Long a Napa Valley favorite, the Spa at Silverado Resort raises the bar for boutique weekend spa getaways. Like the wine-country resort at large, the Silverado Resort and Spa exudes a timeless elegance, with its plantation exterior tucked between some of Napa’s best vineyards all while playing host to one of the best golf courses in Northern California. The harmony between inside and out is echoed by the spa’s natural cuisine and therapies. • Treatments range from 50 minutes to 100 minutes and include such signature therapies such as Par For The Course that focuses on the muscle groups used for golfing. We begin by invigorating the muscles with a sports balm rub, then using specific Deep Tissue massage techniques on the arms, shoulders, back, hips and legs to enhance range of motion. Optional golf ball rolling technique is offered to provide a deeper level of pressure. • Also try Chardonnay Sugar Scrub. This all-natural sugar scrub is blended with shea butter and six natural oils to exfoliate and nourish your skin. The rich moisturizer will protect and heal even the driest of skin. • After your treatment stop by the Spa Cafe with delicious and healthy fare such as salads, sandwiches, fruit juices and smoothies for on the go experience or slowdown and enjoy an item from our lunch menu. Sip and savor an espresso or cappuccino from our coffee menu in our tranquil WIFI hotspot.

A Fun and Relaxing Experience Don’t let the term “school” frighten you away. You won’t need to do any studying or take any exams at this Napa epicenter of cooking classes (unless you want to, of course). Owner and skilled chef, Malcolm de Sieyes says he strives to take the stress out of cooking. Before opening his official “experiential cooking school” in Napa, Chef Malcolm dabbled with a few entrepreneurial ventures, including offering cooking classes at private parties. “Cooking can be such a stressful experience, so when I came to do a party, it became an event where the hosts were happy, the guests were happy, and I was engaged. It was a win-win-win.”

Learn at Your Own Pace While Sampling the Best Local Ingredients and Wines In his large and brightly lit commercial kitchen in Napa, Chef Malcolm hosts private team-building events and a variety of hands-on cooking classes for interested folks of all levels. From a “Sparkling Sunday Brunch” course on alternate weekends to a “Farm-to-Table Dinner Class,” to a Saturday morning “Knife Skills Workshop,” students will brush up on culinary basics or learn to perfect new recipes based on fresh, local ingredients. And you had better believe that a robust list of local Napa wines is available to pair with your class experience and meal, for an additional fee. He even sources many of the ingredients for his school from his very own gardens at nearby Stone Tree Farm. “A cooking class serves as a learning experience, social event, and a team-building exercise,” de Sieyes said in 2015. “In my classes, you can engage at whatever level you are comfortable.”

One and Done:

Visiting the Tank Garage Winery

Celebrating the Out of the Ordinary Right away, visitors to Tank Garage are struck by the unique ambiance. Instead of following the classic Mediterranean villa model that many Napa wineries have emulated (to great success, of course), this delightfully dated yet renovated spot is set in an old 1930s garage and filling station (hence the origin of the Tank Garage name). From motorcycles to classic trucks, the dÊcor and atmosphere are modeled on vintage California car culture. However, as soon as you taste the fun and creative character of these small-batch, one off wines, you will know for sure that you’re in a prosperous winery and not just a haven for the classic-car obsessed.

The Wines Its offerings are forever changing, but highly-rated current options include a rich 2014 red, called “Dark Science,” and “Space Cowboy,” another 2014 red wine, which is a blend that “bounds out of the glass with black currant, vanilla, and pencil shaving aromas.” One of its most popular white wines right now, called “Boy Loves Girl,” is a 2015 vintage named after the 60-year-old romance comic of the same name. This fruity selection contains “tropical aromas of white peach, melon, tarragon, and jasmine.”

Your Visit 45-minute tastings take place at Tank Garage’s unique “Lubrication Bar” and a “secret” back room. The small tasting fee will be waived after the purchase of three or more bottles. In addition to its playful wine offerings, its gift store is full of unique merchandise, such as a matteblack logo harmonica or Pacific Oak wooden sunglasses. Many of these treats (including an award-winning wine club) are available at its online store, as well.

The grand Silverado Resort has had a long love affair with the game of golf. Its original 18 holes opened to guests in 1955, before undergoing a redesign in 1966 by famed course designer, Robert Trent Jones. It was at this time that a new “south course” was also added to the property. Silverado has had the good fortune of hosting several PGA Tour events over the years, like the Kaiser International Open Invitational, from 1968 through 1976, the Anheuser-Busch Golf Classic from 1977 through 1980, Champions Tour events from 1989 through 2002, as well as The Frys.com Open in 2014 and 2015.

GOLF MEETS HOSPITALITY Last October, the resort was pleased to re-welcome a PGA Tour event back to its lovely grounds, this time as the 2016 Safeway Open. An affair to remember reoccurring this coming October 2017, the Safeway Open boasted record ticket sales, a 27,000 square foot food and wine pavilion, and five nights of high profile live music performances on the majestic mansion lawn. A particularly impressive feature of last year’s festivities was that the golf, food, wine, and music were all included under the markedly affordable $30 ticket price. Lagardère Sports and Entertainment partnered with Safeway last year to provide hospitality services for the PGA event — a partnership that Executive Vice President of Golf Events and former PGA Tour player, Jeff Sanders (1980-1986), considers a great success. Under his management, the event sold three times as many tickets as it had the year before, with hopes of attracting more guests in 2017.

THE ENTERTAINMENT MODEL What is Sanders’ secret? Even though the Safeway Open promises “the very best golf in the world,” he said in a recent interview with Private Club Marketing, “a great event needs more than just golf to help it succeed.” That’s why he promotes an “entertainment model,” based on the four pillars of golf, wine, food, and music, which he said brings four of “Napa’s great highlights together,” at the famous Silverado Resort. 40 of Napa’s incredible local wineries came together with pop-up dining services provided by some of the very best fine dining establishments Napa has to offer, including Morimoto, French Laundry, and Charlie Palmer Steakhouse, as well as Starbucks and the Safeway Super Deli. The large crowds also enjoyed performances by the likes of Third Eye Blind and Charles Kelley of Lady Antebellum, among others. Sanders has also mentioned that there are “a limited number of hospitality suites available” for the coming year’s event and that interested parties should contact him at jsanders@lagardere-se.com.

“A great event needs more than just golf to help it succeed.” 2017’s PGA Safeway Open promises more of the same from last year, only “bigger and better” amenities, not to mention repeat participation expected from last year’s winner, Brendan Steele.

The Kaiser International 1968-1976 The Anheuser-Busch Golf Classic 1977-1980 The Transamerica PGA Senior Tour 1989-2002

TOUR CHAMPIONS AT SILVERADO Safeway Open 2016 Brendan Steele Frys.com Open 2015 Emiliano Grillo 2014 Sang-Moon Bae Napa Valley Championship presented by Beringer Vineyards 2002 Tom Kite In 1967, Westgate had hired Harvie Ward, a two-time National Amateur golf champion, to be in charge of public relations at Silverado. With his contacts in the golfing world, Ward convinced the PGA that a tournament held at Silverado would be a natural to follow or precede the Crosby Pro-Am. Contacting Westgate at hisdevelopment in Maui, Hawaii, Ward told him the PGA was willing to play a tournament at Silverado if Westgate could arrange for prize money. Westgate contacted Jack Ashby, then Chairman of Kaiser Steel, and proposed that the various Kaiser firms sponsor the tournament. Ashby agreed and lined up Kaiser Steel, Kaiser Industries, Kaiser Cement, and Kaiser Aluminum to provide $50,000 for the first tournament. Thus the Silverado Country Club hosted the Kaiser International Golf Tournament from 1968 to 1976. Two tournaments were played in 1969 as the rainy winter weather forced the PGA and Kaiser to change the tournament date to the fall. Anheuser-Busch sponsored the AnheuserBusch Golf Classic from 1977 to 1980, before moving the tournament to Williamsburg, VA. In 1989, Silverado management contracted with the International Management Group of Cleveland, Ohio and the Transamerica Insurance Company of San Francisco to host the Senior PGA tournament for three years. The first tournament was held in October 1989, the same week the Loma Prieta earthquake caused major damage in the San Francisco and East Bay areas. While that catastrophe seriously affected spectator attendance, the 1990 tournament enjoyed a large turnout of golf fans from the Bay Area. The Transamerica has continued through 2001.

A Singular Experience:

B Cellars Brings Wine and Food Pairings to a New Level

33

| SILVERADO RESORT & SPA

With over 400 wineries and tasting rooms in the famous Napa Valley area, it’s hard for a winemaker to stand out and make their mark. That’s one reason why B Cellars, led by Kirk Venge, is such a special place. Following a multi-winery strategy, this premium wine destination creates memorable blends from many of Napa’s most beloved vineyards, creating such depth of flavor that it stands out every year.

NEW DIGS With the recently-built, state-of-the-art wine production facility and the grand new hospitality house on-site, B Cellars has situated itself as a preeminent and expansive wine experience. 15,000 square feet of caves and cellars adjoin an interactive demonstration kitchen with an open-flame hearth oven at its focal point. The grounds are vast and beautiful, including a functional culinary garden, which visitors are welcome to tour.

SIGNATURE EXPERIENCES Another reason B Cellars is at the forefront of the Napa tourism scene is that it has pushed past the traditional winery tour model to offer both tasting and interactive educational experiences. Guests can choose from unique wine experiences, like Sojourn, a light wine tasting from B Cellars’ flagship portfolio for about $40 per person, to the Chef ’s Garden Pairing, featuring seasonal farm-to-table food and wine pairings for about $135 per person. In this ultimate wine experience, visitors enjoy four exquisite courses pairing the bounty of the on-site culinary garden with B Cellars’ Flagship Blended and Limited Production wines. Depending on the weather, guests may be seated outdoors in the garden or the beautifully situated hospitality house.

YOUR WINE EDUCATION Visitors come to Napa to taste beautiful wines, of course, but if you’re ready to dig into the art, culture, and science that is world-class wine making, B Cellars offers a singular opportunity. Come for the delicious wines, stay to learn about seasonality, Napa Valley weather and how it affects the grapes, regional soil types, and symbiotic planting theories. With so much to experience, B Cellars may well be the highlight of your trip to the scenic Napa Valley. Downtown Dining Guide NAPA’S TOP 15 PLACES TO TRULY ENJOY WINE COUNTRY CUISINE In recent years, Napa’s downtown district has experienced a welcome revitalization, including the introduction of a flotilla of world-class eateries, from Michelin-reviewed restaurants, to simple, elegant bistros. In a sea of compelling dining choices, how will you spend your evening? We’ve compiled our carefully selected picks for an unforgettable meal in the downtown neighborhood.

39

| SILVERADO RESORT & SPA

1. LA TOQUE Ever since the world famous Michelin Guide began awarding stars to restaurants in the Napa Valley, renowned chef, Ken Frank has earned one for his “landmark” restaurant, La Toque, every year. With a seasonally rotating menu inspired by classic French cuisine, and a Wine Spectator ‘Grand Award’ for pairings, this lovely Napa spot has earned its reputation as the place to experience the best Napa has to offer in fine food and wine pairings. Be sure to reserve your spot for dinner in advance.

2. CARPE DIEM WINE BAR At Carpe Diem you can sit down to a range of local wines that are lovingly paired with a casual, yet sophisticated bistro menu. With accolades like Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence, and a review in the 2014 Bay Area Michelin Guide, you can feel assured of a fresh and delicious meal, served with a beautiful selection of wines. Editor’s tip: spend a flat fee (between $50 and $100) to have the wine director choose a special flight of wines for your meal.

3. TARLA MEDITERRANEAN BAR AND GRILL Let fresh, locally sourced food with Greek and Turkish influences be your order of the day. The name Tarla, meaning “field” in Turkish, reflects the farm-to-table philosophy, from restaurateurs Yusuf and Breanna Salvatore Topal. This casual-chic spot located in the Avia Hotel is a great place to spread out and relax, as the atmosphere is simple, warm, and inviting. Try one of the delightful bottles on their wine list, or bring your own for a small corkage fee.

4. NAPKINS BAR AND GRILL Styling itself as “a modern American bistro in the heart of downtown Napa,” Napkins is as much a happening nightlife spot on busy Second Street as it is a dining destination. Late night elevated bar and grill bites pair well with featured DJs and dancing every Friday and Saturday night. Call in advance for VIP bottle service and a dedicated cocktail waitress. Trust us, it’s worth it.

5. C CASA This delightful Mexican spot offers some very atypical toppings on its list of different types of tacos, served on yummy house-made corn tortillas. With proteins like duck, or fresh crab, offered up as potential fillings, you won’t find your typical taco truck fare here.

6. OENOTRI If it’s surprising artisanal pizza combinations and tasty southern Italian fare you’re after, you’ll find it at downtown Napa’s own Oenotri. Inside a hip, industrial-chic location on First Street, sample a menu made from fresh, local, “seed-to-table” ingredients, sourced from the Napa Chefs Co-Op Garden—in fact, Oenotri is one of the founding members.

7. GRACE’S TABLE This

self-proclaimed

“cheerful

Napa

bistro” might be described as “quaint” if it weren’t for the gravity of being recognized as a “Michelin Bib Gourmand” restaurant. Offering breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner (and of wine of course!), you can visit morning to night, seven days a week.

8. CELADON Even though Celadon has plenty of space for large groups (when arranged in advance) you’d still be smart to grab a reservation for this popular spot. Complete with whitewashed brick walls and an inviting open fireplace, you will definitely find classic Napa ambiance at this downtown spot. With a dinner menu ranging from braised short ribs to ratatouille, you’ll be sure to find “your dish.”

10. MORIMOTO Morimoto, on the west bank of the Napa River, comes to us from the legendary star of Iron Chef and Iron Chef America, Chef Masaharu Morimoto. Reservations are recommended, as is the famous multi-course tasting menu. The food is best described by Morimoto as a bridging of the Japanese and American palettes.

11. ANGÈLE RESTAURANT Riverfront patio dining in the heart of downtown Napa is already enough of a reason to recommend this lovely French country restaurant. Add in delicious cocktails from the classic French brasserie, a selection of local Napa wines, and what proprietors call “refined bistro fare” inspired by French countryside traditions, and you’ll never want to leave.

13. COLE’S CHOP HOUSE If you’re in the mood for a classic American meat and potatoes meal, you can fulfill your craving for the perfect steak at this “rustic” American steakhouse. Recommended by Food Network as one of their top picks for “Where to Eat Great Steak from Coast to Coast,” this Napa favorite is the perfect place to pair some of that famous cabernet sauvignon with a nice rare cut of grade-A meat.

14. CA’MOMI OSTERIA Ca’ Momi Osteria’s restaurateurs love to pay homage to their Italian roots by keeping their Italian cuisine “obsessively authentic,” in their own words. In Italian, “osteria” means a place to meet for good wine and food. At Ca’ Momi Osteria, guests get just that, combined with atmosphere, a downtown Napa location, occasional live music, and the restaurant’s beautiful setting in a historic 19th century building.

15. AZZURRO’S PIZZERIA E ENOTECA Azzurro’s has proven to be one of Napa’s most beloved spots for authentic, thin-crust pizza. Azzurro Pizzeria & Enoteca also excels with its amazing pasta specialties, seasonal antipasti selections like bruschetta and artisanal salumi, creative, fresh and seasonable salads and other simple but great food - with a thoughtful, West Coast based wine list to match, including most offerings available by the glass. In addition, daily specials and intriguing wine and beers are always featured on the specials board. At the end of a meal, customers can enjoy rotating specialties like buttermilk panna cotta with local honey, chocolate polenta cake, and always available is Straus Family organic soft serve ice cream, with homemade chocolate or caramel sauce.
