OCTOBER 2017
THE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE — Steve Callaway, President If you have not been on the course in a while, you owe it to yourself to come out and enjoy your course. Amrando Sanchez, our superintendent, and his crew have the course in beautiful shape. It looks amazing and is playing better. The greens are smooth, fast and challenging. Armando is making use of many new pin placements that were not regularly seen over the years. Come out and challenge yourself.
their discovery process, enabled us to welcome record numbers of new members in August. We look forward to continuing this momentum in the months ahead. We need all members to refer potential member candidates to Bob Bodman. Membership sales historically decline during the fall and winter months.
If you find your game not up to the challenge presented by Sequoyah, consider a lesson with our professionals in the Golf Shop. Chris Ford, our Director of Instruction, is building a loyal following of satisfied students. Consider a private lesson or one of the group clinics being offered. The best way to enjoy our course is to improve our games.
The Men’s Championship bracket is still in competition. But there was a noteworthy accomplishment during the qualifying rounds. Larry Ginsburg, battling walking pneumonia, shot his age with an even par 70. This is a great accomplishment for Larry under tournament conditions.
As we head into fall, we are embracing the NFL. Fall Thursday Night Dining will feature a "Pub Night" theme. Come and enjoy the Club and Chef Javier’s offerings of traditional pub food. This casual atmosphere will allow us to enjoy the camaraderie of club life even though the weather is a little cooler and the days a little shorter. Congratulations to Bob Bodman, our Membership Director, and everyone involved with the Membership Development Committee, the Ambassadors, and new member sponsors. August was a record month for new members. We had roughly 20 of the Summer Social Program participants transition to Social members or Golf members. This, coupled with Golf members completing
September is the month we compete for the Club Championship. On the ladies side, Yoshie Masuda continues her brilliant play, winning her fourteenth Club Championship. Diana Tan was runner up. Congratulations to both.
We celebrated the end of summer at Sequoyah with a well-attended family
campout in September. We hosted over one hundred attendees. This was the second campout of the summer. These are favorite events for our families and we thank the golfers for accommodating the on-course sleep over. The zip line experience on the first fairway was a first-time event for the historic Club.
Three last reminders in closing: Sunday, October 29th is our annual Halloween Party for families. This is a big event at Sequoyah. Please make sure to make reservations early so we can plan properly. We look forward to all the children in costumes. Equally important, we have the Annual Meeting on Saturday morning November 11th. This will be followed by the President’s Cup. Lastly, make sure you make your reservations for Thanksgiving Dinner. I know, it’s almost two months away! If you want to guarantee your family’s spot at the table, early reservations are recommended.

WOMEN’S GOLF — Emily Gorin, Captain The 2017 Ladies Club Championship
LOW NET FLIGHT
We have a true champion in our midst! For the 14th time, Yoshie Masuda won our Ladies Club Championship. Yoshie is set to go down in Sequoyah history as she closes-in on Frances Whyte’s record — 16 Club Championships. It took Frances 56 years to win all those Championships between 1929 and 1985. Yoshie’s won 14 Championships in 16 years, so at that pace, she is destined for the Club history books. We celebrate Frances Whyte with a tournament in her honor each November, but I bet ladies in the future will have a Yoshie Masuda tournament where they tell stories about this amazing golfer, and we can say we were there!

Graciously Giving Another Team the Joy – Temporarily The East Bay Team Play League concluded the 2017 season this past month, and though we tickled the top of the leaderboard throughout the summer. In the end, we came in third place overall of the fourteen teams in the league. Our A-team did win first place net, so kudos to our A-players who did us proud. No team’s name is on that perpetual trophy
more than ours, so I guess it’s only fair to give another team a chance to enjoy it in their trophy case — but only until next year when we fully intend to win it back! Many thanks to Team Captain Donna Erickson and her Co-Captain Mirna Wong for their leadership.
TENNIS NEWS Club Tennis Professional, Bill Patton, is closing in on 30 of years experience teaching and coaching. “It has been an amazing time to become part of club life here at Sequoyah, I really enjoy getting to know each one of you, and helping you find your tennis path”, offers Bill. As a USPTA Elite, PTR and MTM certified professional, Coach Patton has a very well rounded tennis education. However, it’s the independent studies that Bill has pursued that bring more depth and richness to the overall experience of learning to perform well on a tennis court. His study of psychology and educational learning theories set him apart from the average tennis professional. “I love it when people are astonished with what they can do, especially as we work together to remove roadblocks to learning.”
Bringing out the best in each other, the 2017 Ladies Club Championship Runner-Up Diana Tan and Winner Yoshie Masuda.
2 OCTOBER 2017
Come out for a private lesson, as that helps Bill to get to know you on court, and help arrange matches, finding your best fit at the Club. Bill has authored eleven books, and travels periodically be Buffet a guest speaker at tennis programs around the country. He is Teamto Play married and has two adult children.
NINER NEWS — Molly Natsues, Secretary "My doctor told me to take my iron everyday and live on greens" This quote definitely speaks to us women! We get the feeling that the winners of the Tournament of Champions (TOC) must have recently bumped up their iron intake and overloaded on greens with these women as the winners: Niners' Champion (Low Gross) – Lisa Bajada First Flight Winner – Nancy Levey Second Flight Winner – Manna Liu Third Flight Winner – Susan Fox Congratulations to all our winners! The four TOC winners will go off to compete at the WNHGA Championships held at Valley Hi Golf Club in Elk Grove on Thursday, October 5th. If any of our winners are unable to attend, then the alternates can go in their place. The Alternatives are as follows: 2nd Flight – Susan Sprague, Third Flight – Esther Thal.
Whether you are a novice player or an aspiring pro, you’ll find plenty of camaraderie and women welcoming you to play the game of golf here at Sequoyah. Wherever your level is, remember that playing good golf is not just about having a perfect swing or buying the latest golf equipment, but consists in capitalizing on opportunities and minimizing mistakes. Get out there before the weather turns nasty and have some fun!

SENIOR NEWS — Mike Erickson Well, the Senior season is wrapping up, but there are still quite a few fun events left — so come on out. We will have the Finale on November 2 with plenty of prizes to be won and some awarded. More next month. We played Ruby Hill this month and we had a great time. Everyone enjoyed this addition and we are doing it again next year. This was their very first Senior Home and Home. The 2018 calendar is shaping up nicely and is about 90% complete. The biggest changes are that Peninsula gave us a time-out for next year, but we added Silverado. At this time, the rest of the schedule looks similar. In 2019, we will have new shirts. The recommendations will require we have a shirt of one color, which should be bold but yet subdued, needs to be cotton and polyester, have stripes that are horizontal and vertical. The shirt committee is trying to find one similar to Joseph's "coat of many colors," but this is difficult as camel hair is scarce. So, anyone wanting this job can sign up to be the Senior Captain. Two or three years of commitment is required. Don't worry, it will be wonderful.

PRO SHOP NEWS — By Brandon Huneke, PGA Professional With the season coming to a close and the course in perfect condition, you know what's coming — Aeration! The aeration of the greens will begin on October 18th. This procedure, although a nuisance to the players, is extremely beneficial to the condition of the golf course. Aeration consists of punching holes in the greens/tees/fairways and filling them with sand/ seed to alleviate compaction and promote oxygen flow through the soil. If the weather is cooperative, full recovery of the greens takes approximately three to four weeks. I have been fortunate to spend some time on the golf course recently and it is in great condition. The greens are the heart of Sequoyah and it is a pleasure to putt on them when they are rolling fast and true. Unfortunately, I have noticed many unrepaired or improperly repaired ball marks on the putting surface. Whenever I am on a putting green, I ensure that I fix my own ball mark and look for others to repair as well. Did you know an unrepaired ball mark on the putting surface does not heal for 25 days and an improperly repaired ball mark takes 38 days to heal? Not repairing a ball mark will cause the inlaying grass to die and leave a depression which will knock putts offline. Repairing your ball mark will smooth the surface and initiate the healing process immediately. Please be aware that repairing a ball mark incorrectly can actually cause more damage than not attempting to repair it at all. Make sure you know how to fix your ball marks and they will heal within 10 days keeping Sequoyah in the best playable and aesthetic shape possible. See below for instructions on how to properly fix a ball mark:
Golf Excellence! Since the last newsletter, there has been some great golf played by some of our members.
PLEASE REPAIR BALL MARKS! Only YOU can prevent ball mark damage!
RIGHT! 1. Close the gap/hole with putter by patting down the ball mark. 2. Insert Green-Save tool on the high side behind ball mark and push the back towrd the center. 3. Do not pull up, twist or lift with the tool. 4. Push both sides of the ball mark into the center. 5. Gently tap the surface down with your putter. 6. Never use loosened turf for repair.
WRONG! Pulling up or lifting on the center or the sides will tear the roots and result in brown spots taking weeks for the surface to heal. Do not pull up or twist with tool. This will only bring sand to the surface and tear the root system.
RIGHT! Insert tool and push back and sides forward to center. No damage to root system. Healing starts immediately.
During the Men’s Club Championship Qualifier, James Reinhart (6.8 index) strung two great rounds together — a 76 followed by a 72! He kept his streak going shooting another 76 the following week at Shinnecock Hills that led to victory in their Member-Guestevent. Awesome, James! Shooting your age is one of the rarest accomplishments in golf and it happened a couple times this month! Everyone knows Lin Boynton, the jokester of SCC. Lin told me that he usually “shoots his temperature,” but in the month of September, he posted 88 — his age — TWICE! Congratulations, Lin and I apologize for not doing a longer write up with more details, but I love how you made me laugh with your body temp comparison. During the Men’s Club Championship Qualifier, Larry Ginsburg had one of the best turn-arounds of the year. Diagnosed with walking pneumonia two weeks earlier, Larry struggled on Day 1 shooting an 86 (16 over par). In general, players need to shoot no more than 20 over par for the two-day event in order to qualify. This meant that Larry would need to have an extraordinary round on Day 2, and he did just that! After birdies on #8 and #9, Larry finished the front nine at two over par. He birdied #12 and #15 to get down to even par, but made bogey on the 16th. After getting up & down for par on #17, Larry was going into #18 at one over. I will let Larry finish this off in his own words below: “David McClain, in the four-ball group behind us, called to me on the 18th tee and asked me when my birthday was. I told David it was September 5 and that I had just turned 70. He said I should make birdie on #18 and shoot my age. A good 7-iron layup left me 126 yards to the flagstick. I was feeling the adrenaline, so hit a 9-iron instead of 8-iron for the uphill shot, wanting to keep the ball below the hole. My ball landed 18 feet right of the hole, leaving me a slightly uphill, right to left putt. I really wanted to make this putt, so took a little longer to read it. I stroked the ball with perfect speed and it turned a cup to the left and found the front right portion of the hole. My fifth birdie gave me a round of even par 70 and enabled me to shoot my age. “I was completely thrilled! What I did not expect was how happy so many of my golf buddies were for me. Fellow Competitors Ces Butner and Charlie Mazzola each hugged me as did many of the members of the Club when I visited the clubhouse following the round. I started receiving warm notes from other Sequoyah members. Former club champion, Bill Buchanan, a good friend, reminded me that only Vern Waskom had shot his age at 70 along with Bill when he himself was then “only” 68, so this is a rare event. “One of my goals was to shoot my age. Realistically, I hoped to do so before turning 75, but did not expect it would happen so soon.” That is incredible, Larry, and we are all extremely happy for you in accomplishing such a rare feat!

HOUSE COMMITTEE NEWS — Bob Wright, House Chair GREETINGS FROM THE SCC HOUSE COMMITTEE! With the change in seasons and the current and future changes to the clubhouse, the Board of Directors has asked the House Committee to update the Sequoyah Dress Code and House Rules. First, SCC has always had, and will continue to have, a dress code. We know that society today has become more casual, but we strive to maintain a level of decorum at a cut above the norm. The dress code is an attempt to reflect the higher standards one would expect at a private club, while not being too stuffy. That said, the update to the dress code will more accurately reflect the changes in the clubhouse. The opening of the Fitness Center changes things a bit, but the current guidelines are still valid for adults and children. Pending the release of the updated Dress Code, here is a reminder of the current guidelines.
Golf Course Acceptable Attire GENTLEMEN: Collared shirts worn tucked into trousers; trousers or Ber-
muda shorts (minimum 17” length, belt to hem); regulation golf shoes with soft spikes. Mock T’s are acceptable. LADIES: Tank tops, jeans, cutoffs, jogging shorts, tennis shorts, skin-tight slacks, sneakers or sandals.
Clubhouse Terrace, Dining & Grill Rooms Golf, tennis and casual attire permitted. Casual shirts designed to be worn untucked are allowed.Tank tops, T-shirts, swim attire and jeans (not in good and clean condition) are not permitted. Neither fitness nor bathing attire is allowed in the clubhouse at any time except going to and from the Fitness Center from the side club entrance
doors. Access to the pool should be through the two outside gates, near the lower parking lot or the breezeway adjacent to the pro shop. Note: Club events are casual unless announced otherwise.
