NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB
W
FROM THE GM elcome to the Magazine of the new Newport Beach Country Club! In its inaugural edition, NBCC magazine is designed to entertain our members and their guests with more features, more long-form content, more pictures, and contributions from some of our leading local business partners. The new magazine demonstrates a new era and a new commitment to excellence at your club.
This summer season we encourage our members to take full advantage of all that the new club has to offer. We are dedicated to creating memorable adventures for years to come, and this fantastic new clubhouse now paired with our beloved golf course has resulted in a world class club on par with the very best in California and the rest of the county.
The club has long presented a beautifully maintained golf course, and course superintendent Ron Benedict and his staff have worked tirelessly in 2016 to bring about the fantastic conditions we’ve seen this year. Ron’s greens are the best in the county, and the work
done on the fairways over the winter has resulted in velvety landing areas and made-to-order lies, perfect for shaving strokes off those handicaps. Learn more about Ron Benedict and his long-term improvement plan for the golf course in this inaugural issue.
Speaking of handicaps, Carlo Borunda and his golf professional staff are at the ready to help work the kinks out of those swings and
get the ball on Ron’s short grass more often. Stop by the golf shop to arrange a private lesson, and while doing so check out the pool table and do some shopping for those unfortunate friends and neighbors that can only dream of a membership at NBCC. Retail
Manager Tammy Kern has added several new lines of high-end golf and athletic apparel for men and women in our expanded and improved golf shop.
Food and Beverage Manager Daniel Daoud has joined long-time Executive Chef Lonnie Shepard to unveil “Seahorse Grille,” the
club’s signature dining location on the second floor. It is no overstatement to say that the combination of Lonnie’s food with Daniel’s sophisticated service technique presented in the casually elegant ambience of the Seahorse Grille results in a club dining location
with no equal. A celebration of the Newport Beach lifestyle occurs five nights weekly in the club’s smashing new restaurant that our members will be enjoying for years to come. Cheers!
Lastly, NBCC promotes a healthy lifestyle and Recreation Manager Natalie Bernal is here to help with private trainers, yoga and
pilates classes, and anything else fitness and wellness-related. Look forward to Natalie’s own boxing workout classes, and in short order Natalie will be opening the NBCC Aquatic Center for lap swimming, kids swim lessons, and poolside fun for the whole family. Discover the New Newport Beach Country Club…
a place that is by any stretch of the imagination, magnificent. Enjoy the club. You’ve earned it. Warm regards, CASEY KAUT General Manager

W
hen Forest “Woody” Smith III’s father bought Newport Beach Country Club in July 1964, little did he know that a 25-year lease would turn into a lifelong family passion that
would become the centerpiece of Newport Beach club life. Lucky for Woody and his wife Terry—and for the other original members—it did.
On Valentine’s Day 1954, James Irvine hit the first ball on the tee that officially opened the club (then known as Irvine Coast Country Club). The course was always considered temporary—the thinking being that the land was far too valuable for golf. When the Smith family took over, the clock was ticking. In 1967, the Irvine Company created Fashion Island on land that included holes 16, 17 and 18. The catch: giving the Smiths new land for the new finishing holes—plus a 25-year extension on the lease. For Woody, NBCC was the place to work hard every day with his dad (“as maître de, chief bottle washer and whatever we needed”) and mix with future Golf Greats and celebs the likes of Fuzzy Zoeller, Scott Hope, Fred MacMurray and 49ers wide receiver Paul Salata (creator of the NFL Draft Mr. Irrelevant Award). “Back then, the Toshiba Classic was called the Crosby Southern,” says Woody. “It was started as a benefit for Hoag Hospital by five guys who

or those who’ve traveled to Europe during the summer, the joys of dry, still Rosé wines are not new. From sultry, full bodied styles in Spain, to the pale salmon hue of France’s Tavel; Rosé has for decades been the definitive
summer tipple. The purchase of Miraval Rosé in Provence by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie was a clear signal Americans have comfortably settled into grown-up pink wine. During the last decade, the cavity causing tendencies of U.S. consumers, fueled by oceans of White Zinfandel and sparkling pink Moscato, has yielded increasing shelf and menu space to the dry Rosé movement. Rosé appreciation mirrors life. When we’re young, we love sweets.
As we develop,
dry styles take center stage. And when we’re mature, confident and looking to indulge, there’s Rosé Champagne. Several years ago I had the good fortune to chat with Richard Geoffroy, Wine Maker at Dom Perignon. His Rosé sells for as much as $325 a bottle in the U.S., nearly twice the price of Dom Perignon Blanc. When I asked why that was, he said it was the most challenging wine to produce. Less than 10% of Champagne is pink. Virtually no still red wine is produced there, despite 70% of the area being planted to dark grapes (Meunier and Pinot Noir). This means that even in a year when Mr. Geoffroy produces an excellent Blanc (white) Champagne, there is no guarantee a Rosé will be made. Coupled with exceptional quality, lower volumes and a 10 year production cycle, the premium makes more sense. Owing to the fact they are tricky to make, prices for Rosé Champagne tend to be higher categorically, regardless of producer. Despite this rarity, all Rosé does not require an outlay of over $300 a bottle. Most pink Champagne is non-vintage; meaning it is younger, fresh, and ready to drink. These wines are blended from several years to assure consistency of style and quality. About 90% of all Champagne falls into this category. An excellent example with a storied past is Ruinart Rosé. Founded in 1729, Ruinart is not only the oldest producer in Champagne, but the first to commercially produce a Rosé.

T
he next level up in the realm of fine pink fizz is Vintage Champagne. Produced exclusively from grapes grown in the year which appears on the label, these wines take a minimum of three years to craft and many have the potential to improve with further ageing in bottle. This is not
typically the case with non-vintage Champagne. Most of us are familiar with the Yellow Label of Veuve Clicquot, but far fewer have been exposed to their vintage wines. Their Vintage 2008 Rosé took nearly eight years to make, and has a taste that combines crushed raspberries and freshly baked brioche.
T
he least known category in Champagne, be it white or pink, is called Prestige Cuvee. This is where Mr. Geoffroy’s Dom Perignon lives. Expect to pay the most for Prestige Cuvees, followed by vintage and non-vintage Champagne. They represent the finest of their kind,
with the best possessing the capacity to improve for decades. Nearly all Rosé Champagne is dry, labeled as Brut, though sweeter iterations do exist. Of these, Demi-Sec is the most common, and will appear printed on the front label. Champagne leader Moet & Chandon markets their sweeter style under the Nectar Imperial label. In addition to its rarity, Rosé Champagne gives an enormous amount of pleasure. If romance was bottled as wine, it would be in the form of Rosé Champagne; the pinnacle of sophisticated, sexy libations. It also happens to be incredibly versatile with food. I once hosted a burgers & bubbles dinner in NYC which proved that even the noble burger could be elevated by a good glass of pink fizz. If you’ve never had French fries or fried chicken with Rosé Champagne, I highly recommend doing so. It will redefine date night.

According to head pro Carlo Borunda, “the golf course used to
spectacular, new clubhouse that’s considered one
makes the course play quite a bit longer.” Kikuyu is a thicker,
is a traditional club with a recently completed,
of the gems of southern California golf. The golf course, laid
out by William P. “Billy” Bell and his son, Billy Bell, Jr., has stood the test of time and presents a complete test for players
at all ability levels. With greens and tees placed close together, the walker-friendly design has been revised and updated over the years, but it retains the strategic core that Bell, a prolific
architect who collaborated with legendary designer George C. Thomas in the 1920s, drilled into it.
play short, but the introduction of kikuyu grass in the fairways stickier grass that permits little roll. The course has other
defenses. The greens, Borunda explains, are small and elusive. Some are undulating. They are surfaced in poa annua, a finicky
grass that often plays different in the morning than it does in the afternoon.
28 | NewportBeachCC.com
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| On the other hand, Fred Couples proclaimed the greens “some of the best
I’ve ever putted on” during the Annual Newport Beach Country Club
hosted a Champions Tour event. And despite the fact that Duffy Waldorf
once carded a 60, and that a top college player recently shot a 61 during a sectional qualifier, the 6,601-yard, par-71 layout has proven to be an ideal venue for club championships.
While most clubs use a match play format for the club championship, Newport Beach CC conducts a 54-hole medal (stroke play) event for men
and women. This year’s champion is a familiar name. Jeff Bloom claimed his fourth club championship in June, winning by five strokes with scores of 75, 74 and 77.
A member since 1998, Bloom, who lives across the street from the club, is a self-taught golfer who took up the game at the advanced age of 39. Like
many good players at Newport Beach CC, he came to golf late. “We don’t
have a lot of club members with deep golf pedigrees,” he observes, noting that “baseball was everything” for him and other youngsters growing up in Orange County.
Like other good athletes, Bloom adapted once his competitive tennis days
were over. He says his first club championship victory, in 2003, came only
4 ½ years after he took up golf. Improbably, it was his first competitive event ever.
Scores this year were relatively high, Bloom says, because the superintendent (who he praises for his “phenomenal work”) put the pins in precarious
positions each day of the championship. As competitors know all too well, the club’s tiny, tricky greens can take their toll when the pins are tucked.
“If I play indifferently on a normal weekend round I’ll shoot 75, but in a
club championship, there’s more pressure to not hit a bad shot,” Bloom
admits. However, he says he made a swing change last year that has enabled him to play more confidently, as opposed to trying to avoid mistakes.
The biggest prize awaiting Newport Beach CC’s four-time champion? “The general manager came up to me after I won and told me that I’ll be
getting a personalized parking spot once the new clubhouse is completed,” Bloom says with obvious pride.

ROXY’S RULES
S
o do you want to know about OBSTRUCTIONS? The kind you find on the golf course? An OBSTRUCTION is any artificial object and all artificial surfaces in bounds on the golf course. There are three types : movable, immovable and temporary immovable obstructions.
From the Definitions in the rule book Roxy always carries in her golf bag, she knows that an obstruction is movable if it can be moved without unreasonable effort or unreasonable delay of play. Otherwise the obstruction is immovable. Examples of movable obstructions are hoses, trash, most stakes (but not white OB stakes because they are defined as not obstructions) the “gate stakes” marking entrance and exit to the fairway, and golf carts. The relief without penalty is to remove the movable obstruction. You may remove it even if it does not interfere with your lie, stance or swing. (Rule 24-1.) If necessary to remove the obstruction, you can lift and clean your ball in the process. Examples of immovable obstructions are sprinkler heads, electric boxes, cart paths, drains, fixed yardage monuments and stakes and wires holding young trees (not the tree itself.) Generally if the obstruction interferes with the player’s lie or area of intended stance or swing, the player gets relief without penalty with a drop of 1 club length from the nearest point of relief no closer to the hole. There is no relief if the obstruction merely interferes with the line of play. (No line of sight relief from an immovable obstruction. Rule 24-2.) Now, with the Toshiba Classic coming up, Roxy checked the Appendix I. 4 b in her rule book to find that temporary immovable obstructions are non-permanent artificial objects erected in connection with a competition that are fixed and not readily movable. Examples include tents, scoreboards, grandstands, TV towers and lavatories. With these, the player gets all the free relief she gets from an immovable obstruction and in addition she gets relief without penalty if the temporary obstruction interferes with her line of play. (Here she gets line of sight relief without penalty.) If you have questions, e-mail Roxy through her friend Debraeallen@yahoo.com and Roxy will reply to you. Let me know if you need anything more. GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT RON BENEDICT
Celebrating his 26th year at Newport Beach Country Club this July, Ron Benedict is an expert agronomist who’s stayed on top of his craft and found new ways to cope with a protracted drought the past few years. Golfers sing his praises, and with reason. “I inherited fairways that were a Heinz 57 when it came to varieties of turf grasses,” he muses. “The fairways when I arrived were 15% kikuyu (a grass species native to East Africa) blended with bermudagrass, bluegrass and rye. Then the PGA Champions Tour staff wanted to overseed the fairways with ryegrass, which we did from 1996 – 2006. We stopped overseeding in 2007.” Since that time, Benedict and his staff have planted and sodded kikuyu in the fairways while eliminating less desirable grass varietals that had crept into the mix. (He describes the rough as a “hodgepodge of grasses,” but as wayward golfers freely admit, that’s why they call it the rough). Kikuyu, Benedict explains, flourishes in southern California’s temperate coastal climate. “It never quite goes dormant and it stays green into November,” he explains. “Golfers love it—the ball sits up like it’s on a tee.” The club’s fairways, he says, are irrigated with recycled water, while the superb poa annua greens are irrigated with potable water drawn from a separate system. California’s four-year drought, which improved last summer, had So Cal superintendents

scrambling for efficient water management practices. Benedict never lost his cool, or his control of the course. Asked how his duties as a superintendent have changed over the years, Benedict says minimizing the potentially harmful impacts of chemical and pesticide application have been at the forefront of his profession. “The safety protocols are so much better now,” he says. The best part of his job? “Working at a club right on the famed Pacific Coast Highway.” With the new clubhouse complete, the club now turns its attention to a long range improvement plan for the golf course. The project began in earnest this past winter as Ron has added over 70,000 square feet of Kikuyu Grass sod to the fairways in an effort to get the fairways to 100% Kikuyu. Next up, Ron and his team will work with Golf Course architect Casey O’Callahan on myriad improvements that will include tree removal, landscaping upgrades, repositioning of bunkers, improved greens, turf reduction, irrigation system upgrades, and other strategic changes to make the best course in Orange County even better. As has been the case for nearly 30 years, the members at Newport Beach Country Club are in great hands with Ron Benedict.
RILEY One of the key players on the team is a handsome English shepherd named Riley, a friendly newcomer that’s wellknown to the members. “Riley is really good at chasing waterfowl into the ponds, especially nuisance birds like Canadian geese and wigeon ducks that can make a mess on the course.” Benedict had raised three German shepherds
previously
but
noticed
an entry on the website of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (of which he’s a member) stating that English shepherds and golf courses were a good fit. A spirited dog with a job to do who runs four to five miles a day, Riley knows the rules and never barks on a player’s backswing.

DANIEL DAOUD, FOOD AND BEVERAGE MANAGER GREETINGS CLUB MEMBERS It is with great pleasure that I write our first Food & Beverage article in our brand new Newport Beach Country Club magazine. With the first of our quarterly magazines, I would like to start with a few overall points about our brand new clubhouse. First & foremost, the different outlets and their hours of operation for dining are as follows: SEAHORSE GRILLE: Lunch menu Tuesday through Sunday, 11am to 2pm. Dinner menu Tuesday through Thursday, 5pm to 9pm. Friday and Saturday, 5pm to 10pm. Bar menu Tuesday through Thursday, 2pm to 9pm. Bar menu Friday and Saturday, 2pm to 10pm. Bar menu Sunday, 2pm to 9pm. LADIES & MEN’S GRILLS: Breakfast menu 6:30am to 11am. Lunch menu 11am to 2pm. Bar is open till Sundown. THE WEDGE: 8am to 4pm.
As we gain momentum throughout the summer months and explore the brand new facility, we respectfully ask for the following to ensure we continually exceed our members’ expectations: For our Seahorse Grille, we strongly encourage making reservations. Our restaurant is filling up and selling out quickly, and we want to ensure we continually take the best possible care of our members. Knowing and planning ahead for the day to come is a tremendous asset that can help us to accomplish this. Secondly, upon arrival, unless sitting at the indoor / outdoor bar which is open seating, we ask that you check in with our hosts. They will be able to assist with the best available seating within the restaurant. We are very excited to have moved into our brand new clubhouse; and as a gem in Newport Beach, CA, we strive to be not only the best of the best, but your home away from home. From our kitchen to yours, Bon Apetit! Daniel Daoud | Food & Beverage Manager

T
hat time has finally arrived! The spectacular event spaces we have been waiting for are
complete and they are more beautiful than we ever imagined. The final finishes have completed
the look perfectly. Our new Newport Ballroom can hold up to 300 guests and offers lofty
ceilings vaulted up to 19 feet and stunning, panoramic views of the ocean and golf course.
The Ballroom also includes a private entrance, pre-function area, and two outdoor terraces. For events
up to 100 guests, our Ocean Boardroom is the ideal venue with a spacious outdoor terrace and equally spectacular views of the ocean. For more intimate gatherings, both of our event spaces can be partitioned
into smaller sections on select dates. We are also prepping for an outdoor lawn to host ceremonies and private events, which we anticipate to be available by the holiday season.
For more details, please feel free to visit me in the Executive Offices, or contact me directly at
949-524-8110 or asparkman@newportbeachcc.com. I look forward to working with you and creating memorable events for you and your guests in our new clubhouse!
