THE SFYC 2014 YACHTSWOMAN OF THE YEAR ANNE McCORMACK
January 2015
FROM THE COMMODORE
O
ur 145th Annual Meeting was a very special evening for The SFYC. Those present witnessed Bill Melbostad’s passion for The SFYC and rewarded him for the great job that he did as the 2014 Commodore with a rousing standing ovation. That evening, the membership approved the addition of S/C Ken Frost to the esteemed list of SFYC Honorary Life Members. Congratulations Ken and thank for your excellent service! It was a very special evening for me as I humbly accepted the honor as the 82nd Commodore of The SFYC. It was also a very special evening for the women members as I am the second woman to hold this coveted position. When I thought about what to say that night, I did not want to come across as self-important or pretentious. I have worked hard and made contributions. Yet, not one of those contributions was accomplished without the support of other members of The SFYC. Instead, I conveyed a few of the lessons I have learned that will guide me over the next year.

Commitment to Excellence Commitment to excellence helps us raise the bar above being good at what we do. To me, it is a question of how we leverage the skills of other members to achieve the level of excellence of our programs expected by The SFYC membership. Do the Right Thing This applies to dealing with the concerns of one member to the membership at large. I will seek to treat every member as I would like to be treated, with compassion and respect, and to clearly understand each of the critical elements of each concern. I will also be disciplined in understanding the consequences of decisions made to ensure that each is made in the best interests of The SFYC membership. TEAMWORK! Clearly, there is only one person at the helm as Commodore. That person is only as successful as the leaders supporting the Commodore. Everybody is for “teamwork,” but what does that really mean? To me, it means working collaboratively to solve a problem or to reach an objective without getting hung-up on ego or rank. It also means striving to be a valued and trusted teammate particularly when there are those that may be skeptical about what we are trying to achieve or how we are trying to achieve it. I am proud of the 2015 leadership team. In addition to my very accomplished Flag Officers, V/C Ed Lynch and R/C Jerry Eaton, I have a diverse and highly qualified group to work with on the Board. And, I am fortunate to have very capable members serving as Committee Chairs and as the Auxiliary Co-President. The team includes: V/C Ed Lynch: Facilities Planning Chair Don Jesberg: Treasurer and Finance Chair Stephanie Stroub: Entertainment Chair Angie Lackey Olson: Race Development Chair Director Stu Reilly: Membership Chair Helen Reilly & Marily Rimmer: Auxiliary Co-Presidents S/C Jim Robinson: 8 Bells Committee Chair
David Cobb: Harbor Chair Director Paul Rosenlund: House Chair Nancy DeMauro: Race Council Chair Patty Young: Youth Sailing Chair S/C Ken Frost: Historical and Artifacts Chair S/C Wendy Miller: Protocol Rich Wideman: Port Captain
The SFYC Leadership Team has been working toward a seamless transition. In total, this represents well over 100 dedicated, smart, and talented individuals that will be working toward maintaining the longstanding excellent reputation of The SFYC programs. In addition, P/P Elizabeth Merrill has agreed to assist me with a new initiative to welcome our new members. I am thankful to General Manager Steve DePetro for his counsel and encouragement over my years as a Flag Officer. I am very fortunate to have Steve’s support and the support of the high caliber SFYC management team. One more extremely valuable teammate is Bryan Moore. I feel very blessed to be able to share the honor of being the 2015 Commodore with Bryan by my side. I am confident that the 2015 team will work collaboratively to achieve excellence and to serve the best interests of The SFYC. So Team SFYC, let’s set our site on a fantastic 2015!

t. FYC Commodore George Dort and 2014 Commodore Bill Melbostad agreed to terms for new San Francisco Cup Declaration of Trust. Commodore Dort presented Commodore Melbostad with a Montblanc pen to commemorate the milestone and good will between the two clubs. The DOT provides for the multi-fleet format used in the 2014 event, with Youth and Woman’s divisions in addition to the open adult divisions. The new format is sure to get more members participating and on the water racing, and give The Cup great relevance for many years to come.

HARBOR TENANTS: WINTER IS COMING!!
2015 Racing Season
That means storms and winds are right around the corner…
By Forrest Gay, Director of Sailing
2
015 is shaping up to be another year of racing excellence at The San Francisco Yacht Club. We have a full regular racing schedule, with the continuance of some new events that were incorporated into the schedule for the 2014 season like an expanding Small Keelboat Series and a Multihull Regatta. The Midnight Moonlight Maritime Marathon was resurrected in 2014 and we hope to see it grow in 2015. The major regatta in 2015 will be the Audi Melges 20 World Championship in late September and early October. This class makes for very exciting racing. The 2014’s North Americans were a successful test for the much larger upcoming World Championship this year. The SFYC Club Championship Series saw good participation in
2014, so please help carry this into 2015. The 2015 Series kicks off with the Rosenblum Regatta on March 14. This series is designed to be “user-friendly,” with easy buy good racing. If you have any questions about registration please call or email the Race Office and Lisa Turner and Forrest Gay will be happy to assist in getting you racing. Along with all the racing that SFYC hosts we have also been continuing our commitment to safety training. More than 70 sailors were certified in ISAF Survival at Sea courses at SFYC in 2014. This year we have scheduled two more sessions, one in the spring and one in the fall. The schedule and signup is available on our website under On the Water>Training.
So remember to check: • Your lines for chaffing • Your shackles for rust and wear • Make sure your fenders are tied and placed properly • Most of all check your jib sheets and sails to make sure they are secure. This is the most dangerous oversight your SFYC Harbor staff has to deal with in storms. When the jib sheets get loose, they cause damage to boats, docks and are life threating to staff and members that try to secure them in already dangerous conditions.
2015 Safety Training at SFYC In 2015 SFYC will be hosting the following classes. Please signup at www.sfyc.org under “On the Water>Training.”
ISAF SEA SURVIVAL MARCH 7-8 AND MARCH 14-15 BASIC NAVIGATION MARCH 9-12 The classes will also be offered in the fall, November 7-15.

The SFYC 2014 Yachtswoman of the Year Anne McCormack

his year's Yachtswoman of the Year, Anne McCormack, has more years on the water than most. Her sailing career began in Bristol, Rhode Island, where she grew up near the water and in a sailing family. She enrolled in the local junior sailing program at the age of ten and went on to become a sailing instructor and began racing with her friends in local events as well as the National Sears Cup and later Adams Cup championship regattas.
for Tom on both Rhodes 19's and Shields, and for Al Finley on his Bear Boat. She later acquired her own Rhodes 19 and continued to compete as skipper. In 1968 she raced in the LA Midwinters, which was quite fortuitous, as it was there at a regatta party that she met Hal, her future husband. She was a good, solid sailor and smart and he was fascinated. They had their first date, a sail naturally, in May of 1970. He was a sailmaker, and would often be gone for weeks racing. She was his first and last girlfriend to understand. Later she would accompany him on deliveries up and down the California Coast. He “was gone,” hook, line and sinker! Not only was Anne smart and determined, but she had gumption.
“.... she raced in the Newport to Bermuda Race during a hurricane … once in Bermuda, she was off in the direction of Europe in the Transatlantic Race! From there she traveled to Norway to race in the International Knarr Championship…”

Anne’s love of sailing took her to many places and eventually to San Francisco. As foredeck crew for her sister, Elizabeth, she had helped her team win several elimination series and reach the Adams Cup finals in 1967. They competed in that event in Rochester, NY, before Anne traveled to join three roommates in San Francisco. Soon afterward she met Tom Martin through a connection in RI, and met her next Adams Cup skipper, Martha MacDougal Martin. For several years at SFYC Anne was foredeck crew for Martha on her Rhodes 19,
At the time when The SFYC had few female members, she joined in order to crew for Martha in the Adams Cup series. Together they would go to three Adams Cup finals. Anne would go on to become the Area G Representative to the Adams Cup for 15 years; often both competing and organizing. One year she reached the finals as skipper. She was a trailblazer, becoming the first woman to sail in the SF Cup in 1970. In 1971 she crewed for Hal in the Congressional Cup in Long Beach; becoming the first woman to crew in that event. One memorable race occurred shortly

after Anne and Hal met, when he found out what she was made of. He invited Anne to race on Commodore Emmett Rixford's yacht, Annie Too, in the Buckner Race up the Marin Coast and back. Nine were aboard for the long race. They made it to Point Reyes and conditions worsened to blowing 50 knots. They passed the Bodega Buoy downwind and the boat rolled, throwing Hal overboard and sending Anne over the lifelines. Luckily he hauled himself back on board using the mainsheet and pushed her back over the lifelines first. Once back onboard, Anne tended to the entire seasick crew doling out Ritz crackers and buckets. In 1972 Anne took three months off from work to do some racing. But not just any racing; she raced in the Newport to Bermuda Race during a hurricane on a 68 foot modern schooner named New World. Anne proved she was tough and undeterred by the weather because once in
they were able to refloat the boat, re-rig it, and race it the next day - to win the regatta. Anne has made a significant contribution to The SFYC Race Program. She was Race Office Administrator for sixteen years. Her title is not indicative of the fact that she ran the place; mentoring race chairs over the years and making the Race Program one of the best in the country. She has been a resource and vast wealth of knowledge for The Club. She is well deserving of the Marianne Mason award for Yachtswoman of the Year.

Bermuda she was soon off in the direction of Europe in the Transatlantic Race. From there she traveled to Norway to race in the International Knarr Championship on a boat competing against Hal, who was crewing for Knud Wibroe. Hal and Anne would return to Rhode Island where they were married July 14, 1973. Honeymooning was a sail around the state. The couple became a lifelong team; racing his Knarr and her Rhodes 19 from 1974-77. In fact, she was crewing on the Knarr while very pregnant when Hal realized it was time for Anne to take a break. Three quarters through their 1977 season their son, Skip, was born. P/P Carol Jesmore recalled seeing our Yachtswoman walking down the dock with a basket one day and thought it odd that she would be taking a lunch packed in a basket to the wet Rhodes 19.... As she drew nearer, Carol was surprised to find a baby inside. While taking time to care for their infant son back in Connecticut the familiar tug of sailing pulled at both Anne and Hal. Anne connected with the local yacht club in Rowayton, where she organized and raced in their Wednesday Night series. But California called and the family returned a year later. From 1978-90 the McCormacks were boatless. But that would not stop them from getting out on the water. They turned to Race Committee work, Hal as PRO and Anne as timer and scorekeeper - a harbinger of things to come. Anne continued to race and went on many deliveries and cruises with Hal. Highlights that they both enjoyed include their three weeks in the South of France, where Hal hired and trained a crew for the 93ft sailboat Diablesse; sailing Diablesse from Guadeloupe through the Panama Canal, with eight year old Skip along; a wonderful cruise from San Diego to Mexico with Wyman and Gay Harris on Safari; and down the California Coast, stopping at a different port every night, on Al Haussener's Josephine. Being boat-less didn't last. In 2004 Anne and Hal began racing a Mercury. It was dubbed Timex by the fleet (“takes a licking but keeps on ticking) for reasons that would become clear. The couple were racing at the Long Beach Midwinters and headed in to avoid a squall when the boat rocked to weather. The water poured in, sinking the boat beneath them and sending it to the bottom. Fortunately it was shallow water, and

am honored to have been asked to take over the Race Council for 2015. I have big shoes to fill following the last several Race Council Chairs, but I am up for the challenge. But of course, without the team to do the hard lifting, the Race Council would not be successful. I am proud to introduce the Race Council for 2015: Jeff Zarwell – PRO Management Tristan Ruhland – Boat Management Alex Rothenberg – Back up Boat Management Madeline Morey - Liaison to RDC Shannon Cantwell – Volunteer Coordinator Tom Roberts – Protests Stephanie Stroub - Trophies Ashley Perrin – Safety Training Anne Scully – Club Series Brent Crawford – Sponsorships I would like to give a special thanks to those Race Council Members from 2014 that are not returning this year. These members are: Larry Drew, Leslie Richter and Bob McDermott. All have made significant contributions over the last several years and will be missed. The incoming RC wishes them well on their new endeavors. And of course, Michelle Farabaugh. Michelle did a fantastic job over the last two years as chair of the Race Council and I am honored to have been on her committee. Michelle made significant contributions and has taken the Race Council to a new level. Under her leadership, the race program continued to grow and increase the professionalism that is seen by our racers. I want to thank Michelle for all her contributions and guidance over the last two years and wish her well in the new year.

early 80 children and their families were eagerly watching as Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived by “sleigh” boat at the SFYC Guest Dock on Sunday, December 7. The occasion was the Annual Santa Brunch organized by the SFYC Auxiliary. Besides photos with Santa, the children enjoyed holiday crafts, cookie decorating, and Chef Reny’s fabulous brunch buffet. Over 220 people attended, and 14 young elves were there to help Santa and the kids. Hats off to Emily Heller, Tinsely Hutson-Wiley and the Auxiliary Board for a magically festive event!

Annual Auxiliary Potluck Luncheon & Planning Session
arily and Helen are writing to you as the newly elected co-presidents of The SFYC Auxiliary. Neither of us could have asked to work with a better partner. The Club as well as the Auxiliary are evolving and though having copresidents is a novel idea for the Auxiliary, it works for 2015. We are all busy with many things and we feel that by job-sharing we can provide experienced leadership to our Board. As a little background, Helen was a part of the Auxiliary Board beginning in 2005 and served as president in 2009. Marily joined the Board in 2011 and served as President last year. We are both honored to be leading the Auxiliary again. It is certainly notable to have Suzie Moore, only the second woman Commodore in The Club's history, lead The SFYC this coming year. It is also significant to have Bryan Moore as our “Honorary Auxiliary Board member. Welcome Bryan!
We were busy in December starting with decorating The Club for the holidays. The new six foot tall nutcrakers and 12 ft. tall Christmas tree made their debut and, along with the everyone's favorite train and Reny's gingerbread houses, The Club was transformed into a magical winter wonderland. Thank you to our band of volunteer elves led by Eugenia Jesberg and Connie Lewis. Next on the calendar was the traditional Children's Santa Brunch. This event is always popular and the rain held off so Santa and Mrs. Claus could safely arrive on their sleigh boat to the delight of all the children. Thanks go to Emily Heller, Tinsley Hutson-Wiley and Santa and Mrs. Claus for all the fun. Next we saw the night Get Lit and the Harbor Lighted. The judging of the lighted boats was headed by our newly elected Commodore Suzie Moore and Rear Commodore Jerry Eaton. Thank you!

We encourage all of you to ‘cruise’ with our fellow members and let us know if you have any fun ideas. As a bit of history, SFYC has an active cruising program which every years visits destinations such as Angel Island, the Delta, Petaluma, Napa, Benicia, Encinal YC, Marin YC, Half Moon Bay, Tomalas Bay, Tinsley Island, South Beach (for the Giants game.) and SFYC. We will continue to visit these destinations this year and also add new destinations and concepts to appeal to a wider audience, such as new members, families, people without boats, younger members, people with limited time, etc. Our goal will be to get you- yes you reading this- out there with us. Please keep tuned as we develop our activities for 2015 by reading the Bow Wave, Bulletin or on line calendar. Better yet, send me you name and we will put you on the Cruising Club distribution list. Our first event will be the Voyagers Dinner at SFYC on February 4. We are also planning on doing the Giants game (South Beach) in the spring, the Delta week long cruise in the summer and the Tinsley Island cruise in the fall. We will be adding many more activities and will publish a calendar shortly. In closing I want to thank Harold Kleiderman and Lisa Klairmont for their excellent and dedicated helming of the Cruising Committee over the last several years. Thank you Harold and Lisa. Come join us on the water!

I
t is hard to believe that 2014 has come and gone so quickly! The San Francisco Yacht Club enjoyed an outstanding year with Bill Melbostad at the helm as Commodore. Bill, along with the Board of Directors, guided The Club through a year that saw member usage continue to increase. A number of special thanks and congratulations are in order. On behalf of the staff, thank you, the membership, for your generous support of the Employee Holiday Fund. It was very much appreciated by our employees. Also, we owe a special thanks to the Auxiliary for its generous contribution to the Employee Holiday Party! Congratulations to employees Jamie Averill in Accounting and George Ramirez in the Galley for be selected as Co-Employees of the Year by the management team. It was a tough decision with so many deserving employees. As we move into the new year, the staff looks forward to helping make 2015 another great year for the membership. See you at The Club, Steve

Erika Woolsey - “Sex on the Reef
D
r. Erika Woolsey has spent the past seven years living in Australia and studying the Great Barrier Reef, with a focus on coral reproduction. Coral animals exhibit unparalleled sexual synchronization: a few nights after the November full moon, they release millions of pink bundles of egg and sperm that drift to the surface in an upside-down blizzard. These events allow coral reefs to replenish their populations and build habitats that support incredible biodiversity. Using gorgeous imagery, Erika will talk about her adventures Down Under and underwater, and show you the wonders of sex on the reef.
Please R.S.V.P. to The SFYC Front Office 435 9133 ext. 10 office@sfyc.org or for your convenience go to www.sfyc.org
These events are free for Members and their guests. Jamie Averill
