FROM THE COMMODORE commodore@sfyc.org The SFYC is having a great year! While several cautioned me how much work it was to serve as Commodore, no one informed how much fun it can be when you have such a dedicated team “on watch” keeping things running so smoothly. It has been very rewarding to be at the helm of our Wheelhouse. My sincere thanks to everyone! A few of the Wheelhouse accomplishments Facilities Planning Committee: As you may have seen in the Bow Wave, The SFYC submitted the application on the proposed Regatta Center to the City of Belvedere on August 3. We continue to work closely with our architects to ensure that we stay on track with our application under the leadership of Vice Commodore Ed Lynch – who is doing a great job! Finance Committee: I am pleased to report that we are having a very good year from a financial perspective. The Committee is working diligently on the 2016 budget and is very focused on the financial planning for the proposed Regatta Center. Cruise Committee: The team has truly raised the bar this year with some very creative additions to the cruising schedule and opportunities to include members and friends who do not have a boat. Membership Committee: In addition to ensuring that candidates meet the qualifications of SFYC membership, the Committee has planned the second annual Open House on October 11. This event provides an opportunity for members to bring family and friends to The SFYC who would like to more about our club. Harbor Committee: The dry storage dock is moving along quickly thanks to the efforts of Roly Rosic and his team. Chris Lacey and Harbor Master Kevin Tentis are making sure that we stay on track and on budget on this project. The feedback from members has been very positive! And, the much needed improvement to the Youth dock was installed just in time for the Opti PCCs. House Committee: I hope that you have noticed the burgee display of International Council of Yacht Club members in the clearstory. This showcases our relationship with these prestigious clubs. What is less transparent, is the extensive work that has been completed to revise our House Rules and Regulations. These are available on the SFYC website. Race Council and Race Development Committee: In addition to running our legacy race program and delivering great racing, the Race Council has worked very diligently with the Race Development Committee on the Audi Melges 20 PCCs and World Championship under the leadership of Regatta Chair Angie Olson. Youth Sailing: On September 19 & 20, The SFYC hosted the Opti PCCs. With 89 boats, this is a significant event that required extensive planning on and off the water. The Organizing Committee did a wonderful job. Thanks to the expertise of Director of Sailing Forrest Gay, we were able to ensure a safe regatta. Entertainment Committee: We truly have a great group organizing very creative ways to entertain us. The Chili Challenge was a huge success with the competition exceeding my expectations. Our float in the Labor Day Parade was very cute and it was great to see so many members participating. Country Western Night was a hoot with everyone kickin’ up their heels. With such a talented team, I am anxiously awaiting what I’m confident will be a spectacular Commodore’s Ball! Auxiliary: This dynamic group continues to contribute so much to our club. To acknowledge all of their efforts, I hope you will mark your calendar to decorate your boat in time to make this one of the best ever Get Lit Harbor Lighting events. A summer to remember! In addition to all of the fun at The SFYC, I have had the opportunity to participate in a few other events. I was proud to represent the club at the Corinthian Cup at the Annapolis Yacht Club and to welcome the US Olympic 470 team to The SFYC. I also enjoyed the StFYC Women’s Cruise as a guest of Commodore Svendsen’s wife Nancy, where I proudly participated in the Colors Ceremony.

his summer, we welcomed Doug Finley aboard Sea Jay, and for two months we sailed 1,150 miles and visited 50 different locations. Exploring and scouting out new anchorages was a highlight of our adventures, and southeast Alaska afforded a plethora of opportunities, especially on the lesser-traveled, Pacific side of the island chain. The ideal anchorages were small hurricane holes where we were able to enjoy peaceful afternoons and evenings, protected from sea swells and stiff winds. Entrance Cove at the northwest end of the El Capitan Passage was one such place, but perhaps most memorable was Puffin Bay on the Pacific side of Baranoff Island. Fjord-like, it sits at right angles to the main inlet, and you can see and hear the swells breaking on the rocks outside the entrance. There was room for several boats to enjoy the calm waters, and shorelines interesting enough to intrigue the curious kayaker. The next anchorage could only be found with proper navigational equipment and, from the outside, looked most dangerous and uninviting. The entrance to the aptly named Renee’s Terror was boiling with sea foam. After approaching from the

south and crossing that turbulent doormat, we made a nearly 100-degree turn around the boulder shore. Inside we found the equally aptly named Renee’s Relief anchorage, a still-water cove perfect for kayaking and a quiet dinner. After experiencing unusually fair and weather as we headed north along the Gulf of Alaska and a smooth passage across Sumner Strait, more typical weather returned in the latter part of our journey. A solid week of rain, rain and more rain reminded us why Southeast Alaska had earned the designation of rainforest! We didn’t let the roar of pouring rain ruin our experience – in fact it added to wonders. At one point, while at anchor at Ford’s Terror, we realized the thunder we thought we were hearing was actually a landslide. A section of hill had broken free and was laying at the base. While we were undaunted by the rain, it seemed to be causing power storage problems. Even on long travel days, the alternator didn’t seem to be charging the system to capacity. We originally credited it to lack of sunshine but, on the off chance it might help, Steve cleaned the battery terminals and discovered that we were actually all charged up – proving that housekeeping does pay off. With Doug on his way home, Sea Jay headed south to explore the west side of Vancouver Island.

RACE NEWS
Forrest Gay, Director of Sailing race@sfyc.org
2015 SFYC Club Championship Series he Club Championship Series included seven races after a shutout with no wind on the first day of the series. The racing in both Spinnaker and Non-spinnaker fleets was very tight, with only five points separating the top three boats in each fleet. Participation was slightly up over the numbers for the past five years, with more than 40 boats racing in at least one race in the series. In the Spinnaker Fleet, it was S/C Bill Melbostad's JR that came out on top, over Thomas Furlong's Elusive and Tim Russell's Painkiller. The top two boats both won two races each out of the series of seven. In the Non-spinnaker Fleet, the story was very similar. Richard and Mark Pierce's Fjaer won two races to win the series by two points over Glenn Isaacson's Q and Carl Flemming's Topgallant. The SFYC Club Championship Series is an annual series of five days of racing over the summer season and is open to all SFYC boats free of charge. Food and beverages were generously donated by Whole Foods, Martin Ray Winery, Dry Creek Vineyards, and Trumer Pils Brewery. Any and all keelboats may enter, so make sure to put the Club Series on your calendar for 2016!
T
Round the Island Race his year’s Round the Island Regatta is Saturday, October 24. This race is a long-standing SFYC tradition that goes back more than 50 years. Formerly part of the Club Series, the Round the Island Regatta has been a stand-alone event now for several years with Jay Hooker as PRO. The race starts in Belvedere Cove and rounds Treasure Island and Southampton Shoal to port. The finish is just off of the Corinthian Yacht Club. The dismantling of the old eastern span of the Bay Bridge has made the course description particularly challenging for Jay. We look forward to this year’s regatta and encourage all SFYC racers to participate.

SFYC members gathered on September 10 to welcome them and to get a close look at their very complex boat. Dave Ullman gave us a brief explanation of how he came to be their coach and highlighted Annie’s and Briana’s achievements in the 470, including their gold medal victory at the Olympic test event in Rio. Annie and Briana also gave us a summary of their impressive sailing accomplishments and their extensive training and race schedules. It was truly inspiring to witness their commitment to sailing and to winning Olympic gold. The SFYC is proud to support the team!

RACE NEWS commodore@sfyc.org
Thrilling Corinthian Cup Racing! he Annapolis Yacht Club hosted The SFYC on August 29 & 30 for the 6th annual Corinthian Cup. This year’s event included an Open Division and a Youth Division, match–racing J22s. At the end of racing on Saturday, AYC was up by two points (6 – 4). Team SFYC gathered for a spirited debrief to provide encouragement to our youth team. That teamwork clearly paid off, as Team SFYC won both races in the first Flight on Sunday to tie the score. The excitement continued as each club scored a point in Flights 7 and 8. The AYC won both races in Flight 9, winning honors for 2015. While the final score was AYC 10 and SFYC 8, the results do not reflect the incredibly competitive racing with many lead changes. The delta was less than three seconds in 6 of 18 races. The cover shot reflects just how tight a finish was, with the SFYC Open Division team (red spinnaker) crossing the finish line to score a point. Jack Barton was the SFYC skipper in the Open Division. Crew members included Chloe Holder, Jim Barton, and Eric Baumhoff. The team was successful in forcing at least six fouls on AYC. In Flight 7, SFYC rounded about five feet behind AYC the second time around the top mark. AYC left just enough room for Jack to stick the bow into the gap, and quickly establish an overlap to force a

windward/leeward penalty on AYC. Before the AYC realized it; SFYC carved back above them, gybed onto starboard and forced another penalty. Sammy Shea was The SFYC skipper in the Youth Division with Chloe Bohannon, Will Martens and Noble Reynoso as crew. With about 200 yards to the finish in the last race, SFYC was nearly three boat lengths behind AYC. Sammy never gave up and pushed the team to come in hot. It was not until the Joint Committee raised the yellow flag that anyone knew that AYC won the race – inches from forcing a tiebreaker. Since the inception of this event, the “home” team has won. While history repeats itself, we should all be very proud of the 2015 SFYC Corinthian Cup team! Special thanks to Bartz Schneider and Jeff Holder for serving on the Joint Committee, and to Director of Sailing Forrest Gay for all of his support on and off the water.

Cruising Club – Come Join Us rom a peaceful and relaxing week on the Delta, to an action-packed afternoon on the Cove, to sunset cruising and paddle board adventures, and a trip down to Half Moon Bay, it was a summer filled with camaraderie for the Cruising Fleet! In July, we continued our tradition of slowing it down on our cruise to the Delta YC. The cruising life is as much about the journey as the destination, so we stopped at the Pittsburg Marina to stroll the streets of the eclectic town and enjoy a leisurely dinner at La Veranda before continuing on our way. Once we made our way up to our destination, serious relaxation was only occasionally interrupted by explorations to find the next great lunch spot, belting out a few tunes with our one-man-band, and rousing, free-for-alls of “Left, Right, Center” gambling! Thanks to David Cobb and Mike Mellon for leading this cruise. In August, we traded relaxation for a rousing Family Day in the Cove. We rallied 27 boats, filled with family and friends, for a day of swimming, dinghy sailing, water skiing, paddleboarding and swinging off halyards. All had a wonderful time together. USODA Girls Nationals By Sarah Young ecently, I went to the USODA Optimist Nationals at the Pensacola Yacht Club, in Pensacola, Florida, one of the biggest Opti regattas in the US. I arrived one day before Girls’ Nationals to get some practice on Pensacola Bay before racing. The day of Girls’ Nationals, I was very excited. This was my second year racing Girls’ Nationals, the first year being in Southern California at the California Yacht Club. Last year I got 35th overall, and my goal this year was top 20. I really like Girls’ Nationals because girls play fair, much more so than boys. Guys are more likely to deny a foul and go to the protest room before admitting they are wrong, unlike girls, who mostly just do their circles! We had a long postponement in the morning waiting for the ocean breeze to come in but once it did the conditions were perfect for me - a consistent 15-18 knots with rolling chop, much like San Francisco Bay most of the time. My first race, I got 16th, and was very happy to be exceeding my goal already! In the second race, the wind picked up to 20+ knots, which are great conditions for me. I finished 5th, and even got to go by the measurement boat! (Top 10 finishers go to the measurement boat to get checked if their sails and boat are legal.) In the last race, I got 8th after catching a right shift, and a big starboard lift. I finished the regatta 6th overall out of 82 sailors! I was extremely happy with my results, finishing among the top girl Opti sailors in the US!

THE PROPOSED SFYC REGATTA CENTER
he BSA architects and the Facilities Planning Committee are currently working with the City of Belvedere (COB) Planning Staff to provide additional information requested by the COB. Once the COB deems the application is complete, the COB will prepare the project staff report and the project will then be sent to the Planning Commission and scheduled for a public meeting. It is anticipated that this project could be before the Planning Commission by year-end but the first step is getting the application completed and accepted. Once the planning process is nearing completion and any changes have been incorporated, the project will undergo a cost analysis. Once this work has been completed, it is the intent of the SFYC Board to present the completed package, cost analysis and feasibility report to the membership. Timing of that meeting will be determined by the planning process which is unknown at this time. This is an exciting project for the club and the community. Your support is appreciated!
