From the Commodore Bill Melbostad, Commodore / commodore@sfyc.org

B

y the time you read this, I’ll be nearly three-quarters through my term as Commodore, and grateful for all the support I have enjoyed this year. In previous columns it has been my goal to recognize those contributing to our Club’s success in 2014. Continuing with that theme, I acknowledge our General Manager, Steve DePetro, and his achievements during his tenure at The SFYC. Steve came to our Club with an impressive resume, working for top tier private Clubs in the west. Steve took over as General Manager in fall of 2011, and brought his vast experience in the private club industry to The SFYC; our Members immediately noticed improved service, a happier staff, and increased patronage. One of Steve’s remarkable accomplishments was improving the historically ‘sub-par’ financial performance of the dining operations; its significant loses dragged down The Club’s overall fiscal position, year in, and year out. In 2013, without a compromise of food quality or service, the operations charted new waters in efficiency and profitability. We’re tracking similar year-end results for 2014. The Board of Directors’ unwavering support and confidence in our General Manager is clearly validated by improved overall Member satisfaction, employee contentment, and Club departments’ excellent financial performance. As in every private Club, issues will always be debated and pondered, but I hope it’s unanimous that Steve DePetro has brought much positive change to our Club, and we’re in excellent hands under his leadership. I’m personally grateful for his professionalism, hard work and dedication to The SFYC. It is my pleasure to congratulate SFYC Etchells sailors, Don Jesberg and Jim Cunningham, for their performance at the ultra-competitive, 2014 International Etchells Class World Championships, in Newport, Rhode Island, and hosted by the New York Yacht Club. Jim sailed with SFYC member, Jeff Madrigali, and finished 10th; Don finished 20th in the 95 boat fleet. The SFYC should be proud of these sailors’ achievements in the changeable and challenging conditions on the Narragansett Bay racing venue. Closer to home, another talented SFYC skipper, Shawn Bennett, defends the historic and storied San Francisco Perpetual Challenge Cup, in his J105, Jose Cuervo. On August 9, our team will be meeting a Challenger from Long Beach Yacht Club for a best 3 of 5 match racing series. The San Francisco Perpetual Challenge trophy is the oldest

match-racing trophy in the United States, next to the America’s Cup. The trophy was created by The San Francisco, Corinthian and Encinal Yacht Clubs, and first raced in 1895; 2014 will mark the 103rd competition for the Cup. Not quite with the same ancestry, but significant to The SFYC racing legacy, is the Corinthian Cup, an annual multi-venue match-racing event with the Annapolis Yacht Club. Racing Etchells, The SFYC hosted the inaugural event in 2010, since, the regatta alternated between AYC and The SFYC. 2014 is our year to host the event. The AYC will be coming west August 23 & 24, to defend their title after a close contest last year, with a team of juniors and an open adult team, to be raced in our chartered J22s. At press time, teams representing The SFYC were still being developed. Look for more information in coming Bow waves. Please place these exciting SFYC regattas on your calendars, and come out and support our sailors in our top flight match racing events. Looking at the Club events in August, we have the last Club Series regatta of the season, the Wosser Cup, celebrating and memorializing S/C, Frank “Jake” Wosser’s many contributions to The SFYC. The rescheduled Staff Commodores’ Cup is on August 23. Contact the race office if you’re racing, and still need S/C aboard to qualify for competition. Culminating the last weekend, Labor Day at The Club will heat up with an Endless Summer Surf Party…perhaps I shall finally attempt to paddleboard! 1001 = ? At press time, that is the number of disposable plastic water bottles saved since the installation of our Sailing Center water station. Please continue to help The SFYC go green, and bring your own refillable bottle and use the station. Please leave the cases of Crystal Geyser bottles on the market self. The Ship’s Store has clear reusable bottles with The SFYC logo for sale…store them on your boat, in your locker, or in the car, to keep them handy for refilling, and help us Go Green! Happy summer, and I hope to meet you at The SFYC very soon!

Independence Cup

T

he summer fog, which had been persistent earlier in the week, lifted quickly on July 4th to give the sixteen club series skippers and crew the promise of a great way to celebrate our nation’s independence: Racing sailboats on the Bay, competing to win the coveted Independence Cup with its beautiful handmade English glass trophies. As the fog cleared, the wind picked up to a nice 15-17 knot SW breeze for the noon start of the first race, building to 20+ knots around 1:30pm for the second race. For once the tides cooperated by providing slack water at the start and a moderate, 2.5 kt flood at the end, making for smooth sailing all afternoon. Dave Carrel, PRO for the race, and his race committee crew were warmly welcomed by Bill and Carol Cosgrove aboard Solmate, their lovely Pearson power boat, which they so graciously loaned to The Club for the day since our trusty committee boat, Victory, was in for repairs. Dave invited grilling specialist Greg Arkus, ace rocket launcher Matt Richter and his own son, Quentin, to assist with the annual Hotdogs on the Water Festival, which featured a healthy option of clementines served between the two races. Unfortunately, the latest generation of hotdog launcher failed its operational test so manual tossing and throwing had to suffice, much to the delight of the assembled gulls. While the grilling and tossing was going on, Dave made his assessment of the conditions and chose a twice around 4nm “sausage” course for the first race, starting 0.5 nm west of Point Knox, with the windward mark one mile away off Yellow Bluff and a leeward mark closer in toward Point Knox. Driving the support boat and setting all those marks of the course was Tristan Ruhland ably assisted by Shannon Cantwell.

The Spinnaker Division got away, all clear, on schedule at but the non-spinnaker boats had a short postponement while technical problems with the make-shift flag pole were sorted out. In the Spinnaker Division Commodore Bill Melbostad in his Etchells, JR, added to his collection of bullets with a clear win on corrected time over rising star, Elliott James in his J/105, Roxanne, who took line honors. Richard vonEhrenkrook was close behind in his Cal 20, Can o’Whoopass. For those not flying kites it was a close contest as Jib Martens in his Worth 40, Freedom, beat Glenn Isaacson in Q by a narrow 15 seconds on corrected time. Rich Pearce, just having returned from taking a very respectable 4th place in the IOD World Championships in Norway was third in his IOD, Bolero, about one minute back. After a short break for additional further nourishment of hotdogs and clementines Dave got two more races off for both fleets. This time Dave modified the course, adding a reaching mark near Little Harding, lengthening the total course length to 4.5 nm. Yet again, Commodore Melbostad had another bullet, giving him first place for the day, thus winning the Independence Cup, Spinnaker Division. Elliott James dropped back to 3rd place in the second race, but still took second place for the Independence Cup. Brent Crawford in his beautiful blue Knarr, Fifty-Fifty, moved up from 5th in the first race taking 2nd in the second race thus beating out Richard von Ehrenkrook for 3rd place in the day’s regatta. In the second race Jib Martens again beat out Glenn Isaacson, this time by 43 seconds (corrected) to seal 1st place for the Independence Cup, Non-Spinnaker Division. David James, in his lovely classic Lapworth 36, Leda, who took 4th in the first race, improved to 3rd in the second thus winning third place for the day’s regatta. To complete the festivities of the day, the Woodland’s Fun Awards were given to Brent Crawford’s “Catch of the Day” for his amazing one-handed catch of a hard thrown clementine, and to Ron Roberts on Sea Ghost for having the most patriotically dressed crew two of whom had donned full bodied Stars and Stripes outfits before the racing. Assisting Dave with the Race Committee duties were Bob McDermott, Soren Hoy, Roxanne Fairbairn, and Lisa Turner.

Inaugural Multihull Regatta

The F18s line up for the start, and then take off!

O

n June 14 and 15 SFYC hosted its first multihull regatta. The F18s and Wetas showed up with nine and five boats, respectively, for some great racing on two different venues. PRO Forrest Gay held Saturday’s racing on the Berkeley Circle, where the breeze quickly built to 23+ knots and only one boat finished the third race of the day. The NOR stated that racing on Sunday would be on Knox, with hopefully

easier conditions. The three races on Sunday started on time and were sailed in very flat water in a flood current. Congratulations to Charles Froeb, Kaos vs. Control, for placing first in the F18s with the help of crewmates Jody McCormack (Saturday) and Jim Johnstone (Sunday) Skip McCormack also joined in the fun on Sunday racing with Ben Brown, Eclipse, who finished third in the F18s.

WBRA Regatta

O

n June 21, SFYC hosted the Wooden Boat Racing Association (WBRA), Race 5 and 6 for the Bears, Birds, Folkboats and Knarrs. Vicki Sodaro, PRO, ran the two races on the Berkeley Circle, a change for the WBRA that is used to racing off of Knox for SFYC races. The wind remained strong all day with the committee boat seeing 23 knots by the end of the day. The first three fleets were sent on a long, twice around, eight-mile course, while the fourth fleet was sent once around the course. In the second race, all four fleets and 29 boats enjoyed the shorter, once around, sausage course. Congratulations to Charles Rixford’s Bird boat Widgeon, finishing fourth in the first race and first in the second race. In the Knarr fleet, Knud Wibroe’s Snaps III, finished third in race one and first in the race two and Larry Drew’s Wintersmoon finished seventh in both races. Thank you to all the volunteers that helped to make the WBRA races well run.

Harte-Nunes Regatta

T

he annual Mercury Class HarteNunes Regatta was held on Saturday, June 14. Five races were run on the Raccoon Straight course for the strong seven boat fleet. Conditions were perfect for the Mercury. The big flood tide allowed for some good tactical decisions on both the upwind and downwind legs, lending to tight racing and a close series on points. After five races, it all came down to the last leg, when SFYC member Randy Smith, sailing with John Hayes as crew, passed Dan Simmons only a few boat lengths from the finish line. The pass avoided a three-way tie for first and Randy came out victorious; winning the regatta and leaving the two-way tie for 2nd and 3rd.

S

aturday, June 28 was the third and final day of the new Summer Keel Boat Regatta. The weather was perfect with 15-18 knot breezes and flat water. You couldn't really ask for a nicer day to have a race. The Melges 24, Etchells and J24 fleets showed up and got in three good races. The series trophies were presented on the

race deck, along with beer compliments of sponsor Trumer Pils. The race committee team was led by PRO Jeff Zarwell, and included Kim Bishop, Shawn Davies, Roxanne Fairbairn, Greg Arkus, Darren Rogers, Heather Hostetler, Mark Mayer and Mark Woods.

The SFYC Entertainment and Historical Committees are teaming up to offer two snapshots of SFYC history to collect, gift, frame, or even laminate for placemats! The latter concept works beautifully for The SFYC Clubhouse’s 80th Anniversary, black & white photo. The other poster, each priced at $5, is our advertisement for the Labor Day, Endless Summer 60s Surf Party, on September 1, which was derived from the 1960 Sea Magazine Cover photo, seen on page 19. To promote the $5 poster sales, and to celebrate our 80-year legacy of sailing out of SFYC’s 98 Beach Road location, we will have a special ‘reception table’, when sailors return from the Club Series Races on the afternoons of July 26 and August 23. Annual Giants Cruise

O

to start on assault on Sheboygan Brats. The weather was perfect as just over 50 club members and guests enjoyed every thing about the game (except final score!!). After the game most of us gathered at the South Beach Yacht Club to partake of their warm hospitality. Many thanks to V/C Suzie Moore, R/C Ed Lynch and Board Member Jerry Eaton for joining our cruising fleet for the festivities. After breakfast at the Java Hut at the foot of the A pier we cruised back to Belvedere Cove for lunch on the deck. Another great cruising weekend. Special thanks to Bill Stark for arranging the tickets (and great seats!) and leading the cruise, and Bill Thomas for setting up the dinner at MoMo’s.

ur annual fun cruise to see the Giants play ball was on Saturday, June 14. Most of us cruised to South Beach Harbor on Friday where we had a relaxing afternoon basking in the warm sunshine (Yes in SF no less!) and visiting with fellow cruisers as they arrived. After wine and appetizers on the pier (think dock party), we strolled over to MoMo’s for a special private dinner. The food was perfect and with just over 20 cruisers we had a chance to visit and catch up on cruising things. A special treat was the fireworks display after the game that night. From our berths at the end of the A Dock we had “slip side” seats. The next morning several power shoppers made it into town to return with enough stuff to move the waterlines down appreciably. About noon we wandered over to the AT&T Park

We heard from Marina and Myron Eisenzimmer returning from participation in the BaHaHa aboard their Swan 44, Mykonos. As they tell us in their own words, no transit is problem free

Turtle Bay is Half Way

W

e had an excellent weather window leaving Cabo San Lucas for the Baja Bash so we pulled out sleepily at 6 a.m. With mostly light winds, after 30 hours one of our alternator belts broke. No problem, Mykonos was built with backup systems. Luckily it was not the belt that drives our water pump, and we had a extra alternator belt. We continued on to Turtle Bay where we replaced the belt. All was great until upon entering Turtle Bay we snagged a ton of monster kelp which wrapped around the keel. Scott Harkey, our crew member, dove under the boat and removed the kelp after Kelp problems we anchored. Getting fuel in Turtle Bay is always an adventure, and Enrique did not let us down. He is quite the business guy. He delivers fuels and water and provides rides to the pier. When we called him,

he quickly drove out in his diesel can-filled panga. Having just finished painting the bottom of one of his pangas, his jeans and hands were blue with paint. The rest of the trip to San Refueling in Turtle Bay Diego was mixed. After a few nights sleep in Turtle Bay we anchored in the north Cedros anchorage and the next morning headed to Bahia San Carlos, bashing into 35 knot winds for nearly four hours. Upon our arrival and finally at anchor the wind slowed to 30 knots which made cooking and holding on a challenge. We had the company of three fishing boats and two sailboats also at anchor. Finally the winds lightened up and a few mornings later we crept out and headed home. A day and a half later we arrived in San Diego, and the entire trip took only ten days! Unfortunately, we had to wait two hours at the police dock for an immigration agent, trying not to listen to our growling stomachs anxious for a restaurant dinner. At last we left in the dark and headed to our slip at Sunroad.

The first portrait in the series is of Ron MacAnnan, a resident of Sausalito since 1960. The man who moved Horizon’s Restaurant (formerly the San Francisco Yacht Club) from where it was originally located on land, to where it stands now– above the water. Ron sold the restaurant when he retired and his focus shifted to his 82’ sloop, Pursuit. Easily one of the most

beautiful sailboats in Sausalito, Pursuit is just as unique as its owner and their stories are intertwined. As with all of the portraits in the series, the story of Ron MacAnnan is told in the first person. Life and the world as seen and lived by Ron himself. There will also be the opportunity see a brief excerpt on the film currently in production featuring our own SFYC Member Hank Easom.

Last year, S.F.Y.C. Porsches, Ferraris, Jaguars, Bentleys, Thunderbirds, Corvettes, Pierce Arrows, Austin Healeys and Mercedes, flew custom S.F.Y.C. Land Cruise burgees on their antennas as they voyaged in fine fashion through the Marin countryside. They will ride again this fall. Crews will gather in the morning at the S.F.Y.C. parking lot, engage in car chatter, enjoy a simple breakfast and proceed for an hour or so to a magnificent luncheon. The details are being settled.
