price increases over last year. Also, due to the last year’s addition of more Sports Club villa rooms, there are Four Seasons room packages available for members and tournament guests who want to make a week or a weekend of the tournament. You can call Reservations at 972-717-2499 to learn details. The Pavilion After Dark remains one of the most popular social scenes during tournament week. Entertainment, including Emerald City and Le Freak, are already set for the stage that is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings of the tournament. Admittance is included in the price of any ticket. The popular Kids Zone will have some enhancements to keep the kids engaged and there will be an HP Technology Zone to visit that features the latest in combining HP expertise to golf technology. A special tribute to tournament namesake Byron Nelson will be housed at Champions Way. And, look for the introduction of a new book by Mrs. Peggy Nelson - “Life with Lord Byron” - to be available that week. Tournament proceeds support the Salesmanship Club of Dallas Youth and Family Counseling Center and the J. Erik Johnson Elementary School in Oak Cliff. Last year’s tournament contributed $4.15 million to the cause.

A

t our December “Year in Review” celebration for our Board and Committee members, we are excited to announce that Bob Swanson - “Swany” was awarded the prestigious Byron and Peggy Nelson Legacy Award. The award was initially conceived of eight years ago to acknowledge members who go far above the in their contributions to the Club and their service to fellow members while being respected by their fellow members and management for their efforts. Who better to have as a namesake for this award than Byron and Peggy whose mission was and is to always give of themselves. All who have received the award, the late John Coolidge, Joe Cleary and Robert Burns have shared the attributes of having a unique passion for the Club and their ability to connect with people, members and staff, to get things done and make a difference. Bob Swanson exemplifies these traits as well in his involvement over many years - MGA President, Golf Services Committee, Nelson Cup Committee, two Year Board of Governors chair through to today where he is sitting chair of the Handicap Committee. Like the others, he just can’t help himself to get involved and for that we area very thankful! Unbeknownst to Bob, his family joined the festivities during the presentation and it was emotional and heartwarming to see Bob accept this well deserved award from Peggy Nelson to the cheers of his fellow members and his family. If you see “Swany” around the Club be sure to congratulate him and thank him for his contribution to our club!

I

t’s certainly an honor to be the new Chairman of the Board. My wife Sherri and I joined the club over 20 years ago, yet we still get a huge thrill out of bringing a guest to the club for the first time. Inevitably, they’re blown away by the facilities, but the Sports Club staff is the finest feature of our club, and we are all the beneficiaries. Congratulations go out to Bob Swanson, recent Byron and Peggy Nelson Legacy Award winner, who initially suggested I become involved in the committee process. I’m continually amazed at how responsive the club is to the operating committees of Golf Services, Green, Tennis, Fitness, and Social, Food, and Beverage. The Board of Governors and the respective committees are the sounding board for the membership, and we strive to live up to your expectations. This is due, in large part, to the management teams led by Rob Cowan, Paul Earnest, and Robin Scott, as they truly take our role seriously as advisory groups. We are fortunate to have the most experienced Board the club has ever assembled in 2010. Of the nine voting members, five were Chairman of their respective committees, and four have had multiple tenures on the Board—truly extraordinary! Your 2010 Board of Governors: Rick Mills, Bob Sander, Larry Crowley, Dina Schulz, Marsha Tokerud, Robin Sims, and Bob and Kate Shema (the power couple!) Our goal is always to serve the membership and make our club a world-class experience.

Package includes:

Four nights in an Ocean View Casita at Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita (Complimentary upgrade to a suite, based on availability) Round trip tickets for two from Dallas Round trip airport transfers Unlimited golf at the 9 hole rate - $135per person/per day The new member will receive their choice of: The complimentary trip to Four Seasons Punta Mita and $5,000 in membership credit OR $10,000 in membership credit Promotion is valid March 1 - June 30, 2010. Applies to new golf memberships paid in full. To refer a new member or inquire about Sports Club membership, please contact Amy Crowell at 972-717-2520 or Amy.Crowell@fourseasons.com.

Finally, I don’t think the Committees and Board have ever been in healthier shape because of the leadership of outgoing Chairman Rocco Macri. Replacing Rocco brings to mind one of my favorite Thomas Jefferson quotes, when Jefferson was asked about following Benjamin Franklin as Ambassador to France. Jefferson aptly replied, “I succeed him. No one could replace him.” Sincerely yours, Larry LeVan Chairman of the Board of Governors 3

GOLF NEWS PERFECT YOUR SETUP TO IMPROVE YOUR SWING By Tim Cusick, Director of Golf Instruction

This posture won’t allow for a good pivot and having the body aimed too far right makes it difficult to make a correct takeaway.

C

reating the proper setup is important for a number of reasons. For one, it’s an area in golf swing you can be perfect every time. If you have mistakes in your setup you have to compensate in your swing to adjust. Getting all your body parts to be aligned is a key element in having a proper setup. Additionally, you’d like to have your weight toward the “balls” of your feet as well as your back relatively flat and aligned with your neck. The mistake I often see is that the body parts are aligned to the right, the weight is back on the heels and the back is too rounded. This type of setup leads to a poor turn and the club going too far to the inside on the takeaway.

Starting with no mistakes. Weight is forward and the body parts match up.

Make your setup mistake free to give yourself a greater opportunity to make a proper swing.

TAKE THE 2010 CHALLENGE By Paul Earnest, Director of Golf

A

s the warm weather approaches, the grass begins to awaken, and the birds start singing, it is time for many of us to hit the links more often. Like a New Year’s Resolution, I invite you to take my 2010 Challenge of improving your game by 20%. The measurement criterion is your handicap index. Simply, if you are a 10.0 handicap index, make it to your goal to be a sustainable 8.0 handicap index at the end of the year. In other words, let’s drop the handicap crutch and get you on your way to better golf. Here are some steps that you should consider in such a challenge: Honestly Evaluate Your Game. This was the first quote from our dear friend, Byron Nelson, on his keys to improvement. As golfers, we tend to ignore the things that need fixing and we practice the things that we like to do or are good at. Be honest with yourself and set a clear path to improve your worst skills. Take Instruction. We have six PGA Members on staff eager to make an impact on your golf game. Make one of us a part of the solution. Share your goals and we will help keep you on the path to be successful with this challenge. Manage the Golf Course. Golf is a game of strategy. Think ahead and about where you want to be on holes. Learn the percentages for each shot and improve your scores.

Get Fit. Whether you need more strength or more flexibility, both will benefit your game. Utilize the comprehensive offerings at the club to help you achieve the results. We have two Titleist Performance Institute certified staff members on property. Consider making your workout regimen tailored to your golf goals. Get Equipment That Fits You. As your body changes, so do the needs of the equipment to help you hit better shots. Whether talking balls or clubs, the technology over the past decade has done more for making it “personal” than in any other time in history. Get the right equipment for you and learn how to play your best. Hit the Best Shot You Can Each Time You Try. Repeat. If we are honest with ourselves, it is remarkable how many careless shots that we play when our mind is on everything but that shot. Or, we are so emotionally bothered by the previous shot (or hole) that we don’t allow ourselves a chance for success. Commit to not playing careless shots in 2010 and to simply try your best. Again, this is one of just two strategies Byron Nelson applied to himself prior to his 1945 streak of 11 straight wins. In closing, it is remarkable to me how simple this goal would be to achieve if we just put some of these suggestions into action and abandoned “the crutch” called a USGA handicap. If you want to accept the challenge, I invite you to email me at paul. earnest@fourseasons.com. I want to be a part of holding you accountable to your goal. I will have a special award for all of those members who achieve a 20% improvement in their game this year.

FROM GREEN TO BROWN... AND BACK AGAIN

By John Cunningham, Director of Golf Course Operations

A

ll types of Bermuda grass turn a tan color and become dormant when temperatures are consistently below 55 degrees. Our playing surfaces here are Bermuda grass, which is a warm season turf (except for our bentgrass greens) and during this transition time in the fall the plant begins to store sugars and carbohydrates, which are stored throughout the plant during the winter months. The plant goes into a hybernation as a protection. The plants energy reserve that was stored in the fall is used during the winter months for survival.

The green up and transition back to an actively growing plant begins when daytime ambient temperatures are consistently above 60 degrees and the soil temperature reaches 65 degrees in the root zone of the plant. Temperature, shade, soil moisture and cart traffic all are factors that effect transition in the spring. During the spring green up we will be fertilizing to provide adequate nutrition and reducing cart traffic to relieve stress on the plant as we ready our golf course for member and tournament play this spring.

TENNIS NEWS

TENNIS TIP

John Mullman, Director of Tennis Instruction

H

itting topspin is a very important part of controlling the point and playing high percentage tennis. Here are a few hints in making topspin a part of your game. First, make sure you drop the racquet head below the ball and hit through, finishing with the racquet around your shoulder. Second, make sure your hand is also below the ball at contact. Contact must also be out in from low to high. Third, one must accelerate when hitting up at the ball. This movement will bring control to your game, and will improve your margin for error giving you greater net clearance and depth.

HEALTH AND FITNESS EXERCISE = INSURANCE By Brian Morse, Personal Trainer

A

s members of a litigious society, we all realize the need to carry insurance. We do this for our medical health, homes, cars, etc. For most of us this insurance is necessary to minimize costs. Insurance for our flaw of excess food consumption is exercising. The largest part of our general public ignores exercise and continues spending money expanding their wardrobe the wrong direction. Exercise is the least expensive way for us to overcome our inabilities to maintain an optimal nutrition plan. Yet the majority of our population overlooks this very personal insurance opportunity. Exercise does an awesome job of eliminating our extra calories that we can easily consume. Exercise insures us against bone and muscle tissue loss, gives us extra energy and promotes increased strength. It also allows us to continue to do the activities we want to do as we age, reduces our stress and lastly improves our external appearance. As spring quickly turns to summer, evaluate your fitness portfolio and insure yourself with exercise. No matter what your goals in life are, exercising will guarantee you the best opportunity to reach those goals. If exercising was part of your lifestyle, remember to restart at a very slow and gradual pace. If exercise has never been a part of your lifestyle, please consider starting soon. The personal training team would love the opportunity to help you start or restart your path to fitness. We are one of the most experienced and talented fitness staff ever assembled at The Sports Club. Each trainer can navigate the most novice exerciser or challenge the most advanced. Allow one of us to assist in insuring your fitness lifestyle.
