FEBRUARY 2017

THE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE — Steve Callaway, President Fellow Members, We had a large turnout for the first Crab Feed of the season and the Committee Member reception and thank you. The success of our club is dependent on the members supporting Sequoyah financially and with our leadership. Everyone interested is encour-

aged to join a committee. We need your input and valuable contributions. If you have an interest in contributing to the success of Sequoyah, please contact Ken Kelley. Let us know how you would like to volunteer and we welcome your help. The BIG VOTE is due Thursday, February 9th. If you are a Proprietary member and have not received a ballot, please contact the office. Ken or CJ will get you a ballot. We want everyone to vote. This

vote is critical to our club’s future stability and growth potential. The facility amenities we are adding plus the additional programing will allow us to attract additional members. We seek both golf and social members. The key is increasing our monthly dues revenue. This will spread the overhead and operating costs over as many members as possible. We are going through technology upgrades at the Club. This includes emails and phone systems. Director Steve Hart is working closely with management to implement improvements. We understand many members have experienced communication problems related to these upgrades. We hope these issues will disappear in the months ahead. Please, if you encounter any issue, let us know. We cannot fix the situation unless we know the problem. The additional programming includes more dining opportunities at Sequoyah. These are family-focused events with child care available for our younger families. Please see the calendars on pages 5 and 6 for additional dining opportunities at your club in this newsletter. We look forward to seeing you at Sequoyah. The first large tournament of the year is less than three and a half months away. The Men’s Invitational is Thursday – Friday, May 18 – 20, 2017. Please mark your calendar and sign up. This is the best tournament and party of the year. It is your opportunity to show off your club and treat your best friend to a great weekend at Sequoyah CC. If you have questions, please contact Director Marc Cunningham. Make the commitment to come enjoy your club this month. You deserve it.

NINER NEWS — Molly Natsues, Secretary Niner’s Annual Meeting Our new Captain for 2017, Buffy Ross, welcomed the Niners to our Annual Meeting on January 18. Highlights included the: • Presentation of the 2017 Budget • Announcement of five Spring Clinics covering Full Swing, Putting, Short Game, Sand and Uneven Lies — dates TBD • Rules & Etiquette with Lisa Bajada and at least one Rule each month to cover. NOTE: WNGHA has instated a new rule which will allow us to use our cell phones for distance during Team Play and a new “Local Rule” which will incur a NO STROKE penalty if you accidentally touch your ball on the green. Please visit website http://www.wnhga. com/ for more details and stipulations • Handicaps — all scores must be posted. If you only play seven holes, you can still post by using par plus your pops for last two holes. HOWEVER, if you pick up on a hole because you’ve hit your max — you must put a score of what you’d get if played out on that hole. As many of you have experienced in the month of January, winter is here with a

WOMEN’S GOLF — Emily Gorin, Captain The golf course took a shower for the month of January, effectively cancelling the entire month of 18-Holer golf events. Nevertheless, we didn’t let the excuse of wet weather keep us from getting together! The 18-Holers are a social group, so most Tuesdays last month you

could find us enjoying lunch in the Grill Room, and then playing Mexican Train in the Skybar.

We held a special Town Hall luncheon on January 24, where club President Steve Callaway braved our pointed questions about the proposed changes to the bylaws and our club. Steve joked that he was wearing a protective vest under his clothes, but even though emotions run high about our club, we all were very appreciative of Steve making himself available to us, and being so generous with his time and thoughts. Originally a “Beat the President” tournament was to happen before the meeting. Steve hinted his fashion choice for the tournament might include a skort! But again, the course was simply too wet. We look forward to another day to “Beat the President” when it will be better skort weather for Steve!

PRO SHOP NEWS — Continued from Page ONE  Do you look for your ball mark after you hit the green?  Do you check for other ball marks even if your ball does not hit the green?  Do you push in the edges of your ball mark (correct) or do you lift up from the center (incorrect)?  Do you push rather than pull when raking a bunker? These are all areas that we should be attentive to, and if we all do our part, it will make a drastic improvement to course conditions and playability. If you have questions about proper technique, please stop by my office or talk to one of the Pro Shop staff.
