ROGER GOULETTE
I will start by following the annual tradition of giving thanks. First, many thanks to John Byers, Dick Wilmot and Greg Yerkes, who completed their 3-year Board terms, and who are now free to spend their time in more relaxing ways! Also thanks to Terry Robertson, who has resigned his Board position – we will miss him. Thanks also to Ken King, who has agreed to fill Terry’s Board seat for this coming year. I want to give special thanks to Mr. Yerkes for putting in an exceptional year as President. He provided effective leadership to the Board, served as a great role model for me; and set the direction that this Board will follow to make Mesa Verde the best club we can be. I want to welcome our newest Board Members: Steve Check, Mike Kelso and Doug Sturgess. They bring diversified experience and knowledge, and new energy to the Board. I look forward to working with them. Their Committee Liaison assignments and all other Board assignments were announced at the November 16th Board meeting.

Lastly, on the subject of thanks; we owe a huge THANK YOU to Jeremy Samson, the Management Team, and the entire Staff for all their hard work and excellent results. I particularly appreciate the spirit that I see in every department to continuously strive to do better.

During the past year, the Board was successful in getting Master Plans developed (1), for the Golf Course (including a Tree Master Plan); and (2) for the Clubhouse/Facilities. These plans, which include a multi-year time frame, have been reviewed by the relevant committees; and we are now going through the process of clarifying and refining the plans. This year, our primary objective is to move into an implementation phase. Let me explain. To implement these plans, due to the magnitude of cost involved, the Membership will be asked to approve specific projects and financing. The Board and Management agree on a process to communicate the conceptual plans, and get inputs from the Membership to refine and prioritize the projects that comprise the plans. We have had one Focus Group participate in this review. We will have at least one or perhaps two additional Focus Group sessions; we anticipate a Membership Survey, then a Town Hall meeting. All of this is to obtain Membership inputs, so that we have a set of plans that the majority of the Membership will support. We will then put specific projects to a vote. I look forward to your participation and support. (Continued on pg. 6) w w w.m esave rde c c.c om

GOLF ANNOUNCEMENTS
SHORT SHOTS
her eighth women’s club championship. Quite an accomplishment. In the spring we crowned new Senior Club Champions. Mitch Allenspach won his first big Mesa Verde tournament when he captured the overall gross championship. The ageless Don Banks won both the net divisions – Senior and Super Senior – and Larry Rausch converted his opportunity and ended up with the Super Senior gross title. Well done all!
First, let all of us in Golf Operations wish you the happiest of holidays. We trust you’ll find good health and good golf in 2017. At the end of the year I like to take a look back at our champions, especially those who have won something all by themselves. Why do I like to do that? Quite simple really. It’s hard and once you win a championship, you are forever one of its champions. In essence, you become part of the club’s history, tradition and perhaps even its lore. We hang your name on a perpetual plaque. I think back to the first time I played Newport National Golf Club in Rhode Island. Newport National is one of the five original members of the then fledgling United States Golf Association. On its clubhouse wall was a plaque (actually it was an old whaler’s oar) with all its club champions listed. The list goes back to 1893. Pretty cool! And the first champ’s name is still there. I’ll bet his great, great grand children drop by once in a while to see his name up on the wall. We have a number of tournaments throughout the year that stand out above the others. More than anything, I think I like to remind the champions themselves of what they accomplished. Because, as I’m sure they will tell you, it wasn’t easy and it was pretty nerve wracking.
It’s very difficult to win a tournament. First we need to learn the game – that takes a while in itself. Second you need to learn to play under competitive conditions – a whole other ball game! I refer to it as playing with the flames of the dragon’s breath flickering on your fanny. Then, as if that isn’t enough, it usually requires a little good fortune, for when it comes to tournament golf, old Murphy always seems to be lurking somewhere to throw down his “law.” So a hats off salute to Mesa Verde’s champions. Since the President’s Cup leads off the lineup, how about that Rick Campo. Rick is not a seasoned golfer by some standards, but he has been improving his game steadily over the year. He has managed to work himself into some pressurized situations in tournaments. That experience paid off. This year he became the President’s Cup Champion when he beat back Dai Phung in the final match. Congrats to Rick who is the net match play champion of the whole club. There were 128 playing in the first round. Definitely one of the club’s biggest and most prestigious tournaments. How about Madelaine Campbell! Madelaine won

Which couples reign as the best in the club? No doubt about it – Terry and Ellen Stewart won their fifth gross Mr. & Mrs. Club Championship – also a record (we think). Dave and Theresa Waller captured the net title in their first attempt – so much for that experience thing! In the club’s major all-member team event, Marv Ingram and Mike Lupton won the Member-Member Team Championship for a second time. You have to go back to 2007 to find the first time they won. Congrats! The granddaddy of them all is the Club Championship. This past year Ryan Gale notched his name in the club’s annals with his fifth win. A pretty impressive accomplishment. A special tip of the cap to all those 2016 winners. You shall forever be a part of Mesa Verde. That said, the first big tournament of the year is coming – the 2017 President’s Cup. Opening round play can begin as early as Saturday, January 7th. If you haven’t played a club tournament yet, make sure to sign up. There is nothing quite like feeling that dragon’s flickering flames when you……………………………. Golf Your Ball, Tom

If you don’t want to watch the Rose Bowl Parade, come join a little golf fun – The Annual New Year’s Day Tamale Massacre.
PRESIDENT'S CUP
The first major tournament of the year – the President’s Cup – is coming soon. This is the club’s net championship. This match play championship officially starts on January 7th. Players will have approximately one month to complete each match. Play will be to the low index of the previous 12 months. This past year we had 128 players sign up – a record number of participants! Sign-ups can be through Foretees, in person, by phone (714) 549-0522, or email.
The Golf Shop is running this for the 11th consecutive year. You can sign up individually or with your own group. Players will be blind drawn from handicap pools – the low pool will draw from the high pool this year. The twoman teams will play combined aggregate Stableford with points awarded for bogey, par, birdie, eagle or double eagle, one through five points respectively – no minus points. The pot will be split between the team purse – all net, individual gross and individual net scores and both gross and net skins. Entry is $100 per player cash. Following play, fresh tamales will be served in the Members’ Grill. Sign up in the Golf Shop or on Foretees.

FROM THE RED TEES The last month of the year is here. Can you believe it? It’s been a good year with many new players joining the club, fun guest days and tournaments, exciting Spring and Fall Team matches and accomplishments, and wonderful golfing conditions at Mesa Verde. A big thank you goes to the 2016 WGA Board and volunteers who have given their time, dedication and talent in making our ladies events successful and fun to attend! In December we install our 2017 WGA board and they are already gearing up for next year’s events. Volunteers are always needed and welcomed. It’s a great way to learn the basics of scoring, tournament planning and to meet new people. Please let any new WGA Board member know if you want to help, they would love to hear from you! Work has begun on the 2017 Roster Booklet and will be finalized shortly. Please advise Betty Rothman as soon as possible of any corrections or changes to your contact information.

We played our last major tournament of the year, Partner’s Net in November. My partner has finally picked all the sand out of her hair from the bunkers I put her in and is still talking to me, so we survived and will take up the challenge again next year! It was a tight race to the finish and a great format as always. Individual teams were awarded for the low rounds of the day and three-day cumulative winners awarded for their outstanding overall performance. There were 12 net places paid for overall play. Kudos to everyone who participated and finished the challenge! Your top winners are:

Bylaws Update
Thursday, December 1
Our Bylaws are old and in need of updates. Jerry Fitch has been working with Mr. Samson and Legal Counsel to make the necessary and desired changes. We are close to having the revisions to our liking. Membership approval is required in order to change the Bylaws. As soon as the documents are ready, we will distribute them to all Regular Members, showing the proposed changes; and will ask for your approval. Please be on the lookout for that mailing. Membership Update As you know, we began our Preview Membership Program in March 2016 and have extended it until December 31, 2016, at which time the current program will terminate. Since its inception we have previewed 38 prospective Regular Members and 24 prospective Social Members. We have admitted 24 Regular Members and 17 Social Members. The Sale List, which had over 40 memberships in March is now down to about 14 memberships for sale. This program has been effective in reducing the time a membership sits on the Sale List; and it has demonstrated that we can attract, vet and admit high quality prospects who want to be Mesa Verde members. The Membership Committee has worked tirelessly in meeting, screening, and vetting these prospects. Many thanks to Marv Ingram, prior Membership Committee Chair (resigned), for his efforts and leadership over the past two years. Doug Ciralli has agreed to Chair the Committee now; and is working on refining the process and re-energizing the Committee to generate interest in the Club and add new, high quality members. Please give them your fullest support. In closing, I commit that I will do my best to listen, be objective, and provide leadership and support, so that we can make Mesa Verde the best Club it can be. I wish you all a very Happy and Healthy Holiday Season. See you around the Club, Roger

FROM THE HOUSE COMMITTEE
CLUBHOUSE ATTIRE
We just wanted to reach out and remind our fellow members about the club's dress code, years ago we started allowing blue jeans into the club (with no tears or holes in them) we have not changed our dress code to allow shirts with no collars. Each month for the next few months we will be sharing a tip on the club's dress code, but wanted to share the rules in advance of the holidays. Thank you, Larry Weichman Chairman, Mesa Verde House Committee Monthly Tip on Golf Shirts
