Shady Canyon Golf Club

President’s Departure In the early 90’s when I toured Shady Canyon Golf Club with Tom Fazio it was a combination of hills, bushes, trees and weeds. As Tom visualized the various holes it was impossible for those of us with him to see his vision. Today I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to be here from the beginning and see what a magnificent place Shady Canyon Golf Club has become and know what it ultimately can be. During the past three years we all have experienced an interesting journey filled with challenges and opportunities. The road has not been easy but with the support and patience of the membership, the Board of Directors has been able to guide Shady Canyon Golf Club through some difficult times. While the marketplace is still in a world of flux, I am confident that future boards with the continued support of the membership will guide us successfully.

Management Team

It has been my honor and privilege to have been part of the transition committee and the first Board of Directors of Shady Canyon Golf Club over the past 30 plus months. The Members that have worked with me, through the transition, Bill Bullock, Mo El-Ezaby, Tom Kim, Bill Overfelt, Glenn Schafer, Todd Theodora, Lou Welch, and Chick Willette, and on the first Board of Directors, Dan Hedigan, Tom Heggi, Bill Overfelt, Glenn Schafer, Todd Theodora, Scott Whang, Chick Willette and Jim Wood have selflessly committed their time, their expertise and their energy to bring us to this point in our history. It is their commitment to excellence that convinces me Shady Canyon Golf Club will ultimately be one of the first class private clubs in the country.

Clubhouse Manager Raphael Tuch x7014 | RTuch@

While we are proud of where we are, we know we can be much more. This will happen with a supportive membership that gives of their time and energy as selflessly as those Members who have worked with me to this point in time.

Taking in the Canyon By Zack Bates

Every time I head out onto the golf course, be it taking photos for a tournament or playing golf, I am reminded of what a special place Shady Canyon is. With our natural setting it is the perfect place for photography, walking and I am occasionally tempted to head over to the number 2 fairway for some fishing. During the course closure is the best time to take advantage of the beauty of the course and our surroundings. Starting daily at 5:00pm lace up your tennis shoes, close up your tackle box or grab your camera and head out onto the course. Simply check in with the pro-shop and be aware of what’s going on out on the course.

A Cruise to the Islands

T

he theme for the two day Ladies’ Sycamore Member/Guest Tournament which took place on April 13th and 14th. Beautiful flowers adorned The Club as the spirit of the tropics greeted the Ladies and their Guests for two days of fun filled golf, impeccable cuisine, and wonderful memories. This year’s format was what is known as “eclectic” with the first day requiring all players to play each hole to completion. The scores of both players on each team were then added together to determine the leaders after day one. On the second day, the players were allowed to take the lower score on each hole from day one or day two to card their lowest possible score. Brenda Swantko and her Partner Danna King played two days of very strong golf to win the 2010 Overall Championship with a net score of 131. One of our newest Members Isako Takada and partner Debbie Fleming were the Overall Gross Champions with a score of 153. It was a wonderful event and one that will provide many good memories for years to come. Congratulations to all the winners and thank you to all the participants who helped make this year’s Sycamore so special.

Shady Canyon Hosts Escoffier Society

O

By Alexis Wensman

n May 6th, Shady Canyon was honored by being chosen to be the

host of the semi-annual dinner of the Les Amis d’Escoffier Society. The Escoffier Society, started in 1936, was created by former students of the world renowned “king of chefs” Auguste Escoffier with the idea of becoming the nation’s foremost fraternity of dedicated gastronomes. Membership of this exclusive Society consists of chefs de cuisine, hotel executives, restaurateurs and business executives. Now a major institution in the culinary world, the Society holds two annual dinners, Le Diner de Printemps (Spring Dinner) and Le Diner d’ Automne (Fall Dinner) to provide opportunities for its members’ to share in culinary delights and also generate gains in the perfection of the art of fine dining. The latter objective is promoted through the support of culinary education. Given the exclusive nature of the group and their extremely high culinary standards, it is a very distinct honor to be chosen to host a dinner for them; an honor that Shady Canyon has had twice in the past three years. The dinner was a fantastic success and showcased the best that Shady Canyon had to offer; with the breathtaking room design by Alexis, magnificent haute cuisine by Chef Dominique paired with exclusive wine selections by our Clubhouse Manager and Sommelier Raphael Tuch, and polished execution by the Club Service Staff.

“The food and service last night were incredible. Please thank everyone on your team for a superb evening. The wine and food parings were awesome. I especially liked the sherry with the consommé and the venison with the cabernet franc.” - Joe Gatto, Pacific Club

Talon Cup T

he 9th Annual Shady Canyon Talon Cup took place April 22nd through April 24th. The three day event is the biggest Men’s Event of the year as 58 two man teams participated in the competition. The field was divided into ten flights with each team playing one 9 hole match versus the other five teams in their flight. The points for all five matches are then totaled to determine the winners of each flight who would then move on to compete in the “Derby”, a three hole alternate shot playoff to determine the 2010 Talon Cup Champions. The weather on day one was threatening as overcast skies and wind added another element the participants had to deal with for the first two matches. The cold weather was tempered by the wonderful cuisine prepared by Chef Dominique, and his staff, as the players were treated to nothing but the best fare throughout the entire event.

13

14

S

tag Night followed the Talon Cup Practice Round and was one for the books! Chef

Dominique grilled huge 22oz. Tomahawk Steaks and Lobster for the attendees to continue an evening of over the top showmanship. With cold weather and a likly chance of rain, the Club moved its outdoor event inside, and constructed the 24’ x 24’ ring in the Mixed Grill. This set the stage (literally) for an amazing night of MMA fights with the opening round going the distance to a split decision and 3 other matches all ending in tap-outs. Honorable mention goes to Chris Reedy and Eric Quade for getting in the ring for 2 rounds.

15

two time champions T

he weather turned sunny and warm for the final two days as the competition heated up within each flight. After all 45 holes had been played several flights were won with great play and several had to be decided by tiebreak. The three hole Derby got underway and the competition was close as the players’ nerves were put to the test over three holes of alternate shot play. In the end it was George Wood and his brother Milt who would hold off John Clarey and his partner Joe Ciprari as well as Bernard Puckett and his partner Gary Hardin to claim the 2010 Talon Cup title. This was the second Talon Cup win for the Wood brothers, first in 2006. Thanks to all who participated and made this year’s event so successful. It is always a wonderful opportunity for our Members to showcase the Club and give their Guests a first hand look at what makes Shady Canyon stand apart. Handicap Committee Elects New Chair

2010 Ladies Team Play

Dear Fellow Members, It is my privilege to be nominated as the Handicap Chair for the Shady Canyon Handicap Committee. As our Membership increases more ladies and men are playing golf and participating in golf events, which will require the Club to have a more visible and active Handicap Committee to oversee and maintain equitable play. The Handicap Committee is responsible for maintaining equity throughout the Club and ensuring a Members handicap index is reflective of their playing ability. We will use good judgment and common sense in determining any issues that arise. Our responsibilities will be broad, from overseeing the allocation of hole values, deciding on what Tournaments are posted as a Tournament Scores or a Regular Scores to maintaining a balance of utmost integrity that each Member of Shady Canyon deserves. In the near future we will hold workshops to ensure our commitment to educating all the Members to the finer points of the USGA/SCGA/WSCGA/ GHIN Handicap system and how it affects us as a Club and as individual golfers. Joining me on the Handicap Committee will be Mrs. Debe Lucki, Dr. Jeff Shapiro and Mr. Brian Gunson. If you would like to discuss any of this or have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at eblatchford@coldwellbanker.com. Just a reminder to all golfers that you can post your away scores from nearly anywhere in the U.S. and Mexico now. You can also check your playing

The 2010 Ladies’ Team play season has been going fast and furious with the upcoming closure of the golf course. The Ladies recently completed their final home match on Thursday, April 29th which was against SeaCliff Country Club. There were a total of four home matches and the other three clubs that we played were Mesa Verde, El Niguel, and Coto De Caza. After four home matches and two away matches, the Shady Canyon Ladies have won 4½ points out of 6 in the Gross Division and 4 points out of 6 in the Net Division. The Ladies have two more away matches remaining before their season comes to an end. Anyone who has played in Team Play knows the road matches are extremely difficult to win so if you see any of the Ladies around the club please wish them luck in their upcoming matches and congratulate them on what has been a very successful season to date.

2010 Shady Canyon Player of the Year

PLAY R ER OF THE YEA

2010 has brought quite a few changes to Shady Canyon Golf Club and among them is the introduction of the Shady Player of the Year award. This new award, modeled after the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup, is a year long points race designed to encourage participation and friendly competition in designated Ladies’ and Men’s Golf Events. There will be Ladies’ and Men’s Winners crowned at the conclusion of the year. The awards will be given to players who accumulate the most points on a Net and Gross basis with no player being eligible to win both the Net and Gross award, thereby creating four distinct Player of the Year Awards. Specific Rules and Regulations regarding which events are included and how points are awarded can be found posted in the Locker Rooms as well as the Shady Canyon website. The current top 25 Ladies’ and Men’s Leaderboards can also be found on the Bulletin Boards and the full Leaderboard can be found on the website. This is a new and exciting opportunity to show support for your Club and get your competitive juices flowing all at the same time. Good luck to everyone who participates in the journey to crown our inaugural Ladies’ and Men’s Shady Players of the Year.

The 2010 Men’s Net Match Play Championship got off to a good start on Friday, February 26th with 44 players competing in 18 holes of stroke play to qualify for the top 16 positions in the field. After it was determined who would make the “Sweet 16”, Mother Nature threw everyone a curveball with some inclement weather on Saturday, delaying the start of the Match Play until Sunday the 28th. Unfortunately, this meant the event would not be completed by Sunday afternoon which had been the plan under the new format. However, there were some spirited and close matches on Sunday which would narrow the field from 16 to 4 by day’s end. After a long day of 36 holes for some of the participants, John Stahman, Doug Neary, Curt Ensign, and Eoin Middaugh would be the last men standing moving into the Semi-finals. Curt Ensign edged Eoin Middaugh and John Stahman continued his streak of great play, edging past Doug Neary, moving both players into the Final Match. The Final was close all the way and in the end John Stahman had to go the distance to claim victory on the last hole. Congratulations to John Stahman, your 2010 Net Match Play Champion.

The 2010 Men’s Gross Match Play had a very strong turnout for the qualifying stage held on Friday, March 5th, marking the introduction of a new format in which the entire event would be completed in one weekend. Many of the strongest players at Shady Canyon took part and when the field of 8 was finally set, it was a virtual certainty there would be some great matches to come. Haeseung Lee, Charles Kavanaugh, Eoin Middaugh, Nat DiCarlo, Matt Rocca, Lou Miramontes, Kerry Williams, and Curt Ensign all advanced through qualifying to play the weekend. In a series of extremely close matches, Eoin, Charles, Curt and Nat pulled through to make the Semi-Finals. Eoin held off a charging Charles and Nat survived a tough match with Curt, advancing both of them to the 36 Hole Final. Although the weather threatened throughout the weekend, all matches were completed and Eoin prevailed over Nat in the Final in a friendly battle between two good friends to crown the Match Play Club Champion for 2010. Thanks to all of the participants for their support of this year’s event.

The 2010 Men’s Member/Member was a great success as summertime weather greeted 102 participants in one of the most enjoyable events of the year. The two day event saw some great golf played by all with several teams going really low. The Overall 2010 Champions were Andy Phillips and Michael Reeves, who were propelled to a big lead after day 1 by firing a net 56 in the partners best ball format and finishing with a 2 day net total of 118 just barely holding off the team of Jeff Kaplan and Corey Leyton who finished at 120. Kevin Baker and Mike Gallegos were the Overall Gross Champions with a 2 day total of 134, showing great consistency over 36 holes. The finish for the awards was very close in each flight, creating a little drama until the final scores were posted. Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to all the participants who supported this year’s event.

The Ladies kicked off their 2010 Team Play season on Tuesday, March 16th with a St. Patrick’s Day themed practice round. In the spirit of the Irish holiday, everyone was adorned in their finest green attire to enjoy a wonderful day of practice in anticipation of what is sure to be a fantastic season of Team Play Golf. The Ladies Golf Team has experienced tremendous growth in just the last year alone and all the Ladies are excited to see what is in store for 2010. The excitement and enthusiasm demonstrates the dedication of all to the participation and growth of our Ladies’ Golf Program at Shady Canyon. Thank you to all who took part and here’s to a wonderful 2010 Team Play season.

Hole in One Congratulations to Jeff Cohen on his hole in one, Saturday, March 13th out on hole #8. From the Gold Tees Jeff landed a 146 yard ace with his 6-Iron. The Men’s 2010 Senior Match Play Championship began on March 19th with 26 players competing in stroke play which would reduce the field to the low 8 qualifiers. After the top 5 were determined there was a sudden death playoff between 4 players for 3 available positions in the quarterfinals. When the final 8 players were decided, Larry Igarashi, Jeff Shapiro, Bill Bullock, Brian Hirth, Gary Voorhest, Jim Wood, Mo El-Ezaby, and Jeff Cohen would advance to play for the Match Play Championship. Jeff Cohen advanced to play Brian Hirth and Mo El-Ezaby played Jim Wood in the semi-finals. The great play of Mo El-Ezaby and Brian Hirth led to a competitive final between the two, and in the end it was Mo who broke through to capture his first Perpetual Trophy title as a Member of Shady Canyon Golf Club. Congratulations to Mo El-Ezaby as the 2010 Men’s Senior Match Play Champion and a special thanks to all the participants who supported this year’s event.

Congrats also to David Sun for his hole in one during the Men’s Shady Masters. David took his “Ace” on hole #11 with his 6-Iron.

Shady Canyon Golf Club’s Newest PGA Members The Couples Twilight nine hole event was played Sunday, March 21st and was very well attended. The theme was an official welcome to the start of spring and each of the 60 participants wore Yellow to symbolize the beginning of our warm weather season. Mother Nature fully cooperated by providing a sunny afternoon with mid 70’s temperatures which made for a good time had by all. It was a 3 club best ball format from the couple, meaning each of the participants could only use the same 3 clubs throughout the entire nine holes, which added strategy to the event. Helene and Anders Johnson finished the nine holes with the Low Net score of 30 and Nicole and Eoin Middaugh tied Marie Gray and Scott Stovall for the Low Gross each with scores of 36. It was a wonderful afternoon enjoyed by all and an excellent way to kick off the beginning of spring.

Assistant Golf Professional Chad Smith and Golf Services Supervisor Gregg Walters were both recently elected to membership in the Professional Golfers Association of America. The intensive self study program involved studying every aspect of the business and game of golf. They each traveled to the PGA Education in Port St. Lucie, Florida three times where they undertook multi-day examinations and education seminars conducted by many of the most respected Members of the PGA of America. Their membership is to complement Shady Canyon’s outstanding staff of accomplished PGA Professionals. If you see them around The Club please take a moment to congratulate them on their recent success.

The Ladies Member/Member Tournament got underway on Tuesday, March 23rd and the Ladies were greeted with warm early spring weather and the promise of two fun days of golf ahead. Christina Bak and Debe Lucki highlighted the first day’s play as they posted a blazing net score of 59 to open a 5 stroke advantage on the field. Robyn Puckett and Nancy Webb led the field with a gross 71 after day one. The team of Kathryn Bowen and Sonja Grant put on a charge on day two with a net 62, and Cody Ball and Sharon Valli came out of nowhere with a net 58 but neither team could close the gap and they finished second and third respectively in the net division. Robyn Puckett and Nancy Webb posted another strong score of 70 on Wednesday to win the gross division by a comfortable margin. Congratulations to Christina Bak and Debe Lucki as our 2010 Ladies Member/Member Champions and thanks to all who participated in this year’s event.

The Men’s Shady Masters took place on Saturday, April 10th with a very good turnout of 81 players. The three man scramble format is the only event at Shady Canyon in which the scoring ties in with an actual PGA Tour Event. Each team drew the name of a Pro playing in the actual Masters Tournament in a format that allows the team to use the Pro’s score up to nine times to make up their best 18 hole score. The team of John Stahman, Corey Leyton, and Barry Aronoff used the assistance of their pro Kenny Perry who had two eagles in his round at Augusta National to propel them to a First Place Score of 55.7 Net after 10 percent of the team’s combined handicap had been subtracted. Eoin Middaugh, Brad Dinsmore, and David Clare had the Low Gross score of 58 aided by their Pro Steve Marino who had a scorching 6 birdies in his Saturday round at The Masters. Congratulations to all the Winners and thanks to all who participated in a wonderful day of good golf and great fun.

Tournament Entry Forms We are constantly seeking ways to reduce material costs and labor expenses without jeopardizing the quality of your Membership experience. The practice of mailing Golf Tournament Entry Forms for each event throughout the year creates a large expense and requires many hours of labor. In an effort to reduce these costs the following process will be used to distribute Golf Tournament Entry Forms: • Each Golf Tournament Entry Form will be emailed to all Regular Members. The email will provide the opportunity to enter from the attachment and receive a confirmation. The Men’s March Guest Day took place on Friday, March 26th and welcomed one of the largest fields ever for a single day event. 124 players took part in a one best ball format which saw quite a few teams posting impressive 18 hole scores. Golfing weather could not have been better as warm temperatures and light breezes led to many low scores. Tom Bak and his guest Kevin Bender teamed up with Gary Voorhest and guest Jack Caress to post an eye popping net score of 53 to take first place in the net division. Larry Igarashi and his son Jaycy teamed with Dick Ellison and guest Monte Mahan to take the low gross with a score of 65. A fun format which encouraged aggressive golf, great weather, good friends, and top notch cuisine supplied by Chef Dominique and his staff all contributed to a wonderful day enjoyed by all. Thanks to all who participated and truly made it a day to remember.

• All Golf Tournament Entry Forms will be available on our website, www.shadycanyongolfclub.com. Upon completion of this form you will receive a confirmation. • By request only, your name and mailing address will be added to a distribution list to have each entry form mailed to you as they become available. As the Club reopens from the turf transition project all entry forms will now be distributed via email unless otherwise requested. That being said, if you would like to receive your entry forms via regular mail, or at an email address other than the one you currently receive the weekly announcements from, please contact the Golf Shop at (949)856-7070.

Mockingbird By Steve Zarate

“Then from the neighboring thicket the mockingbird, wildest of singers, Swinging aloft on a willow spray that hung o’er the water. Shook from his little throat such floods of delirious music, That the whole air and the woods and the waves seemed silent to listen.” Author: Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882)

One of the most common and conspicuous birds of our area is the Northern Mockingbird. They often perch in the open on top of a bush or small tree. And as if not obvious enough, they will draw attention to themselves by singing away for extended periods of time. True to its scientific name, Mimus polyglottos, the former means “mimic,” the latter means “many tongued,” Mockingbirds are vocally quite versatile and make over 200 variations of calls and often imitate other species. Their songs are often musical sounding.

Major Turf Talk Blog One of the goals of the turf change is to get back to the original look of a monostand of grass. In other words, we will encourage the growth of bermuda only fairways by keeping rye and poa from establishing. This is the optimum look of a well conditioned fairway. The ability to help control the invasive Poa annua grass will be aided by post emergent herbicides. These chemicals when applied correctly will help reduce the poa populations in the roughs, approaches and fairways.

The Mockingbird is a slender-looking bird about the size of a Robin (10”), long legs, pale gray-brown overall, a shade or so paler on the breast and undersides, and a longish tail that is often held in a horizontal to upward-angling position. The beak is black and slender (good for catching insects and eating berries and fruit) and in profile may look like it has a slightly downward curve. Its wings are black with two white bars. Identification is easily confirmed when seen in flight as the Mockingbird will display distinctive white patches on its wings and on the edges of its tail feathers. The Mockingbird is resident in our area all year. Adult males and females have the same appearance. They tend to be solitary birds so you will usually see one or maybe two at once and not in a flock.

The dust is already flying and to add to my list of projects, we’ve created a weekly blog for the Membership to keep up to date on the course and clubhouse projects. I am looking forward to keeping you all in the loop with lots of pictures and few words. Please check the website for a quick link to my blog or find it at www.scgc.wordpress.com.
