Meridian Hills Halloween Events All Club Family Halloween Party

Last month, I dedicated my message to the status of membership in our Club. The conclusion is that we have maintained our membership levels at a rate far better than the national average, but in order to maintain our position as the premier full-service country club of central Indiana, we need to continue to buck the national trend if we want our club to thrive.

Since that message was written, the membership Jack M. Woodside department has received an above average number of Club President inquiries regarding membership. At the last Board of Directors meeting, we approved several plans proposed by the Membership Committee to secure more new members in the club this fall. On Sunday, October 17, 2010 from 11:00am to 2:00pm, we will host a Fall Open House designed to help your friends learn enough about the Club to determine if the Club is a good fit for them and their family. If your friends apply for Tennis or Golf class before December 31, 2010 and are accepted for membership, they will not be responsible for monthly dues until April 1, 2011. They will however still be responsible at the time of acceptance for the initiation fee, the monthly hawk project dues, the quarterly service charge and any other fees they incur in the Club during this period.

We have worked hard to promote membership and ask you to help us continue efforts to maintain the highest integrity of our club, by ensuring that our club remains “By Invitation Only” and by inviting your friends to be a part of our Club. For more information, see page 5.

Jeff and Tigon Dausman welcomed a baby boy, Hudson McGinley Dausman into the world on September 10th. He was 6lbs 15 oz and 21 inches.

He is their third child and first boy. Congratulations!

Since the Newsette was published last month, membership inquiries have been on the rise, which is atypical for this time of year. As we’ve learned more through the membership inquiries, we’ve received feedback that helps position the Club more effectively. Taking all of these things into consideration, the Membership Committee came together with a plan we feel will help secure new members this fall, as opposed to candidates who join a Club in the spring, closer to when they will be able to take advantage of what they love most about the Club- Tennis and Golf.

The first plan of action is to host a Fall Prospective Member Open House on Sunday, October 17th from 11:00am to 2:00pm. The Membership Committee requests your assistance with this event designed to help your friends learn enough about the Club to determine if the Club is a good fit for them and their family. The professional staff is here Jason Challand to highlight their talents and guests will have the opportunity to get a feel for the club Membership Committee atmosphere and enjoy our well known Sunday Brunch. Please begin thinking about those Chairman you would like to invite. If you aren’t able to attend, then feel free to send your guests alone, as there will be plenty of Membership Committee members and volunteers who will ensure your guest has a nice time and feels comfortable.

Board of Directors Candidates The following are the nominations for the Meridian Hills Country Club Board of Directors 2010-11: JEFF A. CRISTEE

Jeff and his wife, Dana, joined Meridian Hills in 2002 with their sons Jackson (19), Sam (17) and Joey (13). After a year in Denver, the family considers Meridian Hills one of the best things about returning to Indianapolis last June.

An active golf member, Jeff served as Junior Golf Chairman from 2004-2007. He enjoys playing golf with his sons at Meridian Hills as well as participating in club events.

Jeff is the Area Vice President for Cisco, Inc. and is responsible for field sales and customer loyalty across the US Commercial Central area. In addition to leading the direct sales teams, Jeff oversees field engineering, marketing, channels and all programs that support the Central area.

Very active in economic development at the state and regional levels, Jeff is the founder and past chairman of the Tailwind Group, a program that identified and assisted high potential start up companies and facilitated their rapid growth. He is also past Chairman of the Technical Advisory Board of Marian College and The Orchard School, and is a graduate of Indiana University.

F. HAYDON HAPAK

Haydon and his wife, Claudia, have been members of Meridian Hills since 2003. They have four children, Jule, a graduate of Marquette University, Frank, a Finance major at Emory University, Bill, a Forestry major at the University of Montana, and Joe, a freshman at Park Tudor.

His parents, Frank and Charlotte Hapak, joined the club in 1958 and he is pleased to carry on the tradition and have his family enjoy the many benefits of membership. Haydon has been very active in both the Golf and Paddle Tennis programs, serving as the Paddle Tennis liaison to the board.

Haydon is a graduate of Park Tudor High School and earned his business degree from The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina. He is the owner of Hogan Transfer and Storage, an agent for Mayflower, located in downtown Indianapolis. Haydon served on the Board of Directors for Mayflower Transit Company for five years and is a member of The Junto of Indianapolis.

KENNETH G. STELLA

Ken and his wife, Cindy, have been members of Meridian Hills for 25 years. They have two adult children, Kevin and Kenya, who grew up enjoying the benefits of Meridian Hills. Kenya, her husband, Steve Cobb, and family are now active members of the Club.

Ken and Cindy, are active in the men and women’s golf programs. Ken serves on the Green Committee and the Planning Committee for the annual Timberman Classic.

Ken received his Bachelor of Science and Masters in Health Administration from Indiana University.

He is a member of the Indiana University Alumni Association and the IU Varsity Club. He has served on the IU Board of Visitors of the School of Public and Environmental Affairs and the IU School of Nursing. He presently serves Purdue University as a board member of the Regenstrief Center for Healthcare Engineering.

Ken is President Emeritus of the Indiana Hospital Association and is a Life Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.

STEPHANIE HOLLOWAY KIRK

Stephanie and her husband, Jeff, have been members at Meridian Hills since graduating from Miami University. Their three children, Mackenzie (9), Danny (7), and Josie (4), attend The Orchard School and are all very active at the Club. Each have enjoyed participating in the tennis, golf, swim, and kids club programs.

Stephanie is a realtor with F.C. Tucker, and Jeff is a partner with Bingham McHale. The Kirk’s look forward to continuing to introduce new members to the Meridian Hills family!

L. ROBERT LOWE, JR.

L. Robert Lowe, Jr. (Bob) and his wife, Nancy, have been members of Meridian Hills Country Club since 1985. Bob has been active within the Club serving as tennis chairman in 1991. Nancy and Bob have passed on the benefits of the Club to their three children and five grandchildren.

Bob is a partner of Bose McKinney & Evans LLP, practicing in the area of estates and wealth transfer planning, business succession planning, and entrepreneur financing. He has been practicing law in Indianapolis since 1967. Previously, he was the founding partner of Lowe Gray Steele & Darko LLP. He concentrates his law practice in the areas of business, construction, estate planning, probate, and estate administration, with a particular focus on serving the needs of all types of privately owned businesses.

He has been active in the economic development of Indianapolis and the Central Indiana regions, and remains active in civic, professional and charitable organizations.

Prior to practicing law, Bob practiced civil engineering for several years and is still a professional engineer. Bob considers himself to be a “Purdue Lawyer.” Since Purdue does not have a law school, he further states that being a Purdue Lawyer is lonesome, so he is looking forward to meeting new members.

MICHAEL R. SEMLER

Mike (Semy) and Holly Semler and their four kids, Henry (13), Ellie (11), Matthew (7) and Scott (5) have been members of MHCC since 1997. The entire family is active in golf, paddle tennis, swim team, fitness and social activities at the club. Mike served on the MHCC Board of Directors from 2007 – 2009, Greens Committee, Long Range Planning and is current Chair of the Social Committee.

Mike is a graduate of North Central High School (1984) and has a finance degree from Purdue University (1989). He is Principal, Senior Vice President of Cassidy Turley, the nation’s leading Commercial Real Estate service provider. Mike is a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church where he serves on the Parish Council, current board member of the Boy Scouts of America (Eagle Scout), graduate of the Stanley K. Lacy Leadership Series (Class XX), graduate of the Indiana Leadership Forum, member of the Penrod Society and the Hundred Club.

Tennis Update

PADDLE TENNIS NEWS With the resurfacing of all 3 courts this year and the tightening of the screens, I am looking forward to another great paddle season. The paddle fee for the year is $100. This includes Tuesday evenings and/or Saturday mornings with balls. I will be available for some lessons before the start of the season to get the new players caught up.

Opening Day Opening Day for Paddle Tennis will be Tuesday, October 19th. You will receive an email to sign up for this event on the Sunday before.

Newcomers and free clinic!

I would advise newcomers to take a quick lesson from the only certified pro in the State before the season begins. I will email newcomers for a few free clinics beginning in October.

Private Lessons: $50 per 45 minutes This is a great way to get a quick start on the season, and get some great exercise in the winter months. The more consistent you are in paddle, the more fun it will be. In order for you to be able to rally, you need to know how the ball reacts to the screens. Participants will learn this much faster if you take some private lessons. The cost will be split if you would like to have a lesson with a buddy.

Men’s Paddle, Tuesday night and Saturday morning: $100 per entire season I will email you a day or two before play to ask if you want to participate. It is important that you show up if you are signed up to play. Unlike tennis, you must have a foursome or it will ruin play for the rest. The first session will be at 5:30pm on Tuesday night, followed by a 6:45pm and a 7:30pm time. Unfortunately, it does not help much to request a time, because it is important that the levels of play are correct for the pairings. Saturday mornings will begin at 8:00am, followed by sessions at 9:15am and 10:30am.

Ladies Paddle & Clinics I hope to increase ladies paddle substantially this year. The best way to accommodate all members is for the ladies to find 3 players who want to have a drill session/clinic together, then I can also book these times for you. We are looking to do a Wednesday ladies group from 5:30-7:00pm and one group during the daytime during the week.

Mixed Doubles Last year we had two mixed doubles event that were extremely successful. We will do this one Friday per month with the possibility of more events if there is a high interest. Our first event will be Friday, October 29th. Ladies, please make your husband’s play with you for the October 29th mixed event, as this will definitely get you hooked on the sport.

Events We would like all players to participate in the tournaments this year. The date for the State tournament is December 4th, and the date for the National tournament is February 18th - 20th.

Golf Update Going Away Reception For Assistant Golf Professional Joe Scott Wednesday, October 13th from 5-7pm Join Joe from 5-7pm in the Men’s Grill to have a cocktail with and help celebrate his 3 years at Meridian Hills and recent acceptance of a medical sales position with global health company, Covidien.

2010 Ole Buddy Results Champions: Dr. Larry Lett and Dr. Rick Steele Runner Up: John Elbin and Chris Pesavento In one of the most heated final matches in recent memory, Lett and Steele were able to stave off the duo of John Elbin and Chris Pesavento. Winning 3 & 1, Lett and Steele both hit their tee shots to the right on Hole #17. Nestled on the back of the green tee box on #18, Steele hit a miraculous punch wedge through the trees and over the right greenside bunker landing just a foot away from the pin for a kick-in birdie.

Congratulations to this year’s winners. We’ll see if they can defend their title in 2011!

Golf Update

Thank you all for your patience during our golf course aerification. We were able to complete almost all of the aerification. The only things remaining are the new greens; I am waiting on them because of the new seedlings that have germinated. At this time, I am afraid that the new plants would not hold up to the heavy sand topdressing that is required to fill the holes. As I continue to evaluate these greens, I am hoping for cooler weather when I will be able to punch the new greens.

In the areas where we can irrigate, the golf course has responded in our favor and is coming back quite nicely. We have put out a lot of seed and fertilizer out over the last couple of weeks, and are seeing pretty good results. I’ve already seen new seedling come up in almost all the area’s. These areas will continue to germinate over the next couple of weeks, and of course rain and cooler weather would help this process greatly.

The 50’ driving range net on the north side on the driving range has been installed. Once the net has a chance to stretch enough to touch the ground, I will be removing the black silt fence at the bottom. This silt fence is there to keep golf balls from rolling under the net and into the bushes. Again, thank you all for your patience during the installation. The range tee benefitted greatly from the one week synthetic tee usage. I was able to reseed the entire tee, and keep the moisture level high enough to get good germination. I will continue to have one teeing station set for the remainder of the year. This should allow us to continue to grow in the east side of the tee for next season. I will be looking at some time in October to go back to the synthetic for the rest of the season.
