T h e Bulletin
Magazine of The San Francisco Yacht Club
FROM THE COMMODORE commodore@sfyc.org
s I write this article, I’m sitting on our charter boat in beautiful Port Sidney, British Columbia, reflecting on how fortunate I am to be a member and Commodore of The San Francisco Yacht Club. As Commodore, you see a perspective of The Club that prompts you to ask, “what makes our club what it is today?” To me, the answer is simple. It's the members! We can have the best location in the world, the best food and drink, the best racing and youth programs, and the best staff…but at the end of the day, none of that matters without dedicated and involved membership. In essence, one drives the other, but the basis of any great private club is the membership. In my humble opinion, ours is world-class. The combination of our dedicated and involved committee members and volunteers, and our diverse and wildly talented membership certainly is a recipe for success. In this day and age where conflict seems to rule every facet of our lives, The SFYC provides a unique escape. It’s a place where a day sail with friends, a club race, or simply sitting on the deck can put the world at bay. We are a member-driven club and, as with any groups with a great depth and breadth of varied expertise, opinions can be varied and passionately held. What’s important is to find the balance that accommodates the entire membership without sacrificing our core goals of promoting boating, racing and all things water-related. Our club is run by our top staff and Board of Directors who are continually seeking ways to improve the overall club experience. Sometimes a little tweak here and there will do the trick, but sometimes we need to really dig in and work hard to drive changes that will benefit The Club for years to come. I can think of nothing bigger than the new proposed Regatta Center. The replacement of the Cove House was identified as a key project in 2009 under the leadership of S/C Kyle Elliott. At that time, the Board of Directors identified several capital projects and other needed changes around The Club, including: the harbor dredge (completed in 2009), the rebuild of the harbor (completed in 2013), resurfacing of the dry dock (completed in 2016) and numerous other projects in and around The Club. The Cove House is now on the front burner, and we are heading to the Belvedere Planning Commission in late October. If you’ve built a new building, you know the lengthy process involved in taking a conceptual idea and bringing it to reality. After all the input and decisions are made, we will have the ultimate decision to move forward with building it. What is a very positive sign is the input and buy in from the membership and various Board members that have supported this project over several years. I hope to share good news with the membership by the end of the year. While we’re looking ahead to the development of the Regatta Center, it’s also important to reflect on our past. While the world around us is evolving, it’s important to make sure we promote the very ideas that have made our club what it is over the last 148 years. Vice Commodore Jerry Eaton, along with several Staff Commodores and members, have evaluated our Club bylaws and structure to compare The SFYC to several similar yacht clubs. This “stress test” provided the group with a great perspective on how our club operates. The final result is minor changes to bylaw amendments, and a recommendation to establish a long-range planning committee that will help the Board of Directors in making decisions that have a long-term impact on The Club. I’m going back to enjoying the Commodore's Cruise. Your club is here for your enjoyment. Use it!

HARBOR
New Cubbies and Counter Tops at the Youth Dock s part of our ongoing effort to upgrade our Harbor Facilities, we installed new cubbies at the Youth dock. In addition to giving our up-and-coming young sailors a place to store their gear while sailing, they'll help keep our docks orderly and neat.

We also replaced the old aluminum railing with wood that matches the rest of the dry dock, and installed countertops just south of the 200 dock that mirrors that on the Corinthian deck. Attention All Racing Members!
Harbor Committee is accepting applications for 2017 racing exemption slips in both the harbor and the dry dock. Applications can be sent to Harbor Master Kevin Tentis at harbor@sfyc.org. Applications should include: a letter of interest; a racing resume for the 2015 and 2016 seasons; and an intended racing schedule for the 2017 season. Applications are due by 5:00 p.m. on October 28.
SCHOLARSHIP
Continued Support hanks to the generous support of members, The San Francisco Yacht Club’s scholarship program continues to support its employees. In some cases, we have made multi-year commitments, based on academic achievement. The program is open to all employees and their dependents to allow them to achieve the lifelong benefit of higher education and professional or technical training. 10,000 Degrees remains our vital partner in providing the administration, outreach, counseling and mentoring needed to ensure the success of the program. As you consider year-end charitable contributions, we ask for your support. All donations are tax deductible, and payment can be made by check or credit card directly to 10,000 Degrees. Brochures are available at the front office, if you’d like more information. On behalf of the Scholarship Committee, thank you for your support.

t’s been an eventful summer cruising season, and it was great to see so many members out on the water! The camaraderie continues into the end of the year, and we hope you’ll come along for the fun. Next up: Tinsley Island Five Star Cruise on September 30 through October 2, Coastal Excursion to Half Moon Bay (and Safety at Sea Mini Course) on October 15-16, a cruise over to the newly renovated Richmond YC on November 11-12 and our Lighted Boat Parade on December 17. You can check out the cruising tab or calendar on the website for more details, and sign up online or at the front desk. Here’s a recap of what we’ve been up to over the past couple of months… Delta YC Cruise: Our always popular cruise to the Delta YC was a great week of fun in the sun with family and friends from the Corinthian YC. A margarita party, group dinners, live music, playing with boats, cruises to other islands, and lots of good friendship were highlights of the trip. Thank you to Mike Mellon and P/P Mimi and Jim Cornelius for leading the cruise. Family Fun Day in the Cove: Many families and friends rafted up for fun afternoon of socializing, swimming and tubing (and, of course, Bloody Marys) in the wonderful cove right off our club! We had a great day hanging out on the water. Thanks to Ben Kilgore for leading the cruise and getting us all together! San Francisco Fest Cruise: Thank you S/C Suzie and Bryan Moore for introducing a new event to our lineup – a cruise to McCovey Cove to listen to great classic rock bands…the Dobbie Brothers, Journey, Santana and Steve Miller. This was our first unscheduled “pop up” cruise, as it wasn’t on the calendar in advance. But a bunch of us decided to go at the last minute, and spread the word. As always, it was great fun with friends, libations and food. The Moores closed down the concert at 11:00, a fitting end to S/C Suzie’s birthday! Marin YC Cruise: Several boats and a few black-toppers made it to a warm and lovely dinner at the Marin YC, where we also celebrated Barbara Thomas’ birthday. This is a great cruise on the Marin Riviera, right in our back yard. We hope you’ll check out the calendar of upcoming cruising and sign up to join us. Cheers!

hen the Inverness Yacht Club hosted the 110 Nationals on Tomales Bay, August 2-5, Bill Barton and crew Chris Raney finished second overall racing Bill’s Smart Shoes. They lost by just one point to Rhode Islanders, Maggie and Tom Craig. Up the final beat of race seven, the SFYC team appeared to have first place locked-up, before a right shift with pressure in the final two hundred yards catapulted the Craig team from fourth to first. Though Barton and Raney finished second in the last race, the Rhode Islanders prevailed by a point. Thanks to Forrest Gay, who did an excellent job as PRO in very shifty and challenging conditions, and to the many volunteers who helped at the Inverness YC, including SFYC’s Anne and Hal McCormack.

his year’s Round the Island Regatta is Saturday, October 29. This race is a long-standing SFYC tradition that goes back more than 50 years. Formerly part of the Club Series, the Round the Island Regatta has been a stand-alone event now for several years with Jay Hooker as PRO. The race starts in Belvedere Cove and rounds Treasure Island and the Southampton Shoal Buoy to port. The finish is just off of the Corinthian Yacht Club. We look forward to this year’s regatta and encourage all SFYC racers to participate.

Steve and Ginger Mason steve@seajay.org
his year, we’re cruising Sea Jay in Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands in lieu of our usual northerly destinations. Along the way, we’ve made some interesting discoveries in our ports-ofcall. Cruisers know it’s not often that you find facilities on par with what we have at the SFYC. So our expectations were happily exceeded as we secured a slip at Bowen Island's Snug Cove (Union Steamship Marin Resort). CCA members receive a substantial discount on moorings, the laundry facilities are clean and less expensive than most, and you get a 10-minute shower of hot, full-stream water for one dollar. It was quite a departure from the low-flow showers of Marin County! There’s a sweet community with restaurants and two markets (one organic), and hiking trails around a lake or up to the hilltops. From there, we continued our sailing south into Washington State waters. We recommend visiting La Conner, although it’s a challenge to get there. The channel is shallow and the currents swift, so it’s nice if there’s a fellow boater present when you tie up at the guest dock. Once ashore, you won’t find national chain stores, only home-grown businesses are allowed to do business there. Calico Corner is a bakery you will never forget – one sticky bun or cinnamon roll will fill you up for the day. The Port of Everett is normally missed, since it’s miles from town and points of interest. This may all change with harbor redevelopment plans underway. The old Weyerhaeuser corporate office building is being relocated and will soon become a center of attraction. The local brew-pub is quite popular but, with the miles of shallow waterways and funny currents, it’s questionable if these attractions will be enough to make it a popular destination for boaters. Tricky currents followed us south to our next port-of-call, Poulsbo. One evening, a music festival on the streets drew people from all around the area to dance and listen to different bands. By the next morning, all was back to normal. City Market (think Costco’s size with Whole Foods’ quality) was good for provisioning, but don't depend on local transit to get there (local cab service is reliable). The furthest south point in this leg of our journey was Gig Harbor. The town has instituted a town loop trolley service – senior citizens ride for free and it is a nice way to get to the museum and stores. One evening they had a concert on a lawn not far from the city pier where we were tied up. The listening distance from the boat was just perfect. On our way to the Seattle Yacht Club, between Lake Union and Lake Washington, we had our first lock experience. The railroad bridge didn't open because a train was due, so we waited with many

other boats. Fenders were everywhere and plenty of lines were at-the-ready. We were talked through what to do and made the transit without incident. The remaining three auto bridges opened upon request (it does give one a sense of power thinking of all those cars that have to stop and wait for our passage). The people at the yacht club were all very nice. The harbor is shallow and filled with fish tank grass, so it felt as if we were stuck on the bottom when we went to leave, but it was just the “weed effect.” Once we got underway, a few reversals of the prop took care of the clinging debris. After leaving Seattle, anywhere you want to go can take hours at six knots, but we did find one closer option, the Port of Edmonds. The port is wellkept and the showers and toilets were clean and free. As guests, we were given a gift bag containing discount coupons, a local map and gifts from the city. Then they gave us a complementary shuttle ride to town. The town was tidy and as active as a shopping center. Hanging flower baskets at street corners (adopted and maintained by local citizens) were all a-bloom. It was a fortuitous stop that we would suggest to anyone. It had been more than five years since we last visited points of interest in Puget Sound. Though town hopping is not what we normally do, these ports were all quite memorable.

When not actively crewing with friends on The Bay, you may find Kimberly on the Delta on her 18’ Boston Whaler Outrage. Kimberly is proposed by S/C Tad Lacey and seconded by Chris Norwine.
