Committees. This year we also hosted a presentation by Mr. Kurt Kuebler of the firm “Kopplin and Kuebler” the executive search firm that worked with our own selection committee to hire our new General Manager. Each year, Kurt and his partner visit about 200 clubs nationwide. Kurt is a recognized leader within the club industry and brought a wealth of information to us concerning “Trends in the Club Industry”. It was very gratifying to learn that with few exceptions your club is already employing the management tools consistently identified as best practices within our industry. Likewise our Board Governance Practices and our Management Organization are consistent with the trends in our industry for which we can thank our current Board but most importantly the many Boards which have governed our

with the Easter Bunny” on Saturday, March 30. This is always well attended so parents and grandparents make your reservations as soon as possible! Also, as always we will host our Easter Buffet on Easter Sunday, March 31st so don’t miss out on this as well. Last year we served more than 450 members and their guests so another reminder to make your reservations early. Our annual President’s Ball is set for Saturday evening the 20th of April. At Chartwell we celebrated our club’s fiftieth anniversary in 2011. Likewise, this year we decided to join in the celebration of another fiftieth anniversary-the classic James Bond, 007 film series. The first film in the series, “Dr. No” was released in 1962 and was followed by 22 other films with “From Russia with Love” and “Goldfinger” being among the most popular. However I am sure you all have your own favorites so please plan to join us for what I know will be a most memorable evening. We have chosen as our theme “Shaken not Stirred” which harkens back to James Bond’s favorite drink, the classic Martini. You can be sure that in addition to a great selection of Hors d’oeuvres, a gourmet dinner, open bar, and a 10 piece band for dancing, we will also have lots of different martini selections for those daring to follow the

committees and our Management Staff are off to a great start in recommending new ideas to stimulate member participation. The Margaritaville social event attracted more than 80 members and a good time was had by all. Likewise, the new, expanded offerings around the Valentine’s Day Holiday were also well attended! The Chef ’s new menu offerings are now in place so come out and enjoy! Looking ahead to March and April, don’t miss out on one of our most popular family events “Breakfast

“Bond Girls”. Look for your invitation and more details Finally, you should receive your copy of the Club Roster in April. Be sure to read the Club Rules Section to notice some changes promulgated by the Golf and House Committees and approved by the Board of Directors. These changes were made to update our rules to reflect current practices and are highlighted for you to easily notice where changes have been made. - Buck Linthicum www.ChartwellGCC.com

Clubhouse Letter IT IS ELECTION SEASON AT C H A R T W E L L Nobody is running for office and there will be no annoying telephone calls to your homes at dinner time. We will be having no fund raising events and there will be no debates on television. But at Chartwell it is election season and we hope that you will vote! The fact is that we are campaigning for your vote every day. Michael Fay, our new General Manager, has put his team in place and is in the process of putting his signature on the product that is a reflection of his vast industry experience and his strong everyday effort to stay abreast of the latest trends and techniques. You can be assured that this new leadership will pay great dividends to Chartwell by way of superior service, attention to detail and follow through in the resolution of issues that arise. We also have in place Chef Todd Weisz. Chef Todd has spent many hours this winter creating a new menu that takes advantage of ingredients of the highest quality that are sourced locally. The new dinner and lunch menus pretty much allow you to “have it your way,” everyday. In addition to the regular menu items there the daily specials that are a reflection of what is especially in season that day and are always unique creations that should not be missed. We also encourage you to take advantage of the special privileges that being a member at a private club entails. One of those privileges is the ability to order what you would like to eat, even if it is not on the menu. You can be assured that if the ingredients are in the kitchen then Chef Todd and his culinary team would be happy to cook it for you. So if you have that craving on for some chicken fried

3

Chartwell Chatter - March/April 2013

steak let the kitchen know and they will make it happen and if you would like a suggestion for a great wine to have with dinner it is as easy as asking! We have a very special addition to your Chartwell dining experience. After several years of discussion and planning we have added a Chef ’s table in the kitchen. Members will have the opportunity to select the menu, match wines and have your dinner prepared by a world class chef while you relax and watch. It will be a unique experience and one we anticipate being very popular. In the next few weeks we will let you know how you can reserve the chef ’s table and you can start planning your menu. Having a fantastic chef and staff in the kitchen is not helpful if the service provided by the wait staff is not at the same level of excellence, so your General Manager has worked tirelessly with the front of the house to make sure that previously troublesome gap has been closed. If you have dined at Chartwell recently you surely will have noticed an improvement in service levels and attention to detail. You should be able to anticipate that your dinner at the club will be excellent and you will be proud to bring friends, family and guests to join. If you have not been happy with your Chartwell experience please let our manager know with a personal conversation, phone call, online survey or note. Your needs will be addressed and taken seriously. We want to keep your vote. The bar has been completed and the selection of perfectly chilled and poured beers on tap is just one of the upgrades that you will notice. We now have Guinness on tap. That alone would be enough for some but in addition to that heretofore absent favorite we now have the capability to have many other brands on tap as well. The bar upgrades were designed to improve the function and security of the area and the esthetics at the same time. We think that we have succeeded so please stop at the new bar and check it out. Don’t forget to try a few cocktails while you are looking at the handiwork of some very skilled craftsmen. So how do you vote? It is simple! You vote with your feet and get yourself to your club. Play some tennis, or a round of golf. Then you stay for dinner with friends and enjoy the excellence that Chartwell has to offer. We will know we won the election when you return again and bring some guests who may be prospective members. We will know

we absolutely won when those guests become members themselves! So as they say, “Vote early and vote often!” Respectfully, - Lee Meyers

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE REPORT To all our loyal members – Chartwell needs YOU! The goal of all club membership committees is to obtain 100% membership and Chartwell is no exception. Our club currently sits at above 90% capacity but there is plenty of room for new “Chartwellians.” This is where YOU come in. We encourage you to introduce our great club to friends, neighbors, and colleagues. The more members we have the better and more efficiently our club operates and the more services our club can offer its members. Memberships are available in all categories – golf, tennis and social. So please keep our 100% goal in mind when you are at work, play or just out in the community. Tours are available upon request and we look forward to bringing new folks into the Chartwell family. So please spread the word and help the membership committee and the club optimize our membership numbers. And remember, Chartwell needs YOU! The initiation fee for a golf membership can now be paid over 5 years at $5,000 a year. A legacy applicant can pay over ten years at $2,500 a year. Tennis members can pay their initiation over three years at $1,666.66 a tear and social three years at $1,166.67 a year. Thank you for your help in this. - Tim Connolly

Letter From the General Manager O ff W ith A Ban g ! By this time, I am sure that most of our members have seen the newly updated back bar area. The new construction is a spectacular addition to our already beautiful bar top and design. In addition to the cosmetic changes, we have made several exciting adjustments. We have increased our beer selection, both draft and bottled. We have also installed a nitrogen generator system and bulk CO2 system that is cost efficient and maintains the quality levels of our draft beer. We are in the process of adding a Private Label House Wine Program with a major wine producer from Central Coast, California. Also, we are formulating a new Wine List that will include international varietals and a half bottle list so that you may enjoy some of the top wines in the world without the worry of a full bottle purchase. Chartwell has also created a new mobile phone application that you may download for free from the iTunes store. The app is called “My Club” and it is the mobile version of our website. A few of the features are listed below: • Club message notifications of all events pushed to your phone • ForeTees reservations for Golf, Dining and Tennis • All calendar events listed at a touch of a button • Notices displayed similar to text messages • Plus many more features This is a very simple and exciting innovation for the club industry. The system is developed for Android, iPhone and can be used on Blackberry as well. Our culinary team has developed a wonderful new menu format for lunch and dinner that has been very well received by the members. Chef Todd will be revolving our

5

Chartwell Chatter - March/April 2013

menu items based on the season and availability. Our goal is to bring our members the highest quality sustainable items at the best price available. Your management team has also been very busy working with the Social, Tennis and Golf committees on developing the yearly calendar of events. We have brought back many events that have been widely attended in the past with many new ones to fill your calendar. With so many events to choose from, it is your involvement that will make these a success. If one member brings a friend, or requests another member to attend, then we will have standing room only at all our events. As our President has mentioned previously, we need you, the member to utilize your Club to its fullest. Our goal is to increase participation in every meal period, member event and sporting event. We will continue to work with our staff to ensure our members a consistently high quality of food, course and court condition and efficient, friendly service in all areas of the Club. We will begin holding small focus groups to help direct our strategic planning committee on our long range plan for the club. If you are requested to attend please bring all your ideas and wishes with you. The discussions will be vital to the direction of your Club. I look forward to seeing you all at the Club. - Michael

Congratulations Mary

After more than 12 years of service to Chartwell, Mary Hasselhoff, our indispensable administrative assistant and receptionist, has retired effective February 17th due to health reasons. Over the years, Mary has become the pleasant “voice of Chartwell”, often being the first point of contact for new members and guests. Whether taking your reservations, helping set up a meeting or rounding up her beloved ‘Jack’s Pack”, Mary was the consummate professional and an integral part of the Chartwell experience. She will be sorely missed by the staff and membership. We wish her all the best in her retirement. At her request, there will be no retirement gathering, however, Mary has indicated that she would welcome visitors and phone calls. Please call the office on 410-987-0400 for Mary’s contact information. In addition, a scrapbook to gather cards and notes will be kept up in the office and forwarded to her. Please take advantage of this opportunity to say goodbye to one of Chartwell’s finest. www.ChartwellGCC.com

GOLF

We are just a few weeks away from the start of the golf season. The Pro-Shop is really starting to come together. We have been re-vamping the shop before spring officially gets here. A new coat of paint and touch-up work on the cabinetry has gone a long way to freshening the look. A few new decorations will also help give it a unique look and an atmosphere that we are trying to achieve. I think pretty soon you’ll all agree that the shop looks great.

7

a totally new product line. The new Ping G25 line has been completely re-designed and is performing better than ever. We will be carrying more Cobra product than you might have been used to in past years. The vibrant line of woods and irons has continued to grow. The fairway woods have been re-tooled and they look great. They even added several different color options which will be easily recognized from anywhere on the course.

Our new golf committee has been working hard to introduce to you an entirely new golf program. This season’s men’s program will offer a few new events and different formats that should meet the expectations of all skill levels. Our season long qualifying events will offer more opportunity to qualify, and should help increase participation across the board. This year’s women’s programs have new leadership, and they have worked hard at bringing some new, fun formats to life. Be on the lookout for e-mail blast which will provide formats and instructions for registration.

Taylor Made will also have a strong presence in the Pro-Shop. We will have Taylor Made’s new fitting cart that allows us to put any shaft into any head for both drivers and irons. In this new cart we will have the new RBZ Stage 2 line and the very popular R1 driver. The new R1 driver allows adjustability to both loft and lie to meet any player’s preferences. Taylor Made is also launching two new RocketBladez irons, which have already made a huge splash among golfers across the world.

The spring merchandise lines are starting to arrive so we will have new merchandise available by the end of March. This is always an exciting time of year for golfers because we start to get all the new clubs in so we can start figuring out which club is going to help us shave several shots off our handicap. This year is no different. Ping has come out with

Not to be outdone, Titleist has also launched their new line of 913 woods and hybrids and new ProV1 and ProV1X golf ball. For years Titleist has been branded as a manufacturer that only made clubs for low handicappers. Not anymore! They now have models that should cover just about anybody that is interested in Titleist equipment.

Chartwell Chatter - March/April 2013

We will of course have all of these clubs for you to try either in our fitting systems or in our Demo bags. As we did last year, the 1st Tee will be closed on both Demo Days for you to compare the lines to one another. The manufacturers will have launch monitors set-up to help us better fit you for your new woods and hybrids. Titleist and Ping will be present at the first Demo Day, which is Saturday, April 20th from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, May 11th Taylor Made and Cobra will be here from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.. Mark these dates down on your calendars. Should you have any questions on any of these new products or any others, feel free to stop in to the Pro-Shop or give us a call.
