T

he Winter Games pass, spring approaches and The SFYC welcomes in the 2014 sailing season. The one-design classes, the Friday Night racers, and the Club Series competitors are getting tuned and psyched up for the competitive season ahead.

FRIENDLY RIVALRY After a successful 2013 San Francisco Cup, led by Junior Staff Commodore Tad Lacey and “Team Perkins” (Chris, Phil and Jon). The SFYC defends the coveted trophy on March 29 and 30. To foster camaraderie and good will with our sister-club across the bay, and to make the event more inclusive The SFYC Board is inviting members from both clubs to attend the regatta dinner in The SFYC main dining room. Come cheer on our sailing team on and off the water! At the time of this writing we are working with the StFYC to expand the event to include individual Youth, Women’s and Flag Officer flights. The racing will take place on the Olympic Circle. Stay tuned for details regarding the racing format and spectator boats. I am grateful that once more Scooter Simmons will be lendinging us his well-tuned J105, Blackhawk, to The Club for the event. ELECTRONIC BULLETIN Starting in March, you willl be able to access The SFYC Bulletin on your phone, tablet, or computer. The Bulletin will be emailed to you in a PDF format in addition to being mailed the hardcopy. It will continue to be available via the website. This is a three month trial period, as we look towards greener methods of distribution. If all goes well, members will then be given the opportunity to opt out of the printed version.

YOUNG and OLD For the third straight year, S/C Kyle Elliott and the Belvedere Cove Foundation will champion the annual Youth Sailing Benefit, April 8, in The SFYC main dining room. Please join this festive evening and take part in the lively auction that will feature items for everyone’s tastes. This fundraiser fuels the excellence of our Youth Sailing program. The sailing program results include four major US Sailing Championship victories for The SFYC Youth since 2012. The Club greatly appreciates the Belvedere Cove Foundation’s stewardship of this fund raiser. Our third Members’ Meeting is March 4. The Flag Officers and Facilities Planning Committee are excited to report the shift toward a more comprehensive, long-range vision, and on the composition of our current membership, overall recent trends, and demographics. The meeting will give members another opportunity to be involved with the planning process or to bring concerns or ideas to our attention. I’m very grateful to our new Membership Chair and Director, Laurence Bekins, who brings a lifetime of experience at The SFYC. Our Club’s future vitality is directly connected to our members and their circles. SFYC members, please invite qualified friends with keen interest in yachting to come experience the welcoming hospitality The SFYC provides. See you at The Club or on the water. Smooth Sailing,

Commodore Bill Melbostad

Dr. Harold Rosenblum owned and successfully raced two boats on the bay, a 38-foot yacht named Buoyant Girl, designed by Myron Spaulding and sailed to defend for SFYC in the 1951 Perpetual Cup. There is a model of the Buoyant Girl in the Commodore’s Room. Harold’s second boat was the 26-foot all-teak Pacific Clipper named Shon Hee built in Hong Kong by Cheoy Lee. In 2012 a trophy was added for the non-spinnaker division.

Happenings in the Harbor UP Racks: Just South of the Youth Docks, you will notice that we have installed three new SUP racks with 42 individual lockable slots. This is in response to the strong interest we’ve had from members wishing to store their SUPs at The Club. If you wish to rent an SUP slot ($17.50/ month) at The Club, please contact Kevin Tentis at the Harbormaster’s Office, 435-4202 or harbor@sfyc.org. He will add your name to the SUP waiting list. Speaking of waiting lists, this typically generates the most confusion for members. There is a list for the dry dock which is running approximately 2-5 years and one for the harbor which has come down from 10+ years, and is currently 8-9 years. When you get near the top 25 of the waiting lists, please be ready for an offer. Kevin sends offers by email. You have three choices: 1) accept the offer 2) take a one-time six month deferral (“strike”) if you aren’t ready to put a boat in the harbor or on the dry dock. 3) Ignore his email and take the “strike” or if you already have a “strike,” then your name will be removed from the list and the slip offered to the next member on the waiting list. To make sure you are being accounted for properly, it is your responsibility to make sure your email is listed correctly with The Club as this is the official form of communication. Also, you can see the waiting lists as they are posted on the sfyc.org website or inside The Club near the bulletin board. You should note that if you accept the offer, you have up to six months to buy your boat, organize your partnership, or get your boat act together.

S

Dock Boxes: We are currently installing boxes at all the harbor slips (except the 30 slips that cannot accommodate boxes). Unless you are in one of the 30 slips that can’t accommodate a box, you will see a charge of $20 per month for the box starting on your April statement. The box isn’t optional and all installed boxes will be charged at $20/ month. If you already have a box on the hard, you may want to consolidate to the box more conveniently located at your slip and save $15 per month in the process. If you have larger items to store, there are larger boxes on the dry dock available to rent for $35 per month. Please contact Kevin Tentis if you wish to rent a box on the dry dock. Temporary Berths: From time to time, temporary berths in the harbor may come available for rent on a month to month basis. If you want to be on the waiting list for a temporary berth, please email harbor@sfyc.org and Kevin will add your name to the temporary waiting list. It helps him to know the size of your boat as the slips tend to vary in size. The seniority of this list is driven by your rank on the permanent berth waiting list. When a slip is taken back by a permanent berth renter, we go by your rank on the permanent berth renter list.

10 • MARCH 2014 THE BULLETIN • www.sfyc.org

Workers: There have been a couple incidents lately of boat workers not following Club rules when on the property working on member boats. The Harbor Committee is now requiring all workers to sign in and out at the Harbormaster’s office when they come onto The SFYC to work on member boats. We have an unusual harbor configuration as it’s one of the only un-secured harbors in the Bay Area. This makes it harder to keep an eye on all the comings and goings of commercial workers. We remind you that members are responsible for the actions of their workers. Please alert your workers, cleaners, riggers, divers, brightworkers, inspectors, etc… to sign in and out. Workers cannot smoke and drink on Club property while working on your boat and should use the restrooms in the Youth Center. We appreciate your compliance in this matter. The Harbor Committee David Cobb, Hank Easom, Charles Froeb (co-chair), Matt Frymier, Christopher Lacey, Ed Lynch, S/C Jim Robinson (co-chair), Steve Stroub

HARBOR TENANTS: WINTER IS HERE!

That means Storms and winds… So remember to check: • • • •

Your lines for chaffing Your shackles for rust and wear Make sure your fenders are tied and placed properly Most of all check your Jib sheets and sails to make sure they are secure. This is the most dangerous oversight your SFYC harbor staff has to deal with in storms. When the Jib sheets get loose, they cause damage to boats, docks and are life threating to staff and members that try to secure them in already dangerous conditions. s The San Francisco Yacht Club's scholarship program enters its sixth year, we want to thank those members who continue to financially support its mission, one of helping our employees and their dependent children realize the benefits of a higher education. We also want to recognize 10,000 Degrees (formerly The Marin Education Fund) for their help in providing the administration, outreach, and counseling needed for a successful program. Four SFYC employees’ children are currently attending

college, aided in part by our member's generosity. Seeing others succeed by helping to facilitate access to a higher education is truly special; paying dividends for both the individual and community for many years to come. Season Has Begun

B

y the time you read this our first event, annual Voyagers' Dinner, will have happened. Make a note to attend this important event next year, kicking off the Cruising Season. Our first cruise-out for 2014 will be the annual cruise to Marin Yacht Club, on March 14-15. Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with your fellow cruisers and our friends at Marin Yacht Club. Special entertainment by the McBride Irish Dancers is scheduled. Sign up online at The Club website. Plans are coming together for the second annual joint SFYC/StFYC Picnic Cruise to Angel Island. Bob Buich has again graciously offered to procure about a million fresh oysters from his secret source. There will also be many other barbecue items, salads, kid food, etc. Bring the children and grandchildren for a fun, easy local boating excursion. Come by boat, ferry, rowboat, paddleboard, kayak or whatever floats to our private picnic site. First come-first served on slips and moorings at Ayala Cove. So get there early and make it a day

(or better yet, come over on Friday and spend the night on a mooring.) Watch the Bow Wave for information on the Cruise to Benicia on May 16-18. In addition to touring the charming and historic town of Benicia, there will be a dinner and party at the Benicia Yacht Club. Two other yacht clubs will be there that weekend and slips are in short supply, so sign up early. Your Cruising Committee has several more local cruises planned for you. See the Cruising Calendar on The Club website, and watch for updates in the Bow Wave. Plans are well under way for the Commodore's International Cruise to the BVI next February. See The SFYC website or call the office for an information packet on this event. Come cruise with us and enjoy using your boat with family and friends. I’m INTERESTED!

Th

he big SFYC cruise event for 2015 will be Commodore’s Cruise in the BVI. We have scheduled the cruise to coincide with Presidents Day week, when many local schools are on “Ski” break. This way, members and their families can trade in their parkas and poles for T-shirts and shorts and join us. While many will want to bareboat, there are great options for those of us who like the luxury of larger boats with crew and chefs, power or sail. The price of the cruise and the charter cost are contingent on the number of members who sign up…so…are you interested? Fill out the information below and send it to or drop it off at the Front Office. You can also call the Front Desk and give them the info on the phone. We’ll email you a packet with more details. The cruise cost will include three parties in the Islands and cruise swag. You will be responsible for booking your transportation, charter, and provisions. More on that soon.

Kame Richards “TIDES AND CURRENTS IN SAN FRANCISCO BAY” SFYC Speakers Series

Wednesday, March 19, 2014 6:30 p.m. Cove House

K

ame Richards is a renowned racer and sail maker and is an expert on the tides of San Francisco Bay, as he sailed the Bay Area waters for many years and studied the tides like few others have. His exceptional presentation and slide show on the tides and currents of San Francisco Bay is not to be missed if you’re serious about sailing, kayaking, SUP or any water sport on the Bay. The talk

is illustrated with slides from NASA's U-2 high altitude reconnaissance aircraft. With these images, Kame illustrates how to locate tide lines and determine which way the water is moving on each side of the tide line. His presentation emphasizes how sailors can apply tide and current knowledge to great advantage – helping racers to be more competitive and cruisers to reach their destinations faster and in more comfort.
