50 Years of PGA History at Silverado Photography Provided By Kaiser Permanente Heritage Resources

In 1967, Westgate had hired Harvie Ward, a two-time National Amateur golf champion, to be in charge of public relations at Silverado. With his contacts in the golfing world, Ward convinced the PGA that a tournament held at Silverado would be a natural to follow or precede the Crosby Pro-Am. Contacting Westgate at his development in Maui, Hawaii, Ward told him the PGA was willing to play a tournament at Silverado if Westgate could arrange for prize money. Westgate contacted Jack Ashby, then Chairman of Kaiser Steel, and proposed that the various Kaiser firms sponsor the tournament. Ashby agreed and lined up Kaiser Steel, Kaiser Industries, Kaiser Cement, and Kaiser Aluminum to provide $50,000 for the first tournament. Thus the Silverado Country Club hosted the Kaiser International Golf Tournament from 1968 to 1976. Two tournaments were played in 1969 as the rainy winter weather forced the PGA and Kaiser to change the tournament date to the fall.

Many of the local Napa Valley residents and businesses have come together over the years to support the PGA event at Silverado, especially former President and Vice Chairman of Kaiser Industries, Eugene Trefethen and his wife Catherine. In 1968 Gene and Katie purchased vineyards on Oak Knoll Avenue and their son John and his wife Janet released their first wines in 1973. Nearly five decades later, this Napa legend is still family owned and now includes the third generation, who remain committed to the craft of 100% estate grown wines.

“Kaiser ‘Golf’ to Benefit Boys” The Argus, Nov, 1, 1967 Clarence J. Woodard, president of the Oakland Boys’ Clubs, announces that the Boys’ Clubs would receive substantial benefit from the $125,000 Kaiser International Open Golf Tournament to be played Jan. 18-21 at Silverado Country Club in Napa. The Kaiser Open, which will offer the largest official PGA prize money for a season opener, is expected to draw most of the country’s leading professional golfers. Kaiser Companies are principal sponsor of the tournament. www.silveradoresort.com

You are Invited Trefethen Family Vineyards is one of Napa’s pioneering wineries. Founded in 1968, John and Janet Trefethen helped define what Napa is today. Five decades later, this legend is still family owned and now includes the third generation, who remain committed to the craft of 100% estate grown wines.

The Historic Winery – Tasting Flights Originally constructed in 1886, this historic landmark was recently restored. Designed by the leading California winery architect at that time, Hamden McIntyre, the building is a rare example of a wooden three-story “gravity flow” winery. The first floor has now been rededicated to the aging of wines in barrel. The second floor features a new tasting room, with a stunning view of the estate vineyards. Under the original soaring redwood ceilings, visitors savor this piece of Napa Valley’s history, as they sample Trefethen’s estate grown wines, with three different flights to choose from. They also offer an in-depth educational tour and tasting experience that touches on the history of Napa and the family’s approach to the craft of winegrowing. Reservations are required for the tour and suggested for the seated tastings, especially on weekends.

The Villa – Reserve Tasting This former Trefethen family residence is a fine example of the Arts and Crafts Movement in California. The elegant woodwork reflects the style’s embrace of craftsmanship and natural materials. Surrounded by gorgeous gardens, the Villa is now the home of Trefethen’s Reserve tasting experience. After checking in at the Historic Winery, guests are escorted to the Villa. Seated around a large table, they are led through a flight of some of our most special estate grown wines. This semi-private tasting, only available by prior reservation, is held three times each day, with a maximum of ten guests.

The Key Ingredient Missing from Your Golf or Tennis Game Photography By Eric Reed Imagine stepping up to the tee on a par five, swinging your driver, and watching your golf ball land right in the middle of the fairway more than 200 yards away. Imagine acing serve after serve, playing a strong backhand and maintaining your stamina well into your third set. The key to this level of strength, balance, endurance, and mobility isn’t a secret. It’s suspension training. The elite professional trainers at Silverado Resort offer ongoing classes in TRX suspension training with the goal of improving our guests’ golf and tennis games. Here’s how it can help.

differentiate each wine that Silverado offers, Cairns says his food and beverage staff wants to tell the story behind the winery it comes from. Starting in 2018, guests will see so many different varieties of wine at the Silverado, Cairns explains. “You might be intrigued by trying something you’ve never heard of before,” he says. Cairns adds that he wants to sprinkle the Silverado’s menus with some smaller wines that might not have wide distribution. What’s the secret that enables Cairn to do this? The Silverado’s location and members. “What gives me an advantage is winemakers and owners are Silverado members,” he points out. “We already have a direct relationship with them because they are right here. That’s a fun thing. Most people might not know who they are, but in food and beverage, they are celebrities. It’s exciting to have that culture here.”

If you answer yes to any of these questions, then we invite you to bring your wine expertise and appreciation to the Silverado Resort & Spa. Professional Golfers in the Wine Business When you visit PGA golf legend, Johnny Miller’s Silverado Resort and Spa, you may find yourself asking how many other professional golfers have become wine aficionados and taken the big step of getting directly involved in the wine business themselves. That might mean launching their own estate to produce wine, or partnering with a vineyard to launch a privatelabel vintage. Here’s a quick list of the golfers who are producing their own wine labels for your enjoyment.

The creation of Luke Donald Collection wines has its origins in a longstanding friendship between topranked pro golfer Luke Donald and fine wine professional Bill Terlato of the family-owned Terlato Wine Group.

Luke Donald

Ernie Els

David Frost

The Luke Donald Collection launched in 2008 with a Claret-style red wine blend. Donald-label wines originate in California’s Napa Valley in the vineyards of the Terlato Wine Group, which partnered with Donald to produce the label. Donald’s “personal involvement in the blending makes the wines original and unique,” the Terlato Web site states.

With his friend and partner Jean Engelbrecht, Els formed Engelbrecht Els Vineyards in South Africa in 1999, and the first vintage was produced in 2000. Five Bordeaux varietals are produced under the Els label, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

A native of South Africa who won 11 times on the PGA Tour, Frost grew up in the wine business - his father owned a vineyard. Frost bought his own, 300-acre vineyard in 1994, the David Frost Wine Estate, and produced his first vintage in 1997. His label’s offerings include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Par Excellence (a traditional red blend) and Shiraz.

Greg Norman Greg Norman Estates wines are produced from vineyards the company owns in Australia and California. Greg’s favorites include Lake County Zinfandel and Australian Reserve Shiraz. The Norman label offers a range of reds (including Cabernet Merlot and Pinot Noir); plus whites (Chardonnays) and sparkling wines. www.gregnormanestateswine.com

Gary Player Gary Player, aka the “Black Knight” due to the all-black attire he preferred during his golf career, has a wine label as part of his Black Knight Enterprises company. Not surprisingly, the label is named Black Knight Wine. Player’s wines are produced by the Quoin Rock winery in the Stellenbosch winelands of South Africa. The label launched with the Muirfield 1959 vintage, part of the “Gary Player Major Championship Series” that is planned to included 18 vintages released over a 20-year period. www.playerwine.com

Jack Nicklaus The Jack Nicklaus Wines label is produced in partnership with Terlato Wines (which also produces the Luke Donald Collection) and debuted in 2010 with two 2007 vintages - a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Private Reserve Cabernet. When Nicklaus, a long-time wine collector, sought to create a signature wine, he and his family looked for a partner who held high standards consistent with their own. www.terlatowines.com/brands/california/jack-nicklaus-wines
