Letter From the General Manager For Chartwell Golf and Country Club, focusing on the future is critically important as we navigate through turbulent times in our industry and in our state and nation. Several months ago we embraced a Strategic Plan initiative. We are committed to innovation and quality improvement which, by their nature, keep the Club focused on the future. We are always looking ahead - to the Future! To be prepared to meet the challenges of what lies beyond today, we need to envision where we want to be and decide how to get there. We have asked the Chartwell family to engage in a collaborative strategic planning process that will result in a five-year strategic plan to provide a bright future for the club, its members and staff. Our planning efforts are being led by Phil Bowman and a committee of talented members. The process will use open forums, surveys, email, and our website to communicate

the work of the committee and to provide opportunities for comment and participation. As we go through this process, it’s important that we move forward within the framework of the club we’ve developed over the years. First and foremost, our strategic plan will be innovative and pertinent. We should not be planning to conduct our club business the way we’ve always done it. We have new technologies and new challenges. Things are changing so rapidly that not developing a plan would be a disservice to our club, members and past members. We must have within our plan a mechanism to respond to emergent trends and changes in our demographic base. Our new strategic plan must give us the capacity to sustain traditions while grow with the future. Finally, the reason we have a successful club is because we believe in the value of every individual. Everyone has something to contribute to this process. We are less if individuals choose not to participate. Everyone is an important part of this club regardless if you are a member or employee. We will only have the best outcome in this process when all of us participate. - Michael Fay “ M E M B E R S H e l ping M embership ” We want to thank you! Thank you for supporting our great club by providing names of prospective members. We’ve had good results with your referrals and, as winter rolls into spring we’re hoping for more. Our membership is over 90% at the present but we’re striving for 100% and with your help this can be accomplished! Please continue helping our membership grow. The more members Chartwell has, the more services and exciting programs your club can offer. Also remember, that if you sponsor a new golf member, your club dues are free for a year! So think summer, think golf, think tennis, think pool, think dinners on the patio and think Members Helping Membership!

GOLF We are well underway now. Hopefully by now you’ve gotten a chance to stop in and visit with the golf staff. Our newest addition has just joined us. Sean Pender has made his migration to Maryland and is excited to be joining the team. The last several years Sean has worked at Olympia Fields Country Club, in Olympia Fields, Illinois. Olympia Fields is recognized as one of America’s Top 100 Golf Courses in the nation. Sean will share responsibilities with our other Assistant Professionals, Chris and Adam. In a couples of weeks our summer intern from Methodist University PGM, Taylor Graby will be joining the professional staff. Taylor is enrolled in the Professional Golf Management Program at Methodist and will be earning his work study here at Chartwell for the summer. Hopefully by now summer is finally here to stay. There are several upcoming events that you do not want to miss out on. Chartwell Day, our first One Day Member Guest, will take place on Thursday, May 16th. Two weeks later one of the most anticipated events of the year arrives. The Founders Cup is on Friday, May 31st. This 27-hole event is new to the 2013 tournament program. Gentlemen, choose your partner wisely, as the two of you take on the other 70 members in a one day, multi-format event. Our 18-Hole ladies events are also off to a terrific start. The MemberMember is on Wednesday, May 1st. The Stableford Tournament is on Wednesday, June 5th. Lastly, don’t miss out on the 18-Holer Ladies Member-Guest at the end of the 7

month. The 9-Holer’s have introduced several new formats to mix things up this year. The Crab Ball is scheduled for Thursday, May 23rd. The popular Flag Day Tournament cleans up the month in June on Thursday the 27th. Finally, don’t forget that we are running a season long Play with the Pro Tournament. The sign-up is posted in the men’s locker room. This is a great way to get to know the staff and also a great way for us to get to know you and your golf game. You can sign-up with a threesome or as a single. Thank-you in advance for supporting this new event. We have one Demo Day remaining this month. On May 11th, we have Taylor Made and Cobra at Chartwell. Both companies have released completely new lines for 2013. Cobra has the number one selling woods and hybrids at green grass golf clubs. If you haven’t tried their products lately, you will not want to miss this day. Taylor Made continues to splash the market with the new R1 Driver and popular RocketBallz Stage 2 product. The RocketBladez and Tour Preferred irons are getting the most buzz. They are completely different from any other iron that Taylor Made has ever made. They are both very traditional in shape with a ton of technology built into them. As a reminder, we have iron fitting systems for Titleist, Cobra, Taylor Made and Ping. The Taylor Made cart includes woods, as well as irons to make for an outstanding fitting experience. We are fully stocked with Demos from all of these manufacturers, so we encourage you to give them a test drive on the golf course. I look forward to seeing all of you at the club! Rob Agresti Head Golf Professional
G reen C ommittee R eport By now Spring is in full swing and hopefully your golf game is too. Once again, Winter was fairly gentle to our course and Steve and his crew have made many improvements. The most notable is our new driving range. Taking advantage of some necessary maintenance to the drainage field, the range has much improved target greens and drainage, which will hopefully help improve your game. It’s certainly a fantastic addition to one of the primary focal points of our club. The slope on Hole #2 leading from the cart path to the green has also been softened to make accessibility safer and easier. The lovely tree that sat atop that knoll and watched over the hole had been hit by lightning and ultimately suffered irreparable damage. It had become a safety hazard and needed to be removed. Steve and his crew implemented dozens of other landscaping enhancements throughout the course and by now, they should be looking great. Be sure to throw Steve and his guys a compliment next time you see them. They work tirelessly to keep the course looking its best all year long. As many of you might already be aware, Chartwell is blessed with a wide variety of turf (tongue firmly in cheek). The playing surface of our course will hibernate and grow at different times and rates creating this age-old issue of inconsistent lies on our course. The resolution of this issue has been something the Green Committee, along with Steve and his crew, has been exploring for some time. You may have noticed areas that have been “tested”. The most recent primary example is the fairway approaching the #13 green. This is a complex issue for too many reasons to address in this letter. Rest assured, we will continue to research, test and examine the very latest in turf technology. Ultimately, we hope to develop a plan that makes the most sense for the entire club both financially and from a playability standpoint. For more information about the course, I encourage you to visit Steve’s Green Department Blog available on the Club’s website under Golf.
C hef ’ s T ab l e A Chef ’s Table refers to a private dining table or area set up in the kitchen of a restaurant at which a small group of diners eats a menu prepared by the head chef. Many hotels and resorts, particularly high-end properties, offer guests a Chef ’s Table experience, which is usually booked well in advance. The menu is often different from that served in the main restaurant, and tends to be degustation style. If you would like to enjoy this unique experience please contact Michael Fay to begin planning your experience. Available Dates: Wednesday, May 15 and Sunday, June 9 Help create your ultimate meal.

Dry Creek Wine Dinner featuring T im B e l l
May 10, 2013 The Winemaker at Dry Creek Vineyard has worked with a wide range of grape varieties and wine styles in Napa Valley, Sonoma, and the Central Coast. Tim’s creativity in blending and extensive experience shaping wine quality in the vineyard made him a great choice for the winemaking team at Dry Creek Vineyard starting in 2011. He graduated with honors in winemaking at U.C. Davis, learning the intricacies of wine chemistry and microbiology that inform his stylistic choices in creating delicious blends. With this education, and formative experiences in a previous career selling wine, Bell arrived at a balanced, com-plex winemaking style all his own.
