EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR BROTHERS
A MESSAGE FROM THE
PRESIDENT
2016 Employees of the Year: Jose B. and Jose M. Lucatero, brothers who work in the Greens Department
INVESTING IN PAH
P
AH, undoubtedly, is the most beautiful country club in the Bay Area. We have some of the most spectacular views across the entire Bay. Visitors are amazed at what we enjoy. We’re fortunate to have such a foundation as a start; it’s up to all of us to ensure that it continues to shine. Your Board has been working, in conjunction with Committees, to plan for the future. About a year ago, the Board formed the Long Range Planning Committee to look at the needs of the Club as a whole and begin to plan and prioritize. This year the Board has given direction to the Committees that our first priority is increase member sales and to continue to improve the Member experience. Club Management has been developing policies and procedures as well as training to give Members wonderful service. When Members enjoy the Club, they refer their friends and acquaintances. This is our best source for new members. If you know someone who would be a good Member, please let Dirk Zander, our GM, know so we can introduce them properly to PAH. The Board met with Committee chairs to give input and receive feedback on the Club in each of their areas of responsibility. Soon, we will begin group meetings with Members to hear first-hand their experiences (good and bad) and talk about clubhouse updates, as well as answer questions. Members at a private club have a unique opportunity to provide input and guidance to the future of the place they love. The Board wants your input as we guide the Club into the future. Events, such as the member dinners and wine dinners, have been some of our most recent success stories according to those who’ve attended. I encourage you to sign-up and experience what our staff has designed. The Board believes we have the strongest management team that PAH has had for a while. Our outside sales are moving up and we’re receiving positive feedback from our Members and guests. Our course, thanks to Andrew and his team is in beautiful shape. If you haven’t been to the Club recently for dinner or an event, please come. I know you’ll be pleased. Jackie Yao PAH President
GM REVIEW
“OPT IN” at Palo Alto Hills. Ok, that is a strange way to start an article. However this was a water cooler discussion within the office in January. What exactly does OPT IN mean? Initially, it had to do with a member who said they did not receive emails from the Club for events and activities. When we checked their status, they had selected to Opt Out of club communication a few years back and did not remember. So if you are not receiving information from the Club, it could be that you have selected not to or perhaps your email address changed and we didn’t know. We want Members to have the most up to date information to know what’s going on at the Club. Please let us know if you aren’t receiving PAH emails but want to. What else does OPT IN mean? Your PAH management team is working hard to improve the employee culture with new training and orientations for newer team members. It is our goal that our staff OPT IN to PAH to improve service, morale, expectations and the overall feel of the Club and make PAH something truly special. We want our members, guests and families to feel like they are walking into a second home. As for Members, we want you to OPT IN to make PAH the most vibrant, exciting club on the Peninsula. We have great events coming up, the pool will soon be open, the golf course is in fantastic shape and our food and service have improved tremendously. The Long Range Committee is working hard to develop strategic plans to improve facilities and grounds. The Committees are all working hard to improve all aspects of the Club and the Board is committed to all the Members. So come on up to PAH and bring a friend or someone looking to join a great community. From our team to our family of Members, there is no better place to OPT IN. “There being no place like this place, near this place, then this place must be the place!” See you at the Club Dirk Zander, CCM PALO ALTO H I LL S

MESSAGE FROM THE HANDICAP COMMITTEE
I
have been asked by the Handicap Committee to inform all members, spouses and children of members that everyone is responsible to post all scores when you play at PAH if you have a handicap through the Northern California Golf Association in conjunction with the United States Golf Association. The committee would like the golf staff to work closely with them to assure that everyone who plays, post their scores after playing. So the golf staff will do our best to monitor all rounds played and make sure that all rounds get posted. Please post your scores every time you play to ensure fair competition throughout the Club and Northern California. Mark Sivara Head Golf Professional
THE DUSTIN JOHNSON RULE
P
lease be aware of a recent rule of golf change that is now called the “The Dustin Johnson” rule. Rule 18-2, 18-3, and 20-1 are modified as follows:
Demo Days PXG: Sunday, March 5 TaylorMade: Sunday, March 12 Callaway: Sunday, April 30 Titleist: Saturday, May 13 Check out the new equipment from your favorite vendors! Demo Days on the driving range typically run 10am to 3pm
When a player’s ball lies on the putting green, there is no penalty if the ball or ball-marker is accidentally moved by the player, his partner, his opponent, or any of their caddies or equipment. The moved ball or ballmarker must be replaced as provided in Rules 18-2, 18-3, and 20-1. This Local Rule applies only when the player’s ball or ball-marker lies on the putting green and any movement is accidental. Note: If it is determined that a player’s ball on the putting green was moved as a result of wind, water or some other natural cause such as the effects of gravity, the ball must be played as it lies from its new location. A ballmarker moved in such circumstances is replaced.

GOLF
THROUGH THE GREEN
By Andrew Morgan, Superintendent
W
ith spring well on its way, the greens department is gearing up for aerification. This translates to uneven putting surfaces and disruption to our fairway and teeing surfaces temporarily. Aerification is critical for us to eliminate unwanted thatch in our turf and provide the plant with vital gas exchange and proper oxygen. Think of “thatch” as a layer below the turf that acts like a sponge. If we do not keep this layer at an acceptable depth, it will suck up all of the water and nutrients, allowing minimal uptake for the plant’s roots. This leads to unhealthy turf and an overall poor appearance. When maintaining a high end golf course, aerification is the single most important operation that can be done and is crucial to having a successful maintenance program. Depending on Mother Nature, our greens should take a few weeks to heal until we are back to regular conditions. We have buttoned up the front entrance to the Club and are happy with the results. It’s a much warmer feel and cleaner look when Members and Guests first arrive. It also sets for the tone for the remainder of the property and course. It’s important to have a consistent flow throughout the entire property and our selection of landscape provides that consistency. In fall we will continue to work on first impressions by completing some work on the roadside from Page Mill up to the main entrance. It’s a great feeling to have all our reservoirs filled state wide from this winter’s storm systems. I believe the last 4 years have taught us a lot with regards to conservation and an understanding of how important our water resource is. As we head into the future we will continue to be great stewards for our local environment and explore different pathways to be ready for the next big climatic impact.

WELLNESS
REAL-WORLD BENEFITS OF STRENGTHENING YOUR CORE
T
hink of your core muscles as the sturdy central link in a chain connecting your upper and lower body. Whether you’re hitting a tennis ball or mopping the floor, the necessary motions either originate in your core, or move through it. Weak or inflexible core muscles can impair how well your arms and legs function. A strong core also enhances balance and stability. Thus, it can help prevent falls and injuries during sports or other activities. A strong, flexible core underpins almost everything you do:
EVERYDAY ACTS. Bending to put on shoes or scoop up a package, turning to look behind you, bathing, dressing or simply standing still —mundane actions and daily activities call on your core. ON-THE-JOB TASKS. Lifting, twisting, standing and less obvious tasks, like sitting

well-balanced, resilient core muscles. A regimen of core exercises is often part of the prescription to relieve back pain.
Compete individually or make race, shirt, a meal and awards.
SPORTS. Golfing, tennis, biking, running, swimming and many other athletic activ-
ities are powered by a strong core.
HOUSEWORK AND GARDENING. Bending, lifting, carrying, hammering, reaching overhead — even vacuuming, mopping, and dusting are acts that spring from, or pass through, the core. BALANCE AND STABILITY. Your core stabilizes your body, allowing you to move
in any direction or stand in one spot without losing your balance. Core exercises can lessen your risk of falling.
GOOD POSTURE. Weak core muscles contribute to slouching. Good posture trims your silhouette and projects confidence. More importantly, it lessens wear and tear on the spine and allows you to breathe deeply. Ready to work on your core? Mat Pilates, Pilates Core Fusion and all the yoga classes offered at the Acqua Spa & Fitness Center focus on core strengthening. Additionally, at least a 5-15 minute core segment is incorporated into the TRX, Athletic Training Circuit, Floor Core & More, Total Body Conditioning and some Ride & Sculpt classes.
MEET THE WELLNESS STAFF
A healthy Member is a happy Member! We have an amazing team at the Acqua Spa and Fitness Center that can impact your overall wellness in more ways than one. Whether you’re looking for ways to manage your health or your overall feeling of wellbeing, look no further than your Club. In 2017, we offer a toast to the health, wellness and happiness of our Members and continued success to this year’s favorite providers. Take a look at the impressive list to the right.
