GOLF
Our professional staff is on a mission for the 2012 season. We are trying to do more “coaching” and do less “teaching”. What do we mean by this? So often, especially this time of year, we go down for a lesson and just start working on our swings. And while it is a great time of the year to work on some basics or maybe even make a significant swing change, have you ever noticed that you often end up working on the same faults and fixes. I know I do. If I took a lesson from my old boss from 2002 he’d probably say “You still do that?” Our bodies usually revert back to what is comfortable and familiar, so making long lasting swing changes can be very hard. So it got us thinking and talking that we should be really trying to help golfers “play” or “score” better while also working on their swings. We are going to try to do more “coaching” on the course and also trying to create playing types of situations on the practice areas. Also, we are going to try to get our students to practice better which now gets me to the point of this article. Have you ever noticed that when you go down to practice how much repetition you get into? How often do you find yourself hitting a 7 iron, or worse yet a driver, over, over and over. I know I can be guilty of this from time to time. And when you do this, how often do you get into a nice groove with your swing, and gain confidence and then the 3
Chartwell Chatter - May 2012
next day, you can’t get that groove back on the golf course. Well, if you think about it, how many times do you get to hit the same club 2 times in a row from the same lie and to the same target on the golf course? The only time I can think of is when you’re hitting a provisional or after hitting one out of bounds. A better way to practice might be, after you get loosened up, try to “play golf ” on the range. Try to play 9 holes. Make boundaries for fairways with the targets provided. If you hit a good drive, grab the club that would most likely be used for the second shot and hit it. If you think it would have missed the green, hit a pitch shot. Do this for 9 holes while trying to work on your pre-shot routine, which must be the same routine that you use on the course. Keep changing your targets too, so you have to aim left on one shot and to the right on the next. By the end of your session, hopefully almost all of your clubs are out of your bag and leaning against it, instead of having just your 7 iron completely grass stained. On the short game area, don’t just hit bunker shot after bunker shot. Grab 3 balls and give yourself 3 different lies. Hit those 3 balls onto the green and then putt them out. Set a target score that’s appropriate to your skill level. For instance, if you’re a 2 handicap you’ll probably want to score no more than a 7 on those 3 balls. If you’re a 25 handicap a score of 9 might be your goal. This same
game could be played with Pitch and Chip shots. Give yourself good lies and bad lies just as you would get on the course. Start to evaluate the lie and how you might have to pick different types of shots or play to different targets on the green depending on each lie. Try to put a little pressure on yourself that you have to hit your target score 4 times in a row before you stop practicing. Now to the practice green: You know that big green by the clubhouse that none of us spend enough time on, let’s do similar types of practice. Again, don’t just grab 6 balls and hit putt after putt from one spot. You’re speed will get dialed in after 3 putts and you won’t really be getting good feedback out of the session. Putt from hole to hole for 9 holes with 1 ball and count your total putts. Also, keep track if you are missing putts short, long, left and right. If there is a pattern, talk to your coach about it and maybe there is something in your technique you need to work on or maybe you’re just not aligning yourself well. Bottom line, we are going to make a conscious effort to “coach” better this year and hopefully you can make the same effort to practice better.

GREENS
Horticulturist Tips Jimmy Hogan
With the warm weather we had earlier this year, most plants are about 3 weeks ahead of their normal schedules. So, pay attention to your plants because, if they are 3 weeks ahead of schedule, chances are pretty good that pests are too. Annuals - Annuals can still be planted out in the yard. In addition to the yard, don’t forget to use containers for decoration around your house and patio areas. Containers are easier to create than you may think. It begins with the pot, which could be a hanging basket, an urn, a large planter, or a half whiskey barrel. Pots can be any type or size, just make sure they do have drainage holes in the bottom. A simple design is to have something tall as a centerpiece (grasses or spikes are good choices). Then use an upright or mounding annual that gets somewhere between 2/3 and 1/2 the height of the taller centerpiece (choices here include most of the standards-petunias, begonias, lantana, impatiens, etc). Finally the edges of the container can be planted with a creeping plant. Good choices for these include wave petunias, calibrachoa, variegated vinca vine or even sweet potato vine. Try to work with good color themes- yellow and purple, red/white/pink, red and yellow, or even shades of single colors. Using these color themes brings unity to each container and if they are used in multiple containers, they bring unity to the entire design. A word of caution about containers- they will dry out much more quickly than annuals in the ground so be sure to check the pots daily for water.
Beds - If you did not get an opportunity to fertilize your plants in April, it is still not too late to do it. Again, a good rule of thumb is that you should apply 1 Tbsp. of slow release fertilizer per foot of plant. Also, now you can do some pruning if it needs to be done. For those plants that flowered earlier in the spring, you can prune those back now in order to control growth or shape them. For the other summer flowering shrubs, avoid pruning now because pruning will remove the flower buds for the upcoming season. Now is also the time that you want to monitor weeds in the beds. Weeds will begin to come up, especially if you did not use a pre-emergent herbicide when you mulched. Weeds can be removed by hand, but make sure you get the entire root or many weeds will continue to come back, or worse yet, multiply. The preferred method of eradication is by chemical. Use a non-selective postemergent herbicide (such as Round-up) to remove weeds. As with all chemicals, read the label carefully and avoid spraying the chemical onto the plants that you want to keep. Trees - The only that that really needs to be done with trees is fertilization, if it did not get done last month. Providing enough nutrients is important as the trees begin to flush out and push new growth. Also, make sure that, since the spring season has been dry, you provide enough moisture to the trees so they don’t go into the hot, dry summer months already in a moisture deficit situation.

Chartwell Chatter - May 2012
We are currently (as of April 18), 3-4” below average in rainfall. Turf - This is a busy month for taking care of the turf. First with the warmer temperatures, there is an increased need to mow the lawn. The average height that should be maintained for most grass types is about 3”. It is better to mow more frequently and cut less off the grass than it is to cut infrequently and cut off a lot (never more than 1/3 of the grass blade). Furthermore, you should avoid bagging the clippings since allowing them to fall to the ground reduces your fertilizer and watering needs. Second, if you have not aerified the soil, this is the last month to do so before the hot summer months; you should not aerify during the summer months. Next, if the lawn did not get fertilized in April, it still can be done now. The fertilizer should have both quick and slow release nitrogen. If you did fertilize in April with quick release nitrogen, then an application of slow release nitrogen would be needed at the end of May/beginning of June. Finally, the lawn may need some pesticides applied. Now is the time that there are many different broadleaf weeds in the yard like chickweed, dandelion, henbit, etc. Applying a post-emergent broadleaf weed control product (Weed-B-Gone for example) when the weeds are actively growing is necessary to eliminate some of those weeds. Others are winter annuals and will be dying off soon, if they haven’t already. And finally, by the end of the month, the grubs should easily be in the upper 6” of the soil and applying grub control (Merit, Dylox, Sevin) then would eliminate these pests before they can do too much damage.
MAINTENANCE Ceiling Fan Direction Spring / Summer The basic fact of nature is that warm air rises to the top and cold air settles on the bottom. Air settles in layers from warm at the top to cold at the bottom, if left alone at equilibrium. You should operate your fan so that it turns clockwise (this looks counterclockwise as you are looking up), causing a more directed downdraft, especially with the fan running slightly faster. However, the air is only moved but not cooled! You may find that you can open the window and get the cool evening air to save money on energy costs. Change Refrigerator Water Filter: • Filters that don’t efficiently remove contaminants and impurities may expose you to harmful water. • Follow water filter instructions, as all water filters are different depending on model. • Change filters every 3-6 months depending on condition and usage. Green facts about Chartwell: One of the most important issues of today that will affect our future generations is recycling and going green. Here are just a few facts about our participation on keeping it green! • Many of our rooms have automatic sensors that turn off the lights when motion is not sensed for a certain amount of time. • Many of our outdoor lights are on timers or dusk to dawn sensors so that when there is light outside the parking lot lights are off. • Fluorescent lamps are collected in special containers and shipped to specialty sites that dispose of them according to industry standards. • Batteries are taken to Battery Warehouse for proper disposal. • Last year we purchased recycling containers for the pool and use a comingled system that our waste removal company removes weekly. • Some other areas of concentration are peroxide products for cleaning, and using microfiber products. • Recycled oil from grounds can be reconditioning, reprocessing or re-refining keeping it out of land fills and cooking oil which is used to make products such as lip stick or biodiesel fuels. Our dedication to the environment continues as we try to always keep up with changing times and new industry standards. If you ever need any advice on maintenance issues you can email me at edorn@chartwellgcc.com Erick J. Dorn, Facilities Manager www.ChartwellGCC.com

CULINARY
Oyster Stew Serves 8
This is an easy classic oyster stew recipe with a little twist using poblano peppers, which add a little heat. The key is not to overcook the oysters. Fresh shucked work best but you can use fresh pre-shucked. This recipe is inspired by watermen that would have a pot of milk simmering on board and just pop oysters into the pot for a quick lunch.
Dear Members of Chartwell Country Club, I’m thrilled to be on board as part of the culinary team at Chartwell, and am looking forward to sharing my twenty-five-year, coast-to-coast experiences with you. We have an exciting year in store for us, where I will be working hand-in-hand with our members to improve all culinary aspects of the food at the club, from the pool to the bar to the dining room. In addition to delicious cuisine, I will be offering private parties, wine tastings, and basic and advanced cooking classes.
Ingredients: • ¼ cup diced poblano peppers or green bell peppers • ¼ cup diced onion • 2 garlic cloves minced • 2 tbsp butter • 1 lb raw shucked oysters with liquid • 1 qt half & half • ¼ tsp ground pepper • Chopped parsley and sliced green onion for garnish Procedure: In a heavy bottom pot add the butter and sauté the onions, garlic and peppers until tender. Add oysters, half & half and pepper. Cook over low heat until the edges of the oysters begin to curl and mixture is hot. Do not boil. Remove from heat and place in bowls. Garnish with chopped parsley and sliced green onion. Serve immediately with crackers.
I am excited to meet all of you and am always available for instruction, guidance and to hear suggestions. So please stop by, introduce yourself, and get a taste of what I have to offer. Warm Regards, Chef Todd Weisz www.ChartwellGCC.com

C LU B H O U S E C A N C E L L AT I O N P O L I C Y We often stress the importance of making reservations. It is equally important to notify the Club when changes are needed to a current reservation. Please advise the Club of cancellations or changes in the number in the reservation as soon as possible. While we truly appreciate emergencies and are very aware of the need to make last minute changes, we must require a formal cancellation policy. Effective immediately, all Club parties and special club events will have a 24 hour cancellation policy. All cancellations and changes to reservations made within 24 hours will be subject to a 20% charge of the original price. This fee will help offset commitments made to food purchases, preparation, staffing requirements, decoration and linen purchases. Thank you for your understanding, cooperation and support.
