MARCH 2017

THE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE — Steve Callaway, President Success! On behalf of the Board, we thank all of the members who took the time to vote in the February ballot. The by-laws passed with a 90% approval margin and Phase 1 of the facilities improvement project passed by nearly 75%. Club management is working with the City of Oakland to get the permits approved for the scheduled work. Once we have that, we will let the membership know the timing of these improvements. We understand the Club’s operations might appear disorganized and out of sync. This is the pain of change and adjustment. We are correcting or improving a lot of our procedures that became lax or non-existent. Thank you for your patience during this revitalization process. We strive to make Sequoyah a club that every member is proud to belong. We have made some progress in the recent months. Sources of problems and frustrations are being resolved and eliminated. First, the Club’s new website will launch in early March. Members will be able to see up-to-date event calendars, Board minutes, member rosters, club communications, etc. Please login in early March and discover the website’s enhancements and capabilities. You will need a new username and password to access the site, and instructions will be sent out before we “go live.” After the site is launched, we may have some kinks to work out, so please bear with us. Professional photo shoots of the course will take place once the weather

improves. This allows us to properly display our club to prospective members. Also in March, the Club will offer a dining reservation system similar to Open Table. Members will be able to select a specific seating time on our website. Whether you use this new service or the traditional phone call to the office, we encourage and recommend members make reservations. Many of our dining service issues result from a high number of “walk-ins” and simultaneous arrivals. These quickly overwhelm the kitchen staff and lead to delays in service. Members can greatly help the Club by making reservations. Once this is up and operating, members with reservations will be given priority in seating. Walkins will be welcome, but may have to wait to be seated. Enjoying a beverage in the bar will make any wait pass quickly. Due to staff and operational changes, the phone system has undergone quite a bit of reconfiguration. The automated phone tree has been updated. Members can expect a live person to answer the phone during the operating hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. The first to answer will be the office. The Pro Shop staff will serve as backup. If you experience any problems when calling Sequoyah, please let us know. Please keep an eye out every Sunday for the new This Week at Sequoyah digest of events. The Entertainment Committee has worked hard to schedule great dinners and parties for 2017. Please don’t miss out on the fun! We recommend you try the new, popular $2 Taco Tuesday events and the Thursday Family Buffet Dining. Chef Allen is working on alternative themes for the Thursday buffet to keep things interesting.

Lastly, we are excited to announce the return of Sally Otsuka (pronounced OHT-ska) as our catering manager. Sally was with Sequoyah from 1999 – 2005. She built our catering program, but left to start her own wedding business and raise her family. Now that her son is older, Sally is ready to return. We have great expectations and look forward to Sally’s expertise improving both our outside banquet business profitability and execution of member-sponsored events.

Marilyn Morrish! Thank you so much, Marilyn. And, of course, there was coffee with a nip of Bailey’s Irish Cream — thanks to Tamrin Rice! The format was a “Shamble” — everyone playing with their selected Valentine. Each pair from the 20 golfers present, selected the best drive and finished the rest of the hole with their own shots, picking at least two of each Valentine’s drives. Those dressed in RED or PINK received one free pass out of the sand.

There is a $5 entry fee to cover the prizes that will be awarded for the overall lowest gross score and the winners of each of three flights using April 30th indexes. Description: this is a multiround golf tournament that results in one 9-hole score per player. Each round is to be recorded on the Eclectic Scorecard and initialed by a witness. The lowest of your scores for each hole determines your Eclectic score. Must be played on the front nine, Sequoyah CC only. (Pro Shop will provide the official Eclectic Score Card)

WOMEN'S GOLF — Continued from Page THREE Trophy Day is our monthly tournament in which the low-net overall winner and the low-putts winner earn a coveted spot in the Trophy Day play-off in November. The conditions were tough with saturated ground, no roll, long rough, and cart path only, so scores were high! Nevertheless, we were thrilled to be together and play our first Trophy Day of the year. General Meeting and Rules Seminar After golf on Valentine’s Day, we gathered in the beautiful Sequoyah Room for a yummy buffet lunch of pizza, salads, soup and lovely heart-shaped cookies. Rules Chair Alice Kulka gave an informative Rules Seminar on the new local rule which modifies USGA rule 18-2, 18-3, and 20-1. The new rule declares that if you, another player, or equipment accidentally causes your ball to move on the putting green, you can replace it, with no penalty. Alice calls this the klutz rule. Attendees also heard reports from Board members about our healthy budget, opportunities to play fabulous clubs at Open Days, fun upcoming tournaments including the extension of Winter Eclectic due to all the rain, and our Membership Chair announced our newest member Sarah Valentine. Welcome, Sarah!

The Rules are our friend, and so is Rules Chair, Alice Kulka, giving us a Rules Seminar.

PRO SHOP NEWS By Brandon Huneke, PGA Professional

As you could imagine, round activity was way down due to all the storm systems passing through for the month of February. Multiple trees fell and soggy conditions prevailed causing the Upstairs vs. Downstairs event to be rescheduled for March 4th. Hopefully, sunny conditions are right around the corner so you are able to have some fun on the course!

Marvelous Mary! You may know that Mary Schmitz has been our Club Champion twelve times, held several 18-Holer Board positions including Captain, was a Greens Committee member, and served in other capacities at the Club. But for over 30 years, she has also tirelessly and generously supported women’s golf through her work with the Women’s Golf Association of Northern California (WGANC). The WGANC recognized Mary at the Annual Meeting for her 30 years of service, expertise, and outstanding contribution as a course rater. The 224 women in attendance gave Mary a standing ovation, and cheered wildly as Mary accepted a token of appreciation. Congratulations, Mary Schmitz!

I am currently in Huatulco, Mexico with 30 members enjoying high 80s (not my golf score), a beautiful beach, golf course and fabulous company! [See photos on page 5]. If you have not been on one of our club Mexico trips, you should definitely try to plan for it next year. I should know the destination for the 2018 trip in June and will send notification for signing up and trip details. I was hoping to add a bit of course maintenance info to this section of the newsletter, but the wi-fi is too spotty to download the prepared document. What can you do? It’s rough livin’ on the sandy shores of Huatulco. Look for an email regarding proper bunker maintenance when I return.
