THE NEWSLETTER OF NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB
NBCC CLUB UPDATE
Club Update Hello and Happy Thanksgiving! Fall is finally upon us, cooler temperatures have arrived at long last, and the 20th anniversary of the Toshiba Classic here at Newport Beach Country Club is now in the rearview mirror. Congratulations to all of the participants—PGA Champions TOUR players and Pro-Am contestants alike. Tournament results will be published in December’s “In the Rough” along with photographs of our members enjoying the competition and camaraderie in the “Clubhouse Tent” and around the golf course. Thanks to all for another successful event, and special thanks to Ron Benedict, Mike Novak and the Golf Course Maintenance staff for another year of hard work delivering a beautiful golf course under very difficult conditions. With the 2016 Toshiba Classic behind us, the staff at Newport Beach Country Club can turn its attention fully towards next year’s Clubhouse Grand Opening and the next exciting era in NBCC’s storied history. To that end, we’ve added some new key staff members and will certainly be bringing on quite a few more in the coming weeks and months. In our Food & Beverage department, please welcome to the NBCC family Mr. Daniel Daoud, Food & Beverage Manager, and Mr. Anthony Paccione, Food & Beverage Supervisor. Daniel and Anthony are the first arrivals to what will be an expanded Food & Beverage team responsible for providing sophisticated service while retaining that traditional NBCC familiarity and special touch. These men are fortunate to inherit the treasured dining room staff at NBCC and our members can expect the same recognition and warmth in the new Clubhouse as our core staff will remain in place to set the example for the new faces we’ll be seeing as we get closer to opening. Speaking of “getting closer,” the project remains on schedule for an early spring opening and 2016 is now just days away. The joyfully hectic upcoming holiday season should serve to keep us all occupied and help the time fly during these final few months of construction. The anticipation is building as our members will need to wait just a few months past Christmas before we get to open the best present of all: a new 56,000 square foot place to call home well into the 21st Century. Look for the weekly email communication for updates over the winter to stay apprised. We look forward to welcoming you all at the Club. Sincerely, Casey Kaut General Manager

NBCC MEMBERSHIP NEWS
Membership News It is truly hard to believe that we are into November and Thanksgiving will soon be here. As of this writing I look forward to seeing all our members out enjoying the Toshiba Classic. Thank you for your support of the Toshiba Classic this year and the years to come. We appreciate your continued patience as we hit the stretch run of the clubhouse project. Interest in membership opportunities has been unwavering this past month specifically with the Social Sport category. As many of you are aware, we finished up the month of September and our member referral program with over one hundred new Social Sport Members. I have been frequently asked recently if we have a target number of total Social Members and where we are currently in relation to that capacity. Yes, we have a target capacity of 300 total Social Members and we currently have just shy of 200 after our very successful summer membership drive. Needless to say, we now have a limited number of spots available, and with significant interest expected to continue, now is a very good time for your friends and associates to get involved while the opportunity still exists. A huge thank you to all of those who participated in the social membership referral program. I appreciate the time and effort you made as Member Sponsors to introduce your friends and to allow us to grow the Club the right way. We are thrilled with all of our newest members, many of which are family of some of our long time members and others friends and neighbors. Because of the number of new members I have chosen to list them in the adjacent column by last name. Thanks again and enjoy this exciting ride! Sincerely, Clint Cook Membership Director

NBCC NEWS
NBCC Golf Update October was all about the Toshiba Classic. As I write this article I can’t help but be proud of the Golf Operations Staff and all the employees at NBCC for their hard work and diligence in preparing for the Toshiba Classic. Not only is this year’s event being held at a different time of year it has also been a challenge due to the loss of our clubhouse (not that anyone wants it back, we can’t wait for the new one). Through all the preparations our staff has remained excited and eager to welcome our members to the 2016 tournament. I look forward to sharing my experience with you next month. This will be my first time representing NBCC as Head Golf Professional and I hope to do the club proud. As we focus on the events of this month I can’t wait for Thanksgiving! This is one of my favorite holidays as I get to enjoy it by spending the day with my wife and daughters and we, as a family, get to enjoy my mom’s wonderful Thanksgiving dinner. I’m sure my wife will forgive for saying this but mom’s Thanksgiving dinner is the BEST! I am also thankful for the family I have here at the Club and our newest extended family addition. Congratulations to Robbie Maurer and his wife Amber who welcomed their second child, Clark to the world on October 12th! At 8 lbs. 10 oz. he made quite the entrance. The kid already won me over and made my life ea0sier with his arrival coming one week earlier than expected, which allowed Robbie to return to work just in time for the Toshiba Classic. Way to go KID! Aside from our new friend, Clark I am proud to say we have a wonderful Staff of Professionals and Outside Service Attendants at the club. Thank you to all our members for making each one of us feel appreciated each day you come to the Club. Enjoy your holiday and please continue to let the Golf Shop Staff know how we can improve your experience at the Club.

Ladies Oktoberfest Tournament If you want a really great Oktoberfest, turn it over to a German to plan an event that makes you think you’ve been transported to Munich. Women’s Group Senior German Creative Director Traudi Schoenek, with the very capable assistance of Tina Newman, planned and executed a high energy member guest day. Members and guests found themselves teeing off next to a large beer keg while being serenaded with music clearly recorded at a German beer hall. The dining room was filled with blue and white balloons and Bavarian streamers, and on each table, German beer bottles, lovingly collected over several months, were displayed with white flowers. Lunch was, of course, bratwurst and sauerkraut (how could it be anything else?) with Bavarian chocolate cupcakes to round it all off. Prizes were paid through fifth place in three flights, clearly way too many to list here so congratulations to all our winners and thank you to all our participants!

Mary K. Browne Tournament Our major annual member-member net tournament, the Mary K. Browne, was held on October 6th and 8th and proved to be a fun day for everyone. This tournament was created by Mary K. Browne (1891-1971), a former member of NBCC and of the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Among her many golf and tennis trophies, she won the Southern California golf championship in 1924 and the Cleveland Women’s Golf Association Championship in 1931, 1932, 1934 and 1935. We are proud to commemorate this exceptional woman athlete. And thank you to the exceptional women of NBCC who participate in this and all our events throughout the year! 2015 Champions. . . . Low Net When you have that round when just everything goes right . . . did you know Golf Shop credit (and accolades) go each month to the Women’s Group member with the lowest net score? If you think there is any chance it might be you, complete a separate score card for your magical round, write “LOW NET” on it, and place it in the box next to the computer in the Golf Shop where your regular score cards go. Please make sure the card is signed, dated, and attested. AND, if this would happen to make you low net of the year, your name would go on a plaque which will (in the not too distant future) hang in the ladies locker room (or thereabouts).

LADIE’S NEWS
Roxy’s Rules With the El Niño coming up, Roxy thinks you need to know the rules for casual water. Casual water is any temporary accumulation of water on the course that is not in the water hazard and is visible before or after the player takes his stance. Dew and frost are not casual water. The rules for relief are found in rule 25–1. Roxy suggests you read this rule in full. To briefly summarize, if the casual water is found “through the green” you may drop, without penalty, within one club length from the nearest point of relief. The nearest point of relief must not be in a hazard or on the putting green. When the ball is dropped it must first strike the course at a spot that avoids the casual water. In other words, if you take relief, then you must take complete relief. If the casual water is in a bunker, the drop must be in the bunker to avoid a penalty. If you want to drop outside the bunker you take a one stroke penalty, and drop keeping the point where the ball originally lay directly between the hole and the spot where the ball is dropped. There is no limit as to how far behind the bunker you can drop. On the putting green you may lift and place the ball without penalty at the nearest point of relief not in a hazard or closer to the hole. The nearest point of relief may be off the putting green. Or if you don’t like any of those choices, don’t play when it’s wet outside. Rule on! If you have any questions, E-mail Roxy at debraeallen@ yahoo.com

As I write this we are busily preparing for the 2016 Toshiba Classic. What an undertaking it has been for this year. Congratulations to Jeff Purser and his staff for the outstanding work they have done to make the event a reality. As for our own Newport Beach Country Club Clubhouse tent it is amazing. I can’t wait to see it full of all our members all out enjoying the tournament. October was definitely a busy month and we all love the Toshiba Classic but boy are we happy to get into the holiday spirit! Aside from Toshiba we have been busy at work preparing to bring you a wonderful Thanksgiving Dinner that we are sure you will enjoy. Please make sure to get your reservation in early as seating is limited and be sure to save room for Chef Jesse’s homemade pumpkin pie. Also this month we unveil our new Sunday Night Bistro Menu. Join us for this fun new night at the club. The new a la carte menu offers wonderful dinner selections for everyone to enjoy.
