ince my appointment as a Director in 2008, the Board has focused on The Club’s facility, with the goal of meeting the future needs of the Membership’s boating and social activities. The Board has not always agreed on the best direction of developing our facility. Still, The Club’s Membership should be proud of what has been accomplished over the last few years. Our most important asset, the harbor, has been rebuilt; it’s now a great source of Member pride, and serves our on the water needs. Our bar, dining room, galley, and staff office infrastructure have been recently updated, and will not be a concern for many years. That leaves us with development of the Cove House, and the adjacent grounds. The Facilities Planning Committee (FPC), receiving full support of the Board of Directors, has been considering our options to develop a methodical, practical approach to replace the aging and inadequate Cove House, and to create more efficient use of our invaluable land. Our latest planning process has utilized an integral approach, with the goal of improving the entryway, flow patterns, the dry dock facility, and maximizing the potential of our unique property. The development of this project also has included feedback from all the standing committees to determine future program needs of The Club to provide more value to current and prospective members.

with the senior Kilroy winning the event by 15 points. Supporting Cast I’m sure you have all seen some new faces around The Club, and I hope you will warmly welcome the new additions to our staff. First, Nico Zimmerman has been hired as our Food & Beverage Manager, with the goal of continuing to raise the bar of service and the quality of your dining experience at The SFYC. Nico will also be Nico Zimmerman welcome support for our General Manager, Steve DePetro, who unselfishly filled many long shifts during our busiest seasons at The Club. I have already received several positive comments, complementing Nico’s attention to detail, and the improved dining service. We also want to welcome Amanda Ackerman, our new Catering Manager. Amanda succeeds Natalie Watson, who relocated with her family to the central California Coast. We thank Natalie for her years of service and the fantastic events we all enjoyed. Amanda already is working diligently towards Amanda maintaining the quality of our events, and she Ackerman has done an admirable job interfacing into her position, during our most active social time of the year.

Members Matter November 11 is the next member meeting, when the architecture firm, Bull, Stockwell & Allen, who has been working closely with FPC, will present a current scope of the proposed Cove House replacement plan, and development of the adjacent grounds. As this project will affect all Members and their families, we will welcome spouses to participate in the meeting. We strongly encourage you to attend the Member’s Meeting, and be part of charting our course to maintain the excellence of The SFYC facility for future generations.

Our Sensational Schooner I doubt many of you could have missed the lovely schooner, Martha, who graced our harbor during September. The Martha is the oldest existing (and sailing) Flag Ship of The San Francisco Yacht Club. Her construction began in 1907 at Stone’s Boat yard, by order of 1909 SFYC Commodore, JR Hanify. The stately schooner’s exquisite restoration by her operating foundation is as remarkable as the way she sails. After finishing a close second to the smaller, but much newer schooner, Elizabeth Muir, in the Great Schooner Regatta, Martha dominated the competition in the Leukemia Cup’s classic Election season By the time you read this, the Nominating Committee’s (NC) division. My wife Frances and I were lucky enough to join the Martha’s crew for the Leukemia Cup. It was a spectacular sight work will be completed and the 2015 Board slate will be posted. The NC is one of our most important committees, whose mission canvasing the sky, flying the gollywobbler between the spars, is vital to maintaining the balance of The Club’s governance, and and setting a spinnaker off the forward mast. Now she is sailing south to warmer climes; we wish Martha and her crew a great assuring the continuity and effectiveness of the Board of winter in the Sea of Cortez, and look forward to her return to the Directors. he Express 27 fleet spent Labor Day Weekend at The SFYC for their Nationals and enjoyed three days of great racing on the Berkeley Circle with 16 boats participating. Friday started out with very shifty conditions that the race committee was able to keep organized with two changes of course and some quick mark moving. From then on the Berkeley Circle delivered its regular 16-22 knots. The

distance race on Saturday allowed the boats a two-and-a-half hour tour of the central Bay with some exciting reaches. Congratulations to Zachary Anderson’s Motorcycle Irene out of Richmond YC, skippered by Will Paxton, for winning by 11 points with five bullets over seven races. Thanks to SFYC's Robbie Dean for doing an excellent job as PRO, and to all the volunteers who supported the event.

Wosser Cup By Bob McDermott

A

ugust 23 was a busy day on the water for The Club racers. The last of the Club Series events, the Wosser Cup, was followed by the annual Staff Commodores’ Cup. The race for the Wosser Cup was held in the beautiful weather to which we have become accustomed this summer. This regatta honors Frank (“Jake”) Wosser, who was Commodore in 1953-1954 and again in 1969-1970. He was a popular and very talented racing sailor who dominated the IOD Fleet in the Bay for many years. He raced for the Club in many of the SF Cup and Challenge Cup races, as well as other regattas locally and outside of the area. The perpetual trophy was established in 1970, The San Francisco Yacht Club’s centennial year, and was first called the Centennial Cup, but later renamed as the “Frank (‘Jake’) Wosser Centennial Cup”. In her debut as a PRO, Shawn Davies Commodore Melbostad and his crew accept 1st Place from Ruth Wosser selected a four-mile, twice around, sausage course from Knox toward Yellow Bluff, down to Point Stuart and Finish. Given the short course, nice winds and weak current, the first boats got around the track in less than 50 min. In the spinnaker division, nipping Hank Easom’s Yucca by 53 seconds on corrected time, Commodore Bill Melbostad in JR, completed his clean sweep of the series. In third was the ever-present and always competitive Richard vonEhrenkrook on his trusty Cal 20, Can O’Whoopass. In the nonspin division, Jib Martens in Freedom beat out Glenn Isaacson’s Q by 0.01 of a second while Rich and Mark Pearce in Bolero were only 0.14 Two Carl Schumacher designed boats - Q and Spirit enjoy a great day of racing. seconds later in third. The overall 2014 Club Series winner for the Spinnaker Division was Commodore Melbostad with Tim Russell’s Painkiller in second, and Hank Easom’s Yucca in third. For the nonspinnaker boats, another very consistent winner was Glen Isaason’s Q with Mark and Rich Pearce taking second ahead of a tie for third between Jib Martens and David James sailing his Lapworth 36, Leda. Thanks to all the Club skippers and their faithful crew who made this another successful season. Forty-four boats were registered for the season and thirty-six competed in at least one race. We are alway open to new ideas and suggestions as to how we could make this Photos by Leslie Richter Wosser Cup winners important activity even more successful.

Staff Commodores’ Cup By P/P Cissy Kirrane

N

ow in its seventh year, the invitational Staff Commodores' Cup was established by Patrick J. (Pat) Kirrane, Commodore in 1966 & 1967. Pat, a life-long sailor, had two goals for this regatta: "Keep the boys (Staff Commodores) on the water and encourage a day of shared friendship by racing with Club members." All boats must have a Staff Commodore on board, and as our Club series sailors out number Staff Commodores by a wide margin, the real challenge begins long before race day. It's sometimes referred to as the "Staff Commodores' Scramble" as eager skippers go on the hunt. There are invitations going out via midnight emails, endless faxes and early morning telephone calls. Competition is keen. Without a Staff Commodore on board, one cannot join the winners’ circle. The consensus among those who have participated is: "It's just too much fun to miss." Out on the water, our enthusiastic PRO, Shawn Davies selected a five-mile course (Knox-Little Harding-Harding RockLeeward Mark-Little Harding-Finish). While some of the Staff Commodores also crewed during the Wosser Cup, many were picked up from the dock between the two races. With their Staff Commodores on board, the lucky skippers and their crews cruised around the starting area waiting for the gun at 1405 hrs. The racers were treated to a beautiful sail with winds in the 15 – 17 knots range with an JR leading the fleet. ebbing tide.

George Janson on QE3 with S/C Ken Jesmore, DNF (retired mid-race with a broken boom) There was one hugely disappointed skipper (who won third place in the Wosser Cup earlier in the day) who could not find a Staff Commodore. In hopes of improving his chances for 2015, this skipper, very imaginatively, strode among the winners at this year’s awards ceremony pouring champagne. Now he is cleverly devising new strategies. Therapy is not an option. Freshening up his boat...repainting the hull perhaps. (Could one imagine a polka dotted Cal 20?) We all know our wonderful SFYC Staff Commodores are at a premium. Try to book one early for next year! Photos by Leslie Richter

Team SFYC Wins 2014 Corinthian Cup By V/C Suzie Moore 2014 Corinthian Cup Chair

T

he Corinthian Cup is an annual matchracing event between the San Francisco Yacht Club and the Annapolis Yacht Club. For this year’s event, held on August 23 and 24, each team fielded an adult team and a youth team, all sailing in J/22s. The SFYC adult team, skippered by Shawn Bennett, had a particularly strong showing, winning each of their seven matches. The youth team, skippered by Jack Barton, had a great start on Saturday, winning their first match, but then lost their next four matches. On Sunday the SFYC youth made a spectacular comeback, winning their sixth match by a margin of just four seconds after completing a penalty turn. They then secured the Cup with a victory by a very wide margin in their seventh and final match. At the end of racing on Sunday,

SFYC was the first club to win the required 10 matches to win the 2014 Corinthian Cup. Bennett’s adult team included Melissa Purdy Feagin, Tom Purdy, and Nick Gibbens on Saturday and Jon Perkins on Sunday. Barton’s youth team included Alex Moody, Sammy Shea and Chloe Holder. It was very exciting when Chloe was added to the team on the eve of the event when the crew ‘made weight.’ The SFYC members of the Joint Committee were Jeff Cusack and Bartz Schneider. Richmond Yacht Club member Vickie Gilmour was the ‘independent referee’ on the Joint Committee. Chief Umpire Grant Baldwin assembled the team of six umpires. he conditions proved to be perfect for this year’s Great San Francisco Schooner Race. There were eleven boats in two divisions, Gaff and Marconi, competing in the Bay-tour pursuit race. Boats started their pursuit of first place between 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 pm. The

course took the schooners from the starting line in the vicinity of Knox to Yellow Bluff, Blossom Rock, mark eight (East Bay), Angel Island (to starboard), Little Harding, and back to Knox to finish. The fastest elapsed time was Martha in 1 hour, 40 minutes, 43 seconds,

Captain of the schooner Martha, Robert d’Arcy.

I had the pleasure of sailing aboard Martha. Before the race, Captain Robert d’Arcy, told me that Martha doesn’t short tack, so expect to bang the corners. What I didn’t realize was that she does short jibe, as we did trying to hang on to first place from Little Harding to the finish line at Knox, but in the last ten feet, Elizabeth Muir picked up speed and beat us by those precious three seconds. It was definitely a race I will not forget anytime soon. We look forward to having Martha back at SFYC to race the Great San Francisco Schooner Race again in 2015.

uring the recent Indian summer, SFYC hosted a double header of Audi Melges 20 championships. September 2728 had 19 boats competing in the Pacific Coast Championship and October 3-5 had 20 boats on the line for the North American Championship. The North Americans were a slightly different story as the Pacific High settled in, bringing temperatures in the 80’s and 90’s but not very much wind, forcing the start times to be delayed each day as the Race Committee awaited its arrival from a variety of directions. All eight races were completed in the three day event as planned with Sunday being more typical with winds from 225 degrees at 8-12 knots. Reigning Melges 20 Worlds champion John Kilroy’s Samba Pa Ti had the title all but locked up by the end of race 6 but all the remaining positions were changing daily in the very competitive fleet. A noteworthy event occurred in Race 7 as young Liam finished first (his first in a championship) crossing the line in front of dad John by literally seconds. he air is a little crisper, the days a little shorter, the pumpkins have been harvested and soon we will be enjoying Thanksgiving with friends and family. Autumn is a special time of year. The Auxiliary has had a very successful Fall filled with events. Our fundraiser was a smashing success, with the Ports of Call vendors offering their wares, and our own beautiful SFYC members modeling fashions from Helen Lyall at the Runway 2014 Fashion Show. This was our most successful fundraiser ever! Thank you to the cochairs, Eugenia Jesberg, Elizabeth Merrill and Stephanie Cannell, to the rest of the Fundraiser Committee, Julie Zanze, Robin Reynolds and Connie Lewis and the entire Auxiliary Board. Also, congratulations to Jennet Nazzal who was just thrilled when her winning ticket was drawn. Jennet, have fun shopping at Saks! The Dreamboat Series, as always, was a lot of fun. Thanks go to P/P Cissy Kirrane for organizing this event again this year and to Hank Easom and Glenn Isaacson for volunteering their Dreamboats, Yucca and Q, for a very special day on The Bay. Halloween was very spooky this year. Thank you to our chairs, Carol Anderson and Cynthia Bernheim, for all the fun. We hope you all enjoyed the haunted house! Now it’s time to make your reservations for the Santa Brunch on December 7. Don’t miss Chef Reny’s famous brunch or the visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus. This is always a family favorite, so make your reservations soon. But before Santa comes, we have the Auxiliary Annual Meeting and luncheon on Thursday, November 13th and our holiday decoration get-togethers on December 1 and 2. Come help us hang the holly and the mistletoe. On December 11, we will “Get Lit” at the annual boat lighting and marvel at all the lights and holiday decorations. Come join the festivities and enjoy the spirit of the season at the annual Members Holiday Gala. It will be a Nutcracker Christmas filled with many surprises! My goodness! How will we ever have time for holiday shopping?

Cruising News

S

ince our last edition of Cruising News, SFYC members participated in two cruises.

Delta Cruise The annual Delta Summer Cruise was well attended again this year, with eight boats participating. Delta Yacht Club is a friendly and delightful destination. The weather was perfect. Ralph the Separator, a great one-man band, provided live entertainment; brought back again this year by popular demand. Special thanks to Jim and P/P Mimi Cornelius and Mike and Joan Mellon for organizing and leading the cruise. Mark your calendar for July 20-24, 2015 for next year’s Delta Summer Cruise. Five Club Tinsley Cruise The annual Five Club Cruise to Tinsley Island was on October 3-5. Over 160 members of SFYC, and the Corinthian, Tiburon, Sausalito, and Marin Yacht Clubs all converged on Tinsley Island, whose motto is “In all the world there is only one”. This once-a-year invitation to outside yacht clubs provided perfect weather and an island filled with great amenities. Our friend, Ralph the Separator, provided an encore to his great performance in August and got everyone up and dancing. Many thanks to R/C Ed Lynch for leading this cruise and organizing the Saturday cocktail party, hosted by SFYC and featuring Pain Killers (You will see them in the Caribbean).

Half Moon Bay Cruise Due to scheduling conflicts and other considerations, we have postponed the blue water cruise, originally scheduled for October 17-19, to next Spring. Watch future editions of the Bulletin for next year’s Cruising Calendar.

Welcome New Members

Bill Wallace, Membership Committee flcloud@comcast.net

The SFYC welcomes Hugh Warren Beecher as a Regular Member. Hugh is based in San Francisco as Director, Wealth & Investment Management, Barclays Bank. He and his wife, Leslie, have returned to Marin after a six year absence and now live in Tiburon with their two children, Nicholas, 13 and Ella, 10. Hugh and his family have been boating for many years, particularly enjoying sailing, racing and fishing on SFYC member boats. His children are active sailors also, looking forward to participating in the Youth Sailing Program. He is proposed by R/C Ed Lynch and seconded by Jolynn Hardiman.

The SFYC welcomes Admiral James O. Ellis, Jr. as a Regular member. Jim has taken the concept of “a demonstrated interest” in boats and water activity to the extreme. If he decides to bring his former “boat” into the harbor, it will require re-dredging and widening the channel, demolishing the breakwater and moving Corinthian Island about a mile north. His boat? The 1,092’, 97,000 ton Nimitz-Class Nuclear Aircraft Carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, CVN 72. But not to worry, when he retired from the US Navy in 2004 as a 4-Star Admiral, one of the conditions was that he relinquish his personal possession of the Ship. He reluctantly agreed. Jim’s naval career resume reads like that of a primary character in a Tom Clancy novel. He graduated from Annapolis in 1969, qualified as a Naval Aviator flying carrier-based fighter jets. He became the first Commanding Officer of Strike/Fighter Squadon 131 in 1985, deploying F/A 18 Hornets aboard the USS Coral Sea. USS Abraham Lincoln His career includes flag officer positions on several major US Navy combat ships, including Executive Officer on the USS Carl Vinson and a three-year tour as Captain of the USS Abraham Lincoln, deployed during Operation Desert Storm. In 1996, Jim held the post of Commander-in-Chief US Naval Forces – Europe, based in London, in 1998, Commander-in-Chief Allied Forces, based in Naples, Italy and later, Commander, United States Strategic Command. Upon retirement from the Navy, Jim served as President/CEO of the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations and currently serves as Visiting Fellow, Hoover Institution, Stanford. He has sailed boats, large and small, all over the world, including a tour on the historic, three-masted frigate, USS Constitution, affectionately known as “Old Ironsides”, celebrating her 200th birthday re-fit. Jim and his wife, Elisabeth, live in Belvedere. Jim has spent his life on the water and looks forward to sailing on San Francisco Bay in the company of fellow sailors. And, if anyone is looking for a deckhand, please let him know! Jim is proposed by Michael Reynolds and seconded by Glenn Isaacson.

The SFYC welcomes Ryan Michael McInerney as a Regular member. Ryan is president of Visa, Inc. He and his wife, Angela, live in Tiburon with their three children, Egan, 8, Quinn, 6, and Sloan, 3. Ryan grew up in Michigan, sailing all types of dinghies including Butterflies, Lasers and M-Skows on Spring Lake, an inland lake connected to Lake Michigan. In 1999, they lived in Sydney, Australia and sailed Beneteau’s at the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia. They subsequently relocated to Annapolis where Jim sailed J/80’s and J/110’s. Their two sons are now sailing Opti’s, his older recently sailed in The SFYC Youth Sailing Light Green Sailing Program and he participates in the West Michigan Youth Sailing Association. Jim remains a member of the Spring Lake Yacht Club in Michigan. Ryan is proposed by John Partridge and seconded by Robb Wehmueller.

Fellow Capricorns Sunday, December 28, 2014 12 p.m. We’ll keep the tradition of having that birthday party we didn’t have growing up; sharing our good and bad (are there any?) traits; and of course, singing “Happy Birthday” to ourselves. New this year, several Marin County 4 H'ers are bringing their pygmy goats, from 11:15 to noon, to help us celebrate. You are welcome to attend if you ARE a Capricorn, or if you BRING a Capricorn.

Your lines for chaffing Your shackles for rust and wear Make sure your fenders are tied and placed properly Most of all check your Jib sheets and sails to make sure they are secure. This is the most dangerous oversight your SFYC harbor staff has to deal with in storms. When the Jib sheets get loose, they cause damage to boats, docks and are life threating to staff and members that try to secure them in already dangerous conditions.
